PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Can you believe it’s already March 2022? Time waits for NO ONE!
F
irst off, I would like to thank everyone that attended the 2021 awards gala. Most importantly, thank you to all that took time to submit your beautiful projects. In the coming publications of the ALCA Influence you will be treated to a review of all our winners. I would also like to mention, we had our Best Ever Silent Auction! A Big THANK YOU to Beth Postma with All Season Wholesale Growers and her committee for putting this together. I would like to announce that ALCA is stronger than ever and we are being recognized as a true professional trade organization. Being in the Top 10 Trade Organizations in the state as published in the Business Journal was and is a true honor. Our membership committee is working diligently to improve our awareness through social media. Welcoming our new membership committee member Daniel Baiza with Top Quality Lawn and Grounds Service, he will be taking on the weekly updating of our Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter accounts. He will prove to be very handy in getting our messages out and assist with increasing our membership. If you currently do not follow these, sign up and watch the new content that will be forth coming. On the note of membership, it should be ALL of our responsibilities to promote ALCA to non-members. Protecting our trade through well managed training events and assistance in preparing individuals to be ROC licensed is paramount. Staying up to date on governmental changes that affect us all are just some of the benefits ALCA brings to its members. And may I remind everyone, GET OUT AND VOTE! Election time will be here before you know it. The only way to make change is to change the local leadership that is not fulfilling their roles for the will of the people. We will be electing a new Governor this year along with many other positions. I have to believe that our membership has influential votes exceeding 26,000. That is enough to make a huge impact on local elections. We have a busy calendar again this year with all of our training events, mixers, and special events. Next up will be our Trade Show which will be held on March 23 this year at the Para Club. In addition to the trade show, we will also have at the same time our First Ever Cool Car Show! This sadly was canceled in 2020 due to Covid. Many of you have asked for us to bring this back on the calendar so here we go. For those that have one, get your ride all polished up and ready to show off at this event. We will be grilling food and have a bar for refreshments. This is a great way to get the latest news on new products that could improve your business and see some cool rides. We will have equipment, nurseries, distributors, OEM representatives, and much more for you to view. Over 70 vendors in all.
I have survived my second bout with Covid and I hope and pray that all of you are well and busy! Until Next Time Dwight Faires ALCA President Dwight Faires 2021 ALCA President

CEO’S MESSAGE
Right To Speak
W
e are in the middle of the Arizona legislative session. Last year, 90 elected lawmakers introduced a record breaking 1,774 bills and more were introduced this year. ALCA has partnered with Arizonans for Fair Contracting (AFC), a grassroots organization that works closely with state legislators to identify the solutions necessary to improve state law for Arizona contractors. This is a joint collaboration between the former Arizona Sub Contractors Coalition (ASCC) that merged with AFC to form a stronger entity with larger numbers than ever before. The best way to have a voice at the state capitol is through the “Right to Speak” (RTS) system. As lawmakers debate and vote on hundreds of bills, they will refer to the RTS system as it displays the entire list of individuals who have registered their Judy Gausman position and any comments on a particular bill. ALCA CEO This list gives lawmakers an idea of who supports the bill and who opposes it. Meeting each month with our lobbyist, DeMenna & Associates, AFC is concentrating on Arizona state issues including the following: • Prevailing Wage – AFC is diligently working to oppose efforts to establish prevailing wage requirements. Arizona contractors already pay higher wages and offer some form of workforce development programs. Imposing a prevailing wage would only create undue burdens on companies, hurt small businesses and increase construction costs. • SB 1271 Proportional liability & risk transfer – AFC Successfully worked to ensure that residential contractors pay only their fair share of a loss on a job site. We are now focused on preserving proportional liability in Arizona law. • Workforce Training – AFC is working to identify solutions to address the lack of skilled workers. • Registrar of Contractors – AFC is working with the ROC addressing concerns with individuals knowingly hiring unlicensed contractors and then reporting them to the ROC after work is complete to become eligible for restitution. • TPT Simplification – AFC supports simplifying Arizona’s construction sales tax by moving to a “point of purchase” system. Voicing your support for or opposition to a bill is critical. You may receive a “call to action” from ALCA asking for your support to contact your legislators. This is where the RTS system comes in. It can make the difference between getting votes to go in our favor or not. Each legislator reads these to weigh out where public opinion sits. How do you use the RTS system? If you do not already have an account, you must physically go to the Arizona State Capitol. When you arrive, the legislative staff will help you create an account and sign in on one of the kiosks in either the House or Senate. Can’t make it to the Capitol? Our lobbyist, DeMenna Public Affairs can register for you. Simply send your name and email address to Maegan Johnson (maegan@demenna.com). Maegan will create your account and send you your login information, which will allow you to remotely update your password and complete your RTS profile. With an RTS account in place, you will be able to officially register your position on bills advancing through the legislative process. It is ALCA’s mission to keep you informed and engaged as legislation impacts the construction industry. This is your chance to get involved in the legislative process and ensure that Arizona contractors have a united voice at our state capitol. Sincerely, Judy Gausman

