CEO’S MESSAGE

Market To Your Clients

W

ell it is the beginning of another beautiful spring and after renovating the plants in my yard, especially from the frost we experienced this chilly winter, my Ruellia, lantana, Texas Mountain Laurel and Anacacho orchid tree are blooming beautifully. So where is this leading, you ask? Well, now is the time for landscape contractors to take advantage of the spring’s blooming season and look at their best landscape projects in order to compete in ALCA’s Excellence in Landscaping Awards Program. Winning recipients have an excellent opportunity to market their company to existing and potential clients. Contractors may invite the property owners and managers as their guests to the Judy Gausman banquet so that they can witness their beautifully ALCA CEO landscaped properties when they are honored with an award. One ALCA member sent out a newsletter to his clients that read, “How did your landscaper do in 2019?” In it, he listed all of the awards received on various projects that were entered in the competition. In addition, all award recipients and their properties are featured in one of the issues of the ALCA Influence magazine. This publication is distributed to all ALCA members, your legislators, affiliates of the green industry and licensed landscape contractors in the state….nearly 1,600 copies. Employee recognition is key for employee morale. This is a great opportunity to recognize and honor supervisors and foremen for their hard work, dedication and pride in the projects they have been involved with. Companies often order extra plaques to give to their supervisors and foremen at their Holiday parties.

Now is the time to take pictures of your best projects, fill out the application and submit to the ALCA office by May 31st. You can download the application online at www.ALCA.org. This year the program will be held on November 23 at the beautiful Wigwam Resort and Spa. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to market to your clients, recognize and honor your employees, be a leader in the industry and compete with the best! Respectfully Submitted, Judy Gausman, CEO

Native Resources International Commercial Installation Over $4 Million Scottsdale National Golf Course – Scottsdale, AZ Completing an 18 month project, Native Resources International finalized its scope of work at the 18-hole golf course at Scottsdale National Golf Club. NRI was contracted by YAM Holdings to salvage trees and cacti from the site and then replanted throughout the 120 acres. Over 800 trees and saguaros were salvaged with an incredible 98% survival rate at the replant stage. Project Manager, Victor Hernandez, worked closely with Doug Enroth of Pinnacle Design to layout and replant the salvaged material complimented by an enhanced native plant pallet. Over 1,700 trees and 42,000 plants were imported from various vendors around the state. The 4.5 million dollar project was completed and opened in November 2017.

Grounds Control LLC Commercial Installation $1 Million - $4 Million Marina Heights – Tempe, AZ

Marina Heights sits on the south bank of Tempe Town Lake just north of the ASU Stadium. Developed by Ryan Companies, it features over 2 million square feet of office and retail space. The project consisted of over 300,000 square feet of decomposed granite, Mexican beach pebbles, and rip rap. There are 65,000 square feet of turf, 7800 shrubs, accents and ground covers, along with 500 trees. The project also features several boulders in excess of 20 tons each, some of which are prominently displayed as part of the hardscape along Rio Salado Parkway. The entire project sits atop a six story parking garage, making it one of the largest over-structure projects in the area.

The Groundskeeper Commercial Maintenance $50,001 - $100,000 Tucson Premium Outlet Mall – Tucson, AZ Tucson Premium Outlet Mall is situated on 45 acres with a variety of low water usage, desert friendly plant material. The parking lot areas and perimeters are planted with a variety of trees and shrubs. There are 152 date palms that line the entrances to the parking lots, the perimeter of the mall, and the interior courtyards. The irrigation system is a two wire Rain Bird with 52 valves all controlled from a central timer. Smashing of plants in the courtyard and vehicle damage to trees and shrubs in parking lots are a challenge but constant and vigilant care keeps this property looking its best.

