PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

ATTITUDE! Greetings!

I

hope everyone is healthy and staying busy. With the ongoing COVID-19 virus, the elections behind us finally, and our kids needing more of your attention because you have now taken on the role of “teacher” as well as mom or dad, the challenges upon us all are daunting and stressful. The good news though, your glass is still half full! How can this be you say? Attitude. We all have to find a way to find a balance in our daily lives to maintain a positive attitude. If not for ourselves, for those around us! Not only for those in our homes but at work as well. People feed off of one another. Negativity breeds negativity. Positive up beat attitudes breeds less stress and more productivity. My owner at Creative Environments Dan Waters has a habit of greeting you with a fist bump and the words “Happy Monday” or whatever day it is. He sets a tone every day that is positive regardless of what problems or challenges we are all facing at that moment. People can sense your attitude, this includes customers. With the ringing in of the New Year, we all try to start the year off fresh and form new habits. I do hope you are all still on point with your New Year’s Resolutions! Developing a more positive attitude will not only make you feel better but it will spread, and people will sense this. A positive attitude is also a great way to show confidence. And confidence is a great way to bread success in all facets of our lives. I think it goes without saying that if you are successful, you should be less stressed. Less stress means you can focus on the more important things in life, like family, spirituality, or just being that awesome teacher for your kids. Right now our market is growing by leap and bounds. New home starts, remodels, multifamily housing, commercial buildings, and for those of you just doing maintenance, all of this new landscaping needs to be maintained. New opportunities are presenting themselves every single day. Take a positive approach to everything you do and success will be bountiful. I can speak from experience! Since taking on my new position, I have experienced

growth professionally, personally, and for that I am blessed. The last week of February and the first week of March, I too had to battle the COVID-19 Virus. I stayed positive and did what the doctors and CDC asked. After 14 days I was back to work, and after about 28 days, I was back to 110%. Dwight Faires I strongly believe that attitude will make or 2021 ALCA President break you. So make the most of your lives and work on staying positive. Trust me, it is infectious! ALCA today is in very good hands with your new board in place who I introduced you to in the last magazine publication, and Judy and our staff at the steering wheel. Despite the challenges we had to endure last year, as an organization we were able to adjust, adapted, and overcome what could have been financial disaster. The leadership of Judy and the board though were able to ensure financially, ALCA is stronger than ever, and we were able to continue to provide much need training and education to help our membership which is one of our primary goals. Further, we were able to keep you all informed of CDC and State mandates to get us through this pandemic. Attitude got us where we are today and it will help us all come together again soon (Face to Face). I cannot wait to see you all soon, shake hands, hug and get back to participate in normal activities. Just a quick note: WE ARE HAVING AN AWARDS PROGRAM THIS YEAR where we can all gather and do what we do best! Celebrate our efforts, reward our employees, laugh, smile and toast to new upcoming successes. Stay Positive, Be Positive, Attitude! Best Wishes, Dwight Faires, ALCA President

CEO’S MESSAGE

58 Years and Growing

N

ow that we are well into the 2021 year, I would like to recognize and thank each renewing and new ALCA member for remaining connected to a reliable network of over 400 landscape and affiliated companies. Of these 400, 70% of the membership are contractors, municipalities, and landscape designers and architects. One of the goals of the ALCA Board and the mission of the association has been to encourage Arizona licensed landscape contractors to become a part of ALCA and elevate the professionalism of the Green Industry. This is accomplished in a number of ways. With an active legislation year and a record 1802 bills introduced, ALCA continues to monitor potential rules and laws that affect your business and take action with the help of lobbyists DeMenna Public Affairs and Goodman Schwartz Public Affairs. With nearly 100 volunteers each year, ALCA continues to provide workshops and trainings to cover a wide variety of topics. There are opportunities to earn certifications in an effort to increase productivity, build the skills that help you improve your job performance, move forward in your career, and make you even more valuable to your business, employer and clients. It is amazing to see how many contractors are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to educate other members. Whether it is how to best install a tree, prune a shrub or troubleshoot irrigation, our fellow contractors are elevating the knowledge and abilities of their fellow colleagues in the field. There are other educational opportunities to learn more about the business or human resources side of your operations so that you are even better equipped to navigate your business. Included in the 100 volunteers are the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees and committee members who are focused and dedicated to looking after the needs and interests of the members. Like most, they have

