Past, Present, Future

A

s the New Year begins, I want to encourage everyone to become active with your association. The contributions of the past boards and committee members have provided the security we enjoy today.

ALCA has been the voice for landscape professionals in Arizona since 1963. Over the years Matthew Johnson there have been so many industry leaders that 2012 ALCA President have contributed to the success of the organization through serving on the board, committees, or volunteering at many of the events. Very few associations have such a strong foundation to support all of the different activities that ALCA operates. While you may or may not hear it, Judy Gausman, CEO of ALCA, has been that special ingredient that somehow takes all of these diverse and strong personalities and focuses that energy into a productive group. I want to thank all of you that have contributed your time and financial support to bring us to where we are today.

Presently ALCA has several exciting areas that are making great strides.

Foremost I want to give Beth Gosnell with All Season Wholesale Growers a big thank you for organizing the ALCP program. Between Beth and the numerous other volunteers, this program has experienced a significant increase in the number of people striving to become Certified Landscape Professionals. This program not only increases the knowledge of the people that take the courses but also increases the number of landscape professionals out there doing quality work. Education is necessary to change the thinking of a general public that presumes if you have a pickup and a mower, you are a landscaper. The landscape industry is so much more than that and each year; hundreds of companies are showing their customers what professional landscape management is all about.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this program.

Janet Waibel, Landscape Architect and Certified Arborist, has made a significant impact on ALCA over the past couple of years. Sustainable Landscape Management has given ALCA an opportunity to discuss professional landscape management with other associations. Many management companies have embraced SLM and have incorporated the SLM practices in their proposal requests. This month we have a program to certify ALCA members in Sustainable Landscape Management. While these principles are nothing new, they have finally given landscape professionals a single reference point to educate managers, homeowners, and all consumers how to maintain landscapes in the desert southwest. Without Janet, the volunteers that started two years ago with a peer review of the book, and through the creation of the certification program, we would not be where we are today. SLM and other ALCA programs are just one more way to increase the professionalism of your company.

Thank you to the SLM Committee and Robert Clinkenbeard for all of your hard work on this program. With more contractor and consumer education we can bring the color back to our plant life.

Moving forward, I hope to see even more value to your ALCA membership. In effort to make ALCA a more recognized name, we will be exploring options that will direct the public to look specifically for ALCA members for their professional landscape needs. We have initiated this campaign through presentations about Sustainable Landscape Management with some success however taking the next step is something that I believe is necessary to properly advocate professional landscaping in Arizona.

A future toward online testing and CEU’s for educational programs such as ACLP and SLM will further the availability of these programs to help educate those who have the desire to gain this knowledge.

or 35 years, Arizona landscape contractors have been participating in the “Excellence In Landscaping” awards competition that is sponsored

by ALCA. This is one of my favorite issues as we recognize the contractors for their phenomenal projects and the volunteers who contributed their time and talents throughout the year to make this banquet and event such a success. Over 270 guests celebrated in style on Saturday, November 19th at The Buttes in Tempe.

Our Awards Program is one of the most successful state landscape award competitions in the nation. The presentation reflects the association and industry’s commitment to designing, installing and maintaining our southwest environment as well as applying practices and methods that promote sustainability.

Preparations for ALCA’s biggest event are a year round planning process, and I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to Dwight Faires who served as the Director of the program.

Prior to the awards banquet, guests enjoyed a Silent Auction and Cocktail Reception. Thank you to Amy Brown with DHR Insurance, Bob Johns, and Dwight Faires with San Tan Landscape Management for facilitating this year’s fundraiser. Proceeds of $4,000 from the auction went to the ALCA Scholarship Fund. ALCA has distributed over $15,000 in the past two years to qualified recipients to assist in furthering their formal education and also to fund research projects within the landscape industry.

I would also like to extend a big thank you to Beth Gosnell with All Season Wholesale Growers for providing the beautiful hand crafted table decorations and Carrie Lightfoot with Garden of Glass for providing the recycled glass sprinkled around the centerpieces.

