PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Imagine a day when...

I

magine a day when your equipment requires no gasoline, and sometimes not even an operator. Imagine a drone delivering trimmer line or a forgotten tool to a jobsite. Imagine a significant increase in sustainable urban green spaces. Imagine a day when landscaping is viewed differently with a much higher degree of respect. According to Michelle Sordi, Husqvarna’s director of marketing, several revealing statistics include: • 56% of U.S. consumers visit a Robert Clinkenbeard park once a week ALCA President • 71% think parks will occupy a larger 2016/17 share of cities in 2030 • 78% want to see eco-friendly outdoor power equipment being used • 65% would prefer to choose a landscaper who used it • 72% would be willing to pay more for said landscaper • 57% would be willing to pay more for a landscaper who operated quieter equipment Is lawn and garden equipment technology on pace to meet this growing, in some cases shifting demand? I would say it is very close.

oil, filters, spark plugs and service labor goes out. That’s money out of the dealer’s pocket. That said, dealers would have the opportunity to generate sales dollars upfront via batteries and chargers. Perhaps dealers could even play a role in the outfitting of trailers with solar panels and other required accessories. Additionally, some dealers might be more than happy to wave bye-bye to the headaches and hassles associated with ethanol-inflicted two-cycle engine repair. Sincerely, Robert Clinkenbeard, ALCA President 2016/17

Leading landscape companies are considering shifting to batteries

Many large companies around the country are being invited to some of the leading manufacturer facilities to discuss transition to battery-powered handheld equipment. On site demos are also offered around the country to promote the new equipment on offer. As environmental concerns, labor issues and demand from clients influence our decision making, many companies have transitioned 50% of its mower fleet to propane and are converting trailers into solar-equipped “power houses” for many of their crews. There is still a lot of learning that needs to happen but that is always needed with new products, services etc. From what I understand a trailer set up with solar panels can be outfitted for around $5,000 and it is likely that you will obtain a positive ROI of several thousand dollars over 10 years. Robotic mowers are also becoming readily available and hardier for commercial use. I had the opportunity to view a demo of a mower which, confined to a specific area by electronic sensors, could be operated remotely at a set amount of hours and would operate through small, fine cuts so the grass would also look short. Production rates, machine health and other data could also be collected continuously. The solar panels are helping to keep batteries charged—batteries used to power a growing arsenal of handheld equipment. Convincing some of the crews to operate battery equipment will undoubtedly be a challenge at first because they are so entrenched in the “macho gasoline culture”. At some point this will change with crews accepting the health and environmental benefits such as reduced noise, less pollution and positive feedback from clients. For a company to go “all in” and make a 100% switch to propane and solar/electric on day one may not make sense, but a sensible strategic plan put in place over a two or three year period would reduce many of the potential risks or challenges. It’s important to understand that the transition to battery is scalable. A given trailer shows a couple thousand-dollar positive ROI over the life of the trailer. That is one trailer. If you have 10 trailers or 100 trailers then ROI dollars quickly multiply up. Thus, battery could prove to be financially viable for a smaller operator, too—perhaps even more so because the upfront investment in batteries, chargers and solar panels is considerably less. After visiting the largest landscape show (GIE) in the US last year and experiencing an increase in the number of battery powered exhibitors, I believe more landscape professionals should embrace battery technology. But it really comes down to education. Dealers can play a huge role in that, since most small to mid-size landscape companies are getting the majority of their information from the dealers which they buy. Dealers must play a very important role in the adoption of battery power for another reason: When batteries come in, the aftermarket sale of

