The ‘What If Beaufort Street’ folio was the product of the Masters’ studio design unit. It endeavored to improve and revitalise Beaufort Street as it faces issues such as commercial and retail inhibited growth and competition from nearby high streets. This folio proposes a design strategy that ‘meander’s’ the street’s orientation to create pockets of space for various design opportunities, calm vehicular traffic speeds, and promote pedestrian exploration. This design strategy also responds to users and business owners need of a better urban experience by replacing box canopies with natural shade and introduction of ‘incidental’ playspaces.

The Matilday Bay Masterplan is a folio proposal that aims to transition this iconic site to the future in the context of Perth’s urban and academic setting. This masterplan proposes to integrate its equally significant neighbor, the University of Western Australia, more specifically, Reid Library as the foreshore’s setting is an ideal environment for learning. Another aspect to the masterplan is the continuation and bridging of native vegetation to form an ecological corridor from the southern river foreshore to Kings Park to the north. This connects Pelican Point to the biodiversity reserve that Kings Park offers. As a parallel objective, the ecological and amenity design choices combine to form an urban park that enhances the site’s rich story and makes it available to all visitors.

green corridor

restoring connections & reaching for the coast Lake Joondalup’s green restoration and continuation will require modification through the urban spaces of the city. Collier Pass street interface with the large shopping centre will need to be planted thorougly with native vegetation. Its narrow profile was a challenge rationalize as the verge had constant interruptions and openings for vehicular access. Fortunately, there were a few spaces that allow planting such as the swale planting near Joondalup Drive. This proposal then continues to link up to Elcar park through the underpass which has a lightwell located in the median. This should serve well for proposed planting as well as connectivity through the major road. Elcar Park is also redesigned to integrate more native planting rather than turf areas. Its existing trees will be retained as they are well established and add a lot of shade. This park is sited between a facing structures that are zoned to be part of the city centre and should be well utilized in the future.

green bridge The proposed bridge will allow native pollinators to have access across Mitchell Freeway. Native vegetation will have an uninterrupted genetic diversity and promote population health. This bridge also functions to serve pedestrians and cyclists access to and fro the cycling network of the Freeway.This will also allow Joondalup’s city centre to be accessible from the suburb of Connolly thus potentially enabling increased activation for retail and commercial in the area. The bridge also allows a connection to Mitchell Freeway’s verge planting, which is relatively an unbroken NorthSouth ecological corridor.
