PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I

had the honor of attending the NALP (National Association of Landscape Professionals) leadership forum recently and it was great to represent ALCA and to network with industry leaders and to catch up on issues and trends facing landscape companies. The organizers of the forum usually collaborate with sponsors, board members and industry experts to develop a theme for the event and then bring in speakers and hold workshops. The theme Robert Clinkenbeard normally covers either upcoming trends, issues ALCA President facing the industry or hot topics. I will provide 2016/17 more details about these items in one of my future messages but in the meantime, I wanted to share one of the main initiatives which NALP has launched to help our industry especially since it touches on many issues we face on a weekly basis. While the landscape industry is diverse, the primary needs of its professionals are not – landscape operators need employees and businesses want to grow. NALP understands these needs and have responded with an aggressive growth agenda. Through the Industry Growth Initiative, NALP will grow the industry and its workforce by strengthening Americans’ appreciation of outdoor spaces where they live, work, and play. We want to show the public what we already know – that life and life’s work are best enjoyed outdoors. In the months, ahead, NALP will execute a variety of PR strategies to ensure our voice is heard. A few examples:

ARIZONA WHOLESALE GROWERS “Growing Forward” since 1982

Now with nearly 150 acres of premier growing facilities we are providing the Valley with the widest selection of shrubs, trees, ornamentals, small and specimen size Agaves, Aloes, cacti and succulents. We know that for you, Time is Money, so we are focused on improving your purchasing experience; with an expanded pre-pulled order area, increased delivery capacity, and enhanced ‘Plant Locator’ services to find the plants you need even if we don’t have them in stock.

Arizona Wholesale Growers 24032 N. 19th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85085 (623) 581-3100

Suncrest Nursery 4204 E. Lone Mountain Rd. Cave Creek, AZ 85331 (480) 488-1968

To Grow the Workforce

• Create a career-focused website speaking to students, career changers, veterans and others with excellent workforce potential • Launch a job board • Produce videos that showcase career opportunities • Sponsor content about industry career opportunities in business media outlets • Bring attention to industry careers through advertising and active social media outreach • Engage in a media campaign NALP’s Industry Growth Initiative will harness the power of media and public relations to tell the story of the incredible career opportunities that exist within the industry.

To Grow the Industry

• Strengthen our media campaign to showcase the industry and the value it provides, building on the 200+ million impressions earned already • Produce videos that reinforce expertise of industry professionals • Protect the industry’s reputation when activists attempt to speak for us • Place articles in magazines targeted at business owners in various vertical markets • Conduct research to better understand consumers’ needs and gather data to educate the public about the industry • Increase social media outreach NALP’s Industry Growth Initiative will provide the visibility, the voice, and the results the industry has long sought. Since we have the same challenges and opportunities in Arizona with a high appreciation of outdoor spaces combined with higher than average growth rates and the struggle to find a workforce to support this growth, we need to act quickly. I believe ALCA needs to look long and hard at how we can support this initiative either though financially supporting the NALP Growth Initiative, acting independently or perhaps a combination of efforts. I encourage you to share your thoughts either directly with me, other Board members or Judy Gausman. Sincerely, Robert Clinkenbeard, ALCA President 2016/17

CEO’S MESSAGE

Desert Tree Farm’s Vegetable Garden Feeds Many at St. Vincent de Paul

T

he Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to feeding, clothing, housJudy Gausman ing and healing individuals ALCA CEO and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help. As important, they provide meaningful opportunities for volunteers to serve their neighbors in need and ALCA member Desert Tree Farm has been doing just that for more than five years. John Augustine, owner of Desert Tree Farm, has reserved an acre and a half on the 81 acre farm in South Phoenix to grow winter and summer vegetables. I was able to sample the naturally grown winter produce which consists of kale, carrots, cilantro, cauliflower, beets, onions, bok choy, leeks, spinach, garlic, and a large variety of lettuce that is made available to the 90 employees and surrounding neighbors. The remaining hundreds and hundreds of pounds of produce is donated to St. Vincent de Paul. With 340 days of growing season, the same recipients enjoy the summer crop of tomatoes, an assortment of peppers, squash, cucumbers, and many types of melons. The food program at St. Vincent de Paul has always been dependent on charitable donations and the service of community members who staff the largest commercial kitchen in the United States. The local staff set a goal of a weekly delivery of 1000 pounds of fresh produce. David Smith, chief operations officer for St. Vincent de Paul (and former Maricopa County manager) manages their very own garden which provides a large supplement to the donated items.