CEO’S MESSAGE

ALCA Field Day

A

LCA hosted 200 family members of the landscape industry at the ALCA Field Day on a beautiful Saturday in April at the SRP PERA Club. With 23 sponsors hosting a variety of interactive and competitive individual and team events, everyone enjoyed the festivities, including my 10 year old granddaughter who has never missed one. And who wouldn’t want to participate in a contest for launching a tennis ball with a slingshot tied to lawn mowers aimed at targets? This creative event was hosted by Bob Franchetto and the Horizon crew. Target Specialty Products provided a golf chipping contest and Nate Gould with Hunter Industries hosted the bean bag toss. Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers held an obstacle course for the kiddos who fished out a prize from the swimming pool. Nate Wallace and Steve Carroll with Armstrong Growers tested participant’s knowledge by identifying a selection of plants used in the landscapes. Hector Albarran and Annika Jochai with Stotz Equipment held a Frisbee toss into a Bobcat challenge while Dan Harner with Belgard Superlite Block and his lovely assistant Ashley Franchetto ran a basketball free throw contest. Brandon Light and Rob Mommsen with RDO Judy Gausman Equipment hosted an excavator challenge while ALCA CEO Christopher Cole with West Coast Turf set up the croquet court for all to enjoy. Participants hauled bricks in the wheelbarrow contest which was sponsored by Joe Carranza Sunrise Nursery. All could enjoy playing some horseshoes provided by Ewing Irrigation. Roger Toon with Sunstate Equipment brought a lift and many enjoyed the 40 foot high bird’s eye view over the SRP Park. Bob Meier and the Adaptive Insurance Agency held a putting contest with a grand prize of $15,000 for the person who could sink all 3 holes. Even though it was great fun, it was a task that no one could accomplish. Paul Tammelleo with Irritrol sponsored a salsa cook-off with some fiercely hot competition. Thanks to Jim Mitchell with Rodeo Ford, children of all ages enjoyed jumping around in an inflatable bounce house. Kids and adults gravitated to the ever popular petting zoo, sponsored by Southwest Sod, where the animals received a lot of lovin’. And of course, Field Day closed with the grand finale tug ‘o war contest sponsored by Mark Carreiro with Rain Bird. Participants took home some fabulous prizes as they competed for first, second and third place. A delicious gourmet BBQ picnic was served by Tim Foraker with SiteOne Landscape Supply and Terre Caraway with Cutting Edge Curbing Sand and Rock who slaved over the open flames to cook hot dogs and burgers to perfection. For dessert, Evergreen Turf and DIRT Insurance & Risk Management brought in an ice cream truck which helped cool the crowd on the warm day. A big thank you goes to Bill Faires and Dwight Faires with San Tan Landscape Management who donated and delivered all of the bottled water, sodas and ice. Insurance for the event was provided by the generosity of Steve Shields with Hill & Usher. Trace Tolby, Brad Reno and Nancy Clawson volunteered their day at the registration table and selling raffle tickets. Thank you to all of the sponsors and a special thank you to Bob Franchetto with Horizon who has been the Committee Chairman for decades. It is with his dedication that Field Day continues to provide an excellent opportunity for landscape contractors, members of the green industries, employees and their families to take a break from the everyday work grind and enjoy a memorable fun-filled day with fellow ALCA members. Enjoy the photos! Judy Gausman

The Spurge Scourge

I

’ve often joked that spurge should be granted the dubious distinction of Arizona’s Official Groundcover as it is doubtful that any turf and landscape professional in Arizona has not encountered spurge somewhere on a property. The spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) consists of numerous species throughout the U.S. Species such as leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) are true perennial plants and are particularly problematic, especially in northern states. Others such as caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris) are biennials and thus take two years to complete their life-cycle. For discussion purposes, the ensuing article will consider Arizona spurges found in turf and landscape as annuals. Species commonly found in Arizona include ground spurge, sometimes referred to as prostrate spurge (Euphorbia prostrata), hyssop spurge (Euphorbia hyssopifolia), spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata) and creeping spurge (Euphorbia serpens). These species reproduce by seed but some also root at the nodes making them difficult to remove. Some species such as hyssop are more erect in their growth habits while others are more lateral. Lateral growers are far more common in turf and often survive low mowings. As such, spurge control and management in turf and landscape is a major challenge in Arizona for three reasons: 1. They are prolific seed producers. Spurge’s capacity to establish a robust “seedbank” is well documented. A single plant can produce several thousand seeds; thus, most turf and landscapes in Arizona are contaminated to some degree. 2. They regenerate (germinate and establish) very quickly. Spurge seed can germinate and emerge in less than 2 weeks and produce offspring within 5 weeks of germination. Further, buried spotted spurge seed may remain viable for up to 50 years! 3. Arizona’s extended growing season provides ideal conditions for weeds. In the case of spurge, like many plants, soil temperature dictates when it will germinate and when it will enter dormancy. In the Phoenix area, new spurge germination is typically found in early March; however, our mild climate allows for an extended growing period into late fall/early winter. It can readily be seen alongside the edge of a sidewalk or golf cart path where heat radiation warms the surrounding soil. A hard frost is generally required to interrupt the life cycle of this pesky weed. From a control perspective, spurge clearly presents a formidable challenge. Proper irrigation, timely fertilization and mowing schedule are but a few procedures where attentive management

