Contractors Increase in ALCA Membership

want to thank and congratulate each renewing and new member that has joined forces with ALCA so far this year. As of late May we have exceeded 2011 numbers and the ratio of contractors to associate members is 214 to 136. There are a number of reasons this is significant but maybe the most important is the fact that contractors have chosen to be a part of this organization when we are slowly rising out of one of the worse recessions in recent history and discretionary expenditures are still being analyzed.

The goal of the board has been to encourage Arizona registered landscape contractors to become a part of ALCA and come together as a professional industry. This means many things depending on who you are. For some it is gaining more certifications or learning more skills.

Others have learned more about the business side of the operation so they are better able to navigate the sometimes complicated office side of the business.

What has been even more rewarding is to see how many contractors are willing to take their time and help educate other members. Whether it is how to best install a tree, prune a shrub or troubleshoot irrigation, our fellow contractors have elevated the knowledge base that is thankfully ever growing. This dedication to the industry is why ALCA remains one of the oldest, strongest trade organizations around.

Another reason it is exciting to see a large amount of contractors is that the Associate members do not outnum-

ber the contractors. While many organizations struggle with a saturation of associate members, we strive to make the associate membership a significant value. With several associate members holding board positions, volunteering at the plethora of events, participating in committees and sponsoring events, there are ample opportunities to get in front of contractors and network to develop those relationships.

Like many of the contractors, there are numerous associate members that volunteer and financially support many of the educational and entertaining events throughout the year. The amount of knowledge among this group is astounding. Many times I have witnessed a contractor struggling with a problem and didn’t know where to turn for help. By finding the right person they were able to resolve the problem. This developed into a long term business relationship with the two companies which benefited both parties. We are all doing more with less and it is these types of connections that make us stronger, more effective, and allow us to provide better service to our customers.

Back Home Again In Indiana

I

ndiana is famous for a lot of things. Of course there is the Indianapolis 500, home of the Indianapolis Colts and Pacers, not to mention The Batesville Casket Company, the Battle of Tippecanoe and the birth place of famous people such as John Mellenkamp, the Jackson 5, Red Skelton, Larry Bird and a recipient of the Indiana Forestry Award, my dad Paul Gausman.

With a small farm less than 100 acres, my dad was bestowed with the Hoosier Homestead Award as it has been owned by our family for over 100 years. In honour of Indiana’s rich agricultural heritage, this program recognizes the contributions family farms have made to the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana.

At 84 years old, my dad still works the farm. In 1999, he was the recipient of the Indiana Forestry Award where the “family farm” was deemed as having one of the finest forests in Indiana. With hundreds of white oaks, my dad has ensured they grow straight and healthy by using sound management skills. He will fall only trees that interfere with these majestic trees; careful not to disturb the soil area around the root zone or clear too many surrounding trees so they do not get sunburned and prone to disease.

Dad will only harvest fully mature trees, and you can be sure they are some of the most beautiful specimens you will ever see.

A couple of months ago, I went back home to visit my family. Still in its infancy stage, Dad is making progress on his new project; a teepee in his park. Even though a teepee is considered a portable dwelling consisting of a conical framework of poles covered with skins or bark, this fixture is going nowhere.

Since my Dad’s favorite tool has to be the chainsaw, he cut, skinned and sealed various trees (sassafras, cedar, cherry and poplar) from the farm to make the poles for the framework. With the help of my brothers and nephew Aaron, the teepee was erected and draws a lot of attention from those who pass by and peer through the woods to catch a glance. Dad has lined the paths in the park with ferns that he transplanted from various parts of the farm. He has planted gardens of ginseng and hostas in which the soil and shade from the trees are the perfect conditions for these plants to grow abundantly. What a wonderful pastime for a passionate outdoorsman who has worked so hard all of his life.

And so another trip ends back home in Indiana. I will miss the damp musty smell of the forest floor, driving on a country road, eating at Skyline Chili and mostly spending time with my Dad, five brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces. And I will smile when I think about the great times we spent together; looking forward to their next visit to Arizona.

MEMBER UPDATES Vista Introduces Infinity Knuckle Mounting for Infinite, Precise Light Placement

Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting introduces the patent-pending Infinity Knuckle articulating mounting assembly for the 1096 Up & Accent fixtures. The mounting offers infinite adjustment capabilities, providing precise light placement.

The Infinity Knuckle mounting uses a fully sealed spherical grommet to prevent moisture penetration. The mounting works by passing the fixture wiring through the central hole in the knuckle mount stem to the supply connection splice point. When the supply connection is made, the light fixture is slipped over the knuckle mount stem and can be infinitely rotated to the precise position and locked into place with two screws.

