Application of 'Future Cities' concept and initiative is a trend and becoming the contemporary planning and development approach for urban managers and private sectors in developing cities in the world especially in Europe, Middle East and Japan. The aim of this concept is to reduce the effects of climate change and global warming phenomena as well as to overcome the local environmental issues, natural disasters, increase in the usage of energy and water resources, population growth, urban sprawl and rapid development in urban areas. Specifically, the 'future cities' endeavours to promote and ensure all ideas and initiatives of green growth, green development, smart city, safe city and liveable city to become the agenda in developing cities. The ultimate goal of 'future cities' is to achieve sustainable urban development by realising economic productivity, environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness. Expert Talk 2013 themed 'Exploring the Future Cities' is the appropriate platform to promote and discuss ideas, concepts and initiatives of `Future Cities’ especially from the Japanese experience.