his year, Mountain States Wholesale Nursery celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Ron and Maureen Gass started the nursery in 1969, just a few years after Ron earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona. Finding inspiration from the mature plantings housed at Boyce Thompson Arboretum (Superior, AZ) and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (Tucson, AZ), Mountain States began to develop and grow native desert plants to be used on Highway Beautification Projects. Seeing the beauty and adaptability of desert plants as an asset when a drought occurred in the 1970’s, it became clear that desert plants provided a practical counterbalance to thirsty landscapes and began to receive deep attention by the public. MSWN loves desert plants, their adaptability and beauty, combined with their durability has been recognized by the public and embraced by landscape architects throughout the Southwest. Partnering with institutions, such as Desert

address these needs. MSWN is an industry leader in developing, introducing and popularizing fresh, new desert-adapted plants. We have earned our reputation for honesty, integrity, humility and generosity of spirit by catering to our clientele’s discriminating tastes by offering a wide range of exceptional products and services. Our highly professional staff understands and responds to customers’ needs in a friendly and personal manner. MSWN consistently provides plants that are hardy, healthy, and beautiful. Mountain States has been privileged to collaborate with botanists and nursery professionals to ‘discover’ new plant species and propagate them, creating an ever-increasing palette of plant materials for landscapes. Our plant choices have grown from durable natives, which serve to anchor difficult and demanding vegetation sites, to include plants with additional hues and forms that add texture, refinement and brilliance to already proven durability. There are many ways to measure progress at Mountain States; to us the most meaningful sign is the presence of previously unused desert plants in thoughtful landscapes throughout the Southwest. These landscapes range from large-scale projects to simple private gardens, each quietly recognizing our deserts as places of great beauty, diversity and well-springs of life. Partnering with landscape architects and contractors has helped us to identify trends and consumer wants and needs. ALCA MEMBER PROFILE RAIN BIRD

Rain Bird The Intelligent Use of Water™

Over the past eight decades, Rain Bird has strived to deliver products to the market that use water in the most efficient ways possible. Founded in 1933 during the agricultural boom in California, Rain Bird Corporation began with the invention of the original Horizontal Action Impact Drive Sprinkler. The product revolutionized the irrigation industry. Since the beginning, Rain Bird has produced and offered the industry’s broadest range of irrigation products. Decades before the term “water restrictions” became a common term, Rain Bird recognized the need to wisely use and conserve our most precious resource. Rain Bird’s commitment to The Intelligent Use of Water™ continues to influence all aspects of Rain Bird’s business philosophy and resonates through constant innovation and development o f w a t e r- c o n serving products that include irrigation sprinklers, drip components, pumps and timer/ controllers. Today, Rain Bird offers over 4,000 watersaving irrigation products that can be found in farms, golf courses, sports arenas, commercial developments and homes in more than 130 countries around the world.

Controllers. Rain Bird continues to break new ground in the controller category. With the recent release of the ESPTM2, Rain Bird has proven that usability and advanced features are not limited to commercial controllers. With features such as the “Save” and “Restore” options, reversing undesirable changes made to a controller’s programming are quick and easy- a feature not found in comparable controllers. The versatility of the ESP-TM2 is evident through its ability to be upgraded to a Wi-Fi enabled controller by simply plugging the LNK WiFi Module into the accessory port of the controller. The LNK WiFi Module allows the controller to be automatically adjusted through internet based weather data defined by the zip code inputted during the setup process. Following setup of the LNK WiFi Module, the controller can then be accessed from anywhere in the world using the Rain Bird Mobile App. For more information about the many ways that Rain Bird innovations continue to help contractors grow their businesses, visit Rain Bird’s web site at www.rainbird. com. Or contact Daniel Porter at dporter@ rainbird.com.