The only cacti possibly native to the Old World are found in the genus Rhipsalis, found in East Africa, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. Cacti can be distinguished from other succulents by the presence of areoles: small, cushion like structures with trichomes (hair-like) and in almost all species, spines (highly modified leaves) and on a few species, glochids (barbed bristles found on Chollas and Prickly pears – Ouch!). Areoles are modified stems from which flowers, more stems or leaves may grow. In most cacti species, leaves are absent, greatly reduced or highly modified. Stems instead of leaves are the primary sites for photosynthesis and water storage. These stems also establish the overall shape of the mature plant. The root systems are mainly thin, fibrous and shallow, spreading widely to absorb “Growing Forward” since 1982 superficial moisture. While cacti may grow in rainforests, mountains and deserts, they prefer well-draining, gritty or sandy soils. Non cacti succulents typically have leaves that may be swollen and “juicy” or thick and leathery looking. The leaves and stems may have spines or thorns (modified stems) or prickles (corky projections arising from dermal tissue). Leaves, stems or roots or a combination serve as water storage organs to insure survival under arid conditions. The mature structure of most non cacti succulents is determined by the shape and arrangement Now with nearly 150 acres of premier growing facilities we are of their leaves as opposed to their stems as is found with cacti. hat does it take to develop a cultivar that thrives in our harsh urban Southwest environment? To scratch the surface, it starts with trial and error, scrutiny, and research. At Civano Growers, we strive to breed and introduce cultivars that can handle our environmental extremes. Poor soil, reflective heat, intense sun, monsoonal rains, and freezing temperatures are just some of the hurdles that Civano Originals must overcome. After over 20 years of introducing, trialing, and breeding plants for Southwest urban landscapes, Civano is sharing these cultivars with fellow growers. This gives residential customers and landscapers access to specialty cultivars developed for the urban landscape. Growers will have the option to choose from several sizes that best suit their needs. Shrubs and perennials are available in 72-cell trays or the new six-pack Shrub Shifter™ tray. Trees are available in 28-cell Mini Shifter™ trays and 8-cell Tree ShifterⓇ trays. Propagated at the Tucson farm, these cultivars can be finished by growers at their facilities all over the Southwest - from Southern California to Austin and from Las Vegas to Albuquerque. In the last two years, Civano has introduced two new groundbreaking Leucophyllum (Texas Sage) cultivars that have exceeded all expectations. The first is ‘San Antonio Rose’, which is an improvement on the traditional ‘Compacta’. ‘San Antonio Rose’ touts a larger, more robust flower, a compact growth habit, and tolerates standing water. The second is ‘Purple Rain’, which is a blend of the Chihuahuan Rain Sage and ‘Heavenly Cloud’. ‘Purple Rain’ establishes much easier in the landscape than its parents but retains their best attributes. Civano Grower’s new Desert Willow selections have truly knocked it out of the park. The ‘Sweet Bubba’ Seedless has an upright, uniform growth habit with deep burgundy flowers that emerge from pearl white buds. ‘Bubba Jones’ has a vigorous growth habit and produces a large pink flower. It is by far the most floriferous of any Desert Willow. The Joan Lionetti Texas Live Oak (Quercus virginiana ‘Joan Lionetti’) is perfect for any urban streetscape in an arid environment. The original seed was sourced from Central Texas over 18 years ago. Each tree is cloned from the original, ensuring that every tree will maintain the same compact growth habit it was selected for. Its dense canopy is expected to reach a 30 ft expanse within 15 years. Asclepias are some of the best pollinator plants available but can be untidy looking in the landscape. Civano Growers has developed two cultivars to answer the challenge. Asclepias subulata ‘Butterfly Magic’ has velvet

