edesign52 Anutone’s weekly newsletter, every Tuesday since April 2009, has been so popular that after one year of 52 editions it is now published as a book. Presenting Volume 1 - April 2009 to March 2010.
Volume 1 • April 2009 - March 2010
Dear Patron,
The e-design newsletter and a journey called Anutone In this journey called Anutone, we may come a long way but have only just started. In the 1990s, we pioneered the resurrection of the woodwool board industry that was being buried by its very practitioners. We did this by manufacturing world-class boards with a host of variants to meet customer needs. Its continued use in modern multiplexes in metro cities by top operators is testimony. In this decade, we have been pioneering an acoustics revolution benefiting the entire ecosystem. We are doing this by injecting scientific temper to the practice of architectural acoustics right from design, supply, install to site testing. Growing awareness of the subject and acousticians on board project teams is testimony. For the coming decade, 2010s, we are pioneering the walls and ceiling industry. It already exists. So how does one pioneer? Products, systems and services related to walls and ceilings are still in their nascent stage with current international trends at least a decade away. This is what needs to be bridged, albeit the Asian way, the ‘glocal’ approach that Anutone is pioneering. Since 2007, Anutone has been introducing a slew of products with view to realising our aim to transform the wall and ceiling industry in the coming decade. There is something exciting happening at Anutone on a daily basis and it became necessary to share new knowledge with the ecosystem on the many changes, innovations and trend-setting concepts that bring a constantly evolving portfolio of products, systems and services to the market and the industry.

Hence the idea of e-design - a weekly newsletter from Anutone, every Tuesday since April 2009, that provides one interesting fact, facet or feature about Anutone walls and ceilings. Anutone’s e-design has evoked an overwhelming response such that we are encouraged to publish a collection of one year of 52 editions for the benefit of architects, consultants, contractors and customers. While we are very bullish on our recent walls and ceilings foray we have not forgotten our roots. e-board is our fortnightly newsletter every alternate Friday that highlights our original business woodwool boards. And for acoustics and noise we will commence ecoustic and e-noise every fortnight on alternate Fridays that highlights our products for this purpose. Thank you for your attention and patronage. We look forward to enjoying the same for the coming decade. We say, ‘Challenge Yourself’, since exciting times are ahead that will surely ‘make you feel good’! Yours truly,
Team Anutone Bengaluru Monday 5 April 2010

Anutone Synthfab Greenest Greenest panel panel on on planet planet Earth! Earth!
Anutone presents yet another fabulous choice in fabric walls with modular panels for better, quieter interiors. Synthfab panels boast a core of SynthHD, Anutone’s popular brand of polyester-based infill, and a smart wrap of SpunFR, an inherently flame-retardant fabric. The panel core is the most important feature. SynthHD is thermally-bonded (no resins), chemically-free polyester fibres fused under pressure to form a highdensity wadding that is rigid with sharp lines. More, it is EHS-compliant as it is VOC-free and does not itch, irritate or lower the IAQ. Anutone Synthfab is available in standard sizes of 600 /1200 x 600 / 1200 and a thickness of 25mm for adhesive install or 30mm for Z-clip install. To know more ask for the SynthFab Brochure 1.0 or visit www.anutone.com/fabrics.htm

AnutoneSynth insulation The iealthy, durable alternative
Polyfibre as infill in quilts, outdoor clothing etc. is proven in the toughest of conditions like polar ice caps for decades – keeping cold out and warmth in. Anutone Interiors brings the same goodness of polyfibre to buildings with not just thermal but also acoustic comfort. AnutoneSynth is thermally-bonded, chemically-free polyfibre blankets used for thermacoustic linings in ceilings, panellings, partitions and floor cavities. The product is white in colour and pleasant to look, touch and feel. It does not itch or irritate, making it very safe and healthy to use. AnutoneSynth is dimensionally stable ensuring consistent thermacoustic values for the lifecyle of the building. It is made from recycled polyfibres and is recyclable again. That it also conserves energy in buildings lowering airconditioning and heating costs, it is very, very green!
HIGHLIGHTS •
Rolls of 600mm width - easy handling
•
Non-toxic, non-allergic, non-irritant, odourless
•
No protective measures required for installation
•
Dimensionally stable ensuring thermacoustic values for lifecycle of building
•
Readily available - large quantities in short time
AnutoneSynth replaces traditional insulation that tends to itch and irritate. Traditional insulation is resinbonded and emits odour. It ‘lumps down’ over time losing its insulation value. Thus, the initial higher investment in AnutoneSynth fetches matching returns over time! Use of eco-friendly materials is the mantra for sustainable development. AnutoneSynth does for insulation what CFC-free gasses have done for refrigeration. No impact on environment, healthy and sustainable.

