Introduction
RED972_Nat-Slate Guide 16-03-07
As with all products in the Redland range, the Redland Del Carmen and Redland Riverstone slates are complemented by a full range of roofing fittings and accessories. Both slates are covered by our unique Redland 15 Year Roof System Guarantee when fitted in conjunction with Redland fittings and accessories.
SSQ Group Redland Del Carmen and Redland Riverstone are sold by Redland through a partnership agreement with slate specialists SSQ Group. SSQ was first established in 1983 as a pioneer importer of Spanish Slate to the UK. Since then, SSQ has grown to become one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of natural slate roofing and architectural products.
SSQ is one of the top suppliers in Europe and is dedicated to supplying only proven quality slates. SSQ operates in close cooperation with all its partner quarries to maintain a steady, reliable supply of the highest quality slate. This strong presence at source is what gives SSQ the leading edge as a supplier of natural slate.
Riverstone and Del Carmen are registered trademarks of SSQ Holdings Limited.
SSQ’s strong presence at source enables stringent quality control procedures at every stage of the process from extraction through to delivery. SSQ’s partner quarry in north-western Spain produces the high quality Del Carmen slate and SSQ are partners in the San Luis Slate quarry in Argentina, which produces Riverstone.

British Standards and CE Marking If a company wishes to manufacture, import or sell a product within the EU, and this product falls within the scope of one or more of the “Construction Products Directives”, then the product must carry a CE mark. BS EN 12326-1:2004 is the harmonised EU standard relevant to Natural Roofing Slate. All slates irrespective of their origin should be tested to the criteria laid down in this standard and thus have a set of test results and must carry the CE mark. UK Building Regulations have been modified to ensure that only CE marked products are used in
cases where a directive exists. Local Authority Building Control departments enforce these regulations. Purchasers and installers of Natural Roofing Slate can check whether the slates have been tested to BS EN 12326 by looking for the CE marking on any labels on the packaging and or any documentation accompanying the slates, such as delivery notes, advice notes or invoices.

RED972_Nat-Slate Guide 16-03-07
BS EN 12326 does not indicate the quality of a slate just a standardised and harmonised method of testing.
Quality Checklist The test results themselves (printed on the pallet label) are the key to judging the quality of a slate and, as you would expect from Lafarge, both Redland Del Carmen and Redland Riverstone are characterised by high performance properties. Both slates are classified as “Ultra”, which is the top grade from each quarry. Del Carmen Riverstone Flexural Strength > 64Mpa

This slate is quarried in the Cabrera Mountains in north-western Spain from uninterrupted seams of high quality slate, using a combination of the latest extraction technology and age-old practices such as splitting slates by hand. Del Carmen comes in a choice of two thicknesses and in a variety of sizes to suit most traditional slate requirements.

Ultra Riverstone® Riverstone has a distinctive grey/green colour and a dressed edge finish. The colouring is completely natural and will not fade, even when exposed to the harshest environments. Riverstone is mined from the long-established San Luis quarry in central Argentina’s La Florida region using the latest extraction techniques. Equally suitable for the refurbishment of old buildings or new build projects; its grey/green colour makes Riverstone an ideal replacement for the indigenous slate of the South West and Wales.