become experts in Zoom meetings as we discuss and navigate through the issues, concerns and the successes of the association. This dedication to the industry is why ALCA remains one of the oldest and strongest trade organizations around. In the next issue, I look forward to discussing the value of the Associate Members and why we Judy Gausman should say thank you by doing business with them. ALCA CEO Here’s to 58 years and growing! W

hich turfgrass do I like best? Well, that is like asking me my favorite type of tractor. All of our hybrid Bermuda grasses are top notch, which is why we have carried each variety for years. As farmers, we are not into fads or shiny, new trends. Our products are incredible, and these varieties have stood the test of time, much like our company, having operated in the Arizona desert for more than 30 years. As I look out at our beautiful green fields, I cannot help but think of a recent project, where a customer needs a variety that looks good, is easy to maintain, and can withstand high traffic and dogs. For this application, Midiron was the variety recommended, and the product has worked very well for our customer. We have recommended Midiron for years as a great option for homeowners, schools, commercial job sites, or areas where soil quality may not be ideal. With the proper care, Midiron can really enhance your client’s property. It also works like magic with dog urine! Other customers like to have the best yard on the block, with the deepest green color and a soft blade structure. In these situations, Tifway is our go-to variety. While Tifway does require more attention than our other varieties, the end result can be very impressive. You may have seen Tifway on the golf courses as this variety is often used on the fairways. Others have used Tifway as a variety for ballparks because of its good looks. But we sure enjoy watching Tifway grow and thrive in our Southern Arizona fields.

Sometimes Tifway gets all the attention, but Tifgreen should not be overlooked. This variety is one of our greatest hits. Put another way, it is one of our original varieties, and we sure are proud of the many contributions this turfgrass has made throughout our State. Golfers are happier because of Tifgreen and homeowners love this variety too. Like Midiron, this variety is tough and able to withstand the wear and tear of being a popular platform for kids, pets, and golfers alike. But, Tifgreen also has a nice, fine blade and is a shade greener, and a deeper green than Midiron. Midiron and Tifway need to be mowed once a week to an inch in height. Tifgreen enjoys being mowed two or three times a week. If the grass is allowed to grow for longer periods of time the mower will scalp the turf. This makes the sod susceptible to disease. The sharpness of the mower blades makes a big difference in the health of the plant stock. A well fertilized yard strengthens the plant as well as protects your lawn from drought, disease and weeds. In the spring and summer season when daylight increases, we suggest an application of something similar to 21-0-0 on a monthly basis. Nitrogen is the primary ingredient because the blades

12

THE ALCA INFLUENCE

T

absorb a substantial amount of sunlight that helps your lawn maintain its deep green color. In the fall, overseeded sod prefers 16-20-0. It is a nitrogen and phosphorus blend. The shorter daylight hours mean the sod needs a nutrient source (phosphorus) to recharge its chlorophyll reserves. We recommend an application every 4 to 6 weeks. If you have raised these varieties as long as we have, you would have a hard time picking favorites too. These turfgrasses have enhanced curb appeal of our customers’ yards, and of course the safety and security this soft, natural platform has provided to many growing families and students alike. Call us if you have a question regarding our turf. Our varieties love the sunshine and do not like to be hidden beneath a tree. As you know, we enjoy watching the grass grow, so you don’t have to! s a premier grower and wholesale supplier of desert-adapted plants for more than 50 years, we extend our gratitude to all who continue to encourage and support us. Like so many of you, the past year strengthened our resolve to not just try to maintain operations, but to improve and grow our services, and do so in an even safer manner. This will be an ever-evolving process, but we are committed to the challenge. Here are just some of the improvements we made: social distancing and mask wearing, expanded customer service and will-call departments; additional administrative and production staff; and remodeled offices with new workstations, to provide more separation for both staff and customers. Quite fortunately, we sold record numbers of plants last year, so we are working hard to fill hundreds of acres of production and growing fields at our Glendale and Cochise locations. We continue to deliver throughout Arizona, as well as the entire southwest region, from California to Texas. While the vast majority of our deliveries are done using our own trucks and drivers, we also contract additional resources as needed. On the plant side, we are continuing with our efforts to introduce new plants every year. We have two new plants from our extensive breeding program to offer this year, and many more coming down the road. We are always working to select improved varieties of plants in the landscape, and find new selections that are heat and drought tested. More info is always available on our website at www.mswn.com. Growing Starts with Knowing Drastically improve business growth by simply measuring these two things. andscape Professionals are hardworking folks. You have a love for nature, you can build almost anything and you have a keen eye for great design. It’s a powerful combination of skills and passions that has led many of you to start your own landscape businesses. Starting your own business is a daunting challenge few actually take. By becoming a member of ALCA and setting time aside to learn about your business, you’ve indicated you are someone who has what it takes to succeed. In addition to courage and a willingness to learn; to succeed in growing a business you’ve got to know your numbers! And not just the typical numbers your accountant gives you at the end of the month (gross revenue, overhead expenses, cost of goods etc…) Any strategy for growing a business starts with measuring these two things: leads and conversions.

