PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

President’s Message

I

hope that your first half of the year has been busier and more successful than you could have imagined. Our summer started off cooler than normal and while we were able to enjoy it longer than usual, it was only a matter of time before we hit those triple digits. We are finally getting our Bermuda grass dialed in and looking Tony Acosta good and we are already thinking about scalping and over 2015 ALCA President seeding. The cycle never really ends, does it? In the last few months my role and responsibilities within my career have shifted from Operations/Production to Sales. I have always been somewhat involved in sales but doing so on a daily basis is a welcomed change. I find myself interacting more frequently with ALCA members as competitors; bidding on many of the same projects etc. These “competitors” however are my friends and colleagues. My involvement with ALCA over the last seven years has given me this opportunity. I feel that representation in governmental affairs, certifications, education and professionalism are extremely important and ALCA does them well. Camaraderie is one of the benefits that I love about the association and one of the things that I cherish most. Many of my competitors are people who I consider my dear friends and choose to spend time with outside of work. There are many fun events that ALCA hosts to nurture these relationships. Obviously we have our monthly Document1 2/29/04 2:44 AM Page 1 mixers but I want to briefly talk about Field Day and

our Golf Tournament. This year’s Field Day had over 300 in attendance and as usual was a success. This event is treated by some of our members as their company picnic with many fun events and things to do. Some of the fun things included a bounce house, petting zoo, games of skill and luck, snow cones and of course our famous team Tug ‘o War. Our golf tournament was just as fun and successful and you can see a recap in this issue. For the last two years at the ALCA Golf Tournament, I have had the opportunity to work with Monte Hoskins of Midway Chevrolet manning the “Drive by the Pro” specialty hole. Trust me when I say that this is more enjoyable to me than trying to swing a club at a little white ball and some of you who know me know what I am talking about. What I really like about helping at the 18th Hole is just talking to all the team members when they come by, reconnecting with old friends, and meeting new ones. I was on the receiving end of many jokes but believe me others were too. Just ask Mark Stutsman of Target Specialties. Mark gave Scott Ring a run for the money for best dressed. I am truly blessed to be a part of this association and I hope you are too. As I finish out the last 6 months of my presidency, we will continue to roll out new educational curriculum and celebrate our annual awards banquet but never forget to enjoy yourself and your colleagues along the way. God bless, Tony Acosta

CEO’S MESSAGE

ALCA Field Day

M Judy Gausman ALCA CEO

6

y eight year old granddaughter has never missed an ALCA Field Day and this year was no exception as she enjoyed herself tremendously along with 350 other family members of the landscape industry. There were a lot of repeat and new faces that enjoyed the action packed event at SRP’s PERA Club on a beautiful Saturday in April. Sponsors hosted a variety of interactive and competitive individual and team events. The individual events included a contest for launching a tennis ball with a slingshot tied to lawn mowers aimed at targets to score points. This creative event was hosted by the Horizon crew. Brandon Kelly and Eric Stammen with Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting sponsored the golf chipping contest and Nate Gould with Hunter Industries hosted the bean bag toss. Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers tested the knowledge of participants by identifying a selection of plants used in the landscapes. Cristin Osterman and Hector Albarran with Stotz Equipment held a Bobcat skills challenge while Scot Kristen with Belgard Superlite Block ran a basketball free throw contest. Marty Monroy and Terre Caraway with Cutting Edge Curbing set up a balloon pop competition and Stephen Kimball with Bayer hosted a fast pitch contest. Hosting the horse shoe competition was Valley Tree Feeders and the wheelbarrow contest was sponsored by Sunrise Nursery. All could enjoy playing some volleyball which was sponsored by Ewing Irrigation. Participants took home some fabulous prizes as they competed for first, second and third place. This year, Toro Company/Irritrol/Unique Lighting sponsored a salsa cook-off with some fierce hot competition. The people voted and coming in first place was Dwight Faires with San Tan Landscape Management who took home the $100 prize. Marty Monroy (well actually Brandi Monroy) came in a close, close second just one vote short. To cool down the fire from the salsa, Evergreen Turf served snow cones and some popcorn on the side. Thanks to Jim Mitchell with Rodeo Ford, children of all ages enjoyed jumping around in an inflatable bouncer and kids of all sizes gravitated to the most popular petting zoo where the animals received a lot of lovin’. And of course, Field Day closed with the ever popular tug ‘o war contest sponsored by Robert Logan and Joe Porrazzo with Rain Bird. A delicious gourmet picnic of hamburgers and hot dogs was served.

