PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A

s this year comes to an end, I would like to take a minute and reflect on where I started with ALCA, when my leadership roll evolved 2 years ago as becoming your ALCA President, and to where I am today. When I first served on the Board of Directors in 2010, I never imagined where that pivotal roll would eventually lead me. I took a leap, as I have done from time to time, and graciously accepted this opportunity as Director of Programs. I remember thinking just how I was going to play a key-roll and where I wanted to make an impact. As those years passed, I made friendships and built relationships that will last a lifetime. In 2018 when I Marty Monroy was first introduced as 2020 ALCA President ALCA’s President, I was nervous but ready for this new challenge. I had grown personally & professionally and from that growth I was able to be that key player that was needed. With the help of our outstanding Board of Directors we have accomplished our goals set in place 2 years ago. • Increased membership • Increased visibility with property management companies and the public • Expanded ALCA’s educational opportunities by offering the ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician program So, as I sit back and think about what is to come in my role next year in 2020 with ALCA still as your President. I can’t help but think of where I started, where I am today, and where I will be tomorrow. I am excited of the growth opportunities and the goals set in place as I have no doubt in my mind we will be successful. I look forward to continued friendships and relationships that empower me each day! By the end of this year take time and reflect, set goals for yourself professionally and personally, and look forward to taking a leap. Cheers to a wonderful 2019 and an even better 2020! Marty Monroy, ALCA President

CEO’S MESSAGE

Where Did The Year Go?

S

eriously, where did the time go? Basically, the busier you are during a time interval, the faster that time interval will feel like it passed. Well, there was a lot happening in 2019 so I’d like to recap some of the ALCA highlights. ALCA continues to grow its membership. Providing educational opportunities was once again at the top of ALCA’s to do list and boy was the calendar full. With over 80 volunteers to assist with these trainings, ALCA was able to accomplish the following: • 1,400 students attended ACLP workshops • 43 attended ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician workshop • 265 individuals attended SLM workshops • 80 business owners/managers attended various business oriented workshops In addition to these educational opportunities, over 320 members and guests enjoyed the annual ALCA trade show in February, 38 foursomes participated in the Sky Blu Underwood Golf tournament in May, and over 750 people attended the monthly member mixers. ALCA Board Members Bob Franchetto and Warren Runcorn took charge coordinating volunteers and worked very hard on the Arms of Love Foster Care community project by transforming the back yard for the young women aging out of foster care. As a member of the Arizona State Contractors Coalition (ASCC), ALCA and its members supported SB 1271 which was passed in the legislation in April. This bill will change Arizona law so contractors that make a mistake on residential construction project will only pay their fair share of the loss. The liability will not be passed along Judy Gausman to contractors who did nothing wrong. ALCA CEO A survey conducted by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and funded by the Arizona Landscape Contractors Association (ALCA) and the Arizona Nursery Association (ANA) produced the 2018 Arizona Green Industry Economic Impact Survey which measures annual sales, expenses and other key indicators to give an accurate view of the industry’s economic impact. The full report can be viewed on the ALCA.org website under Resources/Advocacy. With requests for more irrigation training, ALCA’s Education coordinator Heather Taylor continues to work diligently with volunteers on the ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician workshop. Offered in both the spring and fall of 2020, this program includes hands-on activities focused on the optimization of water usage and the efficiency of existing irrigation systems. The 3-day program will focus on site assessment, maximizing efficiency and troubleshooting & repairs. A big thank you to the ALCA team whose personal commitment to quality is obvious in everything they do. As the Education Coordinator, Heather Taylor does a phenomenal job focusing on curriculum development and coordinating the volunteers and instructors. Courtney Nielsen is a super star who has developed a great rapport with the members and keeps the ALCA office running smoothly. I am truly blessed to work with these amazing ladies who work with a purpose and pride. I would like to thank all of the ALCA members who support, participate, and encourage each other to succeed, all in an effort to elevate the integrity and professionalism of the landscape industry. With your support and the direction of a focused and dedicated Board of Directors, ALCA continues to flourish. Best to you in 2020, Judy Gausman, CEO

