The Global Climate Canopy
An institution tying together the water, landscape and history of Governors Island and New York City, the Global Climate Observatory will be a sustainability-oriented organization. It will act as an anchor for sustainable, resilient and water-oriented development on the island, putting maritime education, cutting-edge research, and global conversations on display to the people.
The program will cater to the intersection of climate concerns and research amongst professionals and students with the public. The public spaces intertwining through the research and recreational areas will become a platform to spark interests, generate conversations and spread awareness. The project’s public space extending into the water will become an anchor of community and work gatherings for the people who already use the island on a daily basis and the new visitors it attracts from the world.