T July/August 2015

Many thanks go to the John Deere Team where Tim Foraker, Ed Juba and Ermes Palacios slaved over the open flames to cook the dogs and burgers to perfection. A special thank you goes to Bill Faires and Dwight Faires with San Tan Landscape Management for donating and delivering all of the bottled water, sodas and ice. Insurance for the event was provided by the generosity of Steve Shields with Hill & Usher. Thank you to all of the sponsors and a special thank you to Bob Franchetto with Horizon who has been the Committee Chairman for decades. It is with his dedication that Field Day continues to provide an excellent opportunity for landscape contractors, members of the green industries, employees and their families to take a break from the everyday work grind and enjoy a memorable fun-filled day with fellow ALCA members. Respectfully Submitted, Judy Gausman, CEO

ALCA BULLETIN BOARD

Contracts and Your Landscape Company By Scott J. Richardson, Nussbaum Gillis & Dinner, P.C.

Most landscapers would not take a job without a contract or at least something in writing that sets forth the price, the scope, the time frame and the work to be done. But contracts in business are more than just a way to get work and get paid. They are a key component of all facets of business. Let me start with a question I often ask: “what is your biggest business asset?” I sometimes get answers like “my building” or “my equipment.” The worst answer I ever got was “my receivables.” But in reality the answer is “my customers” because without them you do not need a building, equipment, crews or products. Protecting your customers with strong employment covenants is vital. Let me explain. An employment covenant sets forth duties and responsibilities of your employee in exchange for the job. While courts have not looked with great favor on employment covenants that are broad in scope and duration, they will enforce carefully drafted covenants (i.e. contracts) which limit solicitation or even servicing of your customers for a period of time. This is a way to protect your business interest in your biggest asset - your customers. These covenants also can require certain information be kept secret and confidential. Such information must be returned upon termination of the employment, and not copied or used. This gets into the area of trade secrets. Ask yourself do I have anything of unique business value, not otherwise available that I make reasonable attempts to keep secret? If so, you may have a trade secret. Arizona has adopted the Uniform Trade Secrets Act but your employment covenant can assist in protecting such information from use. What can be a trade secret? How about a customer’s unlisted phone number? It is not available in the phone directory or from information; and it has unique value in allowing you to contact the customer. If you take steps to keep it private and secret it can qualify as a trade secret. On July 29, 2015 we will present the first of a series of four business seminars for landscapers covering the topic of contracts, employment covenants and trade secrets. We will talk about how to enforce them and what damages you can get in the case of breach. This first session is from 9:30 -12:00 at the ALCA office. You may register online at www.ALCA.org. Please join us and protect your business. Scott Richardson can be reached at (480) 609-0011.

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS

2014 Excellence in Landscaping Awards AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE Ashdown House by Sven Gunn Designs/Sonoran Gardens, Inc Single Family Residential Installation $125k - $175k This new construction project included everything but the residence, outdoor kitchen and pool/spa (Patio Pools, Inc). My design included all other areas which are: front entry paver driveway, courtyard enclosure, low water use easy care plants (strict CCR’s), drainage, lighting, rear yard perimeter wall, raised planter/seat wall behind pool, more lush plant palate, pavers, all raised planters, steps leading to and including the fireplace, all custom metal trellis’ throughout, free standing planter window boxes and gates. The fireplace was not part of the original plan, it was added and designed to help screen neighboring houses and create a cozy focal point which the owners now love. Adding the unique arched trellis also helps to screen as well as provide an opportunity for a vine to grow. The main function of this back yard for is relaxation, enjoy gardening and entertain family and friends.

