BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Carmen Ho Rachmaninov Rimsky-Korsakov

Unforged Piano Concerto no. 2 Symphony no. 2 (Antar)

Alexander Malofeev piano Kirill Karabits The concert begins with a short piece by the young British composer Carmen Ho. Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto was a breakthrough piece after years of creative block. Its passionate and lyrical character has deservedly made it a favourite amongst his works. Rimsky-Korsakov hesitated as to whether to call Antar a suite or a symphony, but whatever it’s an enjoyable and striking work. Based on an oriental legend about the adventures of chivalrous Prince Antar, the composer’s flair for magical orchestration and oriental colour is heard to the full in this precursor to his better-known Scheharazade.

ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT Schumann Violin Concerto, Symphony no. 2 Isabelle Faust violin Antonello Manacorda Schumann’s Violin Concerto is full of the composer’s personal lyricism and invention. A strong influence on the later violin concerto of Brahms, its slow movement is particularly beautiful, and the piece as a whole is unjustly neglected. ANDY PARSONS HEALING THE NATION “I was in the middle of a tour when venues had to close due to lockdown – the tour was called Healing The Nation – so that title worked out well. It will turn out to be the longest tour ever, taking three years to complete, and as the tour has gone on, there’s been less and less healing and more and more of the opposite. I could have changed the title but it still seems strangely appropriate and some of the gigs have been rescheduled, so it would prove confusing to existing bookers if the ticket said Healing The Nation but the show was now called My Life in Ballet.” £18 (includes £3 booking fee) Suitable for: ages 14 and over

BBC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Farrenc Overture no. 2 Mendelssohn Violin concerto Berlioz Symphonie fantastique Francesca Dego violin Jordan de Souza There’s a welcome chance to hear music by Louise Farrenc, with her dramatic concert overture dating from the 1830s. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto sounds as fresh as if written in one burst of inspiration. The quicksilver finale is unadulterated enjoyment. The five movements of Berlioz’ stunning Symphonie fantastique embody the visions of a lovesick musician in the grip of an overdose of opium. The idea of his beloved returns in various guises through the work, ending in a nightmarish witches’ sabbath. A profoundly imaginative score, it made the composer’s reputation all over Europe. £42, £38, £31, £24, £16. Under 25s, f/t students £11 (includes £4 booking fee)

We provide schools and colleges with opportunities to experience classical and world music, to create their own music and theatre, and to support their careers. We work with people living with dementia

to help them stay connected and tell their stories creatively in our Finding the Words project. Our popular Musication Station encourages the community to try a musical instrument, whatever their age or ability. To find out more visit anvilarts.org.uk/get-involved
