The Anvil The Russian State Ballet and Opera House presents
A timeless ballet with exquisite dancing and live orchestra
After the sell-out performance of The Nutcracker last year, the Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back for another spellbinding, lavish, full-production ballet. 135 years ago, audiences heard Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky for the very first time. From that moment on, the world of ballet would never be the same. Swan Lake is the compelling tale of a tragic romance in which Princess Odette is turned into a swan by an evil curse. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. Witnessing one turn into a beautiful young woman he is instantly captivated. Will his love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under? Swan Lake captures, like no other ballet, the full range of human emotions – from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy. You’ll take away memories to cherish long after the final curtain falls. £36, £34 Over 65s, under 16s and f/t students £2 off (includes £3 booking fee)

The jaunty overture to Bernstein’s hit show which follows three sailors in New York makes a rousing opening to this concert in his centenary year. Beethoven’s last piano concerto is his most brilliant and powerful. The confident outer movements are balanced by an inward-looking slow movement, which moves into the finale with a simple but magical transition. Sibelius’ fifth and most well-known symphony grows from the seed of its tiny opening figure. New London Sinfonia David Gibson The Peacemakers, composed in 2011, is a work extolling peace. Karl Jenkins dedicates this work to those who lost their lives during armed conflict. In the year when we are marking the centenary of the end of The Great War it acknowledges all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Stravinsky Suite: Pulcinella Walton Cello Concerto Shostakovich Symphony no. 1 Johannes Moser cello Kirill Karabits Stravinsky’s ballet was written for the Ballets Russes, and its wit and grace both delighted Diaghilev and brought a new element into the composer’s music. Walton’s late Cello Concerto, which the composer regarded as the best of his concertos, is full of bewitching music. After the lyrical first movement comes a brilliant scherzo. The final movement is a set of variations which melt into a peaceful and magical conclusion. Shostakovich’s dazzling First Symphony was his graduation piece from the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. It reflects the optimism and experimentation of the early 1920s.