43RD ANNUAL

In Landscaping Awards

PROGRAM

Members of the Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association gathered to celebrate and recognize the fine work and artistry that the landscape industry provides to our beautiful state at the 43rd annual Excellence in Landscaping Awards Gala held on November 23, 2019, at the beautiful Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. The ALCA awards program reflects the association and industry’s commitment to designing and maintaining our southwest environment as well as applying practices and methods that promote sustainability. There are many people that contribute their time and talents throughout the year to make this program a success. As the Director of the Awards Program, Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers, spearheaded and coordinated ALCA’s largest event of the year. Thank you to the judges who contributed their time and expertise by viewing photos in the ALCA office and onsite visits in the heat of the summer. They were Dwight Faires, Beth Postma (All Season Wholesale Growers), Jean Coté (Mountain States Wholesale Nursery), Jackie Lyle (Civano Growers), Brian Whitcher (The Toro Company), Kim Kleski (Kleski & Associates), Christopher Cole (West Coast Turf), and Roy Mosel (Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply). Much appreciation goes to Jackie Lyle with Civano Growers for furnishing the colorful and beautiful table centerpieces. Thank you to Roby Everhart with Sunwest Golf & Reclamation for sponsoring the music during the cocktail hour and to Mike Uhrich with Genesis Landscaping for showcasing his talents on the piano. For dessert, everyone enjoyed some delicious warm chocolate lava cade, fresh berries and raspberry coulis sponsored by Association Outsources Services whose company collects the advertisements for the ALCA Influence magazine and the ALCA website. Thank you to all of the generous members who donated items for the silent auction that everyone enjoyed during the cocktail reception. Proceeds of over $9,000 went to the Jim Trog Water Management Memorial and ALCA Scholarship Funds. A special thank you goes to former lifetime achievement winner, Ed Macias for recognizing and announcing the Special Award winners. As the Master of Ceremonies, Brian Qualls with Unique Lighting Systems provided a Blue Hawaiian toast before introducing the awards. ALCA is truly fortunate to have members that support the awards program by sponsoring the various categories. Their generosity is amazing. These sponsors will be recognized with the winners throughout each issue of the ALCA Influence magazine. And of course, there would not be a program without the landscape contractors who submit their beautiful landscape projects. Forty companies took the time and effort to take photos, fill out the application and compete against fellow ALCA members and friends to win an award. By participating in the program, these companies will be able to market to their clients, recognize their employees for their hard work, dedication and outstanding landscape projects and be recognized in the industry by being a leader of the pack and competing with the best! A gallery of the award-winning projects may be viewed at ALCA. org/Gallery and in the upcoming issues of the 2020 ALCA Influence magazine.

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS

2019 Presidential Award

Sponsored by Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply

The Presidential Award is given to a project that demonstrates the highest level of excellence and creativity. This award is the “Best of Show chosen from over 80 submitted landscape projects.

Southwestern Native Landscape, Inc. Tiku Residence The design concept of the Tiku residence focused on balance and serenity. The clients wanted separate areas of tranquility and escape while maintaining a larger pool area for entertainment. The areas around the property included the pool/ entertainment space, the spa and fire patio, the vortex fountain entrance, the artificial turf playing field, the linear tiered rose garden, and finally the Japanese Zen garden. While the clients desired a diverse planting palette, the focal point of the Japanese Zen garden was to be more traditional with respect to plantings. With the inclusion of the meandering water feature, raised platforms were added to provide a tranquil setting to perform yoga. A considerable challenge with this project included the necessity of blending with sizeable retention basins required by the Town of Paradise Valley. Finally, the creative use of LED lighting helped to enhance the overall nighttime ambiance.

January/February 2020

Located in the heart of Scottsdale, The Enclave at Borgata offers luxury living in a community the homeowners call “Paradise on Earth.” The resort landscape is meticulously maintained to mirror the upscale feel of the community. Crews are onsite two days a week. Sustainable landscape practices are key to the desired look of the landscape. Long hedge rows of common myrtle are pruned and shaped with hand pruners and shears giving a natural look and constant blooms of white flowers. With the exception of tall ficus hedges that provide natural screens and homeowner privacy, most plant material onsite is pruned by hand. Two rows of stately Chinese pistache trees greet homeowners and visitors to the front office. An open courtyard next to a large shade trellis adorned with constantly blooming San Diego Red Bouganvillea and a grouping of evergreen elms provide a tranquil setting for the homeowners. The community pool is completely enclosed with plantings of green hopseed bush and mediterranean palms. Wrought iron fencing is adorned with beautiful yellow Lady Bank’s Rose. The lush oasis blended with desert-adapted groundcovers, shrubs, and trees providing homeowners in this community their own “Paradise on Earth.”

The Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association schedules a series of four-hour workshops and online exams covering 10 topics designed for interaction and hands-on learning. * Dates and locations are subject to change. * * Please park in the middle section of the ALCA parking lot and not in front of the businesses *

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS

ALCA 2019 SPECIAL AWARDS Chosen by their peers, four ALCA members were honored with special recognition at the 43rd annual “Excellence in Landscaping” awards gala at the beautiful Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park on November 23, 2019. These individuals have demonstrated a strong dedication and commitment to ALCA and the landscape industry.