It’s not just the employees and David Smith hard at work collecting the produce, it’s a family affair. What better way for John’s grandchildren to learn where food comes from than to give them a knife and have them pitch-in.

ALCA LANDSCAPING AWARDS

2016 Excellence in Landscaping Awards Awards of Excellence

Back to Nature Landcare, Inc. Commercial Maintenance $20K-$30K The Villas at Desert Camp The Villas at Desert Camp is a Home Owners Association located in the DC Ranch Development of Scottsdale, AZ. The HOA consists of 30 exclusive homes inside a gated community. Back to Nature Landcare, Inc. maintains the common area landscaping including front yards, common area turf, wall paths, NOAS area, and homeowner lawns. The landscape pallet of The Villas at Desert Camp consist of low water use, desert landscaping shrubs and trees per DC Ranch guidelines. These include palo verde, ironwood, and mesquite trees as well as brittlebush shrubs, saguaro cactus, and silver spoon agaves. Back to Nature maintains a sustainable natural look throughout the community which “adds value natures’ way”. In all, the community is an excellent example of what can be achieved through adherence to sustainable landscape practices. Back to Nature Landcare, Inc. is proud to be a partner in the community’s success.

Caretaker Landscape and Tree Management Commercial Maintenance $55K-$90K Boulders North The Boulders North is a Golf Resort Community on the north half of the Master Homeowner Association. Located at the far north end of Scottsdale Road, the association is made up of 324 homes, two large community pools and several large common areas. There are 90 large common areas throughout the community. When we began, we knew we would have to come up with innovative solutions for sustainable landscape management. Educating the board was the first of our priorities; secondly we instituted rejuvenation cutbacks on all the plant material per ALCA guidelines. Thirdly we have reduced landscape waste by utilizing a green waste facility thereby reducing the carbon footprint in the local landfills.

Caretaker Landscape and Tree Management Commercial Maintenance Over $500K Anthem at Merrill Ranch Caretaker Landscape and Tree Management has been working with the developers and the property management team at Anthem at Merrill Ranch transitioning into a sustainable and healthy landscape maintenance practice. Along with proper pruning practices of plants and trees, Caretaker has identified and implemented strategies to reduce and conserve water through proper irrigation practices all while maintaining plant and turf health. We have accomplished these tasks several ways: rejuvenation cut-backs to the plant at the appropriate times of the year, using the appropriate plant materials for the location where plants are replaced, monitoring the irrigation system’s water usage and identifying ways to further reduce demands, ensuring proper calibration of equipment to limit over-fertilization and over-spraying of pesticides, mechanically removing weeds when possible to further limit the amount of pesticide usage, and lastly ensuring that all parties involved are properly educated about the importance of sustainable landscape practices, whether it’s through community demonstrations, one-on–one talks with residents or simply letting the healthy, beautiful landscaping be a demonstration on its own.

