Speech from the Minister

M

y ministry is pleased to be part and parcel of the Anwar Sidi Rally Bulletin on this auspicious occasion of the 61st edition of the KCB Safari

JULY 2013 | ISSUE NO. 89

I am delighted that Safari Rally is now a fully-fledged African Rally Championship event and indeed one of the best in the continent.” Hon. Dr. Hassan Wario Arero (PhD) Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts

Rally 2013. I’m reliably informed that this motoring Magazine has been in existence for the last 12 years. And for the 89th issue, it’s desirable that the Sidis continue to impart the motorsports family with considerable amounts of publicity both in the social, print and mainstream media. On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, I take this opportunity to congratulate the CEO of the Magazine, Mr. Anwar Sidi for a job well done. It is my hope that he will keep us updated on the latest news in motor racing regularly. It is commendable that the Safari Rally has attracted more than 80participants - most of them from Kenya and the East and Central Africa region. This is a good indicator of the growth of the sport of rallying in our country. In addition, the Government has continued to steadily improve on sports infrastructure and programs which will also benefit the rally sport immensely. We continue to encourage our sports federations to host international events such as the Kenya Open and the Safari Rally in order to provide Kenyans with higher levels of competition against which we can measure ourselves. In order to improve on the management of sports in the country, the Sports Act 2012 was earlier in the year enacted. This legislation will provide the legal parameters within which different sports disciplines will be managed

and regulated in Kenya. I call upon all sports organisations to improve the management of their respective sports disciplines in line with the Act. I am delighted that Safari is now a fully-fledged African Rally Championship event and indeed one of the best in the continent. The Kenya Motor Sports Federation must work in partnership with Government Ministries such as the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts and others, to promote the sport and put together a formidable structure as we aspire to push our case in the FIA World Rally Championship. It is my wish to see Kenyans perform well in the rally sport as they have been doing in other sports such as Athletics, Rugby and Women’s Volleyball. In conclusion, I would like to appreciate the international drivers who have shown faith in the “world’s toughest rally” by participating in this prestigious event. I thank you for playing a part in ensuring that this event remains an important and exciting international championship. I also commend all the local drivers who have participated in this year’s event. Finally, I thank all the sponsors who have made this event possible, particularly the title sponsors, Kenya Commercial Bank Limited. I wish you all success in your future endeavours. Thank you all and God bless you all. Hon. Dr. Hassan Wario Arero (PhD) Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts

SPEECH FROM THE FIA VICE PRESIDENT

T

It’s amazing that with the global economic recession the world has had to contend with, high-tech cars remain an integral part of the KCB KNRC” Surinder

he KCB sponsored Kenya National Rally Championship is to be one of the healthiest rally championships in Africa today. Last year, entry average levels of the KNRC were impressive with KCB Safari Rally having an entry of 84 drivers and had attracted competitors from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Rwanda. Compare this to entry levels in South African National Rally Championship which last year had 35 entries in some of the rallies and 55 in ARC Sasol Rally and here in Kenya we have 55 plus in all rallies. I would say the KCB - KNRC is the best national rally championship in the whole continent of Africa. With the help of KCB sponsorship the KMSF has united the Kenyan Motor Clubs to organize a good series and competitors are investing in state-of-the-art cars from around the world. It’s amazing that with the global economic recession the world has had to contend with, high-tech cars remain an integral part of the KCB KNRC. The President of the FIA Jean Todt has a lot of background in rallying and is passionate about bringing the WRC back to its old glory days experienced during the Group B era. Under his direction many FIA working groups have come up with ideas of how to revive the WRC and one of the ideas was to go to longer endurance type stages in the WRC. This

coupled with limitation of spare parts and tyres would put more emphasis on saving the cars rather that flat out driving. This idea would suit the Safari Rally for a comeback into the WRC in the future….. But most manufacturers have got used to the one service park concept with their sponsors doing a lot of corporate hospitality in the service park so are resisting changes proposed by the FIA for the future of the WRC. One must also remember that Kenya is changing very fast and the old concept of the long Safari Rally is becoming more and more difficult with the increase in the population around the country. Finding areas where we can rally at speed without endangering other road users are becoming more difficult to find and the new “boda boda” taxi concept using motorcycles around the country is quite frightening for a speeding rally cars. I think we have to begin to re-invent motor rallying in Kenya and not reminisce about the past glory of the Safari Rally all the time. A famous book comes to mind……”Who Stole my Cheese” which is about how one must adapt with the times …… and if you continue to rally as you did in the past then one day you will wake up and say …..”Who stole my cheese !!” Surinder is also one of the 11 Directors sitting in the Kenya Motor Sport Federation Board.

THE YEAR THAT WAS: Tundo, Cavenagh dominate 2012 rally season

JULY 2013 | ISSUE NO. 89

T

his 2012 Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) Division One showdown has proven to be one of the most competitive on record with all of the top drivers in identically powered Group N cars; and often only a few seconds separating them after hundreds of kilometers of competitive driving. However, Subaru crews found themselves on the receiving end whenever they took the fight to “high-flying” Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 adversaries with no victory forth coming thus far in four seasons. What’s more, stage wins have also been few and far between for Subaru occupants with 2008 KNRC Champion Baldev

Chager “Boldy” being the fastest man in this ‘struggling’ group. Chager- who had a few stage wins under his belt - remains a loyal client to the Subaru make (over the years) though he is now rumored to be shopping around for an EVO in his comeback bid. BUMPER ENTRIES: The season witnessed particularly the biggest entry in competitor partake. Its amazing that Kenya has over 70 entries on average which was the biggest in the entire African continent but few or none of the Kenyan crews participated in the FIA African Rally Championship series which was won by Mohamed Essa from Zambia.

In 2005 Kenya had an average of 35 entries while the Tanzanian NRC’s had just 16 in 2012. The KNRC was much more competitive than the ARC. Economic Recession hit the world and Kenya too, but the influx of the state-of-the-art Group N contraptions was an amazing fact. TEAMMATES RULE THE ROOST: Eventual 2012 Kenya Champion Carl “Flash” Tundo and his Dalbit Petroleum teammate Alastair Cavenagh have literally taken the KNRC Division 1 category by storm winning 7 out of 8 rallies. On many occasions, the duo would

The Haraka Mamas, Warembo Bila Makap, the Rally Queens, the Ladies Luck of Michelle Van Tongeren and Safina Khan added immense zest to the season. Natash Di Cangio, became the first woman navigator in 28 years after Sylvia King to win a round of the KNRC. British and Finnish Rally champion disapproved the Subaru-EVO9 notion. Tapio set hearts pounding and won considerable spectator applause when he set the fastest time in an N16 . He proved to many that the N16 could also perform if “well driven”, observed a spectator. Tapio had been offered the car by MRT racing of Manvir S Baryan in the Guru Nanak prior to his exit in the second stage . “The Subaru N16 seems to be getting more reliable over time. After plenty of research and thought they are now performing. “Its proven to be very fast on smooth flowing stages but still seems to lack the edge on jumps and extreme rough conditions. This year not many events have favored the N16 as its been rough and full of big jumps,” observed Chager. Chager didn’t score points in the Safari after one rear arm snapped out of the blue making the car to loose control. “We hit a culvert badly on my side and damaged suspension then hurt my lower back so was in total agony. It was terrible as it was only 10kms to the finish,” recalls Chager.

