THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS by Adam Bampton-Smith On the night before Christmas, Emily stares out of the window, hugs her teddy and waits excitedly for the morning, while in the corner a little mouse called Eddie can’t understand why only humans are allowed to get presents. So he sets off in search of Father Christmas to find out for himself. Along the way he dodges the family cat, gets directions from a cowardly robot and is given some unexpected advice from the magical fairy on top of the tree. Will Eddie get an answer? Will Emily get her wish? And what is that funny-shaped present sitting under the tree? The Night Before Christmas returns due to popular demand.

The Haymarket Blackeyed Theatre in association with South Hill Park presents

by Robert Louis Stevenson, adapted for the stage by Nick Lane After its sell-out run at The Haymarket in 2017, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde returns by popular demand. Doctor Henry Jekyll is a good man. Successful within his field and respected by his peers, he’s close to a discovery that will change the face of medical science forever. However, when a close friend threatens to expose and destroy his work, Jekyll is forced to experiment on himself, whereupon something goes very wrong… or very right. And suddenly Jekyll has a new friend, the brutal Edward Hyde. This thrilling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s dark psychological fantasy immerses you in the myth and mystery of 19th century London’s fog-bound streets where love, betrayal and murder lurk at every chilling twist and turn. Gripping, stylish and thought-provoking, this is unmissable theatre. Go on... treat your dark side! £22, 2pm performance £19 Over 65s £2 off, under 16s and f/t students £13 (includes £2 booking fee)

THE RUSSIAN STATE BALLET & ORCHESTRA OF SIBERIA

New for 2018

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia has quickly established itself as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies earning an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality. The soloists and corps de ballet are superb, and never fail to delight with their breath-taking physical ability and dazzling costumes. Thu 1 Feb, 7.30pm

Sat 3 Feb, 2.30pm & 7.30pm

Based on a traditional folk tale, set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia, this seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace.

The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. The dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges.

THE NUTCRACKER

This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy tale world where nothing is quite as it seems. Toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse King and his army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins...

Due to huge popular demand, after his first tour-de-force, smash hit, one man show, My Life Story, Suggs is treading the boards again. Humperdinck Hansel and Gretel Overture Reinecke Ballade for Flute and Orchestra Dvorak Slavonic Dances (selection) Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony) Sandra Ball flute Graham Bint organ Stephen Scotchmer conductor Humperdinck's delightful Hansel and Gretel Overture from his fairy-tale opera is based on a number of folk-inspired themes including the charming Evening Hymn. Although not so wellknown today, Reinecke was a very influential musical figure in his day. Inspired by Brahms' Hungarian Dances, Dvorak's Slavonic Dances have become staples of the orchestral repertoire. Hampshire-based organist Graham Bint performs Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony, one of the 19th century's most significant and technically sophisticated orchestral works, containing a remarkable concatenation of tunes, colours and thematic invention that have made it so popular since its première in 1886. £24, £20, £13 Over 65s £2 off, f/t students £12, £10, £7.50, under 16s £2 (includes £2 booking fee) Early bird offer: save £2 off per ticket if booked by 13 Jan – call the box office to book.

ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

Mozart Symphony no. 38 (Prague) La clemenza di Tito: Non più di fiori Parto, parto Haydn Scena di Berenice Symphony no. 103 (Drumroll)

The Haymarket Rumpus Theatre Company presents

CAUGHT IN THE NET by Ray Cooney John Smith is an ordinary taxi driver – ordinary, that is, except for the fact he has two wives, two homes and a very tight schedule!

Christine Rice mezzo-soprano Ádám Fischer

In this glorious comic romp of a sequel to Run For Your Wife, John and long-suffering lodger Stanley Gardner are desperate to keep half-brother Gavin and halfsister Vicki apart after they’ve met on the internet.

Mozart enjoyed some of his greatest successes in Prague, and the first half of this concert showcases some of the music first performed there.

Rumpus uses all its “immaculate comic timing” (Derbyshire Times) to bring this brilliant farce to its hysterical climax.

The equivalent city for Haydn was London. His dramatic scena is his most important work for solo voice, a striking piece that shows the title character lamenting her lost lover. The symphony is one of his very best, composed in London during his second visit to this country. The finale is a masterpiece of musical tension all based on an initial horn call.

Prokofiev, like Mosolov, was a pupil of Glière. His best-known piano concerto is a highly effective blend of dynamic pianism and swooning melodies. Glière was already an established composer at the time of the 1917 revolution, with deep roots in the Russian Romantic tradition. His outstanding use of orchestral colour and expressive melody are shown to great effect in music to one of the first Soviet ballets The Red Poppy, and in the late concerto imaginatively scored for wordless soprano voice. Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem Basingstoke Choral Society Croydon Philharmonic Choir New London Sinfonia David Gibson Brahms composed numerous works, but his German Requiem is the only large scale choral work he wrote. The text does not follow the normal liturgy of a traditional mass but is derived from the Lutheran Bible, hence its name of a ‘German Requiem’. Rather than the solemn words of a religious service it is written more as a work of consolation to comfort and soothe the bereaved.
