would like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Sky Blue Underwood Scholarship Golf Tournament. Blackstone Country Club at Vistancia was a tremendous host, and we will be returning next year. I would encourage you to get signed up as soon as registration opens next year as this year we had a waiting list to play. For this year’s tournament, I was tasked with manning the Par 5 18th Hole. This was the Pro Hole where, for $20, you could have the Club Pro drive the ball for you. Let me tell you many tried but no one was able to beat Andy Rauscher’s drives. Andy’s average drive was about 340 yards with his longest being 376 yards. During our down time, I was able to ask him many questions about golf and his career. He grew up living next to the fairway of a golf course in Wisconsin and has been playing since he was 6. Andy missed this year’s U.S. Open qualifier by one stroke! To say that he is passionate about golf would be an understatement. Nate Deason, Serpent Curator for the Phoenix Herpetological Society, was one of our guest speakers at May’s Monthly mixer held at Lucille’s Bar-B-Que. He spoke about the misconceptions concerning Rattlesnakes and Gila Monsters. Nate would do anything to rescue these reptiles and asked us to do the same, but he would also be the

first to tell you that he is terrified of spiders and will squash them into the ground every chance he gets! Nate has been working with snakes all of his life and is extremely knowledgeable. To say that Nate is passionate about snakes would also be an understatement. I have been in the landscaping industry since I was 17, and I have to admit that I had lost the passion that I had for our industry and chosen profession. Thankfully, within the last year, that passion has returned. The early mornings, long days, and late nights which encompass our schedules are no longer a burden to me because I am doing what I love. There are many reasons for this rekindling, but I would like to name a few: I work for a great employer who cares for his employees; the team that I work with is dedicated to the success of our company; I have begun to enjoy the hobbies that are dear to me; and finally, but not least, I am surrounded by dedicated professionals here at ALCA. The 2014 Board makes my job very easy. What are you passionate about? I hope that as you enter the summer months you are able to pursue your passions, dreams, and live life to the fullest. Every day is Arbor Day

ob Franchetto has been ALCA’s Director of Community Projects for the past five years, and with the help of fellow ALCA members, has given back to the community with beautiful landscape projects all over the valley. This past April, Bob helped the students at Kyrene de la Mariposa Elementary School plant a Southern Live Oak tree at the entrance of their school in celebration of Arbor Day. Student Council representatives from grades 3, 4 and 5 gathered around as the Assistant Principal Tammy Thaete read the Arbor Day proclamation: Whereas, in 1872, J Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and the holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, lower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products. Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beatify our community. Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. Now, the Kyrene de la Mariposa Elementary School do hereby proclaim April 25, 2014 as ARBOR DAY and urge all students to celebrate Arbor Day and to support the efforts to protect our trees and woodlands and further, urge all student to plant and care for trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations. Bob demonstrated how to properly plant a Southern Live Oak by first roughing up the sides of the rootball in order to loosen the roots. The students enjoyed digging in with their hands to fill in the hole with dirt and pack it in with their feet. After staking and watering the tree, the project was complete. Thank you to Beth Gosnell with All Season Wholesale Growers for graciously donating the Southern Live Oak tree. The students were able to take home and share 150 tree seedlings compliments of Kevin Salamandra with Arid Zone Trees. Each student read the description of the Parkinsonia florida, the Blue Palo Verde, which is a species of Palo Verde native to the Sonoran Deserts of Southern Arizona and our state tree. Its name means “green pole or stick” in Spanish, referring to the green trunk and branches. It grows to heights of 33–39 feet and is a rapidly growing large shrub or small tree that rarely survives to 100 years. At any time in these students’ lives, they will be able to come back and visit their grade school knowing that they planted this magnificent tree that still shades the sidewalks for the students at Kyrene de la Mariposa Elementary School. GOLF TOURNAMENT