There would not be a program without the ALCA landscape contractor members who submitted their beautiful projects. I applaud the 27 companies that took the time and effort to take photos, fill out the application and compete against fellow ALCA members and friends to win an award. By participating in the program, these companies will be able to market to their clients, recognize their employees for their hard work, dedication and outstanding landscape projects and be recognized in the industry by being a leader of the pact and competing with the best! Over the past several years LBL has partnered with Assist4Africa in four celebrity sporting events that have raised over $140,000 for Partners In Malawi. These events are held locally and showcase National and Local celebrities and athletes. This years’ event was the Larry Fitzgerald Celebrity Softball Game, held in April at Salt River Fields. Many notable celebrities were Larry Fitzgerald, Kurt Warner, Michael Irvin, Jared Allen, Miles Austin, Donovan McNabb, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Darnelle Dockett, Adrian Wilson, Shane Doan, Keith Yandle, Paul Bissonnette, Jordyn Sparks, and Dan Majerle.

Having a suite at Jobing.com Arena for the Phoenix Coyotes and concert events, has also been a great way to offer donations to organizations and other fundraisers. Most games and concerts have at least two suite seats filled by winners of another fundraiser that LBL contributed to.

LBL also sponsors a yearly ‘Pink Ribbon Ladies Luncheon’. This is a private luncheon of friends and associates with the fundraising proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness. The 4th annual luncheon was held in October at the Spicery in downtown Glendale. There were vendors, live music and live airbrushing art work. Over 50 women participated this year, raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research.

The latest contributions have been coming from Katherine Gammage Circle donors at ASU Gammage; where they make a wonderful impact on the community through the performing arts. And also a ‘Proud Supporter’ of KAET Channel 8, PBS. Growing up in the Valley, Channel 8 has been a huge part of all of our lives; beginning with Sesame Street and progressing onto McLaughlin Group. It is a wonderful way for us to support the community in which we work, live and now raise our third generation.

Smartscape Training Smartscape, a training program for landscape professionals, is back for the Spring 2012 session! Classes run on Mondays and Wednesdays from January 23 to February 15, 2012, from 3:30- 6:00 PM. All classes will be held at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension office in Maricopa County (4341 E. Broadway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85040). Learn the fundamentals of proper irrigation and horticultural practices for landscapes in the desert southwest. During the eight-class Smartscape series, registrants receive a total of 20 hours of instruction by experts in the landscaping industry. For just $75, each registrant receives a notebook with valuable green industry information and snacks and refreshments at each class. Upon completion of the course, graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, a Smartscape lapel pin, and two Smartscape vehicle decals. Additionally, graduates have the option of being included in the Smartscape Certified Professional Online Directory, hosted by our sponsor, the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (http://www.amwua.org/ss_directory.html). Take time to learn hazardous material labels, warnings Many businesses generate wastes that are considered hazardous or harmful to human health or the environment because they are flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic.

Because of the potential for harm from these materials, workers must remain aware of the safety hazards and proper handling and disposal procedures in order to protect the environment, themselves and to comply with state and federal regulations.

Workers who generate or who handle hazardous waste need to undergo safety training, which includes the potential hazards, proper handling, collection, labeling, and storage, as well as transportation and final disposal or treatment.

In addition, workers should be trained on emergency procedures and accidental spill response.

Warning labels on hazardous material containers should provide much of the information you need to know to use the material safely. While you can get the same information (and more) from a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), only a warning label can tell you exactly which chemical is inside a particular container.

The MSDS is a document that contains information on the chemical make-up, use, storage, handling, emergency procedures and potential health effects related to a hazardous material. The material manufacturer prepares the MSDSs, which form the cornerstone of the respective standard.

The Hazard Communication standard requires employers to: • Maintain an inventory of hazardous materials • Provide employees training on the potential hazards associated with a material • Obtain and maintain MSDSs for each material onsite • Establish proper methods and types of labels • Inform contractors of the hazards to which their employees in the work area may be exposed.

Labels on containers serve as the alert that there may be hazards associated with using the material found in the container. Understanding these labels helps workers handle and use the material properly. Making sure that hazardous materials are labeled is a responsibility all employees must share. If you find an unlabeled hazardous material container with no label or a torn or unreadable label, tell your supervisor immediately.

And remember, NEVER use or handle hazardous material until you know for sure what it is!

The most important information on the container’s warning label is the word that indicates how hazardous the material is. There are three levels: • Danger, which means it is the most hazardous kind of material

• Warning, which means it is less hazardous than Danger, but more hazardous than Caution • Caution, which is the least hazardous rating, but the material still is hazardous If you would like more information on workplace safety please contact your SCF Association Coordinator.

ALCA/ASLA Golf Tournament The AZ Landscape Contractors Association paired up with the AZ Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Association to host a Golf Tournament at the beautiful Southern Dunes in Maricopa on Friday, November 18th.