The Villages at Aviano by AAA Landscape Commercial Maintenance $100k-$150k The landscape within this gated condominium community located within Aviano at Desert Ridge offers a great balance of cacti, agave, succulents, flowering shrubs, annuals and turf accents. Tree varieties include Acacia schaffneri, Hybrid Palo Verde, Acacia aneura, Palo Brea and Ironwood. It is maintained by a two man AAA Landscape crew with assistance from the contractor’s tree care division. The builder’s recent surge in sales necessitates daily detailed attention to model homes and has encouraged investment in landscape enhancements throughout the community. The abundance of large premium boulders used throughout the common areas provides great visual impact to the design. The crew does amazing work keeping up with an intense detailing schedule of dense plantings within very narrow areas while still inspecting 100% of the property and touching up models daily on top of mowing and irrigation maintenance. The residents are very appreciative and the AAA Landscape crew is very proud of their work.

AWARDS OF DISTINCTION Fritts Residence by Sustain Scape Single Family Residential Installation $50k-$75k The Fritts Residence was a grass to desert conversion for water conservation and the appreciation of the Sonoran desert surroundings. It was also important that Mr. and Mrs. Fritt’s have areas in the landscape to sit and enjoy the numerous views that their lot has to offer. Tucked up in the foothills of Troon Mountain and McDowell Mountain, this property called for three separate seating areas to be created so the family and guests could use the landscape and have great views while in the spaces. Each location was carefully picked by analyzing the best views at different points in the day and year. There are two lounge areas for catching sun and watching sunsets. There is one raised fire pit area to sit around during the winter months with beautiful views back to the raised pool. The new landscape has pathways throughout with specimen cactus alongside to give a botanical walk experience. Mounding was installed to help create interest and to delineate and emphasize the pathways that meander through the garden. Low water use, desert adaptive plants were installed to give a natural desert look and feel with minimal maintenance.

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS

Sponsored by:

AWARDS OF DISTINCTION Eneim Residence by Enchanted Garden Landscape, Inc. Single Family Residential Installation $125k - $175k This charming Spanish colonial home located in Ethel’s Garden at Silverleaf incorporates unique custom architectural and landscape details. The entry is layered from the street. Pots are utilized to display color around an architectural banco designed for this home. The raised planters flanking the entry allow specimen beds of rose gardens to unify the landscape with Ethel’s garden. Enter the main “outdoor room” to encounter a colorful fountain. The fountain is nestled by riparian waterside plants and color. Plants are positioned to shade the entry door. A lady of Guadalupe sculpture is nestled to the right of the front door. A large ironwood is the focal point of the space. At the end of the garden a fireplace, Ramada and BBQ are nestled by vines and lush plantings. Nearby are edible plants and a staircase with pots on each landing. A private garden patio provides an intimate, quiet, reflective space with stepping-stones and a fountain. There are also many fragrant plantings in the reflective garden. Every side of the home is encased by beautiful groupings of plantings for enjoyment.

Los Saguaros by Horticulture Unlimited, Inc. Commercial Installation $100k - $175k Horticulture Unlimited was hired by the master developer to implement a landscape design by a local landscape architect. The design included utilizing pieces of salvaged Palo Verdes, ocotillos, saguaros and Tortolita boulders. The boulders were integrated into and around the entry monument walls to recreate the natural landscape that is found throughout Dove Mountain. Synthetic lawn was installed on each side of the entry. The plantings at the entry monuments and into the entry gates consist of a mix of native and accent plants that provide a nice welcome to all who enter. The combination of specimen vegetation, boulders, grass and accent lighting provide a dramatic entry to a beautiful community nestled at the entrance to the Ritz Carlton and the base of the Tortolitas.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead by Native Resources, Int’l

Commercial Installation $250k - $350k

Native Resources International finalized its 18 month landscaping project at the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead in Scottsdale. Located in the McDowell Mountain Sonoran Preserve, NRI was involved in the work at the new parking lot/building at the beginning of a new trail system. A new irrigation system was installed along with plant material both new and salvaged from the site and the large importation of boulders. The landscape design incorporated plant material that matched the existing native plant palette so that it would integrate into the surround environment. The final plan was that the irrigation system would slowly be reduced over the first couple of years to help conserve water. To make the project as sustainable as possible, NRI imported salvaged trees, large shrubs and cacti from other desert sites around Maricopa County. The main focus for the landscaping was the 60 trees brought in from the Wickenburg Ranch area and the Yucca Baccata, so generously donated by Malcolm Patten at the Reserve in North Scottsdale.