A Legacy Continued

Within the past two years, Rain Bird has introduced dozens of new products with more on the way. Some products are an additional component that increases the efficiency of an existing product. Others are an improved new version of an existing product. And others are an entirely new product in itself. Sprays and Rotors. For decades, Rain Bird sprays and rotors have developed a proven track record of unmatched performance. With features including the SAM(Seal-A-Matic™) in-stem check valve, the patented PRS in-stem pressure regulator and the Flow-Shield™ option, the 1800™ Series Spray body carries on Rain Bird’s commitment to water conservation through unmatched innovation. As well, for use on the legendary 1800™ Series Spray, the new R-VAN Adjustable Rotary Nozzles provide water efficiency and design flexibility through matched precipitation rates across the entire product line. Furthermore, the rotating stream technology significantly reduces run off and erosion. When paired with the 1800™ Series PRS Spray body, users can expect to save up to 30% more water than other brands of rotary nozzles on the market today. And Rain Bird’s 5000 Series MPR (Matched Precipitation Rate) Nozzles help contractors obtain perfectly balanced coverage when zones are found to be installed consisting of a combination of either quarter, third, half or even full circle rotor heads. The 5000 Series MPR Nozzles even have a matched precipitation rate to that of the R-VAN rotary nozzle offering a solution should a contractor find a zone consisting of both rotor and spray heads. Drip Irrigation. Rain Bird’s drip irrigation products continue to provide outstanding water efficiency. Unaffected by wind or evaporation, XFS Subsurface Dripline effectively irrigates turf, shrubs and groundcover with 30% to 70% less water than overhead sprays. CopperShield™ Technology protects the dripline’s emitters from root intrusion without the use of chemicals or herbicides. Meanwhile, Rain Bird’s Spray-to-Drip Retrofit Kit allows a contractor to easily convert an existing spray zone to a low-volume irrigation zone without having to disrupt the valve. The spray bodies are simply converted to act as both a 30 PSI Pressure Regulator and a 200 Mesh Filter. ½” threaded to barbed fittings are then used to connect ½” drip tubing to the heads.

f you are like most landscapers right now, you are setting up for a very busy season ahead. You’re bidding on business, locking in projects for the coming months and getting things planned out. The more proactive you are, the more money you will make. Spring is a great time to get on top of things and maybe spend a little money to save a lot. Ensuring that maintenance and service work is done now on your work vehicles will mean that you can keep them working when the work comes in. Also, with lead times for work trucks getting longer, now is the time to plan for new purchases so that you have the truck when the work needs to start. Rodeo Ford has been a business partner to landscapers in Arizona for years. My company has been part of the planning cycles of many of our customers and has been able to save them a lot of money. A little advance notice is all we need to make sure that you have the right vehicle available to you when you need it. The best part is that you don’t pay for it until it rolls off the lot. This is just one way that Rodeo Ford has become a trusted advisor to so many businesses, especially those in landscaping. We all know that when the peak season comes, all that matters is keeping the work flowing. This means ensuring that you are delivering great customer service on time and on budget. To do this, business managers need to keep the vehicles in top shape and the work crews safe and productive. Rodeo Ford and the Ford Motor Company have long been innovators with providing superior products and superior service to back them up. To extend this leadership, we are offering customers Ford Telematics, an innovative solution to help landscapers get the most out of their business. It improves worker productivity, safety and reduces operating, maintenance and even insurance costs. Here are a few examples: Business managers will know where their work crews are at all times. If an urgent job comes in, managers will be able to identify the closest team with the right equipment to respond and then dispatch them with directions. The result is a happy customer and more revenue. Rodeo Ford also offers the ability to monitor our customers’ fleets for them so that they can focus on their business. If a vehicle’s oil life is getting low or if there is water sensed in the diesel, Rodeo Ford is alerted and proactively schedules preventative maintenance without unnecessary downtime and lost revenue. Catching problems like this early saves a lot! Further, with Ford Telematics, customers have been proven to save thousands per vehicle in operating costs. Landscaping is not an easy business, let alone one to be financially successful in. Business partners like Rodeo Ford can provide solutions to problems and identify ways to work smarter that weren’t available until now. Most importantly, business partners like Rodeo Ford stand behind you and the products and services that Rodeo Ford provides to you. I am proud to have had the opportunity to be the trusted partner to so many Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association members. All of us at Rodeo Ford are inspired by the commitment to service that all of the ALCA members have and we do our best every day to provide that same level of commitment. We measure ourselves by our ability to support and grow your business, which is why we are continually looking to provide innovative products and services like Ford Telematics. Springtime is a great time for us all. So much lies ahead for us all in the coming months. As we all prepare for a busy season ahead, just know that Rodeo Ford is proud to be a committed and engaged ALCA member and one that is ready to stand by you to help you grow and manage your business. ALCA MEMBER PROFILE SOUTHWEST SOD