YOUNGSTERS IN MOTION: Division 2 contender Manvir and eventual Division three champion Jassi Chatthe from Kisumu performed really well and cruised to chalk up top ten positions. Peter Horsey and his female navigator Bella Erskine-has displayed occasional flashes of brilliance more so in their Mombasa turf where they came second. Fourth overall for Peter in the Safari wasn’t that bad. Another youngster Raaji Bharij has been trim on his lines, his best moment being Day One overnight leader in the Nanyuki Rally. Outgoing Division 2 champion Onkar Singh Rai struggled in Division 1 ranks due to a series of mechanical gremlins. “I am happy with my car though its just slightly under-powered than an EVO, so I guess I will have to push even harder. Teething problems are finished- I would like to think- but you never know in a rally.” Three times KNRC champion Azar Anwar had only one podium finish so far in Division One during Guru Nanak, but continued to post more championship points which places him 3rd overall in the KNRC overall. Another driver who impressed in Division 1 is youngster Quentin Mitchell. Youngster Quentin chalked-up a career best third overall position in the Safari and finished fifth and fourth overall in this year’s Eldoret and Nanyuki Rallies. “Fifth in Eldoret was apparently not a bad result for the first car on the road,” observed Quentin.

arl “Flash” Tundo was in imperious form in the season opening KCB Micro-Banking Rally held in Nyeri and its environs. The venue for the “big spectator bash” was Ruringu Stadium where thousands of fans were glued to their seats. Ian Duncan romped home second in his EVO9, 1.41minutes behind Tundo who clocked 1.08.51hours after winning six of the 13 stages run. Duncan claimed only one stage (CS3) while Alastair Cavenagh had five though stymied with excruciating punctures. Cavenagh despite finishing third in 1.12.35 was the earlier pace setter when he went to bed (on Day One) with a second cushion from youngster Peter Horsey. Baldev Chager managed fourth overall position with no stage win while Azar Anwar finished fifth, Onkar Rai sixth, Hardeep 7th, Manvir S. Baryan 8th, Don Smith 9th and Sandeep Jandu 10. In finishing 8th, Manvir opened an early 80-point lead in Division Two Class. Jassi Chatthe and Gugu Panesar in 11th position savored the Division 3 win thus taking an early lead in the Championship. Likewise, Jonathan Somen and Richard Hechle won the Classic Car Cup by bringing home their Datsun in 14th place. Issa Amwari in 12th was the surprise S Class winner teaming up with Job Njiru while Leo Varese and Kigondu Kareith in 22nd position won the 2WD Class followed defending champion James Kirimi and Dennis Mwenda. The two wheel drive had three VW Golfs in the podium. Nyeri also witnessed some good humored banter of the Toyota Vitzs which featured Victor Okundi and Sammy Nyori. This was the first time the Vitz was gracing the rally section and it was an exciting rivalry between the two F2 driver. Only 34 drivers survived the full course. Non-finishers were 15 including Alasdair Keith (CS12), Tejvir Rai (CS10), Mohammed Noor (CS10), Peter Horsey and Geoff Mayes on CS9 and Alex Horsey on CS2. Nyeri saw most of the top drivers survive the full course. “Nyeri retirement was due to fuel pump failure,” said Tej’s navigator George Mwangi. True to his word, Tundo’s win served up great moments ahead for fans. After skipping the season-ending Mombasa Rally in December and winning the penultimate Guru Nanak Rally in 2011, Tundo promised that he would launch a vigorous comeback and win more rallies in the season. And his plans got off to a flying start in the Mount Kenya region when he and his navigator Tim Jessop racked >>

Tundo and Cavenagh shared 95% of the stage wins. Defending champion Ian Duncan was left to rue a puncture on. CS9 but drove on it to the end of the section. Baldev Chager and his partner Raju Sehmi raced the Oilibya/Kabras Subaru N16 as the road sweepers. “I have now come to grips with the Subaru N16 but I got increasingly frustrated by being first on the road but I am happy to be back to the finish in one piece. The gravel was also very loose and it was really tough for me,”said Chager. The rally headquarters were at Green Hills hotel. The super special stage was repeated twice on Day 2 and once on Day One. fter clearing the ground with all his adversaries in Nyeri, Carl “Flash” Tundo made it two wins in a row in his home event around Lake Bogoria

region. And following one of the closest fought battles in recent history, two -times KNRC champion and Dalbit Petroleum/Monster Energy drink sponsored Alastair Cavenagh promised better displays on his Mitsubishi EVO9. Cavenagh had the following to say after finishing second behind teammate Carl “Flash” Tundo in the KCB Biashara Banking Rally at Lake Bogoria Resort: “We had a really good fight with Flash in this event and I think it is probably one of the tightest battles ever seen in the KNRC over that competitive distance with neither crew experiencing mechanical problems. The route was very fast in most places with a lot of rocks and driving with that speed and commitment required pin point accuracy as well as a bit of luck! It was an intense battle with Flash leading the first stage by 13 seconds; we then took back 3 seconds after the special stage going into service. The 3rd stage which was very rough up the escarpment saw us take 21 seconds further out of Flash thereby moving us into the lead by 8 seconds,” said Cavenagh. “We backed off too much on CS4 as I was not confident in the notes which had been made in a recce car with no rear suspension and so going into the final stage flash was again 8 seconds in the lead,” continued Cavenagh. Determined not to give up without a fight, Cavenagh and Lawrence pushed hard throughout the penultimate stage only to be seriously frustrated towards the end by getting caught for 5 kms in the dust of a tail-ender who had retired and was driving out of the stage and after that by 2 spectator cars also driving out. Flash eventually won that stage by a mere 1 second having only encountered 1 spectator car himself and showing how fierce the level of competition now is between these two teammates. “It was a truly fantastic battle today and I am glad to have come out on top. I’m really happy with a 1-2 Dalbit finish,” said Tundo, whilst nonetheless acknowledging that Alastair had been disadvantaged by running first on the road. As a sign of the speed that the Dalbit Petroleum/Monster energy crew is driving at, it is interesting to note that 3rd place went to former champion Azar Anwar who had a clean run but came in a whopping 9mins 30s behind the duo of Tundo and Cavenagh. Ian Duncan burst his EVO9’s radiator on CS3 and kissed the event goodbye while Baldy Chager of Oilibya/Kabras suffered a similar fate. Fourth placed Onkar S. Rai extended massive kudos to Flash and Alastair for some blistering

pace! Said He: “The rally started very well but right near the end I made a silly mistake and hit a slow ditch very hard, which made me back off for the remaining 10kms or so. The next stage was super special and having not know what damage I had done to the car took that easy as well. After service was complete was the ascent up the hill which I took maybe too easy but never had any problems which was the aim. Having seen guys fall out of the rally the aim was to keep it clean to the end. Down the hill we were not up to the pace as I was trying to protect 4th and did not want to do anything silly. The last stage was supposed to be the same as the rest but the front right brake disc cracked and came off in the first 5kilometers so we lost all brakes! So had to nurse the car to the end. Raaji Bharij on his first rally with new Team Kibos and new partnership with Geoff Mayes caused quite a stir when he finished 5th incidentally on 3 wheels! “In the first section we had two punctures and lost over 9 minutes. We came into service and replaced. In the next two sections, we took time off everyone in front of me with fourth fastest on cs3 and 3rd fastest in CS4. We then came back to second service, sorted problem with brake caliper and went into 50km CS5. Our aim was to attack and learn some more, just over half way into the stage rear right bearing failed. When the bearing failed, the hub came off with the shock and tire- so the car dropped to the floor. We decided to keep going. We set third fastest time in the stage with the problem. Geoff then sat on the bonnet during rough transport off road and we managed to get car to super special. We completed the super special and got car to finish on three wheels! I am really happy about Team Kibos support that will help us achieve our goals this year,” said Raaji. Ben Muchemi drove impressively to claim 8th. Hardeep S. Rehsi came 10th. Charles Hinga and his navigator Noriss Ongalo managed 11th despite multiple gremlins. Manvir S. Baryan returned 12th navigated by Shameer Yusuf in their Subaru N16. “Our strategy is in a similar way to the previous events- to get as many finishes as possible; only thing the terrains and stages will be different so we can only decide on driving strategy after the recce. For now as for getting to grips with the car, we are constantly learning new things as we cover more mileage,” said Baryan. For Baryan, Nakuru was his fourth rally since the Guru Nanak 2011 debut. Finishing in 4 out of 5 events so far was awesome record for the Athman siblings-Khalfan and Abdulaziz were finally back since Kisumu last year. But 17th out of 30 didn’t feel good enough for the brothers who had first used the ex-Asad Anwar N11 they had revamped and remapped adequately. “We wanted to reach top-end speeds but car could not sit well on the slippy gravel. We were going moderately on the roughs and trying to push in the straights,” said Abdulaziz. Rashid Kabi and Nehreen Ismail got 19th overall. Three Mombasa based Said Hamad, Izhar Mirza and Paras Pandya were finished in 20th, 21st and 22nd respectively which was quite unusual. “At CS1 we picked a puncture on the rear right and lost 7 minutes. Since Said Hamad had just recovered from an operation then we had to ease off. It was really good but tough,” said Said Hamad’s new navigator Mutuma Marimba.