can yield big dividends. As I often share with turf customers, “healthy turf is the best weed control.” Weeds are opportunistic; provide them thin, weak turf and they will exploit the situation. Vital to such management are cultural practices. Although hand or mechanical This single spurge plant was found in a golf fairway. removal of spurge can Note writing pen for scale. be effective, it is critical to perform the task early, well before seed development. It is all too common to remove spurge by hand only to see new plants replace the voided area within a few short weeks. It should also be 2017 Calendar of Events noted that the white, milky, latex sap that spurge produces during stem breakage is a skin irritant. 2016 Excellence in Landscaping Awards The Pond Gnome Special Water Feature Residential Installation Jachimek Residence The front courtyard of this Scottsdale residence is home to two pet turtles and a dozen large Koi who live in a very exclusive pond environment. At the request of the client, The Pond Gnome designed the water feature around several mature pine trees in the courtyard. A 300-foot stream is fed by two waterfalls, which completely conceal the biological filters necessary to maintain the water quality and clarity. The stream provides these lucky turtles with plenty of forage, the hand fed Koi with an abundance of oxygenated water, and the homeowners and their guests a relaxing atmosphere on the patio with a mountain creek-like ambiance. The mechanical filtration system is specifically designed to effectively and efficiently skim and remove the constant onslaught of tannin-producing pine needles making this living water feature easy to maintain.

This fabulous European home has a beautifully unique widespread courtyard surrounded with a variety of gorgeous vibrant and colorful plants. The blue flagstone steppingstone walkway leads you through the dark green blades of grass from the front gate past the romantic Tuscan water fountain. The walkway wraps through the courtyard and ends with 3 half circled steps constructed by artisans with reclaimed brick in a variety of colors that showcases their beautifully adorned front door. The courtyard is full of luscious green foliage with climbing red and white roses that surround the pillars and exquisite Lady Banks roses atop the pergola. The pool fence also has climbing white Lady Banks roses to create the feel of a Mediterranean oasis as well as provides privacy from its neighboring lots. The two large mesquite trees are surrounded by flowers and offer shade while enjoying the pool.

Located in Glendale, Arrowhead Ranch Phase V is a beautiful subdivision of 1,758 homes. The landscaped common areas contain approximately 28.3 acres of turf and 47.7 acres of decomposed granite and bedding areas supported by 26 irrigation controllers. The community contains 6 ramadas, 4 tot lots, a basketball court, and a volleyball court, all of which are part of our landscape maintenance contract. Since 2012, Stillwater has been successfully implementing a seasonal renovation program for all shrubs in the community. This program has yielded excellent results, as plants are allowed to reach their full flowering potential each season before they are renovated to encourage new growth. By rotating over-seeded turf areas each year, they have been able to improve the overall health of the bermudagrass and the community has realized significant water savings. Our proactive fertilization and cultural practices have allowed us to consistently provide the community residents with lush turf areas throughout the year.

Included in this project were removals, grading, and custom aesthetic site amenities such as pedestrian node with shade, pavers, and seating. The plant pallet consists of primarily desert, sustainable species and included some salvage specimens. The project transformed the worn down segment into a highly functional, safe, and visually appealing multiuse connector. The Town of Paradise Valley used this project as the impetus to create new “visually significant corridor guidelines to serve as the groundwork for future roadway development in the area.

It’s Smart Irrigation Month!

Show the Savings

Don’t just talk about the savings, show them. There are a number of smart water calculators available from manufacturers and distributors that allow you to enter real-world data like cost of water per gallon, number of heads, etc. The tools are easy to use and can be entered and calculated in about 2 minutes.