Southwest Sod

D

o you know how to make your neighbors green with envy? It’s simple. We here at Southwest Sod have just the product for you – turfgrass. Over time, we discovered the perfect balance between key ingredients, including incredible plant stock, water, maintenance, good soil conditions, and sunlight. This is the magic formula that has powered our products for decades. Our climate can be unforgiving, which can test, at times, even the most experienced farmer. Our team has been growing turf for more than 30 years, and we have learned a thing or two on how to grow the very best lawn in the desert Southwest. So, let’s highlight how you can spot and eliminate turf trouble. As the temperature begins to warm up, keep a close eye out for a blue and gray tinted green turf color, which may be a sign of heat stress. You have seen this before. Picture this – the sprinklers are hard at work throughout the yard. But, there are a few corners in hard to reach areas that just are not getting the best moisture level needed to thrive. Of course, you probably did not notice this issue in the winter months because of the cooler weather. But, the summer can be brutal. If you begin to notice an area of the lawn that

is turning a blue and gray tinted green turf color, adjust the sprinklers and saturate the area with a garden hose, at least initially, to help ensure water reaches the root system. A good saturation level will allow a screwdriver to penetrate that area, but please refrain from creating standing water, which can create other issues. If you are not able to catch the turf in time, than the blue and gray tinted green turf area could become yellow. If this is the case, we still have you covered. Of course, you can always visit us on the farm and pick up a few rolls to patch up the area. As farmers, we believe it is our duty to ensure you are well prepared to grow the turf. In short, adjust your sprinklers and break up the soil for aeration purposes with a shovel. Then focus on refining your fertilizer technique. Over the summer growing season, your existing lawn should fill in the yellow areas. Some may accuse us of viewing the world through our turf colored glasses, which may be true. But, we sure can spot quickly, simply by the color shade, whether a lawn needs fertilizer. If the lawn is beginning to share the same color as a lime, a Palo Verde tree, or even some mesquite leaves, than you may want to review your fertilizing schedule. A healthy lawn should grow vigorously and have a strong color. The key is getting the science behind fertilizer to line up with our local weather patterns. Be sure to fertilize the lawn once a month with an ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) in the summer and ammonium phosphate (16-20-0) in the winter. You can remember when to use our favorite fertilizers like this – think ammonium sulfate in the summer and ammonium phosphate in the winter. Admittedly, ammonium phosphate in the winter is harder to remember, but if you remember ammonium sulfate in the summer, you are half way there. When purchasing fertilizer, do not worry about the brand name or the form. Focus on the chemical composition. Once you have purchased the fertilizer, all you need to do is follow the instructions on the label to determine the amount of fertilizer that you should apply to the lawn. As always, please call us anytime at 602-271-4266 or visit our website at southwestsod.com if you have any questions. We are probably just watching the grass grow, and we are always eager to talk turf.

BackflowSAFE

ackflowSAFE is a manufacturer of highquality, high-security backflow preventer enclosures. Realizing that backflow preventer and copper theft is a growing epidemic here in the Valley and that typical enclosures on the market weren’t really slowing thieves down, we were committed to developing a real and immediate solution for property owners and caretakers. Our enclosures are the only ones on the local market that utilize a heavy-duty puck lock that cannot be cut off or tampered with. (Oh, by the way – the lock comes with it!). The Shacklebox is your best defense against theft but yet the easiest enclosure for technicians to get in and out of to perform service. All our products are created by skilled craftsmen right here in Phoenix. In addition to our standard product line, our fabricators can custom make enclosures to protect components in any unique configuration or location. We also offer installation services throughout the Valley. We are partnering with landscapers, architects, community managers, and commercial facility managers to help them protect their client’s expensive irrigation components.

We want industry professionals to know that we are ready and willing to provide them with better and proven innovative products to defend against backflow preventer theft and vandalism. For more information, please call 480.822.8168 or visit us at www.backflowsafe.com.