Go Green with Anutone! 3Rs REUSE REDUCE RECYCLE A Green Revolution, of a different kind, beckons you, from Anutone. It is exciting as also easy - given the 3Rs approach Anutone takes to your interior finish solutions.
REDUCE
REUSE
RECYCLE
Anutone is selflessly committed to the green building movement even if it means reduced business from projects! In a bid to reduce the use of products and yet improve the ambience, Anutone has developed concepts like Carnival Floats and Celebration Clouds for ceilings. For walls, there are AnutoneSoft and AnutoneSynthfab that can be hung at strategic locations. All these obviate the need for continuous ceilings and wall coverings.
Anutone wall and ceiling solutions are from dry construction products and very modular - meaning they can be easily assembled, dismantled and reused. Again this could be termed as a selfgoal since Anutone could very well lose repeat business! But it does not matter in the larger interest of a greener world!
Most of Anutone products can be recycled. Products like AnutoneSmooth are recycled at Anutone’s Bangalore plant to be made into AnutoneSeptum (see flowchart below). Similarly AnutoneSnazz can be recycled as a filler material in plasterboards; AnutoneSynth can go back to the polyfibre industry etc.
In product design, Anutone has innovated with AutoAir in AnutoneSoak panels that reduce use of raw material per panel, yet achieve better performance.
Many of Anutone products are made from reused products. AnutoneSeptum is made from pre-used wood-cement particles (see flowchart on right); AnutoneSoft is made from pre-used glass bottles; AnutoneSynthfab from preused polyester-based products etc.
Flowchart for reuse of AnutoneSmooth to AnutoneSeptum
Optimise the use of interior surfacing materials by opting for Anutone, and bolster the green building movement. Yes, a Green Revolution beckons you. edesign52

Gain the competitive edge with
Subtex Ceilings
Subtex, introduced by Anutone a year ago, has been a huge success story. A smooth-surfaced, lightweight tile, with none of the usual pinhole or worm-like patterns, ensures soothing aesthetics and high light reflectance. Added advantages like sound absorption and humidity resistance enhance product appeal. Here is how AnutoneSubtex, for modular white ceilings, benefits the ecosystem.
Consultants / Architects AnutoneSubtex offers the designer a plethora of options – surface renders, large-format 1200x1200mm, concealed edge etc. Morever, Anutone offers complete system solutions with AnutoneSkelet framework – Infinity or Screenline perimeter trims for Carnival Floats, transitions and bulkheads, HVAC pockets at glazing mullions etc.
Contractors / Project Managers All components of the system are pre-finished and labcertified which means failsafe install, near-zero snag list and quick project turnaround. Once the framework is installed, AnutoneSubtex can be placed in grid even after carpeting and furniture is in place, allowing flexible sequencing, a boon to sites on tight timelines.
Clients / End-users The serenity of unbroken white surfaces, the crispness of neat joint lines, the sublimity of diffused lighting, the cocooning comfort of quietitude - all this and more ensures less strain and stress, a feel-good factor that translates to higher output, thus providing the business with a competitive edge!

