The third floor is for artist residencies, which provides several weeks of stay for artists. Standing at the railing, artists can see people moving into the space and drawn to their artwork. The bedrooms are enclosed to provide privacy while the openings on the north and south facade ensure there is adequate sunlight entering the space.

The main gallery is located on the second floor, where people can appreciate art from different artists. In this space, people can look out to the curtain window to see the Junction City street view. The atrium is ready for sculptors to display their work, so that the audience can experience the space mixed with art and reality. The studio at the east end is isolated from the chaos.

6

On the west side is the entry level of the art gallery, where people could hang out at the window bar, the dining area, or the bar next to the elevator. At this level, people are able to have a glance at the gallery and experience diagonal vertical space created by the different floor shapes.

The bar on the first floor provide drinks and serves as the kitchen base. People can get light food from the kitchen. The loading dock is on the east side of the building, which is close to the elevator. Some permanent art works are painted/hung on the wall. When there is not an exhibition on the second floor, art can also be found inside the building.

BAR AT 1ST FLOOR

While walking in the gallery on second floor, audiences can also experience the city view through the open north facade. Spotlights are installed on the second floor as a supplemental light source to illuminate the space when needed. The display boards are on wheels and can be moved around to rearrange as the artist’s preference.

Cottonwood falls is a quiet and traditional town. Most houses in town are cube shaped. The brewery house follows this tradition, but it has some differences on the inside. Composite fiber-reinforced concrete cladding is used on the building exterior wall to form a skin for the building and makes it look like a cube. A skylight brings natural light into the building. The brewery process, public house and private drinking rooms are located in three individual cubes inside the building. The cubes help define the usage of each space.

Public occupied spaces are designed to be opened to the exterior. Curtain walls on the east faรงade allow people to experience the beauty of Cottonwood Falls and have a street view while dining. Openings on the west faรงade will help bring nature light into private spaces, and also ventilation for the brewery space.

Volland Residency

volland residency

fifth year, 3 week project

21

In the early 20th century, Volland was one of the important train stops in Kansas, that provided necessities to passing trains and trainmen. The existing was built back then for a family whose livelihood depended upon the train. Nowadays, with the development of technology, Volland no longer serves as a train stop, and the family sold their house to the Volland Store owner. When we first went to visit the site, we were inspired by the beauty of the historical house and the unique experience of seeing the train pass by. Therefore, for this proposal, our team decided to keep the exterior of the historical house and turn the interior into a generous studio space. Living spaces and utilities are placed inside the new structure and connects with the old house by a concrete platform.

Based on our observation and research, we found that the north and west side have the best views to the prairie; the east side is closest to the old K-10 which is the main approach to the house, and the morning sunlight will come in from this side to the studio; the south side has a stronger connection with the other historical houses on site and the Volland Store, but it is also exposed to the strong southern light. Thus, public spaces, like kitchen dining, and living room, are on the south side of the house to enhance the connection with the future Volland community; the living and sleeping space are placed on the west side of the new structure so that people can enjoy the sunset and prairie view; utility in the studio is used as the partition to block the southern light, and the utilities in the new house are located close to the studio on the east side so that both houses can benefit.

26

The historical house is intentionally redesigned with no walls attached to the four facades. In this way, artists can fully appreciate and be inspired by the vintage house.

Exploring brick stacking strategies While the Design+Make studio designed the house, we also tried to use brick in our design as the material is now symbolic of Volland, with its iconic brick store. Below are some proposals I did with my teammates.

seating + sculpture

fifth year, 3 week project

33 The competition invited KSU architecture and interior design students to design a seating sculpture that would be installed near the main south entrance of the Regnier Hall, at the reception area. Our design approach was to create a sculpture that spoke about the transition from the old part of Seaton Hall to the newly renovated Regnier Hall. By extracting and integrating Regnier Hall’s wooden screening into the new seating the sculpture appears to seep out of the walls and floors of Regnier, towards Old Seaton. Our design utilities the same dimensions of the wooden vertical screens that can be seen in the reception and corridors throughout Regnier Hall. The undulating and melding forms, as well as an added pop of color on the inner side of the panels, bring the sculpture to life. The design has multiple functions, with built in electrical outlets, microwave, and a small storage closet. This can be seen in the diagrams opposite.
