F

or the last two years, we've all been challenged by COVID and its aftermath: resulting shut downs, job losses, variants, added tension of safety protocols, home schooling, quarantines, product shortages, and much, much more. On top of that, other US and world events and issues exacerbate the damage to our already frayed physical, mental, and spiritual health. If you're struggling with overwhelm, anxiety, depression—or just exhausted from the stress of life—we can help you. If you've gone off-track, lost sight of what is important to your well-being, or have decided to explore new ways of self-care and relaxation—we can guide you. The AOLRC retreat experience is far more than a vacation. Our immersive experiences ignite personal transformation. In this nurturing, healing environment, surrounded by a likeminded, nonjudgmental community, you’re free to practice new tools and techniques, discover new perspectives, learn new ways of being—we welcome you. You’ll be nourished inside and out with delicious and nutritious meals, invigorating all-levels yoga, guided meditation, nature, and Ayurvedic body treatments. Take a break from everyday life and return home deeply rested, reinvigorated, and enriched. You’ll continue to experience the benefits long after you leave. ■ 800-392-6870 4aolrc.org | 9

Why go on a retreat? A mindful walk through the woods, sitting on the rocks by a flowing stream, breathing in pure air, immersed in the sounds of natural elements and wildlife—these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reasons to go on a retreat. For most of us, life today is more demanding and stressful than ever. We must be competitive at work (which usually involves working too much), take care of family and finances, and keep relationships thriving. In the bargain, sleep, health, and your mental well-being are often compromised—with sometimes dramatic negative consequences. And so, more and more people are looking up for holistic wellness retreats that educate, rejuvenate, and nourish the soul and mind as well as the body. A retreat is not just about crunching as much as you can into your weekend, overindulging in food and drink, and exhausting your body and mind on shopping, nightlife, and tourist attractions. It's about withdrawing from the stressors of everyday life and going inward. What makes a wellness retreat? The best retreat is where you recharge your spiritual, physical, and mental batteries with nourishing food, relaxing bodywork, and restorative yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. You not only engage the physical body, but get creative for the mind in educational classes and workshops to learn about cooking, pottery, or Ayurveda and immerse your senses in the natural world. According to a research, the benefits of wellness retreats on the health of retreat goers are significant and last longer when compared to regular vacations. Study participants experienced less stress, reduced blood pressure, decreased anxiety, self-compassion, weight loss, and more gratitude.

54

Reconnect to the Deepest Part of You An important way a retreat differs from any other type of vacation is how it integrates practices that allow you to slow down against the breathless pace of life. Meditation, nature walks, labyrinth meditation, learning breath-focused practices—they all bring qualitative depth to your retreat experience, particularly so if you are checking in for a meditation retreat. Our retreats are designed to create a touchstone of feeling whole and good—and a new perspective. The reflective meditations, interactive processes, emotional cleanses, Ayurveda-inspired wellness treatments, nourishing food, and natural surroundings allow you to reconnect meaningfully while taking time out for self-care. Book your next "vacation" with us and discover a retreat you'll be talking about—and feel the benefits of—long after you leave. You'll sleep better, feel more balanced and energized, and perhaps find more creativity or confidence.

Cultivating Hope in Difficult Times

Avoiding Compassion Burnout

John Pavlovitz

To be compassionate is to bleed; to feel deeply for the damage around you and to be moved to respond to it. This is a beautiful and invaluable instinct, but it is also costly. In days when so much need is at our doorsteps and on our news feeds, how do we attend to it all without becoming overwhelmed and consumed? How can we cultivate hope when it is hard to come by? Join John Pavlovitz for this workshop of authentic conversation that will provide you with tools and techniques to help you stay focused and positive, and replenish your well of hope during this challenging time. These programs are open to all, but may be of particular interest to those working in caring professions; including activists, ministers, parents, caregivers, and deep feelers.

“John's program was everything I expected and more. He

was an excellent facilitator and engaging speaker. —Dottie

Build a Customized Plan that Works for You

Jeff Warren

Unwind for this gleeful exploratory romp into the mysterious heart of meditation, with Jeff Warren, meditation instructor and awardwinning co-author of the best-selling Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. On this retreat, we will explore the common language that is the foundation for all practices. Underneath the external form of a practice—whether playing music, or noticing the breath, or moving the body in martial arts—deep life skills are being trained. Understanding these skills is central to building your own practice, to being your own life teacher, and to sharing practice with others. Nurtured by breathtaking views, this retreat is suitable for total beginners to more experienced practitioners. Three days of sitting and discussion, with some movement and nature excursions to keep the energy moving and the body limber. Excitement will be had, as well as peaceful sighing and a great many terrible jokes.