“With the addition of the Infinity Knuckle Mounting, our 1096 Series lights are customizable and exact, offering more flexibility and options for use,” explained Cruz Pérez, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

When paired with Vista’s hot aiming feature, the Infinity Knuckle’s ability to give precise light placement is further enhanced. Hunter’s Pro-C Controller Gets Landscape Lighting Control Option

Hunter’s Pro-C has a well-earned reputation as a highly innovative light commercial/residential irrigation controller. Its modular design and sensor compatibility offer flexibility and efficiency for a wide variety of needs. Now the Pro-C offers one more bold option: the ability to control landscape lighting.

With a simple facepack upgrade the Pro-C can be used to control up to three PX lighting transformers using the PXSYNC relay box. Three new lighting programs (L1, L2, L3) allow lighting schedules to be created as easily as irrigation schedules, using the same familiar Pro-C interface. Lighting programs can run simultaneous to irrigation, and are not interrupted by irrigation functions like rain sensor condition or seasonal adjustments.

The Pro-C upgraded face pack and PXSYNC relay box is now available.

• 562505 - Pro-C face pack upgrade with integrated FX Lighting control • PXSYNC - Relay box for use with PX transformer IMMS Central Control Now Has GPRS Connectivity Option Hunter is introducing another new communications solution for the IMMS- ACC controller system: a GPRS “smartphone” wireless com module.

The ACC-COM-GPRS looks like other ACC communications modules from the front, but has a built in GPRS phone with a SIM card already installed.

Purchase of the GPRS com module option includes a data plan for the first year of operation.

The GPRS device must be activated by Hunter Tech Support upon installation and the product includes an activation form to provide the necessary account details for each controller. This form must be completed prior to calling Tech Support. After the first year of operation, the modules do require a monthly fee (billed annually) depending on the rate plan selected. This procedure is much simpler and less costly than the GSM modules it replaces (GSM modules will continue to be available for users with existing requirements). Hunter will bill end users directly for data service. An updated version of IMMS software will be released to permit GPRS communications. This is also another free software update to existing IMMS customers who wish to add GPRS to their communications options.

ACC-P2P-GPRS is a lower cost unit, with a reduced monthly fee, for a single-controller connection. P2P = Point to Point, meaning the connection cannot be shared with other ACC controllers. ACC-COMGPRS offers Site Plan connectivity with the ability to add many other controllers to the connection via traditional UHF radio and hardwired connections, as with other ACC com modules. IMMS software can include many different Site communication options. GPRS may be used for some Sites, the new LAN module may be used for others, and of course dial-up (POTS) and hardwire can be used.

GPRS is simply one more way to connect to remote controllers. Note: IMMS users must have internet connections at their computer to take advantage of GPRS communications. Data service is currently only available to U.S. customers.

Stetson Valley is a planned community that was thoughtfully developed with a homeowner’s lifestyle in mind. The picturesque location is tucked into the mountains located on Happy Valley Road and 55th Avenue. The completed Stetson Valley community will include over 2,000 homes. Within the community, ample natural area open spaces (parks, walk paths, greenbelts) give Stetson Valley a custom, family friendly, open feel.

With 46 acres of turf and over 138 acres of DG, Stetson Valley is a large community that requires a landscape management provider who can provide handson landscape, arbor and water management. With the right expertise and water management program in place, we were able to save the Stetson Valley Community Association over $50,000 and 11.2 million gallons of water in 2010 compared to the previous. ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance – Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort As the landscape maintenance contractor at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort since 2008, we have had the opportunity to help the resort bring their 10 year old landscape up to date by making it more sustainable while keeping in touch with the original landscape architect’s vision. We also maintain all interior plants and exterior hardscapes.

To protect the native desert environment through our landscape maintenance practices, we replace older, foreign plant material with native species from the area around the resort. We maintain wildlife habitats sensitively and leave them in a natural state during nesting season. We select new plants specifically suited to the conditions where they will be planted (sun, shade, etc.). We practice integrated pest management, and on high pollution days, we do not use gas-powered equipment.

We have also installed WeatherTRAK smart controllers to manage the resort’s water in the most efficient manner.

This Spanish Colonial home is located in the shadow of Camelback Mountain. The home incorporates opportunities to enjoy the scenic vistas. It also provides comfort and respite from the outside world. The architecture wraps in a u-shape around an interior courtyard containing the pool and spa. At the entry to the courtyard, a water feature is home to Koi. The Koi pond water appears to connect to a stream that pours into the pool. Fog misters create an oasis so the viewer forgets they are still in Arizona. A shady interior environment is planted with lush tropical materials. The spa is screened from the street view by mature plantings and berms, which are visually accessible from the spa area, while providing necessary privacy. Boulders are layered into slopes to retain grades and integrate with the water feature. Pots full of color and dramatic forms are placed within the yard completing this cozy outdoor living experience.