2014 Golf Tournament The Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association held its annual Golf Tournament at the majestic Blackstone Country Club at Vistancia in Peoria on Thursday, May 8, 2014. With a waiting list going into the tournament and a maximum turnout of 36 teams competing this year, the tournament was a success! Proceeds of $4,800 were dedicated to the Sky Blu Underwood Scholarship Program. The lowest score and 1st place prize went to Southwest Sod’s team: Josh Perrault (Southwest Sod), Roby Everhart (SunWest Golf & Reclamation), Max Everhart (SunWest Golf & Reclamation), and Dick Roberts (DTR Landscape Development). Capturing the 2nd place prize was the team playing for FX Luminaire: Kris Klein (FX Luminaire), Chris Griffen (Unique Landscape by Griffen), Mike Larchick (CYC Landscaping), and Chris Wentland (CYC Landscaping). Coming in 3rd place was the Rodeo Ford team consisting of Jim Mitchell, Paul Bruccoleri, Larry Walton, and Linnis Rich. Playing for Jim was his son Mitch Mitchell. The putting contest had a tie this year. Todd Huston (ISS Grounds Control) and Bob Schottke (Hunter Industries) split the prize money. The Closest to the Pin winner was Dave Sandrock with John Deere Landscapes. Reid Iber with AAA Landscape took home the prize for the Longest Drive. Thank you to Kim Kleski, Kelly O’Shaughnessy, Karen Draeger, Jessica Griffin, Tony Acosta, and Monte Hoskins for volunteering to help with the registration and specialty holes. 2013 Excellence in Landscaping Awards RECIPIENTS OF AWARDS OF DISTINCTION

Sustain Scape, LLC – Heffernon Residence Single Family Residential Installation $25,001 - $50,000

The clients contracted Sustain Scape to design and install an outdoor living space equipped with areas to cook, eat, and relax, as well as areas for herb, vegetable, and fruit gardening. About 1,200 square feet of different shaped gardens were incorporated with careful attention to locations of each plant. Much of it depended on the orientation and sun exposure. The more lush plants were located along the back wall for a nice backdrop and the less attractive plants were placed in less conspicuous places. Desert plants were included to blend the gardens with their natural surroundings. Raised walls and trellis structures for vining vegetables were installed to soften the appearance of the large retaining wall. The raised planters with stairs were also designed so the homeowner could garden comfortably. A small counter space and sink were installed so she could clean the vegetables. While function was an important part of this backyard design, the aesthetics were subtly added by hand picked decorative materials and designing circular patterns in the pavers.

Sonoran Landesign – Private Residence Single Family Residential Installation $175,001 - $250,000 Sonoran desert native plants were used to revegetate the area cleared for the home’s construction. Saguaro, bursage and fairy duster were selected to blend with surrounding natural areas. A one-hundred-twenty-foot exposed aggregate and paver driveway delivers visitors through this desert landscape. From the driveway, a prominent entry area opens to an oasis-like courtyard. Here Mediterranean plants, a hand-carved tiered fountain and small artificial turf area provide a colorfully and lively welcome. This entry courtyard is the larger of two, fully enclosed, outdoor living rooms, each containing fire and water features. In the backyard travertine, flagstone, brick and pavers define various recreational use areas. A generous use of glazed ceramic tile creates the Spanish colonial theme the homeowners love. Numerous large and colorful pots contain trees and seasonal flowers. Multiple areas were designed for exotic plants, roses and flowering perennials all surrounding a perfectly tended Tiff garden.

The Pond Gnome - Gandhi Residence Special Water Feature Residential Installation

This 15’x15’ Koi pond was designed during a remodel of the entire property four years ago. Our main design objective was to match the existing swimming pool waterfall, as well as to tie it together visually from the perspective of the back patio. Sixteen tons of surface select boulders were used to create the pond with its two waterfalls, one of which disguises a biological filter rated for a pond twice this size. The secondary waterfall sources out of a carbon filter for maximum water clarity and purity. The falls are fed by two energy-efficient modified trash pumps so that should one fail, the other can maintain the oxygen levels and water quality. The commercial-grade pump vault is located in the low area of the landscape. A storm-water harvesting tank was incorporated into the project to take advantage of the free water provided by Mother Nature during rain events.