Anutone for Telepresence
Telepresence is a hot topic today given its benefits of life-like conferencing obviating the need for travel; the resultant savings being costs and carbon emissions. Anutone detected its potential ahead of time and published a leader in Acoustic Answers Nov-Dec 2006. Anutone, today, offers complete wall and ceiling solutions for Telepresence Rooms ensuring single-source turnkey responsibility.
A conference table arrangement that can be used both as an independent physical space for normal meetings or linked virtually via telepresence with large screens in the cabinetry to conduct business with several remote locations simultaneously in real time
Telepresence Rooms are finished in a double-wall-and-ceiling configuration. The outer wall or Iso Wall is clad with AnutoneSeptum on AnutoneStudd framework with an infill of AnutoneSynth. The inner wall or Abs Wall is clad with AnutonePixel, finished with AnutoneSmery. The unique feature is precise colouration to the requirements of life-like visual requirements without impacting human skin tones. The primary ceiling is AnutoneSeptum whereas the secondary ceiling is AnutoneSubtex that provides excellent light reflectance and the practicality of plenum access for services like HVAC, luminaries etc. The unique feature is the diffused, shadow-less uplighting so crucial for life-like image transmission.
A typical conferencing furniture in a telepresence environment. 6 chairs physically placed around the table on one side with another 6 chairs ‘virtually’ placed on the other side to make it a 12seater.
All the components that make up the wall and ceiling system are from Anutone; lab-certified, factory-finished that ensure hassle-free, zero-snag install. No multiple vendor sourcing, no incompatiblity issues etc. All this and more ensures glitch-free microphone and camera alignment resulting in superlative performances of the Telepresence Room for remote audiences. Beyond Telepresence, Anutone has successfully deployed this technology in AV conference rooms, Network Operating Centres (NOC) and other such spaces.

Seamless ceilings with
Designpanel
Optimum method for large ceilings means large-format Designpanel with tapered edges for seamless finish Designpanel offers scope for a ceiling design with large, continuous surfaces. With a surface area equivalent to 8 conventional tiles of 2x2, each Designpanel board ensures lesser joint preparation and faster installation, resulting in seamless finishes. Designpanel are installed with tapered edges along the long edges on Strut suspension system and give an even and smooth intermediate joint filling between panels. There are 2 perf styles: Designpanel Pixel - the microperf is 3x3mm tiny squares at 8mm pitch that makes them almost ‘invisible’. Designpanel Sircles - for those who do not want square perf. Sircles are circular perf 6mm dia at 15mm pitch. Green
- meets best emission classification and indoor climate regulations

Real Metric
Ceilings - now here!
Architects have been wistful of all things being metric in buildings so as to keep things simple, very simple. They conceptualize buildings on 1x1m gridlines and are successful in getting it built that way including external glazing and cladding, internal partitions etc. But when it comes to ceilings they come a cropper. Ceilings earlier came in 2’x2’ size which when the world turned metric was 610x610mm. Manufacturers finetuned this to 600x600mm or in multiples like 1200x1200mm but this never matched the 1000x1000mm gridlines of everything else in the building. Architects can now rejoice! Anutone introduces true metric ceilings from the Serge series: Widths (mm)
-
Lengths (mm) -
500, 1000 1000, 2000, 3000
Ceiling gridlines can match building gridlines for perfect harmony. What you conceptualise is what you get! What’s more, here is the icing on the cake! Anutone can supply wall panels too in true metric from its Soft or Stretch series: Widths (mm)
-
Lengths (mm) -
1000, 1500 1000, 2000, 3000

Anutone @ GBC Gold Supporter of the Green Building Congress held 10-12 September 2009 in Hyderabad
The 7th edition of the Green Building Congress 2009 gave a call for transforming India into a nation where 'Green' becomes a way of life. The IGBC Vision (India after 75 years of Independence) is to have 100,000 green buildings with a footprint of 5 billion ft2 by 2023. Dr Prem C. Jain, Chairman said, "13 years from now when independent India turns 75, we want it to become a trendsetter to the rest of the world in green buildings. And I am sure we can achieve this goal.” The larger vision of IGBC is to deliver green buildings at a cost lower than that of conventional buildings. Anutone is right there in the middle with its Gold Support to the show. Anutone is not only a member of IGBC but also ISO 14001 2004 certified. The tradeshow had over 100 stalls exhibiting green products and services. The Anutone stall showcased white ceiling solutions that are green - Subtex Nubby (texture), Serge Lay-in (metal) and Belgravia Pixel (plaster) in different grid and perimeter. As a contrast, Anutone also showcased Slats Haya (wood) for walls. The Anutone stall received an enthusiastic response from visitors.