One the west side, rolling turf areas showcase pieces of art and provides a soft respite for museumgoers. Several years ago, we planted Mesquite trees along the north side of the building. They have been meticulously trained into beautiful shade-providing trees for the public. She provides pesticide safety information during site visits and training programs and develops educational workshops and resources to further extend pesticide safety information to the agricultural community. Ms. Weber graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science and later earned a master’s degree in Multicultural and Bilingual Education from California State University, Sacramento. Her thesis was on pesticide applicator exam formats and testing strategies.

Leading the Extension Horticulture program, Kelly Young works to identify the research needs of the nursery and landscape industries and provide educational opportunities to share information and technology. Kelly earned a master’s degree in Botany from Arizona State University and has been working with and teaching people about plants ever since. She developed and delivered a 16 credit hour vocational horticulture program for Rio Salado College and has taught biology at Mesa Community College. Kelly volunteers with the USAID Farmerto-Farmer program, bringing current technology to developing agricultural economies. Finishing an internship with Project CENTRL (CENter for Rural Leadership), Kelly advocates for the green industry while developing strong ties with decision makers throughout Arizona.

The youngest of seven children and the first native Arizonan in her family, Kelly’s family owned and operated a small landscape maintenance company in Phoenix. She has dug many planting holes and moved countless shovels of crushed granite.

Proud parents to two adult daughters, Kelly and her husband Robert enjoy paddling dragon boats at Tempe Town Lake competitively in their spare time.

Heat exhaustion, stroke dangers arrive with triple-digit temps

t was downright hot the weekend of April 21 in Arizona, breaking a 63-year-old record for high temperatures. The triple-digits are a reminder that heat exhaustion is most likely the culprit when a worker experiences an excessive loss of water and salt, and is sweating profusely.

In Arizona, heat-related deaths are the No. 1 weather-related killer.

Among those most prone to heat exhaustion are employees who work in a hot environment, such as bakeries, laundries or outdoors who have high blood pressure or who are elderly.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include: • Heavy sweating • Extreme weakness or fatigue • Dizziness, confusion • Nausea • Clammy, moist skin • Pale or flushed complexion • Muscle cramps • Slightly elevated body temperature • Fast and shallow breathing According to the Arizona Department of Health Statistics, nearly 1,500 people in Arizona died between 1992 and 2009 from exposure to excessive natural heat due to weather conditions That is an average of about 36 people a year.

Employees working in hot environments should be trained in first-aid treatment of heat exhaustion. When workers succumb to heat exhaustion: • Place them in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area to rest.

• Help them drink plenty of water or other cool, nonalcoholic, noncaffeinated beverages.

• If possible, have them take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath.

Employers can take a number of precautions to protect workers from heat stress, starting with scheduling the most rigorous jobs for the coolest part of the day. Workers also should be allowed to become acclimatized to the heat by working for progressively longer periods in the heat.

Other important steps include: • Lightening the physical workload and using worker rotation • Providing cool water or hydrating liquids (not caffeinated, sugary or alcoholic) for workers to drink • Allowing workers to take rests with water in cool break areas • Monitor those workers that are at higher risk of heat-related illness • Train employees to be alert to the signs of heat stress, prevention, and first-aid treatment • Have workers wear light-colored, loose-fitting, cotton clothing and remind them that wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) may increase the risk of heat stress Visit scfaz.com to view “Heat Stress” at SCF Arizona’s SafetyNet, a free online library of training videos.

ALCA Golf Tournament

T

he Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association held its annual Golf Tournament at the beautiful Quintero Golf Club on Friday, May 18th. Proceeds of $8,000 contributed to the Sky Blu Underwood Scholarship Program.

With a maximum turnout of 36 teams competing this year, the lowest score and 1st place prize went to the team from Integrated Horticultural Services: Nick Miller, Jared Wright, Bob Ramsey and Jeff Lundgren.

Capturing the 2nd place prize was the team from The Toro Co: Brian Whitcher, Bryan Kelly, John Barnes, and Drew Price.

The 3rd place team consisted of Kris Klein (FX Luminaire), Richard Thornton (Horizon), Chris Wentland (CYC Landscaping), and Chris Griffin (Unique Landscapes).

There were 4 winners in the putting contest sharing the prize of $100 each. They were Ben Chaet (Stillwater Landscape), Nick Gage (AAA Landscape), Brian McKenna (Midway Chevrolet), and Quinn Rosenstein (Rodeo Ford).

Cash prizes for “closest to the pin” went to Drew Price and Bob Kritz.