Izhar didn’t sound so happy: “Fast rough! No brakes! Puntures! And not fair for 2wd in front of some group n’s.” Falgun Bhojak, Paras Pandya’s navigator, had this to say: “We had a bad crash against a ditch in stage one because we were sitting in the dust of Leo (Varese). We broke a sump-guard, damaged shocks, bullbar finished, cracked windscreen, broken rim, bent front arm, bent trailing arm-all in one crash.” Eldoret based Ravi Chhaniyara was all smile with his debut on the driving seat. Ravi was nervous Initially and had a bad off in the first 3 kms but settled down. Kisumu based Jaspreet Singh Chathe and Gugu Panesar came finished 24th and were happy to at least bring the ex-Lee Rose EVO9 car back home. “At CS1, we had a punctured radiator after the river crossing. Third section we lost gears and managed to repair the links in section losing around 40mins. In section 4 we had a puncture. Section 5 we had a broken exhaust that fell off,” recounted Gugu. returning 26th overall on the leaderboard. KQ pilot Samira Khan and quad rider and debutant Chantel Young managed 28th in an exciting all female crew. Victor Okundi and debutante female navigator Mionki Tuta gave the Toyota Vitz its first ever podium (3rd) in 2WD and 29th overall. “The event was a true test of patience. For us in the 2wd we had to depend more on momentum on the rocky uphill which meant you pound the car to keep moving. Otherwise in the car we bonded almost instantly with Tuta. For a first timer she did very well. And Quatulu certified herself KNRC (Rhino Charge) tamer,” said Okundi who caught a fellow 2wd stuck in the narrow loose uphill rocks and we also got stuck. “We assisted each other for nearly 10 minutes and were overtaken by two cars,” said Victor. It was disheartening that Victor’s Vitz opponent Sammy Nyorri couldn’t survive the course. “The baby was performing so well, good speed and power. After the first few kilometers after getting through the gate to the sisal farm, I heard some funny noise at the back and thought I had broken a shock, took CS1 at a very high speed and just about 2km to flying finish the car swerved on the road an was uncontrollable. I thought it was a puncture but the brakes were gone. Eventually managed to stop the car only to realise the rear left wheel had come off with the hub forcing us to retire. We start preparing the car for kisumu now.” The 2WD driver Gurmit Thethy retired after someone threw a stone and shattered his door glass and in the event theVW Golf GTi car lost ground “and we broke the front shock into two pieces and couldn’t continue.” In this rally, the 2WD class was not for pace- setters but slower people. Everybody who set a pace retired including Varese who was lying 19th overall after CS2. His car gave up on him as well. Patrick Kibaara was 2nd in 2WD and brought back his Levin in 27th overall.

2012 Kisumu Rally Round Duncan wins as disaster halts Kisumu rally

efending Champion Ian Duncan co-driven by Amaar Slatch in his National Oil Mitsubishi EVO9 savored his maiden win of the 2012 season. The victory came barely four months after the season closing Mombasa Rally in December 2011. Kabras Sugar Subaru N16 ace Baldev Chager was all smiles in second while Team Kibos Raaji Bharij got his first ever career podium navigated by Geoff Mayes. When the dust settled, Baldev candidly admitted that the rally was very challenging. Mombasa based Nadeem Kana and his partner James Mwangi won the 2WD class for the second consecutive occasion after the memorable victory in the

preceding Nakuru Rally. But following the fatal accident involving car number 26 of Sandeep Jandu and Gurdeep Mehangra “Dips”, organizers halted proceedings and declared legendary driver Ian Duncan the winner of Equator Motor Club (EMC) organized Rally. This was in accordance with the “force majure” rule which handed Duncan his first win of the 2012 season following the season closing Mombasa Rally in 2011. A stunned Clerk of the Course Amit Matharu posted a bulletin confirming the cancellation of the three-stage last loop which totaled 24kilometers. Matharu said in the afternoon bulletin posted at the Chemelil Simba Yard: “Please note that due to a force majure

situation, the clerk of the course in consultation with the stewards, has decided to end the rally after TC (time control) 8 service in. Therefore, all cars will check in for 20minutes service, thereafter go to refuel zone for re-fueling and return to holding area awaiting departure at 1500hrs in a convoy to podium finish at Jomo Kenyatta grounds Kisumu.” The three stages cancelled were repeat runs near Simba, Songhor and Muhoroni. After two successful rounds, season pacemakers Cavenagh and Tundo got caught out by same jump. The dynamic duo of the 2 times KNRC champions Cavenagh and “Flash” Tundo both came unstuck on the very same jump. Cavenagh admittedly hit the jump much too fast having not listened to a

Laurence. “’I was concerned about a motorbike in the road further ahead and completely ignored the call made by Gavin’ admitted Alastair, adding: “ We hit the jump flat out launching us high into the air and upon landing we split the oil sump,” Cavenagh said. The battle at the top was intense. Cavenagh nonetheless went on to post fastest time on the stage beating his teammate Tundo by a mere one second -demonstrating yet again how intense the battle between these 2 former champions has become. Carl hit the same jump and landed on the nose of the car damaging the radiator and leading to his retirement 2 stages later. “Although this has been a bad result for the team, it does at least make the championship a little closer once again seeing as neither Alastair or myself scored points and it now means that everyone will really have to attack in the Safari where more points are up for grabs!” said Tundo. Among the casualties in the event were Tundo (radiator), Cavenagh, Onkar Rai (radiator), Peter Horsey (electrical), Haraka Mamas -Joan Nesbitt and T. Jones (rear axle), Alasdair Keith (rolled) and Tejvir Rai. The new Subaru Impreza N16 of Tejvir Rai and George Mwangi caught fire end of stage 6 control. “We don’t know what the cause of the fire was. We just handed in our time card and the car caught fire. Luckily we managed to put it off.” Tejvir’s navigator George Mwangi said.

T

he mad rush for 60th KCB Safari Rally accolades was palpable from the word go-but it was Carl “Flash Tundo and his partner Tim Jessop who really had the last laugh in their Mitsubishi EVO9 car. Rightly so, Tundo won his fourth career Safari when he eclipsed a hard- charging Ian Duncan by a mere 15 seconds! But the much-talked-about driver in the first two days was non other than the 1999 and 2010 Alastair Cavenagh. He was leading by 54 seconds after stage 3 having set fastest stage times on every stage of the event. Then on stage 4, a rim split that compelled him to change the puncture. At this juncture, Cavenagh knew full well that he had lost the rally and thereafter admitted candidly that he failed to pay due attention when he hit a big ditch too fast and put the fan through radiator. >>