Thank you to our Special Award Sponsors

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Brian Ham, Garrett Ham, Richard Spross/Santa Rita Landscaping, Inc. Sponsored by Civano Growers In 1985, Brian and Garrett Ham began Santa Rita Landscaping out of two pickups and a barn after hearing neighbors complain about their landscapers never calling them back or doing what they said they would. The two soon realized that if they followed through on their promises, and treated their clients right, they could be successful. The company began growing, with emphasis moving from residential maintenance to installation, growing from two trucks and a few tools to multiple trucks and the need for a construction yard to store the equipment. In 1990, Brian and Garrett were approached by US Homes (now Lennar Homes) with their first opportunity to break into the homebuilder market. The Santa Rita team exceeded expectations and quickly became known as the “go-to” landscape contractor for homebuilders. These relationships created opportunities to expand into commercial construction, maintenance, and waste services. It was around this time that Richard Spross began his own landscape company, Southwest Enviroscapes. Richard had spent time working underneath landscape architects and landscape contractors in the Tucson area, and realized a need in the market for a professional commercial construction landscape contractor. At Southwest Enviroscapes, Richard created a highly talented group of professionals that quickly became a market leader for commercial construction through strong relationships and a reputation to complete projects on time and budget. Both Santa Rita Landscaping and Southwest Enviroscapes were hit hard by the Great Recession starting in 2008, but both were able to make a profit every year and become stronger companies for it. However, as a

result, Brian, Garrett, and Richard all realized a need to diversify their offerings and create a company that could serve all of their clients’ Jackie Lyle presented the award needs and be viewed as to Garrett Ham “Southern Arizona’s Landscape Solution.” Having all grown up together in Sahuarita, AZ and sharing common values of professionalism and integrity, it seemed like a natural fit to merge the two organizations. In 2012, Santa Rita Landscaping and Southwest Enviroscapes Richard Spross merged, truly creating “Southern Arizona’s Landscape Solution.” Since 2012, the three have focused on growing Santa Rita Landscaping into a destination company and building a team that can carry on their vision and the remarkable culture that they have created to take the organization to an even higher level. Brian, Garrett, and Richard have long been a true asset of the landscaping industry in Arizona by Garrett Ham creating lasting partnerships with vendors, clients, employees, and local communities that helped create a stronger landscaping industry in Arizona.

Quality, Service, and the Newest State-of-the-Art Eco-Friendly Turfgrasses/Groundcover

W

est Coast Turf/Western Sod (WCT/WS) is undoubtedly the most famous face in Arizona’s turfgrass industry. We offer top professional quality natural turfgrass and installation services to all of our customers, whether they are an ultra-particular golf course superintendent wanting perfection for his or her members or a PGA Tour tournament, a landscape contractor wanting the best product at the best price, an MLB spring training facility needing top quality product, or a homeowner looking for the newest environmentally friendly lawn. We also offer same day easy pick-up’s at our Scottsdale farm.

And Mr. Wise Grass—Our Sod Blog…….

Danek has been roped into his role as our resident “Mr. Wise Grass.” His blog “Ask Mr. Wise Grass” (found at http://mrwisegrass.com ) offers turf advice, tips, insights, and answers. “I am passionate about grass, and I love helping people get their lawns in top condition,” Danek said. WCT/ WS offers “Lunch and Learn” presentations for those wanting in on the latest detailed industry product information—just ask! Contact West Coast Turf/Western Sod at 800/832-8873, online at www.wwestcoastturf.com, or find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ westcoastturf. Life is short. Sod it!

The Latest State-of-the-Art Grasses, NEW super drought tolerant groundcover, and the “Good Ol’ Standby’s”

Environmentally friendly turfgrasses are vital to the future of the industry, and one of our answers is the Platinum Paspalum. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time, and I haven’t seen a grass out there better for our desert,” Jay Danek explained. WCT/WC has recently introduced Kurapia sod—a newly developed drought tolerant natural groundcover. It creates highly unique and versatile landscape design. It requires less water, and maintenance than traditional turfgrasses. It has the look of a lawn—it grows close to the ground and rarely exceeds 1” high. If left un-mowed, it produces small white sterile flowers, or they can be mowed off for a textured simple green look. It is found to be tolerant of saline, acidic, and basic soils, and grows best in full sun or partial shade. It is not recommended for heavy traffic areas. “The market is certainly buzzing over Kurapia sod. It wasn’t available in sod form before but we’ve got it now. It is more costly than traditional turfgrass, but those who have tried it are loving it and using it on more projects after their first time. It is a pretty cool plant, and we’re happy that we have the fields established here for sale,” said Danek. “We’ve also expanded our inventory of St. Augustine, and our popular EZ-Turf,” Danek said. “And--BOBSod is still the homeowner ‘go to” grass. But the new grasses and Kurapia are the ones that everyone wants to know more about.”