She began writing her books about 10 years ago after many years of research and finding a publisher. The Art of Southwest Landscaping is dedicated to the wide variety of delightful desert accents, cacti, groundcovers, ornamental grasses, palms, shrubs, succulents, trees and vines that can beautify landscapes. reetings ALCA members, I am Tyler Bowen, Territory Manager for Corteva AgriScience. Say it (KOR-TEH-VA) if that helps! I am replacing a very knowledgeable and well-respected former co-worker Vince Aguiar after his retirement this past winter from Dow AgroSciences. Dow and DuPont recently merged and intend to spin off into three separate publicly traded companies in the coming months. One of those companies will be called Corteva and will be a pure play agriculture company. I cover mainly Arizona and New Mexico in Turf and Ornamental herbicides as well as Pasture and Land Management herbicides. Some of the things you may be familiar with would be Dimension, Gallery, Milestone, Cleantraxx, and Tordon. Originally from Willcox, AZ , I now live in Tucson where I graduated from the U of A. When I was hired with Dow Agrosciences around 2015, I was put into a crop protection territory based out of Bismarck, North Dakota where I spent the majority of my time aside from a short stop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota before being able to return home to Arizona this past winter. I am looking forward to learning more about some of the specific issues the ALCA members face, and what I can do to help. If there is anything I can do between now and our meeting, my contact information will be left below. You’re welcome to call, text, or email whenever.

xtreme Mist PCS, LLC is announcing the newest lightweight, hands-free, professional-grade Personal Cooling System (PCS). The ExtremeMistTM PCS is a rechargeable pump system that greatly extends summer outdoor activity by creating a cooling cloud of mist which reduces temperatures up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Hook the ExtremeMistTM PCS and available Quad Nozzle Kit to your tents, canopies, umbrellas, boats, or anywhere else you want to cool down. Then, easily adjust the speed and density of mist from up to 30 feet away with the touch of a button using the wireless remote control. “With over two years of development and testing, we’re proud of the ExtremeMistTM PCS and what it can do,” says Ron Laikind, avid outdoorsmen, entrepreneur, and founder of Extreme Mist PCS, LLC. “I live in Arizona, the hottest of the United States, and the PCS lets me get out and do the activities I love - even during the hottest summer months.” Want to cool down and go farther? The ExtremeMistTM Retrofit Kit easily installs into any hydration backpack you may already own, or check out the new line of complete “Just Add Water” packs, pre-installed and ready to go. The PCS measures only 7.5” x 3.5” x 1.5” and weights just 16oz., including its rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. On the lower speeds, recommended

for hiking, running, or cycling, the average water consumption is approximately 1 ¾ to 2 ½ cups per hour. A fully-charged battery lasts about 3 hours at high-speed and approximately 12 hours on the lower speeds. Until now, high-pressure misting systems have been mainly restricted to home and commercial markets, along with a few low-end pump-up systems. Personal systems are typically hand-held, mini fan-style misters. The ExtermeMistTM PCS fills the gap with a professional-grade, hands-free system designed for active people. To learn more or purchase any of these fine products, visit the company’s website at www. ExtremeMist.com.

e all want to be better stewards of the earth. However, not everyone is willing and/or able to grow their own food. Not everyone can afford to build, or re-build, their home completely from renewable resources. And most HOAs frown on chickens and bee hives on your property, as well as traditional rain barrels.

You’ll need to calculate just how much rainwater you can and want to capture on the property. Then you can figure out how large of an underground cistern you’ll need to accommodate that Rainwater harvesting system in action amount. Don’t worry: you can set up an overflow for when it’s reached capacity. Next, decide on the best place to locate that cistern. It Doesn’t Rain in Phoenix!

Well, it does. We just tend to get it all at once! So, instead of sending the water off-property and on down the road carrying whatever contaminants it picks up along the way to eventually deposit in the lakes, rivers, and oceans, maybe we should consider capturing it and re-using it on our own property. It might even reduce personal water bills!

Getting Started

If rain gutters are not already installed on the home, that would be a logical first step. If the home is in an HOA, prior approval is probably required. Nowadays, rain gutters come in all kinds of colors to match houses and eaves.

Chapman has been in the commercial truck business for over 30 years, and we’re still family owned and operated. That means you can count on an old-fashioned commitment to quality, service and caring. Things that seem to be missing in business lately. But at Chapman, we’ve always placed a higher value on reputation than on finances. Maybe that’s why we’ve got the highest customer service index in Arizona. We lease and sell the best commercial vehicles available. We back them up with the best customer service in the Valley, including dedicated commercial service facilities. Plus, we respect and appreciate your bottom line, so we make the deal fit. And we do it all with a big smile and a warm handshake. Yes, you can buy or lease a truck anywhere. But there’s only one Chapman Experience.

MAKE IT A SITE TO SEE Supplies. Education. Service.