Know the Water District Rebates Available in Your Area

As

irrigation and landscape professionals, you know the benefits of using smart water products - reduction in water usage, healthier soil, and lower water bills. But often the hardest part is talking to your clients about why this makes sense for them. While phrases like “distribution uniformity” and “precipitation rates” are common to us, it can be difficult to translate to a homeowner. Here are some suggestions for talking “smart” to your clients.

Many city and county water districts offer water-saving rebate programs for EPA WaterSense labeled products as well as water conservation services. But sometimes these programs can be a little confusing and even intimidating. By becoming familiar with the programs in your area you just increased your value to your client and helped differentiate yourself from your competitors. A complete reference for all the local rebates is available on http://www.horizononline.com/ resources-and-training/water-rebates

It’s Not All About Money

Fortunately for most of us, water is still inexpensive. So a typical urban home won’t see the Use Visuals They Can financial impact like a community association or Understand Changing out 10 sprays to PRS heads can save office campus. But all of us know that many states up to 30,000 gallons of water a year. Sounds like are facing drought issues and that we all have to a lot. Or is it? That number is pretty intangible. do our part to conserve. And most homeowners So use it in a context your client will understand. don’t realize how much of their water is being used Instead, try “that’s like filling up your pool twice outside of the house. Use the graphics provided by organizations like WaterSense to show that up to a year!” That’s something they can relate to. HALF of their water usage is outside.

Lawns Are Not Evil

Many areas facing drought are going to the extreme of pulling up turf and replacing with hardscaping or artificial turf. And while these are both valid options, temperatures around grassy areas are about 25 degrees cooler than around dead grass or concrete, while removing CO2, dust, and other contaminants from the atmosphere. It’s important to remind clients of the benefit of healthy landscapes around their house while assuring them that with Smart Water products you can maintain that beauty with less water.

Horizon has compiled the industry’s best contractor-to-homeowner selling tools to help you have the Smart Water conversation with your clients. West Coast Turf/Western Sod Quality, Service, and the Newest State-of-the-Art Eco-Friendly Turfgrasses

W

est Coast Turf/Western Sod (WCT/WS) is undoubtedly the most famous face in Arizona’s turfgrass industry. We offer top professional quality natural turfgrass and installation services to all of our customers, whether they are the head groundskeeper of Chase Field needing a field grown to his specs, a landscape contractor wanting the best product at the best price, or a homeowner looking for the newest environmentally friendly lawn. We also offer same day easy pick-up’s at our Scottsdale farm.

The EXCITING Stuff...!

WCT/WS has been the official supplier to Chase Field and the D-backs since day #1. Everyone can have that same grass the MLB players enjoy. “We get several calls every day about BOBSod. People want THAT grass at Chase Field,” said WCT/WS’s Jay Danek.

The Latest State-of-the-Art Grasses and the “Good Ol’ Standby’s”

Environmentally friendly turfgrasses are vital to the future of the industry, and our answer is Platinum T.E. paspalum. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time, and I haven’t seen a grass out there better for our desert,” Danek explained. “It can reduce your budget because it can stay green 4-6 weeks longer in the fall, and greens up a month earlier.” “We’ve also expanded our inventory of St. Augustine, and our popular EZ-Turf, both of which have been around for years,” Danek said.

Chapman has been in the commercial truck business for over 30 years, and we’re still family owned and operated. That means you can count on an old-fashioned commitment to quality, service and caring. Things that seem to be missing in business lately. But at Chapman, we’ve always placed a higher value on reputation than on finances. Maybe that’s why we’ve got the highest customer service index in Arizona. We lease and sell the best commercial vehicles available. We back them up with the best customer service in the Valley, including dedicated commercial service facilities. Plus, we respect and appreciate your bottom line, so we make the deal fit. And we do it all with a big smile and a warm handshake. Yes, you can buy or lease a truck anywhere. But there’s only one Chapman Experience.

And Mr. Wise Grass—Our Sod Blog...