Subtex R and Subtex S for
tough or value installs
Subtex, introduced by Anutone a year ago, has been a huge success. A smooth-surfaced, lightweight tile, with none of the usual pinhole or worm-like patterns, ensures soothing aesthetics and high light reflectance. Anutone is back with two variations in Subtex to suit different types of applications: Subtex R for rugged and tough installs and Subtex S, Slim tiles for budget projects. Subtex R AnutoneSubtex R is a rugged, robust ceiling tile which combines a smooth white surface with very good properties in the areas of acoustics, fire safety and humidity resistance. This is just what you want for a very durable ceiling construction. The different edge details in AnutoneSubtex R provide opportunities for semi-concealed ceilings as well as standard visible grid.

Acoustic Gypsum Ceilings Plaza for grid & Designpanel 900 for span
Acoustic gypsum has virtually invisible microperf and is introduced to the India market by Anutone with Danogips of Denmark. It can no longer be perceived as an expensive ceiling solution - grid or span - as Anutone has introduced two value products that ensure considerable cost savings with no reduction in functional performance!
Plaza Pixel is an economical alternative to Belgravia Pixel for 2x2 grid ceilings

Plaza Pixel ceiling is best highlighted by using a narrow grid system like Skelet O15 or T15. Plaza Pixel is fast and easy to mount as all edges remain concealed above the grid. Plaza Pixel is also used as a margin panel for Belgravia Pixel. Plaza Pixel being 40% less expensive than Belgravia Pixel is a boon for value projects.

Designpanel Pixel results in full-span, seamless ceilings. Since the 1200 model is bulky to handle and perceived as expensive, Anutone introduces the 900 model in a very easy 900x2700mm size that is popular across the world and is 20% less expensive.
Readily available! Both Plaza Pixel and Designpanel 900 Pixel are readily available with Anutone for offices, hotels, hospitals, malls.

Architectural spaces are there to be designed. The ideas belong to the designer. Anutone can enable designers capture ideas and turn them from concept to reality. projected transitions and design accents with modular tiles suspended on grid or a seamless finish with
• Very high aesthetic value and visual appeal
gypsum is easy and simple thanks to the innovation of Carnival Floats. Functionally it can be superior too as
• Superior acoustical performance – both absorb sound surfaces
Carnival Floats provide greater sound absorption than a continuous ceiling of the same surface area
• Flexibility in layout and sizing of ceiling floats
because the soundwaves are absorbed from both surfaces of the float – the exposed bottom surface
• Multi level – imparts the illusion of overhead movement • Integration of multi products & large format panels
and the non-exposed top surface.
And now here comes the icing on the cake! Because of the Primary Carrier as a special feature, Carnival Floats can be assembled on the floor and then hoisted up thus making it very easy and very quick for the contractor to install ceiling islands at project sites!

Ceiling solutions that are timeless Natural finish with woodwool boards – now improved!
The unique random twirls of fibre construction and texturised surface finish sets woodwool boards apart in choice of ceilings for architectural spaces. A natural ‘breathing’ panel with the timeless appeal of fine fibres sharply contrasts the current fad of smooth surfaces of glazing, drywalls and stone floors. Know the history of woodwool boards on page 2 of Strand TDS. Yes, at Anutone, we still make woodwool boards! After all, it started our journey in 1966! In the last three years Anutone has unleashed a vast array of wall and ceiling products; so you could be excused in forgetting woodwool boards! We not only remember but have continuously improved the woodwool board to meet the challenges of changing building interiors and functional requirements! Know the Fabulous Features of Anutone’s Strand on page 3 of Strand TDS. The 2010 collection is reorganized into four distinct product lines based on new fibre dimensions and matrix technologies. Refer the table.

Further, due to the wide array of other wall and ceiling products now available from Anutone, the previous brand, ‘Smooth’, for plain woodwool board is a misnomer to a newbie as Anutone expands into new markets around the world. ‘Smooth’ would be more appropriate to Serge Aquila or Belgravia Regula or even Sonator Pearl (all unperf panels from Anutone)! So ‘Smooth’ is now ‘Strand’. Anutone’s new range of Strand woodwool boards from 2010: Brand

Fabric-wrapped wall panels in
SIZE ZER
Soak Series now just 10mm thick. Wow!
Size Zero is the current fad so can Anutone’s design+development team be far behind? Everybody wants it slim, superslim! After Size Zero laptops, smartphones, televisions and ramp models, comes the ultra-slim, ultrachic Soak series of fabric-wrapped wall panels. Soak Cordura, Cord & Plane earlier had a limitation of minimum thickness, 20mm. This was due to kerfed long edges to receive H-Spline. This also resulted in a site problem of panels being able to be dismantled from one corner only. Now to meet the demand from designers for space-saving slimmer panels, Anutone has innovated to result in 10mm thick panels that can be hung on walls and more importantly dismantled from any point. Also all edges are fully finished - so panels can be installed discretely as floating islands!

