45 YEARS OF AUTOMOBILE SPORT IN RWANDA

T

he first Rally in Rwanda was held in 1967. The initiative to organised the maiden event came to fruition courtesy of Mr. Faarup and Vandijk in collaboration with the Round Table. In 1984, during the General Assembly gathered in Paris, the “Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile” pronounced the affiliation of Automobile Motor Club of Rwanda (A.M.C.R) to the F.I.A family. In 1985, the team of Luc Requile & Luc Verhulst won the first title of the African Rally Championship event in Rwanda. It was then decided during an extraordinary General Assembly of January 9th, 1987 that Club Statutes be modified to suit the changing times and the Club was renamed « Rwanda Automobile Club » in short « R.A.C ». In 2002, still under the patronage His Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Mr. Paul Kagame, the Fraternity Rally was renamed “Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally” which then counted towards the 5th event in the FIA African Rally Championship 2003. A total of 25 cars started this historic Rally. Over the years, the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally has grown in leaps and bounds. Other than Rwandese teams, several foreign teams from Belgium, South Africa, Zambia, Kenya and Burundi have participated in the Rally. The South African team of Gemmel Paisley with their Subaru Impreza have also won the Gorilla Rally. The 2009 edition will perhaps go down in the folklore as the most significant of them all. It took place from18th to 20th September. The RAC was then a candidate in the ARC series. The same event served as the final shootout of the Pirelli Star Driver (PSD) and the KCB East Africa Rally Challenge (KCB EARC). Anwar Sidi Rally Bulletin Issue 99

Locals Giancarlo Davite and Syllivia Vindevogel displayed awesome driving skills to win the KCB Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally and indeed, the KCB EARC with Kenyan youngster Peter Horsey racking up the PSD to enable him participate in six Europe based World Rally Championship rallies. The same year, Davite also clinched the Rwanda National Rally Championship 2009 whist Guy Dekelver won the same for the navigators’ title. The 2010 edition attracted a record 38 entries including classic cars from Kenya as well as other competitors from Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda who had the privilege of traversing the scenic eastern region of Rwanda. Rudy Cantanhede and David Israel emerged the winners with Giancarlo and Sylvia winning the KCB East African Challenge for the second year running. The 2011/2012/2013 and 2014 editions also contributed significantly towards the history of the ARC series- thanks to a new team of young turks who have continued burning the midnight oil in trying to make the difference to the rally-sport in the Country. Standards have been set and only the sky’s the limit. The RMGR 2015 is here with us again!

GIANCARLO DAVITE

n behalf of Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (F.I.A), I am honored to welcome you to the 5th round of the 2015 African Rally Championship. The championship comes to Rwanda after being to Ivory Coast, South Africa, Zambia, and Tanzania. This event is called Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally to celebrate the hosting country, being the home of more than half of the existing silver back gorillas worldwide. The two days event, from 31st July to 1st August, is expected to be one of its kind since we are hosting teams from the south such as Zambia meeting teams from East African; Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The event will cover 450 Km of which 236 will be for competition and 213 for road section. The rally will tour the city of Kigali and part of the Eastern province. The landscape of the routes has changed from hilly-twisty to flat-fast and twisty, our team has made sure that a combination of styles in routes is set, which will require all drivers to perform with high endurance and responsiveness. The caliber of registered cars guarantees a good show for fans and second to second time difference challenge to drivers. Motorsport in Rwanda is contributing to the country’s vision of becoming a regional hub and preferred destination, we are among the 7 countries in Africa that host the African Rally Championship events; for this year we are expecting a big number of visitors from neighboring countries to join the increasing number of local fanatics. This breathtaking event filled with joy and camaraderie around motorsport has united many people and created a valuable spirit of companionship, we wish our fans to enjoy and remember that they play a big role for the smoothness of the event. . The success of this event is a result of hard work from a passionate team to whom I extend my gratitude, I thank the government of Rwanda for the vital support via the Ministry of Sports and Culture, we thank our sponsors and partners for coming onboard and we ensure you that by associating your brands to this event, you are generating systematic customer preference and mostly from high valuable customers. I also thank the local population, led by the District authorities around the rally routes, you have been very helpful during the preparations of the event and we look forward to your attendance to watch and celebrate this event with us. I finally take this opportunity to thank Federation International de l’Automobile for the continuous support that we have received for the past two years. We are very happy to host officials from FIA who will be here to assess our standards and guide us throughout the event. This year we are joining the FIA family to campaign for road safety, we encourage everyone to take a step and contribute to the Decade of Action for road safety. I welcome you again to Rwanda, a country of a thousand hills, Enjoy the rally and may the best win, God bless, Christian Gakwaya

J

assi Chatthe of Kenya hopes to maintain his dogged campaign in search of a maiden African Rally Championship (ARC) title when Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally 2015 gets underway on the weekend of July 30th-2nd August. Should the Kisumu based speed merchant lay his hands on the coveted ARC title this year, he will become the first Kenyan to achieve the feat since Mombasa based David Horsey did it in 1984. What’s more, Chatthe will savour first outing in Rwanda after skipping last year’s edition due to family commitments. Having already taken some impressive scalps, Chatthe will also be hoping to make up for his DNF on the Oryx Energies Rally in Tanzania where he rolled his Evolution 10 while leading the pack. Rudy Contanhede and Valery Bukera head the list of Burundians thirsty for the Gorilla success. Ugandans will be going for the jugular and will be represented by John Consta, Christakis Fitidis and Andrew Desh Kananura among others. This will be Kananura first rally outside Uganda. Tanzania’s Naser Yasin will be co-driven by Mukuye Hussein of Uganda in a Subaru Impreza. Rwanda will field their usual suspects in

Giancarlo Davite (EvoX), Elifter Mitraros, Gakwaya Claude while Zambia has 2013 ARC Champion Jassy Singh being navigated by the legendary Dace Sihoka. Davide is the notable absentee in this year’s ARC. The 2015 ARC has so far been to Ivory Coast, South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. Tanzania’s Gerard Miller (who is not registered for ARC points) won the 2015 Tanzania Rally but Chatthe maintained the ARC lead despite crashing out of the rally after a big “off”. Chatthe navigated by UK Champion navigator Craig Thorley won Zambia International Motor Rally ahead of his namesake Jassy Singh. Having taken the lead on SS3 on penultimate day, Chatthe never looked back and won the event by 4 minute 14 second margin from Jassy who was navigated by Sajid Khan in a Subaru Impreza N16. Third overall was also Zambian Mohamed Essa and Kenya based Zim co-driver Gareth Dawe. Chatthe finished 6th in the 2015 Sasol Rally to win the ARC category. Mark Cronje navigated by Robin Houghton in a Ford Performance South Africa Fiesta S2000 clocked 2:26:12.2hours to win the Sasol Rally 2015. Defending champion Gary Chaynes navigat-

ed by David Israel in a Mitsubishi Evo9 clocked 1:57:28.9 hours to win the season opening Rallye Bandama. Chaynes has not competed on the continental front from then on. Meanwhile, the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally will take place on the weekend of 28 - 30 August 2015 with Madagascar International Rally wrapping up the season on 06-08 November 2015.
