THE GOLDEN DRAGON by Peter Eötvös

★★★★ The Times ★★★★ The Guardian ★★★★ Artsdesk.com ★★★★ Opera Now Set in a Chinese restaurant found in any city anywhere, The Golden Dragon is a compelling fable of modern life. At the heart of this Eastmeets-West tale is the discovery of a tooth in a bowl of soup. It belongs to a kitchen boy, a long way from home and with no papers. He’s looking for his sister, but she’s been forced into a very different kind of service just next door… Funny and shocking in equal measure, this brilliant new opera poignantly captures the horrors of too many lost lives. Peter Eötvös is one of Hungary’s leading composers, whose twelve operas include Three Sisters, Angels in America and Love and Other Demons (Glyndebourne 2008). “I began being baffled and amused, but I ended up haunted and moved” Daily Telegraph

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Arabian Nights fantasy is full of memorable moments as the beautiful Scheherazade spins her enthralling tales. Mendelssohn Holliger Mendelssohn Schubert

Overture: The Hebrides Meta arca Piano Concerto no. 1 Symphony no. 9

Stephen Hough piano Heinz Holliger Mendelssohn’s vivid musical picture of the surging sea around Fingal’s cave is followed by a short piece by tonight’s conductor, written for this orchestra. Mendelssohn’s piano concerto shows many of his strengths, as a dramatic first movement gives way to a lyrical and tender slow section. The finale is a tour de force of fleet fingered virtuosity. Schubert’s last symphony is possibly his greatest masterpiece in any form, a supremely lyrical and imaginative work. The four movements are built on a grand scale and the musical architecture is handled with great care, yet the whole piece unfurls in one majestic sweep. £40, £36, £29, £22, £14 Under 16s and f/t students £10 (includes £2 booking fee) Over 65s and Platinum Friends standby tickets available on the day

JASON MANFORD

Muddle Class

He’s back! It’s been a busy few years for Jason Manford since his last smash-hit stand-up show, but this nationally acclaimed comedian hasn’t changed a bit. Muddle Class promises to feature a wealth of new material about Jason growing up ‘working class’ then finding, over the years, that part of him has become ‘middle class’ - causing much confusion! Delivered with Jason’s amiable charm and captivating wit, this is a show not to be missed. As seen on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You? and The Royal Variety Performance. £29.50 (includes £2 booking fee) Suitable for: ages 13 and over (contains some adult language and themes)