Wickenburg Landscape & Installation set out with a lofty vision to transform their simple downtown corner into an internationally relevant cultural learning center that could export the town’s rich culture to the rest of the world. The scope required removal of necessary plants for construction and protection of the remaining landscape during the renovation and remain on the project for a minimum of three years to reach their desired vision. They committed to do this at no charge and re-created the setting around the museum. An ore cart was setup to show it dumping a load of granite rip rap and planting new shrubs around the life size bronze centerpiece. This sculpture was inspired by a painting which is currently on display in the museum. Grasses and creosote were planted to mirror the painting which now gives visitors the sense of continuity between museum buildings.

Preparing Trees for Summer John Eisenhower, Integrity Tree Service

T

rees are one of our most valuable landscape assets. They provide shade, energy savings, wildlife habitat, aesthetic beauty and increased property value to our homes, businesses and communities. But summer in Arizona can be hard on trees. High temperatures, low rainfall and windstorms can threaten trees and the significant investment we have in them. Here are some important tips for preparing your trees for summer.

Select and Plant Stable Trees • Start by buying good quality plant stock, preferably trees with low growth along the main trunk. These trees are less susceptible to sunburn and are more stable due to better trunk taper. Avoid lollipop trees like the two trees in the foreground of the photo. The trees behind them would be a better purchase. • Consider buying native or desert-adapted trees when possible. They usually have a lower profile and are less susceptible to wind damage. • Plant trees in groups when possible. They buffer the sun and wind from their neighbor trees. Stake Young Trees • After planting, stake or guy your tree only if necessary. The goal is to train the tree to be on its own, not to prevent it from moving. A staking system should serve only as a failsafe. • If the tree needs to be staked, suspend it between the stakes firmly enough to prevent it from falling over but loose enough to allow it to move slightly in the wind. • Use a soft material such as nylon webbing to tie the tree to the stakes. • If the tree has a stake tied directly to the trunk when it is purchased, it should be removed at the time of planting. This “travel stake” is only intended to get the tree to its final destination and can cause damage to the trunk if not removed. • Remove stakes as soon as the tree roots are anchored in the surrounding native soil, usually within the first year after planting.

Prune Properly Wind forces act upon trees in unique ways depending on the distribution of foliage along the trunk and branches. All pruning cuts reduce the drag (wind resistance) on the tree canopy but the location of the cuts determines where the force of the wind is concentrated. A big mistake is to over-thin the lower tree crown with the idea that this makes a tree safer. There is an unacceptable pruning practice called Lion’s Tailing that removes an excessive number of smaller branches from the tree interior at the neglect of the outer third of the crown. The wind blows freely through the lower crown but is concentrated in the lion tails of heavy foliage on the branch ends. This often results in mid-line branch breaks. Properly pruned branches have an even distribution of foliage along the entire length of the branch. Consequently these branches evenly distribute the force of the wind, transferring that force to the base of the branch where the diameter is greater and it can better support branch movement. Tips to prepare your trees for summer storms: • Minimize pruning after planting. New trees need as much foliage as possible to create the energy reserves for healthy future growth. • Don’t Lion Tail your trees. • Avoid removing watersprouts, the small shoots growing along the lower trunk and main branches. Watersprouts help their parent branches develop taper needed to support increasing end weight as trees mature. • Concentrate pruning in the outer third of the canopy using primarily reduction pruning techniques. Proper reduction pruning requires special skill to avoid making heading or stub cuts. If your trees are large or have excessive end weight, consider hiring a Certified Arborist to help.