2014 Excellence in Landscaping Awards AWARD OF DISTINCTION Saddlebrooke Villas Association by Northwest Landscaping, LLC Commercial Maintenance $100k-$150k Saddlebrooke Villas Association is an active adult community with over 200 patio townhomes. Because many of the residents are seasonal, it has become the task of Northwest Landscaping to educate the residents about the unique and dramatic differences of the desert southwest plant palate. The active HOA board decided to remove all of the turf and converted to a xeriscape landscape. The landscape has large expanses of open informal plantings as well as narrow walkway planter beds. The crews have the expertise to apply a formal style pruning approach where space is limited and appropriate and take into account the difference in care for the district sculptural shapes of spears and spikes that are the mainstays in our desert plant palate. Javalina are regular visitors and love to eat the acorns from the oak trees and rearrange the rock swales as they forage. Deer lay down in the shade of the trees often crushing understory plants.

Horizon We hear a lot of talk about smart irrigation products, and they are definitely an important part of our continued conservation efforts. But no matter how smart your irrigation is, if your soil isn’t healthy you will never reach maximum efficiency. Healthier soil significantly improves soil structure, which improves the absorption and retention of water in the soil. Which means you ultimately need less water to maintain healthy plants and turf. That improved structure and usage of water means less fertilizer and pesticides are required to keep the plant healthy, reducing your overall costs. So where do you start? Horizon’s Bob Franchetto spends a lot of time talking with landscape professionals about the importance of soil health, especially when living in a desert with limited resources. He suggests looking at the three main components of your soil – physical, biological, and chemical.

Physical Most of us are familiar with the physical properties of soil – clay, sand or silt. But just because your soil may not be ideal doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Turface MVP is a great solution for improving all types of soil structure. Heavy Clay Soils – These soils lack air-holding capacity preventing oxygen exchange and limiting root growth. By incorporating Turface into the root zone you will improve porosity and generate deeper roots, leading to amazing results even during dry summer months. Sandy Soils – Sand doesn’t hold enough moisture or sufficiently retain nutrients to maintain the health of most bedding plants. The added moisture-holding capacity of Turface keeps water and nutrients where they are needed and reduces the risk of drought stress over time. If you are in a situation where you can’t till in new soil, you may want to consider a soil surfactant such as Aqueduct or Dispatch. These surfactants get the water off the surface and distribute it evenly in the soil profile. Water moved deeper in to the soil is easier for plant roots to access, but also reduces evaporation, lowering overall water use.

has been overexposed to synthetic fertilizers. Apex 10 is an organic peat humic substance made from highly humified peat sources that have a variety of very active and complex materials from plant fibers and contain many active organic constituents. Using this product enhances fertilizer effectiveness, improves water efficiency, and improves overall plant health.

Chemical There’s only one way to know what is happening in your soil – a soil test. Without a soil test, we don’t know what the soil needs. Once you have that, then you know what additional micronutrients your soil needs to produce healthy, lush turf.

Turf Triage So how do you start? Horizon’s new Turf Triage is an easy solution that not only helps you improve your soil health, but helps you differentiate from the competition. It all starts with a soil test - just like getting blood work at the doctor. Bring your soil in to a local Horizon store and they will take care of the rest. Once you get the results your Horizon professional can walk you through the test and make recommendations on how to improve all three areas of your soil. Plus – they have sales tools to help you explain to your client your “turf triage” approach, positioning you as the soil expert and ensuring a healthier landscape. To learn more about Turf Triage and Soil Health, visit your local Horizon store today.