Denoted thickness are of base panel only. Please add fabric thickness and Z-clip/bar thickness to panel thickness to arrive at installed depth of system from base wall. For example, Soak Cord 10mm would mean minimum 18mm installed depth of system. Soak Cord on CC10 with/without Synth would mean 28mm installed depth. For true 10mm system thickness only go for Slim PNS or Slim Compo from Anutone! edesign52

Anutone’s
New Avatar!
2010-2019 The Decade of Hope
It is the year of avatars! It’s Anutone Walls & Ceilings now
It’s e-design now
The new year 2010 and the new decade 2010-2019 has started with many promises, building on the fulfilling experiences of 2009 and the last decade. It’s been an enduring journey at Anutone which has been iconising ‘interior’ experiences for discerning space users with a new genre of walls and ceilings - products, systems and services.
The weekly ‘edutaining’ e-news from Anutone has generated overwhelming response across the business value chain. It is time for us to brand the Anutone enewsletters and what better name than ‘e-design’! Our Tuesday e-news has become an online encyclopaedia of space design nuances for the built environment especially walls and ceilings for commercial interiors. Valuing the experience and the excitement it has generated, Anutone’s e-newsletters will, henceforth, be called e-design.
The widespread excitement brought in with this new genre of feel-good experiences has reckoned Anutone’s Interiors division as primarily a walls and ceilings enterprise. Keeping in line with this excitement, Anutone Interiors is, henceforth, called Anutone Walls & Ceilings (a division of Anutone Acoustics Limited). A trusted commitment to serve its patrons with its new forte: walls and ceilings! Get ready for the new year and the new decade for a whole set of new experiences from Anutone!
Anutone thus lives up to the expectations of its patron community for designing world-class architectural experiences. Hence e-design. Every Tuesday, as before, but with greater focus on design and build of walls and ceilings for commercial interiors.

Sastau, Tikau, Bikau – the Marwari maxim Low-cost, long-life, saleable – the Anutone maxim
The popular Marwari maxim and that of successful business communities across the world has been the same. It is time tested and proven. Anutone believes in this, and endows its products with similar attributes.
Consider Subtex Ceilings. For the best performance in white grid ceilings these soft-fibre products are low-cost with a long life cycle, and can be easily re-used.
Or consider Serge Ceilings. Being metal based, they offer considerable resale value, and are durable for rugged environments with costs linked to the London Metal Exchange!
Or even Belgravia Ceilings. Made from very high-quality gypsum, this European product brings enduring values of low lifecycle cost and long installed life. More, it is relocatable or recyclable.
And what about Strand Ceilings? 25 years and counting at many installs! This natural, low-cost product lasts generations, and can be easily relocated. Anutone has a robust recycling plan.

Microperfs & megapanels – yeh kya hai? When MP3 is not music and 1 is more than 12!
Microperfs
Megapanels
Microperfs is the new art of minutely perforating solids like metals, woods and plasters. And at 3mm, it is as closest as you get to perforating 12mm thick fibreboards and plasterboards.
Megapanels from Anutone are giant-size panels, and at 1.2x3.6m (4’x12’) they are as large as it gets.
MP3 is the new acronym for Micro Perforated 3mm on Salon Spots wood ceilings. With a rich wood grain finish and microperfs that render them almost invisible from a distance, such ceilings arouse visual excitement with no ugly holes marring the show. Welcome to the new aesthetic! Check out our other microperfs. Pixel 3x3mm square perfs in Designpanel, Belgravia and Plaza for gypsumbased ceilings and Auriga 0.7mm perfs for Serge metal ceilngs rendering them almost solid. Add to the new aesthetic!