ALCA SAFETY

Male Hispanic Workers Most Likely to Suffer from Ladder, Fall Injuries

F

alls are a common workplace hazard, with falls from ladders being especially dangerous to workers. The highest number of these injuries are among male and Hispanic workers, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to a NIOSH report, falls are the biggest factor in worker deaths in the United States, as 43% of fatal falls during the past 10 years involved a ladder. Along with the fatalities, more than 15,000 nonfatal injuries from falls occur in which employees have to take one or more days off work, the NIOSH report stated, and an estimated 34,000 nonfatal injuries were treated in emergency departments. Workers in the construction industry have the greatest chance of suffering fall injuries, as 81% of these employees were treated for falls from a ladder. In addition to construction, falls related to occupations connected to extraction, installation, maintenance and repair were the most fatal and had high work-related ladder fall injuries. Breaking down falls by demographics, the NIOSH report showed men and Hispanics were more likely to have fatal and nonfatal ladder fall injuries than women, non-Hispanic workers and other races and ethnicities. Age also was a significant factor in occupational fall injuries, as the likelihood of falls from ladders rose as age increased. According to NIOSH, the median number of days taken off from work for employees ages 45 to 54 years was 25 days.

In addition to productivity loss, fall injuries contribute to a growing expense for businesses. According to NIOSH, occupational fall incidents accumulate to an estimated $70 billion in workers compensation costs and medical expenses in the United States. About half of all fatal injuries involved a head injury and the leading types of injury were ones linked to the upper and lower extremities. Workers with lower-extremity injuries were out of work for 22 days while those who had injuries to several body parts were absent for 27 days. Safety tips and resources to prevent fall injuries you can share with your members • Make your insureds aware of the top hazards associated with fall incidents in the workplace, including: • Walking or working surfaces that are slippery or cluttered • Edges that do not have guards to prevent falls • Wall openings or holes in the floor where workers can fall • Ladders that are not positioned safely • Fall protection that is not used properly Suggest to your members that they may want to plan ahead to avoid using ladders or having workers do a job at heights. Businesses may implement safety-in-design and have staff perform as much work on the ground as they can. They also may want to use equipment alternatives to ladders that may be safer to operate. These may include aerial lifts or supported scaffolds. For more tips on falls or on ladder safety, CopperPoint has a free SafetyNet video at copperpoint.com, and we have several safety cards devoted to both topics, which can be ordered off the Safety Materials Order Form available to download on our website. Drab to Fab Backyard Rehab Landscape Installation

L

ast April, Water – Use It Wisely, working with ABC15’s Sonoran Living Live, embarked on a spring media promotion and contest. The prize? A landscape installation package valued at $8,000! Wanting to work with the green industry on the project, and (we admit) to also get some monetary assistance for the winning package, Water – Use It Wisely invited the Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association (ALCA), Arizona Nursery Association (ANA) and Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply to participate as partners. During the April to May media promotion and contest timeframe, Blaine Mugleston from Integrated Landscape Management talked about how to install a landscape and how to hire landscape professionals. We also had Warren Gorowitz from Ewing Irrigation talk about the importance of well-designed irrigation for a water-efficient landscape. The contest was an incredible success, yielding 10,901 entries! What a testament to how many Valley homeowners are out there who would like to rehab their backyard. And, one lucky homeowner, Lisa O. from Avondale, was the winner. Lisa was great to work with and was also willing to share the process of installing her beautiful new Xeriscape landscape with others. With that in mind, Water – Use It Wisely jumped on the opportunity to create a video series highlighting the process of turning Lisa’s backyard from drab to fabulous! The 10-part series features five to six-minute segments that explain the stages such as evaluating the yard and determining homeowner desires, visiting a Xeriscape demonstration garden and a local nursery to learn about plants, finding the right irrigation design and technology to incorporate, where to go to select hardscape elements, plant placement considerations and proper planting techniques, how to maintain plants properly and more. The project brought in additional generous partners from the three organizations. ALCA members, Janet Waibel from Waibel & Asssociates jumped in to assist with design and Marty Monroy from Cutting Edge Curbing Sand and Rock supplied the pavers and generously donated the rock. ICPI’s membership includes producers, contractors, suppliers, design professionals and distributors. Ewing Irrigation has been a member of ICPI since 2009. Cravath has been active with a number of key ICPI initiatives during this time and has worked in the hardscape industry for 15 years. He is passionate about helping others uncover potential in their hardscape projects. “I love to see the transformation of an under-utilized area of property into the center-piece gathering spot that owners are proud to show off and can enjoy for many years to come,” Cravath said.