Biological Soil requires some level of microbe activity to be healthy. Soil microorganisms transform raw elements in to useful chemicals such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Iron. They increase soil fertility while suppressing pathogens that cause diseases. Soil microorganisms are living, breathing organisms and, therefore, need to eat. Their nutrients are primarily derived from the organic matter they feed upon. Humus (well decomposed organic matter) is the richest source of organic matter and may need to be replenished in the soil, especially if it July/August 2015

Belgard Hardscapes LONG LIVE ME TIME

WHY CHOOSE BELGARD PAVERS

Create your place where moments last a lifetime. This time of year can be quite hectic, with lots of end-of-school activities, vacation planning, and community events. Sometimes you just need to take a moment, take a deep breath, and relax. Shut off the world for a few minutes.

We’re the outdoor living experts. When it comes to outdoor rooms, we practically wrote the book. From stylish pavers and walls to our innovative Elements Collection Belgard leads the way in bringing the best in outdoor living to homes across America. Our promise to you: The Belgard Warranty. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that once installed by an authorized Belgard Contractor, your Belgard hardscape is warrantied for as long as you own your home and can be transferred should you sell your home at any time. Inspiration combined with craftsmanship. We provide online resources to get you thinking about which Belgard Pavers are the perfect fit for your home. Add in your Belgard Authorized Contractor – a highly trained, dedicated professional guiding your project from planning to completion – and you’ll have a hardscape that not only looks great, but will last for decades to come.

POWER OF THE SYSTEM Belgard Pavers are installed with sand filled joints not mortar; as the soil expands and contracts the pavers simply move with the soil. Pavers do not crack like asphalt or concrete. Any repairs for plumbing are easy! Belgard Pavers are slip resistant around pools. Other finishes such as stamped or stained concrete can be very slick when wet. Unlike asphalt or concrete, which need time to dry or cure once laid, pavers can be enjoyed as soon as they are installed. Belgard Pavers also offer the homeowner more color and design choices.

Shapes, colors, textures as unique as your home. Belgard offers homeowners a wider range of design possibilities than anyone else. The variety of shapes, colors and textures available makes finding the perfect paver or wall to suit your home a breeze. Belgard pavers are weather-resistant. Searing summer heat won’t faze your Belgard hardscape. The joints allow the pavers to move with any damage. Belgard pavers stand the test of time. Belgard pavers typically provide optimum performance for about 30 years - much longer than other paving materials under normal residential use. Please contact your local authorized Belgard dealer or sales representative for more information about or products or programs. Kelly O’Shaughnessy/Belgard Sales Representative (480) 352-1725

Smart Irrigation Month Win-Win When I ran track in high school, my coach always said everything twice. He always said everything twice. I guess he did that because he wanted to make sure that we were listening, that he was heard, and that we understood. I think that the same thing holds true with water management. July is “Smart Irrigation” month and it’s a great time to remind you of the different products and technologies that can help you irrigate more efficiently. You are probably aware of the severe drought affecting most of the state of California. Residents there are facing severe restrictions. Runoff from an irrigation system can result in a $500 fine. All are being asked to reduce their water usage by 25%. In many cases, the easiest way to do this is with the irrigation system. Many are simply shutting their sprinklers off. This isn’t California, but we are in a drought condition here in Arizona as well. Being proactive today with the technologies that exist will help us to prolong the types of water restrictions and punitive measures that residents of California are currently dealing with. Because of our commitment to water management, Ewing Irrigation has formed a drought response team. The team is tackling drought from many different angles, one of which is a list of simple tips. Listed below are the team’s “Top Four Drought Tips”: 1. The system must have proper pressure. Systems with too much pressure use more water, less