Hello, my name is Ashley Beebe. I would like to introduce myself by saying how privileged I feel to be working for a friendly and outstanding company. I am 23 years old, born and raised here in the valley of the sun. I have 3 younger siblings; two brothers and one sister. In my elementary and Jr. High years I attended Freedom Academy and graduated from Primavera Online Highschool. Growing up I fell in love with photography. I discovered a passion for the art and received my first DSLR camera from my parents. My summer days were spent capturing moments and editing them at night for my clients. Photography can be expensive for the one taking the picture so I started working for my parents at the age of 16. My parents own a pest control company and I started out as a part-time “file clerk”. Soon afterwards I started working full time and worked my way around the different positions in the office. A few years later I held the title as assistant manager. After six years of working for the family business, I chose to venture out and experience something new. Last year in October I started my new temporary job as a receptionist at Premium Healthcare Services, assisting the clients and assigning them to caregivers in their area. Shortly after I jumped at the opportunity ALCA was offering as administrative assistant and am excited to be a part of this great team. I hope to add my creativity and expertise to ALCA and am looking forward to watching the organization continue to grow.

Battling Spurge: WSSA Offers Weed Control Tips

T

hough the economy and housing market have begun to recover in the aftermath of the Great Recession, one unexpected impact still lingers. Landscape nurseries that saw fewer plant sales during the downturn are now battling weeds entrenched in unsold containers of perennials, shrubs and trees. Some of the most common weeds battled by nurseries are in the spurge or Euphorbiaceae family, a group of low-growing plants that thrive in hot and sunny locations. Examples include sandmat and the spotted and prostrate spurges. “The nursery owners I work with here in the Southwest say spurge is their number one pest problem and a real health hazard for their workers,” reports Kelly Young, a member of the Western Society of Weed Science and assistant agent for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. When the stems or leaves of spurge plants are broken, they ooze a milky sap that can cause dermatitis and eye irritation. Dense, low-growing mats of spurge foliage can also harbor fire ants, ginger ants, red ants and other insects with a venomous bite or sting, which place nursery workers at risk. “Workers loading plants onto a delivery truck will frequently hand-weed each pot so it looks pristine and weeds aren’t transported to the job site,” Young says. “That means there are lots of opportunities for insect bites and for exposure to the irritating sap.” Weed scientists say early intervention is critical to spurge control. The spurges flower when very young and produce seeds that can germinate right away, with little or no dormancy. As a result, spurge weeds often spread quickly. Young offers the following tips that can help nurseries gain the upper hand and eradicate spurge from plant containers: • Pull it up. Remove all spurge you find growing in pots to prevent further seed production. Wash your hands and forearms thoroughly afterwards, even if you were wearing gloves. • Use the right herbicide the right way. Apply a preemergent herbicide according to the precise instructions on the product label. It’s especially important to calibrate your sprayer to make certain you’re not using too little or too much. “I’ve seen nurseries apply herbicides at only half the recommended label rate, and they weren’t getting the results they were after,” Young says. • Add water. Preemergent herbicides used to treat spurge need to be watered into the soil to form a protective barrier. • Add mulch. Top off each pot with a two-inch layer of compost, manure or wood chips. • Keep your hands off. It may be tempting to dip a finger into a pot from time to time to see if plants need to be watered. But doing so will break the protective shield established by the herbicide and create an opportunity for weeds to sprout. • Establish a zero tolerance policy. If you spot spurge that has escaped control, pull it immediately. Don’t toss the plants on the ground or you could spread hundreds of tiny seeds.

“I’ve worked closely with nursery managers who were convinced nothing would work against spurge,” Young said. “Invariably, though, I discovered missteps in how they were trying to manage the weed. They weren’t applying herbicides in the right amount, weren’t watering the herbicides in or were skipping some other vital step. Once they buttoned up their process, they were able to eliminate the weed entirely.”

Spurge control tips for homeowners Rich Bonanno, Ph.D., a member of the extension faculty at the University of Massachusetts, says spurge isn’t found only in nurseries. It is a frequent, unwelcomed guest in lawns and gardens and in crevices along sidewalks, driveways and parking pads. And it can overrun other desirable plants growing in its path. There are steps homeowners can take to manage spurge effectively, though. If you are adding new plants to your landscape, make certain you aren’t transporting spurge home from the nursery. Closely inspect pots for weeds before planting new trees, shrubs or perennial plants. Also, follow the protocol recommended for nurseries and apply a thick layer of mulch around your new plants. If you choose to use a preemergent herbicide on your lawn or plant beds to protect against spurge and other weeds, use the right amount, apply it according to the label directions and water it in. Scout for spurge through the summer and pull any seedlings that have escaped control – being careful to wash your hands thoroughly when you are done. “With a little vigilance, you can keep spurge in its place,” Bonanno says.