If you treasure it, measure it.

Many business owners don’t understand marketing jargon. But almost everyone knows what a “tire kicker” is. All agree that tire kickers cost you money. Most business owners wish they were doing a better job marketing. So, get rid of tire kickers and learn where you can spend your marketing dollars most effectively by first measuring leads and conversions. We’re excited about the possibilities that will open up for your business when you make measurement of your leads and conversions a habit. Learn what’s working and what’s not working. Then spend your marketing dollars smartly and with greater confidence. P.S. Want to take your game up a notch? Record where your leads are coming from too. This will tell you which marketing tactics are most effective and delivering the most qualified leads. 1. Leads P.P.S. Next time we’re going to let you in on a little-known secret about Leads are simply any incoming inquiries about your business. Leads come your customer… Learning this simple secret about your customer will in the form of phone calls, emails, Facebook messages or even conversations revolutionize your marketing… it may even change your life! at weekend BBQs. Measuring leads tells you how many people have shown interest in your products or services. Not every lead turns into a sale though, so you’ll also want to measure conversions.

2. Conversions

Conversions are the number of leads that turn into paying projects or contracts (sales). Your rate of conversion will tell you how clearly you’re communicating. It will also tell you if you’re reaching the right people with your message and if your sales team is doing a good job of closing deals. These two basic metrics — leads and conversions — are extremely important. They help you understand your clients and give you keen insights on how to improve your marketing strategy. For example: If you discover that you have a strong conversion rate (a high number of sales compared to leads), a strategy for growth may be to simply reach more people with the same message or offer. A weaker conversion rate might indicate that your message is confusing, unattractive, or not reaching the right people. Strategies for growth here would include clarifying your message, improving your image or getting your sales team to some training. Without knowing your lead count and conversion rate, any money you spend on marketing and advertising will be put at risk. You’ll be left groping in the dark rather than developing an effective strategy to build demand for your brand. Here’s a simple plan for measuring leads and conversions. 1. Make measurement of leads a priority for anyone who answers a company phone or email. 2. Task your sales team with tracking and recording the sales they close (conversions) as they’ll be the most familiar with this information. 3. To start off, record leads and conversions in a simple spreadsheet that is accessible to everyone. You can use an Excel spreadsheet and save it on a company server, or use Google Sheets for improved collaboration and accessibility. 4. Save some space on your calendar every month to analyze the results.

Keeping License Personnel Up-To-Date

C

hange happens. It’s a natural part of operating a business. With that change however, comes responsibility. It is the license holder’s responsibility to update Arizona Registrar of Contractors (AZ ROC) of all changes including changes related to qualifying party, company ownership and contact information associated with the license. It is clear that having the correct contact information on file is critical for AZ ROC to be able to notify licensees of any issues. What is not as obvious to many licensees is that it is equally important to notify AZ ROC of any changes related to personnel named on the license. Failing to update AZ ROC about personnel changes can have serious consequences, including the Qualifying Party.

Complaints

Personnel listed as active on a license when a contract was signed are responsible for and can be held accountable for any work performed by the licensee, complaints or Recovery Fund claims associated with that license during the period they were listed as active and in the two years following the work.

Future Changes

Another reason to update personnel information is to prevent unnecessary delays in processing other license requests such as renewals, new applications or bond updates. Any changes or requests regarding a license must be made by a listed authorized representative. If that person no longer works for the company or if a different person has assumed that role, that information must be updated before other requests can be approved.

Qualifying Party

By Arizona law, when a Qualifying Party for a license ceases to be connected with a license for any reason, both the licensee and the Qualifying Party must give written notice to AZ ROC within fifteen (15) days after such disassociation. If a Qualifying Party is a partner, corporate officer, or member of the business entity, an amended Articles of Incorporation, Amended LLC Agreement or Amended Partnership Agreement reflecting the change must also be submitted. The effective date of the disassociation is the date the disassociation is received by Registrar of Contractors. The licensee has sixty (60) days from the date of the disassociation to have another qualified person placed on the license. If the licensee fails to have another person qualified within sixty (60) days, the license will be automatically suspended until another qualified person is placed on the license.