“Obviously, I am destined never to win the Safari,” regretted Cavenagh. On the last day, Duncan was charging harder and harder to catch Tundo, hoping to reclaim the diadem he last won in the glorious WRC days in 1994. Duncan then set quickest times on all the two stages available on the last day but this wasn’t good enough to assure him of the coveted title as he settled for second overall. Youngster Quentin Mitchell was elated with his best ever result albeit being 14.39minutes behind Tundo. So was Zambian Mohammed Essa and his Zimbabwe navigator Greg Stead who soldiered on the ARC front and savored their career best fourth place Safari finish only on the former’s second attempt since 2008. To describe the last three days in a few words, Essa quipped: “ I would say it was rough, rough and very intense.” Essa had plans of an all out attack but this was nipped in the bud moments after he picked up the puncture on the first stage of the second day. This saw his chances slip away so he decided to back off and consolidate what he had. For Team Kibos’ Jassi Chatte, finishing the Safari in the ex-Lee Rose EVO9 was a big achievement “and a top ten even made us happier.” SUPPLEMENTARY CLASS Simon Sharpe and his partner Crispin Kennedy gave the crowd-pleasing Platz hybrid SPV car its maiden victory in supplementary class. Interestingly, Sharpe, whose SPV contraption ranked 5th overall in the

whole rally, said: “Navigator was spot on as usual. We were doing very well in main class, I think we were lying fourth but unfortunately we got the bogey time for yesterday (Day 2).” Jazzy Chana claimed second place as Michelle Van Tongeren won the Coupe Des Dames and third in supplementary: “This event is not called safari for nothing. You have to persevere, its takes a lot of courage and energy to do the Safari. If you are strong enough and have luck, then you get through.” FLASH FLOODS Flash floods halted Day Two proceedings in Kajiado region causing the cancellation of the long 87kilometer CS4 stage which ran from Parane to Il-Bissel. 2WD CLASS Adnan Suhail was back with a bang when he won the Safari. He won four of the five stages handing the second car a 3 minute lead which is really fantastic. “I am over the moon. We prepared the car for two good months and I think this is the fruit of our hard work,” said Adnan. Champion James Kirimi took second. “To bring the car back home in one piece for me is an achievement,” said Kirimi. Two times champion Leo Varese rued the gremlins which saw him to settle for 6th overall. “Day 1 we had a broken disc and lost time at service. Day 2 it was fuel pump failure in the section and we lost more time in cs 2. On Sunday morning we were 10th out 18 cars in the class and day 3 we were able to have a clean run without damaging the car.”

T

wo times former Kenya Champion Alastair Cavenagh ended 15 years of trying as he finally laid his hands on the coveted Mombasa Rally accolade. Winning his home event in South Coast attested Cavenagh’s “fast and furious” antics and he led the rally from start to finish. For once, Cavenagh put behind him gremlins of the Safari whereby he had led every single stage prior to his exit.Like Cavenagh, homeboy Peter Horsey savored his career best second place when he swapped his crowd-pleasing “Moto Moto” Datsun with his brother’s Mitsubishi EVOX. But asked if he will permanently drive the EVOX, Horsey candidly admitted that the “Moto Moto” was more fun to drive. Peter, however promised to take the fight to Cavenagh in Nanyuki after trailing him with 54seconds. He lost time with a half spin on the opening super special but a spirited comeback which lasted for almost 160 high speed kilometres. This saw the 2010 African Pirelli Star Driver claw back the time to take second overall back at the finish in Diani. Legendary driver Ian Duncan and his partner Amaar Slatch completed the podium dash. It was however a bitter pill for Carl Tundo to swallow after he finished outside top 10 in as many years. Nevertheless, the Monster Energy/Dalbit Petroleum team of two times former KNRC winners Cavenagh and Tundo has proven almost impossible to catch this season having won 4 of the 5 rallies held thus far. Quentin Mitchell proved he has quite some nerve; so fourth overall wasn’t that bad. Alex Horsey sitting with Tariq Malik for the first time, gave the Moto Moto Datsun pick-up fifth position. “Its great to finally win the coast rally after 15 years of trying,” quipped Cavenagh as he savored his first victory since the KCB Personal Loans Rally in Voi in February 2011. goodbye after they rolled their Subaru gc8 car on CS2. Other retirees included Jonathan Somen(Ford Escort) after the propeller shaft packed up, Yusuf Khalid(Toyota Levin) with a blown engine and Anwar Pandya (Subaru N10) with a damaged diff. Shaheed Wissanji was not only ecstatic of 10th overall-winning Group S class in a Subaru was a dream come true. The 2WD class was won by Nadeem Kana who clung atop the Formula Two table after winning his third win of the 2012 season. The 2WD had only four finishers. The big list of F2 retirements was composed of Rajbir Rai -son of two time former Kenya champion Sarbi Rai, Leo Varese, Victor Okundi, champion James Kirimi and pace-setter Khalid Yusuf among others. Second in 2WD was Patrick Kibaara in the Levin, Dennis Mwenda in the Golf and Sammy Nyorri in the “baby” Vitz. Gurmit Thethy’s VW Golf GTi was out of after the fuel pump failure. “We repaired it within the section but were time barred by the time we made it through,” said Gurmit. Defending champion James Kirimi was also caught out in the long stage. “Our rear hub broke 20kilometers into the long section and the wheel came off ending our race in agony,” said

Kirimi. Dennis Mwenda was equally ecstatic of surviving the tormenting and slippery route course. “It was a very fast and slippery rally. We had problems in all stages. We broke the drive shaft in cs2. Mombasa’s Khalid Yusuf, driving the “Waka Waka” Toyota Levin of his son (Navid Khalid) impressed by setting the fastest time on the CS2 stage but due to engine oil pump gremlins he retired on service-in at Mwachanda Primary School in Kinango.

arl “Flash” Tundo navigated by Tim Jessop in Mitsubishi EVO9 registered his fourth win of the season in the Nanyuki based KCB Advantage Banking Rally. Tundo’s victory was announced by clerk of the course Nazir Yakub following the cancellation of the last stage (CS11) at Batian View. Heavy rains ended proceedings at penultimate stage only with 5kilometers of competitive driving to spare and after drivers had regrouped at Batian ready for the would-be final showdown. This was Tundo’s second career Nanyuki Rally. He had won it in the 2005 edition with the Subaru N10 and in this time round in his current Mitsubishi EVO9 in 2012. He beat teammate Alastair Cavenagh by a mere 22 seconds to claim his fourth win of the 2012 KNRC season.”The rally was really good. I am happy to have won Nanyuki for the first time in my Mitsubishi,” said Tundo. Alastair’s second position in Nanyuki saw him cling to third in the KNRC tussle with 250 points. In 3rd position was Baldev Chager whose Subaru continued losing power in Nanyuki. Quentin Mitchell settled for fourth place. >>

As Tundo and Cavenagh proved unstoppable in the Division 1 battle, Quentin spent the entire day tussling with Chager for a podium slot which he eventually lost in the latter stages of the rally. Overnight leader Raaji Bharij could only manage 11th overall. He went off in Day 2 and his EVO9 come through the bush; losing 6minutes in the process. Alastair had his run on the Loldaiga section troubled when he drove the last 13kilometers on a puncture and lost 6 seconds to Tundo. Jassy Chathe’s fifth earned him the Division 3 Championship title with two rounds to spare while Azar Anwar settled for 6th. Nanyuki registered a number of casualties. Peter Horsey wasn’t so lucky. He retired after the engine of his “Moto Moto” Datsun pick up ceased. 2WD ace Patrick Kibaara, Jonathan Somen in the Classic Cup, Jeff Mburu in F2 and Munir Khan also retired. Hardeep Rehsi and Ravi Soni rolled the Mitsubishi EVO9 car on CS6. Nanyuki had a total of 32 finishers-six in 2WD, 17 in N class, 8 in the S class and one in the Classic Car Cup. Jaswinder Chana won the S Class in 14th place while Aslam Khan claimed the Classic Car Cup honours when he returned his Porsche 911 machine in 21st overall position. Leonardo Varese was second in 2WD behind Dennis Mwenda. Gurmit Thethy finished 3rd in 2WD followed by Sammy Nyorri, Nadeem Kana and Victor Okundi. In the S Class, Jaswinder was followed by Mahesh Halai (16th), Alasdair Keith (17th), John Muigai (18th), Hussein Malik (22nnd), Joe Muchiri (25th), Edward Maina (27th) and Devan Bundia (29th). Coast Pekee’s Izhar Mirza of Mombasa drove in stellar fashion to win Division 2 class. He was followed by Marvin Baryan of Multiple Hauliers and Fly 540 Chief Executive Don Smith. Mirza finished Nanyuki tour in 7th overall place which was good enough top propel him to the KNRC Division Two summit. He was all smiles upon driving into the Sportsman Arms’ Cer-