Dale Siever with Vermeer Sales Southwest collected donations for a chance to win a set of Calloway clubs and bag. It was Brian Whitcher’s lucky day!

There were a number of volunteers that assisted with the putting contest, float the boat contest, use the pro’s driver, and hole-in-one contest. Thank you Lorene Gilbert, Gina Larsen, Kelly O’Shaughnessy, Janell Soyster, Ivan Hilton and Lonnie Drake for making these events possible and adding a little extra fun and challenging contests on the course.

Many thanks go to the Golf Chairman Nate Gould with Hunter Industries for choosing such a beautiful course and organizing the tournament.

It’s important to differentiate yourself from your competitors, but there are limits and also federal rules involved in how you do so. For instance, you would not be in compliance if you use information that has not been peer reviewed or scientifically proven to promote one service or product over another. Comparing “natural” or “organic” fertilizers and pest control products over traditional products, or saying the products are safe are some of the areas where many legal and ethical violations in lawn care advertising occur. It has been some time since the industry has been under the microscope for its advertising practices, and, to keep it that way, it’s again time to take a look at the basic guidelines.

Familiarizing (or re-familiarizing) yourself with the Advertising Guidelines for Lawn Care Products and Services, developed by PLANET in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) several years ago, would be a great place to begin to determine whether or not your advertising is in compliance. This document can be found online at LandcareNetwork.org under the Government Affairs tab. Select Industry Tools, then Lawn and Landscape Issues Communication Toolkit, and then Lawn and Landscape Communication Toolkit Resources from the shaded Toolkit Quick Links box. While these are not laws, they do provide peer-reviewed guidelines to good practices. One example the FTC has used in this area has to do with unfairly comparing like services.

These guidelines apply to all communications with the general public and

include, but are not limited to, written and verbal communications using any medium, advertising or public relations efforts, and sales and solicitation contacts. Also included is any literature that is distributed with or without the company’s name. The key point to stress, and that many seem to miss, is how far your sales people can go with the claims they make in their sales pitches.

So, what can you say? In anticipation of this question, we also created the “What You Should Know About Lawn Care Products and Services” brochure. Reference is made to this brochure throughout the advertising guidelines because it contains great information you can share with your clients. For example, it details the difference between “organic” and “natural” with regards to lawn care products.

The ftc.gov website is another great resource for brushing up on what it considers “fair advertising.” The agency’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Business Center has a pretty extensive list of FAQs (Advertising FAQs: A Guide for Small Business found at business.ftc.gov) that are also very helpful. If you think the FTC will never find you or come to your location, consider that your state’s attorney general is the enforcer under the state or “little” FTC act.

Competition is good for the industry and the consumer. Let’s just do it in a legal, fair, and ethical manner that helps the entire industry. Lets all compete on the merits of our companies offerings and not on false or misleading statements about competitors and their services.

Phoenix April Member Mixer ALCA extends a warm thank you to We Rock AZ!, Inc. for hosting the April Phoenix ALCA mixer at their rock yard in the north valley. ALCA board members, landscape members, and vendors joined the We Rock AZ crew for an evening under the stars and among their thousands of boulders.

We Rock AZ!, Inc. is a landscape materials supplier in the north valley, specializing in surface select boulders, rip raps, and granites. For more than 20 years, landscape contractors, designers, and water-feature builders have partnered with the good folks at We Rock AZ and their prior rock yard owners at the famed “Melluzzo” rock yard near Cave Creek and the Loop 101 freeway to create dramatic landscapes and exotic backyard retreats for their corporate and retail customers. Just about everywhere you look across the valley, you’ll see boulders and landscape granite from We Rock AZ! As the temperature dropped and the sun settled, attendees were treated to another of our colorful Arizona cloud-streaked red/orange sunsets. Everyone enjoyed a tasty catered Mexican food meal from Macayo’s, wetted with beer, soft drinks, and even margaritas spilling from a fountain.

Among the events as the evening unfolded was a PowerPoint presentation prepared by company president, Mark Hollowell; he told a visual story of the We Rock AZ boulders, from their home in the mountains northwest of the valley, down the mountain to the rock yard, onto landscape contractors’ trucks, and through to their placement in customer homes across the valley. Several attendees asked questions and complimented the team on the “life of a boulder” presentation. All were invited to tour the rock yard and peer (if they dare!) over the edge down into the huge rock pit below the rock yard.

Our rock yard hosts donated numerous door prizes of yellow We Rock AZ! safety shirts, a certificate for free boulders or granite; and, a scavenger hunt that led attendees through the boulders to seek and find two “well-hidden” gift certificates. Thanks for another great ALCA mixer!