grey leaves and large white flowers. Asclepias linaria ‘Monarch Magnet 2.0’ has a compact shape, green feathery leaves, and prolific flowers. Both introductions are superior nectar and host plants for indigenous fauna and soften any landscape design. New for 2022, the ‘Orange Crush’ Desert Globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua ‘Orange Crush’) is one of Civano Grower’s best cultivars. Landscapers and residential customers alike will enjoy the extended bloom cycle and its superior compactness - only growing up to 1½ ft tall and 2½ ft wide. Growers can expect it to fill the container quickly with very little effort. Civano Growers isn’t stopping there. This year, keep an eye out for a Baja Fairy Duster hybrid and a new dwarf Leucophyllum; both are sure to impress. Civano Growers will continue to develop innovative plant cultivars that are attractive, functional, and tough as nails. Our founder, King W. Ewing, was just a boy when Atlas Lawn Sprinkler opened in San Francisco in 1922. He joined the irrigation system installation, design, and distribution company in 1938 as a salesman and installer, working his way up to lead design and sales efforts. In 1948, King acquired Atlas’ design and supply division, renamed it Ewing Turf Products, and began laying the foundation for what has become the country’s largest family-owned wholesale supplier of green industry products. King’s business philosophy—“Treat your customers right. The best advertising you can have is a satisfied customer.”—was simple but highly effective and remains so to this day. When King passed the torch to his daughter and son-in-law—Sue and Ray York—in 1963, they adopted his commitment to customer service. Together, they built on the foundation King provided, establishing a new company headquarters in San Leandro, California, and expanding Ewing’s partnerships and product offerings. In 1967, they changed the company’s name to Ewing Irrigation Products Inc. to reflect its full-line product focus. Sue and Ray then focused on growing Ewing’s footprint. In 1985, Ewing opened its Phoenix branch, the company’s 12th location. Expanding into Arizona was a momentous milestone in
In 2001, Sue and Ray passed the torch and their commitment to customer service to Doug and his brother, Richard A. York—the third generation of family members to lead the company. As President and CEO, Doug has continued to foster Ewing’s expansion. Today, Ewing operates more than 230 branches in 28 states, and plans to open more locations. Initially named Ewing’s Chief Operating Officer, Richard became President and COO of Landscape Products in 2016. Doug’s son, Jack York, became the fourth generation of family members to join the company and learn the operation from the ground up when he opened Ewing’s Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, branch in 2018. In 2020, Jack returned home to Phoenix to serve as National Irrigation Product Manager. In 2021, he was promoted to Director of Product Line Management. Ewing has experienced many changes in our 100 years—innovation, expanding territories, new locations, ever-increasing product offerings, advanced technologies, and a growing team of employees whose knowledge is eclipsed only by their commitment to providing exemplary service. wholehearted contribution made to the ongoing success of SiteWorks: Our Coworkers”. They went on to say that “it was necessary to start transitioning the company as we began to consider our ensuing retirement years, and after declining two highly attractive offers to sell the company to strategic buyers, we knew we would be wrongfully settling and ‘selling out’ our coworkers, many who made career commitments to join us back when we modestly started in December 2004”. Furthering their thoughts, they stated “we felt there was nothing improper about selling to an outside buyer, however after our research it appeared that very few seller transactions are beneficial to those who are left behind. Therefore, instead of one day looking back and feeling disappointed, we thought to instead focus
on what is ahead and establish something wonderful for those that we cared about. To us, it was a matter of taking less to do more.” “All such thinking played into our connected thought process, therefore it was easy for us to unanimously begin the 8-month process to form the ESOP, as we could now help to financially give back to those who have always believed in us”. Adding to their regard, the founders said “we believe providing ownership as a company offering will lead to greater coworker satisfaction, reduced turnover, enhanced recruitment and give a more rewarding work experience. As a 100% Employee-Owned company, we are able to continue our companywide culture of coworker empowerment, enthusiasm and enjoyment.” For more information, visit: www.siteworksllc.net.

A little secret about your customers that will revolutionize your marketing Article provided by Jason Bouwman, ALCA member and President of Compass Creative, a brand marketing agency that helps landscaping and homebuilding professionals grow their business. ost businesses today are making a big mistake that is costing them thousands, tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. I want to let you in on a little secret that will help you improve your leads and conversions in a BIG way. What I’m about to share with you will help you better connect with new clients and build trust with them quickly. More than anything else, this one lesson has the potential to revolutionize your marketing and help you grow your business.
The Internal Problem
The internal problem is how this situation is making your customer feel. (The number of choices and options can leave one feeling overwhelmed)
The Philosophical Problem
The External Problem
An external problem is the thing standing in the way of someone getting what they want. Your customers may want things like… • A new pool and patio. • A more beautiful or comfortable home. • A beautiful space where they can entertain family and friends. • A bigger house for their growing family. Their problem is what’s standing in the way of them getting what they want. For example… • Too many options to choose from • Lack of skill (or time) to renovate. • An overgrown and messy yard with nowhere to sit or dine. • Nothing seems to match their specific taste. Talking to your customers about their external problems is a good first step to getting their attention and making a connection, but there’s more!