emonial finish. Manvir finished 10th overall to take second in Division Two while Smith sealed the podium dash in 13th place. “Its was really tough, tricky and fast. We had to balance it right. We could have been faster but chose to conserve the car and keep one pace to avoid any mishaps. We went off a bit on the second run of 29km stage but wasn’t that bad. We had to step it down quite a bit thereafter,” said Izhar. Dennis Mwenda and his partner Edward Maina finally claimed their maiden 2WD victory. Mwenda eclipsed VW Golf GTi driver Leo Varese by a four minutes margin to win his first ever rally on his first outing in his Toyota Sprinter GT. Mwenda was ecstatic of winning this event in his birthplace. “Its absolutely fantastic to win in Nanyuki, my birthplace, on my son’s birthday and on the maiden event of our new car. We had a clean run. The car did not miss a beat. We were flying through the sections,” said Mwenda. Leo wad happy with a podium finish. “The rally was good, muddy and twisty. But we lost the chance to win it on the 10km stage when one pump failed and gave us a miss. We rectified it later but lost almost 2minutes to Denis. But we are happy to get second,” said Leo. Overnight leader Gurmit Thethy sealed the podium rush in third place.”After having held first position since yesterday (Friday) to mid of today (Saturday), we got stuck in the second last stage. We then lost communication and wipers but still managed to finish 3rd,” said Gurmit. The 2WD class saw a number of cars fall by the wayside. Series leader Nadeem Kana finished 6th overall in his Subaru 2WD car. Patrick Kibaara retired after the car sheering rear studs and the wheel overtook them. “We had already gone through CS5 and retired on the transport road section en-route to CS6,” said Kibaara. Victor Okundi navigated by Tuta Mionki won the battle of the Toyoya Vitz cars after finishing 4th ahead Sammy Nyorri in fifth. Munir Khan’s 2WD comeback ended in misery after the former 2WD contender broke the ball joint on his VW Golf GTi.

arl “Flash” Tundo earned himself a third career Kenya National Rally Championship title in Eldoret navigated by Tim Jessop. This was Jessop’s fourth KNRC following championship wins 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2012. “I’m very happy to win the Championship and the (Eldoret) Rally. There is now one more feat this weekend and this is to get my new born baby,” Tundo said. The KCB Asset Finance Rally-the seventh and penultimate round of the KNRC- ended at Salaba Academy in Iten while the Podium celebration and Prize Giving were conducted at KCB West Branch and Lochab Centre in Eldoret respectively. Tundo timed 1.05.09 hours to eclipse legendary Ian Duncan by a mere 45 seconds. In winning the Western Kenya Motor Club (WKMC) tour, Tundo achieved his third career win in Eldoret following wins in the 2009 and 2010 editions. The feat also attested to Flash’s supremacy given that this was his fifth win of the 2012 KNRC season with other victories being achieved in Nyeri, Nakuru, Safari Rally in June and Nanyuki in August. The 2008 KNRC Champion Baldev Chager and his partner Raju Sehmi clocked 1.08.10hours to finish third. Tundo had his campaign boosted when his Dalbit Petroleum teammate Alastair Cavenagh retired at CS3 end. “We hit a rock and cracked the gearbox casing and had to retire at the end of the section. But I’m glad we are still the fastest crews on Watspot ,” Cavenagh’s navigator Gavin Laurence said. Tundo attributed his success to to the input of his navigator Tim Jessop. “Tim has been brilliant all season. I hope the youngsters will now bring in good competition next year,” added Tundo. As Cavenagh retired, Duncan and Tundo embarked on some exciting exchanges of exhilarating displays. Cavenagh claimed the first two stages, Duncan the third and Tundo the last one. Azar Anwar cruised home 4th, 2.42minutes behind the winner. Fifth was Quentin Mitchell followed by Jassy Chathe who won Division Three. Izhar Mirza won Division 2 in 7th place. a 2.30minutes penalty for a gearbox change in service. Tenth overall was Don Smith who finished third in Division two behind Izhar and Manvir. Aslam Khan won the Classic Car Cup upon finishing 21st overall. Anthony Tibo returned from sabbatical and claimed 22nd place. “Eldoret Rally was really a shakedown, a rally to get the cobwebs out. I have not driven competitively for a year, so it was important to get the car to the finish, and also being our sponsors home rally (Menengai Oil, Kabras and Raiply), we were keen to get the finish for them too,” said Tibo. Jaswinder Chana won Group S followed by his brother Jasmeet Chana and Alasdair Keith. Dennis Mwenda won the 2WD Class while Aslam Khan won the Classic Car Cup. Niaz Bashir finished second in 2WD followed by Nadeem Kana whose third overall placed earned him the 2WD championship title. “Its really a great feeling. I attribute this to consistency and determination. We were quite unlucky when rains caught us in Nanyuki but I’m happy that we overcame our problems in Eldoret,” said Mwangi. The rally started with the cancellation of the early morning 59kilometer CS1 stage. The stage was cancelled after one of the top driver cited safety concerns on the long stretch and stopped his car in the middle of the stage on grounds that there was a blockage by a track as well as lots of traffic which prompted organisers to cancel the stage. Jeff Mburu, son of Peter Mburu, and Rodney Muriuki in their Toyota Levin came 30th overall and 4th in 2WD. This was Mburu’s maiden rally finish. Phyllis Wambui in Sammy Nyorri’s Martlink Racing Levin and navigated by Steven Nyorri became the first ever lady in 2012 to score points in 2WD class. Wambui finished 37th in 2WD and 8th in 2WD.

arl Tundo and Tash Di Cangio became the first ever brother and sister crew to win a round of the Kenya National Rally Championship following brilliant display in Suswa and Kedong territory. The 2003 National Formula Two Champion Charan Thethy claimed the 2WD accolade with his younger brother Dalbir Thethy completing the podium rivalry after a record 14 competitors in this class fell by the wayside. The event had only two finishers in formula two category. “It was a very tough rally, but really exciting to lead my brother to a 1-2 finish. What’s more, Arshad Khan guided his brother Aslam Khan to victory in the Classic Car Cup. Aslam who incidentally is the motor personality of the years 2011 and 1989, sealed the Classic car Cup title in Eldoret but was using the Guru Nanak to test his Posche 911 for 2013 EA Safari Classic Rally. Don Smith and his navigator Bob Kaugi relished the Kenya National Rally Championship Division 2 title victory. The Subaru Impreza N12 duo, however, had their campaign effectively sewn up when Izhar Mirza and Manvir Singh Baryan failed to master the rockery of the Sikh Union organized 33rd KCB Guru Nanak

Rally. Don Smith won the Division Two title with 485points while Izhar settled for second place on 405 points while Manvir wraped up his 2012 season on 390. The KNRC division 2 title has exchanged hands between Manvir, Izhar and Smith, but Kaugi reckons that consistency was the key to the great effort. The 33rd edition of the KCB Guru Nanak Rally lived up to its billing as the toughest in the season. The eighth and last round of the 2012 KNRC went down in the folklore as perhaps the toughest ever “man and machine affair” traversing some of the most challenging and picturesque terrains on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and handing crews a real test of the volcanic ash soil that’s synonyms with the WRC Safari Rally. A bumper entry of 79 entries didn’t just surpass expectations of organizers, but was a clear indication that the Guru Nanak is only second to the prestigious Safari Rally. The rally was flagged off outside KCB Kikuyu Branch at 8am by area legislator Lewis Nguyai and Sikh Union Chairman Manjinder Singh Bansal of the 79 starters, only 29 survived the full course. The 33rd edition attracted foreign interest and