Danek has been roped into his role as our resident “Mr. Wise Grass.” His blog “Ask Mr. Wise Grass” (found at http://mrwisegrass.com) offers turf advice, tips, insights, and answers. “I am passionate about grass, and I love helping people get their lawns in top condition,” Danek said. Sky Blu Golf Tournament

T

he Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association held its annual golf tournament at the FireRock Country Club in Fountain Hills on Thursday, May 4, 2017. For decades, ALCA has been awarding qualified individuals who are serious about furthering their formal education in the Green Industry. The Green Industry Scholarship is funded by proceeds from the Sky Blu Underwood Golf Tournament. This year, the event recognized proceeds in the amount of over $9,000. Sky Blu Underwood was born in Phoenix in 1974 and was raised around the landscape industry. He often worked for his father during the summers at AAA Landscape. His roots were deeply entwined with the agricultural industry. Unfortunately, Sky did not live long enough to fulfill his dreams. This scholarship fund has been established to help other young people build their careers. Perhaps applicants can use their education to beautify the world with trees, flowers, and other green things...and carry on one of Sky’s dreams. With a full course of 144 players competing, the lowest score of 51 and taking the 1st place prize went to the Rodeo Ford team consisting of Jim Mitchell, Mike Dean, Paul Bruccoleri and Larry Walton. In second place was the Rain Bird team consisting of Robert Logan, Chris Padget, DeWayne Thompson and Alex Clayton. Coming in 3rd place was Chad Johnson, Brian Huhta, Tim Barber and Scott Sipe. The big winner of the putting contest was Todd Huston with Grounds Control for a night stay and twosome of golf at the Gold Canyon Resort which was generously donated by Smiling Dog Landscapes. A special congratulation to Tim Foraker with SiteOne Landscape Supply for winning closest to the pin…..with a hole-in-one! Thank you to Kelly O’Shaughnessy, Nancy Clawson, Hope Lyon, Monte Hoskins, Mary Clanton, Lisa Popour, Becky Nunes, and Nickie Velten for volunteering to help with the registration and specialty holes. ack To Nature Landcare Inc. celebrated their four-year anniversary in April with friends and family at their new facility. Co-Owners, Dave Londen and Matthew Edgar, moved their operation earlier this year and purchased their new work home located at 1354 South 39th Avenue in Phoenix. Matthew Edgar started All Seasons Lawn Care shortly after graduating from Business School at Arizona State University. With a truck, trailer, and two employees, the company serviced multi-family apartment communities in the Phoenix metro area. With a dedication to customer service and quality work, the company quickly grew. Over the past 14 years, the company developed and expanded to handle homeowners’ associations, business parks, condominium communities, retail centers and medical plazas. The biggest key to their success was the quality of their team members. To further their landscape abilities, the company added owner/partner Dave Londen in 2013. Dave brought over three decades of landscape knowledge and an understanding of sustainable landscaping to the organization. With his experience and commitment to customer satisfaction, the company added services to give value to communities through improved practices. To reflect this change, the company was reorganized as Back to Nature Landcare Inc. Today, they are extremely proud of the many team members who have helped them achieve unprecedented success. Many of them have been together for the last 12-14 years and they look forward to many more years to come. Questions: Contact the ALCA office at (602) 626-7091 or email Kasey@ALCA.org

Additionally, National Processing Solutions believes in giving back, which is why Erik championed the NPS Gives Program. 20% of THEIR profits are given to an organization you want to support, connecting you as an honorary donor to local missions. 92% of consumers will choose a business because of their social responsibility, and participating in the NPS Gives program serves just that. Improve overall brand awareness, be connected to community, and engage in a solution that can save you money. ENGINEERED TO SAVE WATER

Rotor - Multi-stream, multi-trajectory technology cuts through wind and reduces misting.

MP Rotator ®

Arc ring - The MP Rotator provides the widest range of coverage with matched precipitation at any arc and radius.

Spring - The patented double-pop feature keeps the nozzle free of external debris for increased reliability. Nozzle - The MP Rotator’s low application rate prevents runoff and conserves water.

10 years, 32 billion gallons of water saved. That’s quite an accomplishment! After a decade with Hunter Industries, we’re proud that the MP Rotator remains the most efficient sprinkler nozzle available today. That’s because the MP Rotator’s slow application rate allows water to gently soak into the soil, with an even distribution of water throughout the irrigated area. This results in 30% less water use when compared to traditional sprays.