Simple Steps for Smart Irrigation Month Article provided by Doug Donahue, Ewing Irrigation

J

uly was named “Smart Irrigation Month” by the Irrigation Association in 2005 to promote efficient irrigation and water use practices. Although it’s good that we have a month to celebrate smart irrigation, why not practice it every month? We all need to be good stewards of water, one of our most precious natural resources. This is especially important here in the Desert Southwest where we receive so little precipitation. This July, consider implementing some permanent changes that will help you to install and maintain more efficient irrigation systems. So, what are some simple, practical steps that you can begin to take during this Smart Irrigation Month?

1. “I can’t stand the pressure” One of the first things to look at with a sprinkler system is the operating pressure. A sprinkler head has to have enough water and pressure to make it work properly. That being said, too much pressure is not a good thing. Sprinklers with too much pressure use more water yet less efficiently. Symptoms of high pressure are misting, fogging, and high water bills. There is a great tool that can help diagnose pressure related problems with sprayheads. Hunter makes a pressure gauge adapter that sells for less than $5. Every sprinkler contractor should have one. When used with a gauge, the pressure at the sprayhead is known within minutes. If the pressure is too high, say over 50psi, decisions can then be made about managing the high pressure. 2. Switch to high-efficiency (HE) nozzles Traditional sprayhead nozzles are probably the least efficient way of watering. The distribution uniformity (DU) of a traditional sprayhead system is only about 40%. Most of the major irrigation manufacturers now offer HE sprayhead nozzles ranging in price from about $2-$7. Examples include Hunter’s MP Rotators, Rain Bird’s HE-VANs, and Toro’s Precision Spray and Precision Rotary nozzles. Simply switching to HE nozzles can increase the DU of the system to about 70%. Use HE nozzles on your new installations and consider retrofitting the nozzles on existing systems to almost double the efficiency of the system.

3. To smart controller, or not to smart controller One of the most exciting advances in the irrigation industry in the last few years is the “smart” controller. A smart controller receives input from a weather sensor or soil moisture sensor and automatically determines how much water is needed on a daily basis. Smart controllers offer tremendous water savings potential when used appropriately. A smart controller cannot overcome deficiencies in a sprinkler system. A system should be hydraulically sound before considering the use of a smart controller. This includes correct operating pressure, head-to-head spacing, and nozzle selection. There are many different types of smart controllers available. A recent, impressive new one is Toro’s Evolution Series Controller. The Evolution is easy to program, easy to upgrade to smart control, and is offered at a very attractive price point. Options include a wireless weather sensor, wireless soil moisture sensors, and a cool little remote. The controller and the remote can also be used to operate two wireless relays which can be used to turn on things like pumps, lighting, and water features. 4. Manufacturers and Distributors Two resources to help you in your effort to practice smart irrigation are the manufacturers and distributors. All of the major irrigation manufacturers have staff living here in Arizona. They are always available to visit with you and to make you aware of their new products. They might even provide a sample or two. The local irrigation distributors are actively involved in promoting the many products that they sell. This includes not only sprinklers but other water management products and services like AquaSmart, soil analysis, and organic fertilizers to name a few. Take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by your local irrigation distributor and contact their water management specialist to learn more ways to practice efficient irrigation starting with this Smart Irrigation Month.

The ICPI Arizona Chapter is a local organization made up industry leaders including manufacturers, distributors, contractors and ancillary producers. Their purpose as a Chapter of the ICPI is to market and promote the use of concrete pavers and segmental retaining walls in the state of Arizona.