Returning after missing some of the action this year is Ugandan Champion Jas Mangat who has been a thorn in the shoe for many of the local drivers whenever he competes in the championship. Tapio Laukannen the crack Finn driver and former British Champion was an instant hit when he took the opening stage stage prior to exiting in the long 57km stage. Tapio raced on a Subaru N16 contraption sponsored by the Multiple Hauliers. With Tapio, Alastair and Ian Duncan gone, Tundo and his sibling Natasha dominated the leaderboard to the very end. This was Tundo’s third Guru Nanak win. Baldev Chager cruised home second while Jas Mangat came fourth.Onkar Rai and his partner Raju Chagger (Subaru) clocked 1.46.44 hours to settle for fifth while Raji S. fter boosting the organisational set-up of the rally-sport over the past few years, ALS Ltd are back to enhance the safety of all the eight Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) events in the 2013 season through the provision of a safety and evacuation helicopter. The safety chopper will be on standby at designated service park areas at all KNRC events for use in the event of any eventualities. This is a free service for all participants of the rallies and will be available in the KCB Voi Rally in May. The 2013 sponsorship package by ALS is valued at over US$ 10,000 (KSH. 840,000) per rally event. The helicopter is a major boost to organisers just in case of any accidents or medical emergencies experienced by the participants during the event. In a swift response and in absolute coordination with rally organisers during the seasonopening KCB Kajiado Rally last January, ALS were able to pinpoint coordinates of the accident scene where Onkar Rai Subaru N16 went up in flames thus justifying its critical role in the safety of competitors. ALS, based at Wilson Airport, provides customised aviation

solutions such as Aircraft Leasing services, Charter flights, Aircraft safety and maintenance services. ALS has successfully passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and is an IATA member airline. It is a professional aviation company, which has safety at its core therefore making it a well matched key sponsor for the crowd-pulling KNRC events. Should a driver need medical assistance? They are required to inform the clerk of the course, Rally HQs, or an official who will liaise with the doctor on call and helicopter pilot to be with you immediately. ‘’Regarding safety- a key component of this rally, Drivers, Co-Drivers, Navigators, Officials, Clerks of the course- please note that we have an evacuation helicopter provided by ALS Ltd on standby for use in case of any serious medical emergency. Should you need medical assistance please contact the clerk of the course or HQ immediately and we will have the service provided for you” said ALS Managing Director Aslam Khan. Mr. Khan is the reigning Champion of the KCB Classic Car Cup and two times Kenya Motor Sports Personality of the years 1982 and 2011.

MUCHEMI is a man of many hats

wo years after scooping the motor personality-of-the- year award for a brave fight against cancer and the admirable courage of romping back to the bucket seat of his Subaru contraption, Ben Muchemi (a.k.a. Baba Ciru) is at it again. Recently, Muchemi was appointed Chairman of Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) for a duration of three years effective January 2013 and by extension the Event Director of KCB Safari Rally 2013. As if to prove that Muchemi has his hands full, he was also elected the Chairman of Rallye Sports Club (RSC) which indeed elevated him to the Board of Directors’ portfolio at Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF). Last year, Muchemi was bestowed with the MBS (Moran of the Burning Spear)- thanks to former President Mwai Kibaki’s acknowledgement of his “big heart”-a heart of gold- as many would put it. His spirit of sharing, success story in business matters and the uncanny knack of defying cancer to race are some of the factors which have earned him accolades over the years. State Commendations of Kenya are awarded by the President of the Republic Kenya “in recognition of outstanding or distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities”. Awards are made by the President upon the advice of a National Honours and Awards Committee in the President’s Office. Individuals are nominated for awards by district committees, government ministries, religious organisations, non-governmental organisations, individuals and others. Muchemi-who is a KNRC Division 3 rally driver scooped his award in the “The Order of the Burning Spear” category. “It felt great to be honoured by the former head of state,” Muchemi commented. This year Muchemi has participated in rallying in an EVO machine, Rally Raid in his massive Dakar Rally buggy and Autocross in his many rally cars. Last year he led the Autocross series after winning the first two rounds in Nairobi. Apart from the motor personality award, Muchemi was in 2006 bestowed with the John Ngunjiri Memorial Trophy for the most improved rally driver. He was introduced into rallying by his longstanding friend, the late John Ngunjiri who is the brainchild of the Media Rally. Through his Safaricom KRT Rally Academy Muchemi helps many young and talented personalities realise their dreams in rallying. He also runs the Annual KRT Safaricom Media Rally which helps members of the corporate world and personalities from the fourth estate feel the glamorous world of the cockpit in real competition. He is however better known today not for his entrepreneurial spirit but for his participation in motor sports. Muchemi was diagnosed with stomach cancer on February 26, 2008.

ASRA Attributes Success Of Rallying In Kenya

JULY 2013 | ISSUE NO. 89

T

he first-ever motor rally school in Kenya was launched in 2010 to lure the future stars of the Kenya National Rally Championship series. The project, initiated by veteran rally navigator and one of the most respected personalities in the motor sports industry, Abdul Sidi, has one of the biggest following not only it Kenya, but across the African Continent, specifically in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. Over 50 students are already enjoying the sport as competitors in the famous rounds of the Kenya National Rally Championship series. While a further larger number of students are involved as Marshalls and Controllers in the series. The 2012 Safari Rally organizers deployed over 55 students from as marshals in the round of the of the African Rally Championship series.

The Principal said: ‘’The scheme is a historic venture meant to provide free education to those interested in joining Motor Sports industry. I take pride in promoting and developing the sport in Kenya and beyond.’’ Sidi has won many accolades as a rally navigator not only in Kenya, but in countries as far as South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Malaysia among others. He was part of the Safari Rally ‘Works’ Teams that included Nissan, Daihatsu, Mazda and Subaru among other leading Manufacturers. Among his top drivers were Kenyan title holders such as Sarbi Rai, Sammy Aslam, Patrick Njiru, Azar Anwar, Phineas Kimathi, Marco Brighetti, Bimal Shah, Susheel Shah, Peter Hays, Jas Matharu, John Ngunjiri, etc... Seven-times African Champion, Satwant Singh of Zambia and FIA World Group N Champion, Gregoire de Mevius

were among the other stars that put Sidi in the limelight of world rallying. He has tackled over 18 Safari Rallies and finished 15 of them with commendable and sometimes historic results such as guiding Patrick Njiru to the 4th Place and GROUP N TITLE in the 1994 WRC round of the Safari Rally. He is the current Motor Sports Correspondent for the Daily Nation Newspapers. He has worked as Chief Media Officer for the Kenya Motor Sports Federation, Tanzania Rally, Rwanda Rally and the East African Classic Safari Rally among others. Sidi is the former Chairman of the Kenya Rally Drivers Association, the former Chairman of the Rallies Commission of the Kenya Motor Sports Federation and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 60th edition of the World famous Safari Rally when it was held in 2012.

Mitraros rules as Rwanda Mountain Guerilla Rally organisers impress

K

CB Rwanda Mountain Guerilla Rally 2012 lived up to its billing as one of the best run events in the FIA African Rally Championship series calendar-thanks to the dedicated Team of young organisers comprising Christian Gakwaya and Salim Abdulgani Fabrice. As a matter of fact, the team wasn’t only spot-on in executing it’s duties, but surpassed the expectations of many what with the quality they displayed in the weekend setting. This particular edition will perhaps go down in the folklore as one of the most suc-

cessful events. It treated spectators to some exhilarating displays. It was encouraging to see picturesque “fast and furious” stages running up and down the mountains. With Zambian Mohamed Essa and his Zim partner Greg Stead sealing ARC championship in Rally Tanzania, only 17 cars entered the Kigali based tour. Spectator fervour was incredible. The super special alone attracted some 6000 spectators. There was no littering reported and most importantly no alcohol consumption at the super special witnessed-kudos to spectators

for setting a good precedent. Action-wise, the rally was full of drama. Giancarlo Davite and Sylvia Vindevogel crashed out with a sheared ball joint while leading on SS2. Fristakis Fitidis wasn’t lucky either as he rolled his Subaru in one of the tricky sections. Elefter Mitraros and his partner Paolo Paganin in a Subaru Impreza was the winner with a cumulative time of 3.55.14hours followed by Olivier Costa and Didier. Duguese in a similar make on 4.08.80 hours.