Proceeds of $4,000 benefitted the Sky Blu Underwood and ASLA Scholarship Funds.

With 29 teams competing this year, the lowest score and 1st place prize went to the Belgard Hardscapes team: Jimmy Veltri, John Heffernan, Scot Kristen and Brian Huhta.

The 2nd place winners were the Western Tree and WilburEllis group: Eric Johnson, Mo Ibarra, Hunter Hawkins and Phil Hemminghaus.

The BlueStar Landscape team took 3rd place: Will Pereira, Ben Keilholtz, Shane Doherty and Mike Alexander (ForeverLawn AZ).

There were 7 finalists who sunk a 35 foot putt in the putting contest. Todd Huston, John Heffernan, Mike Sheehan, Tim Barrett, Chuck Allen, Chris Wentland, and Scott Fitzgerald competed against each other in a “putt off�.

Todd Huston sunk his putt for a $400 cash prize and then generously donated back half of his earnings. Thank you Todd!

2011 PRESIDENTIAL AWARD – Enchanted Garden Landscape – Private Residence Enchanted Garden Landscape was honored at ALCA’s 35th annual “Excellence In Landscaping” awards program on November 19th by receiving the Presidential Award.

This award is given to a project that demonstrates the highest level of excellence and creativity and voted the “Best of Show’ out of 60 entries. Accepting the award was Donna Winters who entered the private residence landscape project in the category of single family residential installation over $500,000. Dave Dever with Rain Bird Corporation sponsored and presented the award.

This estate combines three separate lots, which afford expansive views of the adjacent golf course. The terrain is extremely rugged with extreme variation in height and slope. Taking advantage of these conditions, the main home was set back from the street and encompasses the highest peak and panorama. The guesthouse is nestled into the landscape scenery below the main house, but with a setting just as spectacular. A meandering drive is carved through the existing grades and weaves through a landscape of large focal points consisting of native trees and Saguaros accented by boulders, Yuccas, and Agaves. Instead of large abrupt architectural retaining walls, boulders were used to retain grades. Pockets between the boulders have been planted with color draping down the slopes where the viewer sits in the garden. Due to varied microclimates, a diverse plant palette has been used incorporating exotic succulents and cacti respective of its Sonoran Desert setting.

2011 XERISCAPE AWARD – Native Resources International/Brian Qualls RLA, LEED AP – White Tank Branch Library The Xeriscape Award is given to a project that is planned and designed to create practical use of turf areas, has a selection of plants that appropriately uses mulches, soil amendments or improvements and efficient irrigation. When properly designed and maintained, the xeriscape project saves water, time and money through reduced plant water needs and lower maintenance requirements.

In order to be considered for this prestigious award, projects must first receive an award of excellence. This year’s Xeriscape Award was presented to Rob Kater with Native Resources International and Landscape Architect Brian Qualls for the White Tank Branch Library in the category of commercial installation $250,001 - $350,000.

The White Tank Branch Library project started in 2010 with the salvage of 16 trees. Native Resources also salvaged plants and cacti, including 54 Saguaros. These materials were then placed in an on-site nursery and cared for during the construction of the library.

Native Resources developed a design-build program in conjunction with landscape architect Brian Qualls. The stated challenge and goal of the design-build concept was to complement the Platinum Leeds status the library construction was trying to achieve by utilizing all the on-site salvaged material or materials only from an adjacent property. At the

entry, colorful arid adapted perennials and medicinal plants were the only nursery purchased material. Only site specific native seed was used for re-vegetation purposes.

The irrigation system was designed to provide an efficient commercial level hard-pipe drip irrigation system operated by a solar controller. Micro-tubing was placed at the drip line of the plant material with extra runs ready to expand outward in the second year to encourage new root mass to grow away from the root ball. The commitment to the LEEDS program was that the irrigation system would be turned off in year three.

The west to east sloping nature of the site allowed for rudimentary water harvesting techniques to slow and spread the natural water flow augmenting the irrigation water to the plants. On site rock was used as a mulch cover allowing the soils to better retain moisture and slow the water flow to encourage pioneer native plants to germinate. Wells were created on the downside of the plants to trap water runoff prior to entering the extensive wash and arroyos built and approved prior to the landscape installation. Roof and condensate water was directed to the two large front planters at the entry prior to entering the washes.

A native medicinal garden with a descriptive plaque showing the plants and describing their usages was installed at the library’s entrance as a gift from Native Resources.

