ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT Mozart Symphony no. 39 Symphony no. 40 Symphony no. 41 (Jupiter) Iván Fischer

Mozart’s last three symphonies were written in a few weeks in summer 1788. They make a satisfying triptych, with the relatively serene no. 39 contrasting with the more agitated and unsettled no. 40. The final symphony sums

up Mozart’s achievement in the form, with a spacious opening movement, an expressive and chromatic slow movement, and one of his most famous minuets. The finale is an exhilarating tour de force.

Symphony no. 102 is one of the finest of all Haydn’s symphonies. Its four movements include a high-spirited finale based on a Croatian folk tune. Mendelssohn’s piano concerto shows many of his strengths, as a dramatic first movement gives way to a lyrical and tender slow section. The finale is full of elegant, fleet-fingered virtuosity. Schubert’s symphony is one of the most melodic and genial pieces that he ever wrote. The four movements are perfectly proportioned and full of delightful music.

THE DAME

starring Peter Duncan (Blue Peter) “My armour, my war paint, the battle out there: it’s all I’ve ever known.” A lost world of seaside entertainment, piers and promenades is brought to life when seasoned Pantomime Dame Ronald Roy Humphrey returns to his Northern roots. As the curtain falls on the last show of the day, Roy is in a wistful, melancholic mood, but as the years fall away, ghosts and memories from the past confront him with what he has spent his whole life trying to forget. The Dame takes us on a journey inside an entertainer’s mind to expose the fragile creature beneath the make-up, bluster and bravado. However many masks we wear, the truth will always be revealed. £20 (includes £3 booking fee) 22