T

he Two Wheel Drive class witnessed major firsts in the 2012 season; from the emergence of new machines, newcomers, increased spectator and competitor fervor and above all, a new champion being ushered in for the first time in a Subaru Contraption. Mombasa based Nadeem Kana and his co-driver James Mwangi savored their career maiden F2 titles despite Dennis Mwenda’s belated ascendancy. Nadeem and Mwangi became the first ever crews from Mombasa County to lay their hands on the coveted 2WD diadem. Adnan Suhail was spot on in 2012 having won the KCB Safari Rally in bravado. Suhail however gave the season a wide berth citing lack of sponsorship. In the 2012 season, Adnan achieved 19 rally finishes in 2WD class, 5 class wins outright including Safari 2012, and another 8 podiums to boot. But Mwenda’s Toyota Sprinter GT was undeniably the talk of town in the last three rallies. In fact, its the “Sprinter” which incidentally compelled the 2WD ‘competing fraternity’ to reconsider upgrades in the preceding 2013 season including Nadeem who announced in Eldoret that he will not be defending his 2WD Championship title to pave way for major repairs on his Subaru. Nadeem claimed impressive scalps in Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu rallies and had this to say after becoming the first ever Coast crew to win the 2WD Championship in Eldoret: “It’s a happy moment for us. We had a radiator leak

on CS3 and broke two rear top mountings. Dennis is really fast so we might take a break and concentrate on rebuilding our car next season.” Nadeem’s 405points tally was enough to hand him the coveted title which was won by James Kirimi last season. Kirimi had to contend with mechanical problems including gearbox gremlins which locked him out of Eldoret tour. Like Kirimi, Two times Champion Leonardo Varese had to also contend with mechanical jinx despite winning the season opening RSC/Nyeri Rally. Mwenda won Nanyuki and Eldoret Rallies serving up great moments ahead for F2 lovers. His Nanyuki Rally victory turned out to be satisfactory given that it was his first outing in the Imran Mogul-built Toyota Sprinter. Nanyuki rally brought to the fore some interesting statistics. This was literally Dennis’ 7th rally finish in 2WD and first class win to go along with 4 podiums. For Leonardo, Nanyuki was his 30th rally finish in 2WD and a 10th career podium in the process to go along with 8 class wins. Niaz Bashir from Kisumu finished 2nd in 2WD in Eldoret and proved a hard nut to crack whenever he had a good run. Mwenda was all smiles: “We have proved that Nanyuki was no fluke. My co-driver Edward (Njoroge) has been on point through out the season and didn’t not miss a note last season,” said Mwenda. The two Toyota Vitz cars of Victor Okundi and Sammy

Niaz and Kosgey have been racing their Toyota contraption on standard shocks for the whole of the 2011 and 2012 seasons and have been achieving podium positions. “I must truly pay tribute to (James) Kirimi, Thethy and Leo who really make the 2WD to be competitive.New kids on the block are threatening to give them a run for there money- I am referring to the likes of Niaz, Naveed, Nadeem, Kibara and the Vitz,” offered Kosgey. Nyorri heralded what developned into some good- humored banter, this being the first time in history that the “baby” Vitzs competed locally. Newcomers were Caroline Gatimu who borrowed Mwenda’s Golf and competed in Nanyuki and Eldoret. Jeff Mburu, son of Peter Mburu, also crowned his first finish ever rally finish with 4th overall in Eldoret. Phyllis Wambui became the first lady 2WD driver to score points in 2012. Wambui Kairu made her debut in Eldoret when she navigated Sammy Nyorri. Mwenda had become formidable and climbed over the ranks magnificently like Niaz Bashir

he 2012 National Cross Country Rally Raid season came to a dramatic conclusion with new Champions savoring their Championship feats during the Rift Valley Motor & Sports Club (RVM&SC) round staged at a serene location around Kedong Ranch. It was a dream come true for Sean Wilcock who was crowned the new motorcycle champion taking over the coveted diadem from Shivam Vinayak after years of trying. Nish Lakhani and Teeku Patel in their “Kenya Cat” contraption retained the car class title for the third year running and so was “battlehardened” Shazar Anwar who won his fifth

crown in the competitive Quad Bike class. “It was a very good season with varied routes and well organized rallies. I’m very chuffed to have won the championship for the third time! Many thanks to my navigator, my sponsor Suntrek Safaris and Simon Sharpe

Services,” said Nish. A new teenage Champion Tejas Hirani was finally ascertained in the buggies class despite finishing third overall in his class. The quads title was last year won by Ian Duncan who has since participated in the car, bike and buggy

classes this season. Tejas’ navigator and A.S.R.A. protege Riyaz Ismail was also crowned the champion in the Class. Riyaz made his Rally Raid debut this year in Masinga navigating Tejas. The duo won the Masinga meeting, the Shimba Hills MMC tour and finished third in the Kedong Raid to clinch the 2012 Championship in bravado! Ian Duncan won the buggy class followed by Mikey Hughes as Tejas completed the podium dash on his twin seater “Magi-Bug”. Other entrants in the buggy class were Chris Outrum and Coast-based Alex Gibbs who drove his “Gremlin Buggy”. “It was a wet raid on the first day. It rained loads in parts of the section. It was also tough for me as a navigator as the notes got wet at some point and kept tearing. But we managed to finish. RVM&SC and Geoff (Mayes) put up an awesome route,” Riyaz said of the magnificent season’s run on their two-seater Magi-Bug, which is a new road legal buggy which made way into the Kenyan market this year. Shazar was all smiles: “It has been a challenging Championship this year. Competition has been tough with many quad riders being on top of the game. I’m glad to have managed to win this year again for the fifth year running and thanks to my sponsors JCB Ganatra and the support of my wife n family.” Over 40 participants endured two days of racing and about 200 kilometres of varied terrain which treated spectators to some exhilarating displays of off-road racing artistry. Shaun Miller was indeed the star attraction in the bikes class after victory. But he had to contend with playing second fiddle to Wilcock, whose third overall finish in Kedong was enough to enable him claim the 2012 Championship. Adin Haq in his Kenyan built “Bowler” won the car class with Eddie Belcher wrapping up his run in second position driving a Tomcat. The 2013 Raiid has traversed several picturesque locations across the country including the Masinga Dam, Kedong, Ol Doiny Lemboro near Nanyuki and for the first time ever in Kwale County.

EAMSC fetes 2012 achievers as Shivam hints at hanging helmet

T

he 2012 Kenya Motor Personality of the year, Shivam Vinayak, fast-rising Tutu Maina and regional MX125 motocross Champion Apollo Mbuki were among the star attractions during the East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC) 2012 Awards Ceremony. The Club, which organises Enduro and Motocross events in the KMSF Motorsport Calendar, feted its 2012 podium achievers soon after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) which took place at Pampas Churascoss in Lavington Nairobi. During the function, top riders announced their plans for the season which started off in mid-January at Jamhuri Park. Tutu, the outgoing 50cc champion, announced major plans to upgrade from the current underpowered KTM 125cc bike to a Kawasaki 250cc contraption in his bid to challenge Shivam Vinayak in the MX1 class. Tutu thanked God and his family for two good seasons which he rode vigorously minus any injuries. Shivam has won the Richard Njoba MX1 trophy for the third year running and anticipates a repeat performance this season. During the awards ceremony, Shivam hinted that he intends to hang up his helmet in two years time to concentrate on his dentistry career. “After winning the Motorsports Personality of the year award earlier in the year, I believe there is nothing more I can achieve on two wheels. I don’t know how many years I will be riding, but this year and next year I am keen on helping Kenya dominate the regional FIM title and leave a legacy for youngsters to follow. In life, there is a lot more to do other than just riding- and I hope to follow in the footsteps of my father to be a leading dentist in the country,” said Shivam. Shivam and Apollo were feted by EAMSC for winning the FIM CAC Motocross titles. Also acknowledged was the Kenya MX125 class trio of Apollo Mbuki, Rohan Gandhi and Masalule Kituyi for the emphatic 1-2-3 clean sweep during the FIM Africa continental Motocross Championship in Kampala last year. Shivam collected four titles -the MX1 National title, FIM Africa Championship title, Open Class and 125cc Enduro titles. EAMSC Chairman congratulated all winners and thanked members for their dedicated effort in the 2012 season. He urge more volunteers to come forward and assist in organisational activities during race meetings.