2011 BEST SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT Asset Landscaping – University of Phoenix Stadium Asset Landscaping was honored at ALCA’s 35th annual “Excellence In Landscaping” awards program by receiving the Best Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) award for for the University of Phoenix Stadium. Bob Franchetto with Horizon Distributors presented the award to Matthew Johnson and Kevin Robinson.

The SLM award is given to a project that has benefited from applying practices which strive to preserve limited and valuable natural resources such as water and plant materials; reduce waste generation; allow for healthier, longer living and mature plant.

University of Phoenix Stadium boasts a large list of tree, shrub, and ground cover species designed to reflect the colors of the Arizona Cardinals as well as the architectural uniqueness of the structure itself.

The maintenance pruning plan includes very little gas powered

hedging. Power pruners are only used in extreme instances where very straight lines are required for long distances such as Lantana along the edges of sidewalks or when renovating some ornamental plant material.

Sustainable Landscape Management Standards are used throughout the plan specifications to ensure proper but reasonable horticultural methods are employed.

Challenges include extremely heavy use, heavy traffic, unusual results to the landscape from tailgating, and event attendance. Soil compacted with granite is a weekly challenge to rake out and properly treat.

This facility is an Arizona icon and Asset Landscaping is proud to be a contributing part of the organization.

He has worked for LeBaron & Carroll Insurance Agency since 1981. Along with sales responsibilities, he has served in many management capacities in the agency including sales management and training. He earned the designation of Certified Insurance Counselor in 1986 and currently is a Senior Partner of LeBaron & Carroll.

Milo is co-found of DIRT™. DIRT™ helps businesses in the landscape industry filter down to the critical issues that threaten their future, cost them unnecessary dollars, and then do something about it.

DIRT™ was created in an effort to give back to the industry and provide education workshops (such as DIRT™ University, “Wage and Labor Law” seminars and “Keeping Your Customers Safe and Sound”) to ALCA members at no cost to the association.

Milo has served on numerous Insurance Company Advisory Councils providing critical industry feedback and direction. He has served in

Landscape Contractor of the Year Shannon Scott, AAA Landscape Shannon Scott is a Tucson native but has lived in Phoenix since 1990.

He has 36 years of experience in the landscape industry, in which 34 of them have been with AAA Landscape.

Shannon holds certifications in ACLP, SLM,OPM and is a certified arborist.

Shannon has gone above and beyond in his contribution to the AZ Certified Landscape Professional program. He believes that continued education should be provided for all students to gain knowledge to the best of their ability, effort, and interest.

Shannon shows his dedication by instructing the ACLP workshops two Saturdays each month; one in Phoenix and one in Tucson. He also volunteers as a proctor for the certification exams. He is professional, dependable and always willing to go the extra mile for ALCA and the students.

Shannon’s time in the industry has been split between landscape management, landscape construction and arbor care. He is currently the Director of Education at AAA Landscape but considers himself a tree hugger first and forever.

Growing up on a nursery in Central Illinois, Michael Rockwell discovered first-hand the natural beauty of plants and their necessary physical and psychological contribution to our lives. After being under the wing of his father, Michael attended the University of Illinois where he received his degree in Landscape Architecture. Michael has been a Registered Landscape Architect in the State of Arizona for some 25 years and is co-owner of Azul-Verde Design Group in Cave Creek, AZ. As complicated as work can get he often follows the following aphorisms: • K.I.S.S. every project (keep it simple stupid!)

• He refuses “insanity” (where you keep doing the same thing over and over, with the same result, over and over!)

• But most important, what his father taught him, and what he continuously teaches own children, Tim (16), Elizabeth (15) and James (13) is to WORK HARD AND GOOD THINGS WILL COME! He also reminds his wife, Cathy, of this family tradition, as they work side by side every day!

Michael is extremely dedicated to the landscape industry and to ALCA as demonstrated by volunteering his time on numerous committees, having served on the ALCA Board of Directors and became President in 2001. Chris Martin, PhD – Plant Identification Dr. Martin came to Arizona State University in 1990 after receiving his Ph.D. in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Florida. He is a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS), Ecological Society of America (ESA), International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), the Metropolitan Tree Improvement Alliance (METRIA), the International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC), and the Arionza Community Tree Council (ACTC). Dr. Martin is a Wakonse Teaching Fellow and maintains an active and externally funded research program in urban plant ecology and environmental horticulture. He is also an affiliated faculty member and senior sustainability scientist in the ASU School of Sustainability and has served as a member of the vegetation subcommittee for the national Sustainable Sites Initiative.