16

THE ALCA INFLUENCE

T July/August 2015

efficiently. System pressure is easily checked with a Hunter Pressure Gauge Adapter and pressure gauge (sprayheads) or a pitot tube and pressure gauge (rotors). Retrofit sprayheads, as needed, with pressure regulating sprayhead bodies to optimize performance. For a good visual demonstration of the effect of high pressure, please see the Ewing video “Irrigate More Efficiently With a Pressure Regulating Sprayhead” on YouTube. Also, switch to high-efficiency nozzles with low precipitation rates and you will almost double the efficiency of the sprayheads. Many Phoenix area municipalities offer rebates that will help to defray to cost of the retrofit. 2. Convert sprinkler zones to drip, where possible. Drip has the highest efficiency (approximately 90%) of any type of sprinkler because it applies water slowly, right at the plant. This helps to avoid runoff and water lost to wind drift and evaporation. There are even products that will allow you to convert a sprayhead into a point of connection for a drip irrigation retrofit. Several Phoenix area municipalities offer rebates for removing turf. 3. Increase the water holding capacity of the soil. Most soils lack sufficient organic material. Aearate and incorporate organic material or AquaSmart into the soil. AquaSmart is a sand based product with a polymer attached to it. When activated, it holds 12 times its weight in water, retaining that water and releasing it back into the soil as it is needed. Sprinkler run times

can then be gradually reduced. 4. Proper programming of the irrigation controller is essential. Consider upgrading to a smart controller that can accommodate more rigorous scheduling requirements. This is where the technology in our industry has really changed in the last few years. Smart controllers have become increasingly affordable, even at the residential level. They automatically adjust irrigation based on weather data or input from a soil moisture sensor. Controllers with the Water Sense logo saved a minimum of 20% during testing by the EPA. Several have the ability to monitor flow and react in the event of a broken line or missing head. Some allow remote access via the internet and even the use your smart phone as a remote! The cost of smart controllers can also be partially covered by municipal rebates. All of the systems installed in the last 10, 15, or 20 years are great candidates for retrofits with these new technologies. They represent a great opportunity for your company to earn additional revenue, while helping your customers water more efficiently. It’s a classic win-win. Be sure to take advantage of the many rebates that are offered to help defray the cost of the material. ARBOR DAY

The Arizona Landscape Contractors Association Celebrates Arbor Day with the City of Buckeye For the past few years, Bob Franchetto, ALCA’s Director of Community Projects, has celebrated Arbor Day with various communities by planting and staking trees and explaining their benefits. This year, residence from the City of Buckeye and its Mayor Jackie Meck, gathered around as Bob Franchetto, explained how to properly plant and care for the Fan Tex Ash at the City of Buckeye’s park. With the help of Bob’s daughter Ashley, the children enjoyed roughing up the sides to loosen the roots and digging in with their hands to fill in the hole with dirt then packing it in with their feet. After staking and watering the tree, the project was complete. The Fraxinus velutina “Fan-Tex” ash tree is a moderately to rapidly growing deciduous tree reaching 35 to 40 feet tall and wide. Its canopy is round with shiny smooth leaves instead of the velvety feel of other species. Adapted to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 through11, where average minimum temperatures stay above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, it makes a great shade or street tree. The Fan-Tex ash tree requires full sun. It can thrive in almost any type of soil, as long as it is well-drained. Once established, it is also relatively heat and drought tolerant, but performs best with regular watering. As a rule of thumb, throughout the spring and summer growing seasons, the soil around the tree should be moist, but not soaking wet. For droughts lasting two weeks or more, saturate the soil around the tree from the trunk to the edge of the canopy once a week. The Fan-Tex ash tree will grow into an attractive canopy without shaping. Prune dead, broken and diseased branches whenever you see them on the tree, making a straight cut with pruning shears right outside the raised branch collar. Make sure you leave the tree plenty of space to spread, as it does not respond well to heavy pruning. In Fall, the leaves drop quickly, making for an easy one-time rake session. Thank you to Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers for graciously donating the Fan-Tex Ash trees. Everyone in attendance was able to take home tree seedlings of Arizona’s state tree the Palo Verde compliments of Kevin Salamandra with Arid Zone Trees. The Parkinsonia florida is a species of Palo Verde native to the Sonoran Deserts of southern Arizona. Its name means “green pole or stick” in Spanish, referring to the green trunk and branches. It grows to heights of 33–39 feet and is a rapidly growing small tree. Proverbs say that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. Let’s celebrate arbor day – every day!