egacy...according to the Webster Dictionary, means “a gift received from or passed down by an ancestor or predecessor from the past.” A wealth of racing knowledge, a gift shall we say, has truly been passed down through racing generations in Kenya. Most notable are the Tundo family, who have been a part and parcel of the Kenya National Rally Championship and most importantly organisation of the Nakuru Rally since the time fast and furious high-tech contraptions made their way into the sport. Carl and his sister Tasha simply grew up with the sport, etching the Tundo name into racing’s history books in the process during last year’s Guru Nanak Rally when they became the first sister- and- brother crew to win a round of the KNRC. The Tundo name also has many race fans reflecting on the olden days of the Safari when Tundo senior (Frank) earned himself a name for his uncanny knack in the cockpit-so ingrained has been his love for the “man and machine” affair. In fact, Frank, the clerk of the course for Nakuru Rally, may claim bragging rights for having seen rally technology morph through different guises. Mombasa based Horseys- Alex and Peter -have been notable in as far as speed and grace are concerned. In fact, its their father David who was the last Kenyan to lay his hands on the coveted FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) title

in the 80s. Alex and Peter honed their skills in a Toyota Corolla swapping seats between themselves in their father’s Corolla. Today they drive separately and are indeed the only siblings currently driving in KNRC Division 1 ranks. The history of racing in Kenya could hardly be complete minus a mention of the Anwars-Shazar, Azar and Asad. Azar, 58, is one of the oldest competitors in the KNRC today having kicked off his career in racing some three and a half decades back. He has three KNRCs titles and a similar number of Group N titles under his belt following rare doubles in 1998, 2005 and 2006. Asad, his younger brother is on sabbatical at the moment but has been nicknamed “master of spectator stages” for his gutsy drive on race circuits. Azar’s son Shazar is incidentally the five times consecutive quad class champion in Rally Raid series (formerly Cross Country Rally). Shazar has indeed whipped-up the enthusiasm of many other riders to embrace quad racing by nurturing and servicing their machines. The Khans have been there for as long as we can remember. Aslam Khan is a two times motor personality of the years 1982 and 2011 >>

KENYA’S SMALLEST RALLY CAR (QUATULU) Victor Okundi finally recovered after Guru Nanak. The rough and tough terrain explained it all. Okundi, who became the first Kenyan to race a Toyota Vitz thanked God for a fantastic rally season.Six out of 8 finishes wasn’t that bad and he is looking forward to a more competitive next season with Sammy Nyorri who drove the other Vitz. Okundi achieved this after rolling his “tiny” Vitz thrice.

Natasha Tundo

Did You Know… Natasha became the first lady navigator since Sylvia King in 1984 to win a rally. Her partnership with his brother Carl went down in history books as the first brother and sister crew to win a rally on Kenya soil. Sardar Joginder Singh Bhachu (born February 9, 1932 in Kericho, Kenya) was a successful endurance rally driver in the 1960s and 1970s?. He won the Safari Rally three times, in 1965 driving a Volvo PV544 with his brother Jaswant as co-driver, and in 1974 and 1976 driving a Mitsubishi Colt Lancer 1600 GSR.[1] The first Sikh driver ever to win an international rally, and also the first man to win the

Safari Rally three times, he was fondly known as the “Flying Sikh” for his exploits behind the wheel. Although Ugandan rival the Late Shekhar Mehta has more outright victories in the event, Singh’s record of 19 finishes in 22 attempts is an unprecedented feat of consistency in what has been long regarded as the world’s toughest rally, where the attrition rate can exceed 90%. He was even one of the so-called “Unsinkable Seven” – the only crews in the 1968 event who were able to reach the finish at Nairobi when the rest of the entire field of 74 were stranded on the Mau Escarpment along the western rim of the Great Rift Valley.

s the dust finally settled on the floor of the great Rift Valley- on the auspicious occasion of the Guru Nanak Rally-it was indeed fascinating to note that it was only a matter of time before gutsy youngsters took over the reins from daredevil speedsters of the KNRC. A total of 59 Competitive Stages were run by various organizing clubs across the country. STAGES CANCELLED The total number of stages cancelled were few and far between and as follows:Nyeri one, when leading cars found no controllers on site, Nanyuki two stages, when heavens opened, Eldoret one stage owing to contested traffic on the long CS1 and Safari one due to flash floods. Fascinating was the fact that the year 2012 enjoyed an average of 50-plus entries which was by far the biggest in the African continent. Nyeri for instance, drew together 49 starters and 34 finishers which wasn’t a bad start. Kisumu had 53 starters and 37 finishers, Safari 77 against 44. Guru Nanak once again lived up to its billing as one of the most popular but toughest KNRC events what with a bum-

Carl Tundo per 79 starters and a paltry 17 survivors. YOUNG TURKS The year 2012 was indeed one to remember for many aspects. Although young Turks could still not sit around the same dinning table with speed merchants- Alastair Cavenagh, Ian Duncan, Carl “Flash” Tundo and Baldev Singh Chager, their act attested the fact that they must have surely graduated eating from the crumbs-if what was witnessed in the eight-leg series was anything to go by. . Pace was, for a fact, dictated by Division

Alastair Cavenagh 1 speedsters, and the faster they attacked the gravel, the better it was for their supporters. Horsey brothers Peter and Alex once again displayed occasion flashes of brilliance swapping their crowd-pulling “Moto Moto” Datsun pickup and EVOX cars on sundry occasions. Horseys were no doubt the fastest duo amongst the young Turks. Manvir Baryan, OnkarRai and Jassi S. Chatthe gave a good account of themselves and powered through the stages with the requisite grace and aggression-so were the likes of Tejvir Rai and Far-

Azar Anwar haaz Khan aka “Fazy” who surprised all and sundry by returning the ex-Phineas Kimathi Subaru N10 third fastest on CS5 of the Guru Nanak. A LONG JOURNEY All in all, it was such a long journey which started off in the teeming streets of Nyeri with the RSC Rally and culminated in the volcanic ash soil setup of Kedong and Suswa which went down as the roughest and toughest man and machine battle in recent years. Tundo and Alastair drove like men possessed each racking-up the most first fastest stages times. Tundo chalked up 20 first fastest time two clear of Cavenagh while Duncan could only manage 9 fastest Chager had it 5 whilst Azar managed only one first fastest in Guru Nanak . Who could actually forget how Peter Horsey and Bella Erskine romped home second overall in Mombasa behind Cavenagh and took first, second and third fastest times on their home event? Jazzy Chana had one first fastest in Nyeri and managed one third fastest in

Kisumu on his Celica GT4. Raaji Bharij and Geoff Mayes surprised all and sundry in Nanyuki when they clinched the Kanyoni spectator stage Cs1 of Nanyuki and went to bed with an unfamiliar but unforgettable overnight lead before gremlins set in on day 2. Kisumu had a number of surprises but wasn’t a good hunting ground for teammatesTundo and Alastair. Cavenagh was indeed the pacesetter in Kisumu with local Jassi Chatthe taking second fastest on CS1 and Nakuru’s Fahd Bary clinching CS3. Chager exploded with three successive fastest times on CS4, CS5 and CS6. Tapio Laukkanen was one man who sent shivers down the spines KNRC frontrunners when h e clinched the first stage in Guru Nanak in a Multiple Hauliers N16. Tapio then kissed the event goodbye in the second stage. In Kisumu, Cavenagh nonetheless went on to post fastest time on the first stage beating his teammate Tundo by a mere one second -demonstrating yet again how intense the battle between these 2 former champions has become. Carl hit the same jump and landed on the nose of the car damaging the radiator and leading to his retirement 2 stages later.