Available in ACT GLD, ACT KLH and Subtle Texture series with Skelet Z-bar mounting. Size does matter – 1 is more than 12 - the new arithmetic!!

Pixel solutions for gypsum ceilings Microperf gypsum for grid tiles or seamless finishes
Only from Anutone can you expect micro perforated gypsum, the perfect solution for walls and ceilings that look avant-garde, sound silent and yet are economical – truly value for money, forever! Pixel is 3x3mm squares - micro perforation in glassfibre reinforced gypsum (GRG). At 8mm pitch, Pixel renders a radically artistic look to gypsum walls and ceilings that larger perfs can never provide. Pixel is available as Designpanel which is a 900x2700mm board with long edges tapered rendering a smooth, seamless finish to fullspan walls and ceilings. What is more, Designpanel can be gently curved for barrel-vaults or dome ceilings.
An important value add is that Pixel renders Designpanel as a perfect base for Smery coverings. Pixel Smery is an unperf ceiling with invisible acoustics and can be painted to choice colour – a boon for banquet halls in hotels, lobby and atrium in luxury towers and speciality spaces in offices like telepresence rooms (TP) and network operating centres (NOC).
For grid ceilings that provide access to the plenum, Pixel is available as Belgravia tiles with Steppe edge for all suspension styles – Omni O15, Uno U15, Trelis T15. For more economy Plaza is now an option. At 9.5mm thickness and Square edge for Omni O15 or Trelis T15, Plaza is the lowest-cost option in Pixel. There are many more design options in Pixel available on request. For example, widespan corridor ceilings with Tectopanel etc.

Save life, prevent fire, use Anutone All products are fire-rated to perform in an emergency
People killed while trying to escape from fire in a multilevel building. People hospitalised due to smoke ingestion while escaping from a multiplex on fire. These have been recent headlines, unfortunate and unnecessary. Unnecessary because if walls and ceilings systems carried the proper fire-rating it would have retarded flame
REACTION TO FIRE Flaming - ISO 1182 Ignitability - BS 476 Part 5 Fire propagation - BS 476 Part 6 Surface spread - BS 476 Part 7 Smoke density - ASTM E662
spread and provided enough time for people to escape or arrive to help. Of course, there are other factors too like furnishings and flooring. But walls and ceilings play a major roll as electrical wiring is concealed behind these, and short circuiting is almost always the cause for fire in buildings. Most project teams look at fire rating of the product only while what is needed
is a holistic approach and a check on the fire rating of the system. Often the product is fire-rated but to cut costs, the supporting suspension is local or not fire-rated ,and as a result the ceiling installed does not perform in case of fire. It is another matter that the product though specified as FR is substituted in the last moment in favour of non-FR due to various considerations.
A case in point is one of our most popular products, Slats. The FR grade can be more expensive by 25% and so it may be specified but in the last minute at the project execution stage non-FR is favoured. The risk is not to the project team but the space users! Hence it is necessary to sensitise the ecosystem to adopt safe fire and life safety practices in the selection and installation of wall and ceiling systems. Not just the product but the system!

Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy – what else? A plenum so cluttered, it requires a genius of a ceiling!
Advances in user technologies means building plenums are getting increasingly cluttered and hence a ceiling is becoming a very important technical interface in user spaces. What clutters the plenum? AC ducting, mechanical ventilation, pneumatic piping, power supplies, fire safety plumbing, IT cabling etc. What does a ceiling interface? AC grilles and diffusers, luminaries, fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, microphones and loudspeakers, wireless antennae, CCTV cameras etc. Plus columns, walls and partitions.
58
edesign52
And what may be suspended from the ceiling? Signages, uplighters, display screens, relocatable partition systems etc. Any one of the above services can be demanding on a ceiling but the presence of so many makes it all the more complex and challenging. Hence ceiling design requires extensive and close co-ordination from the design stage. And Anutone can be your knowledge partner in this regard.
Hospital Ceilings Hospital ceilings are perfect examples of plenum clutter. Consider the above services vying for space in the plenum and you know why Anutone ceilings are necessary. Anutone presents Sleuth – ceiling solutions for hospitals. Catch the special issue on hospital ceiling solutions in next edition of e-design.
