PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Get Educated, Get Involved, and Get Moving

H Matthew Johnson 2013 ALCA President

ere we are in the final quarter of 2013 and preparing to start 2014. As we approach the holidays and the New Year, it seems natural that we reflect on the time gone by. As part of my reflection, I think back on the fond memories of all of the great experiences I have been afforded as an ALCA Board Member. I have seen how the past relates to future successes and how new people and new ideas have forever changed the industry for the good. I am so proud of my fellow board members and what they have accomplished in such a short time in ACLP, SLM, Safety & Insurance, Events, Membership, and all of the other programs that go on day after day. I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful Board of Directors. Each board member has been diligent in making their respective committees the best possible program it could be. The ALCA commitment to education in the last few years has caught the attention of the AZ Association of Community Managers (AACM) and the area schools. To influence the horticulture industry by passing along information to high school teachers and students about Sustainable Landscape Management is a huge step. There is no greater honor than to impact the minds of young adults.

More industry professionals have taken advantage of the ACLP courses in the past 2 years than ever before. The knowledge gained through these courses not only makes you a more valuable resource to your company, but you are more valuable for those customers who want quality service. The more time I spend with the landscape professionals that serve on the board as volunteers, the more fortunate I feel to have them representing this industry. I can’t mention volunteers without recognizing those who take on numerous roles and spend countless hours on the various programs that make ALCA the great organization that it is. Without our volunteers, ALCA would not be able to offer the benefits and services that make it the reputable association we know it to be. This being my final message in this particular location, I want to pay my gratitude to everyone involved in ALCA. You are the professionals that are the driving force behind this great organization. My mantra has always been, get educated, get involved, and get moving.

Matthew Johnson, ALCA President

The overall rate increase in Arizona is similar to national trends as carrier’s combined loss ratios are still exceeding 100%. Another issue that will have an impact is a change in the experience rating formula. The primary losses had been capped at $5000 for the past 20 years and effective 1/1/2014 the cap will increase from $10,000 to $13,500, the second step in a multiyear change. Hunter Industries Built on Innovation Hunter Industries is a family-owned global company that provides high quality, efficient solutions for the irrigation, outdoor lighting, and custom molding industries. Our diverse array of products can be seen everywhere from residential landscapes, to stadiums, national landmarks, theme parks, city parks, commercial complexes, hotels, and municipal buildings around the world. Whether you’re from New York, Shanghai, Sydney, Paris, Moscow, or Cairo, the odds are you’ve probably encountered a Hunter product somewhere along the way. Hunter was founded by irrigation industry pioneer and entrepreneur Edwin “Ed” Hunter with the help of his sons Paul and Richard, and daughter Ann. In 1983, the small Hunter team introduced the PGP gear-driven rotor to the world of irrigation. The proprietary product started what is now referred to as “The Rotor Revolution” in the landscape irrigation industry. Its success as an efficient, reliable product quickly put Hunter on the map as a well-respected irrigation equipment manufacturer. In 1985, with demand growing for the PGP, Hunter opened international distribution channels in Australia and Europe. By 1994 the Hunter catalog grew to include short and long-distance rotors, sprays, valves, and controllers. With the company stable and the future bright, Ed retired in 1994. The next leader of Hunter Industries would be Ed’s son Richard, an accomplished engineer and entrepreneur. Throughout the 1990’s and into the new millennium, Hunter has grown to become a market leader in residential, commercial, and golf course irrigation system components. Still under the leadership of Richard Hunter, the product line now includes products ranging from rotors that throw between 10 and 160 feet, the water-saving MP Rotator, climate-based irrigation controllers, valves built to withstand 220 PSI, fully modular I-Core controllers, highly popular X-Core residential controllers, the subsurface irrigating Eco-Mat, Professional Landscape Dripline with built-in check-valves, and several robust central control options.

Beyond irrigation, Hunter has also recently increased our investment in Hunter Golf, our line of golf course irrigation products, acquired the innovation driven FX Luminaire brand of outdoor lighting, and formed Hunter Custom Molding, which offers our extremely efficient manufacturing services to industries beyond irrigation. While we couldn’t be more proud of the products we’ve introduced over the years, we’re most proud of what the Hunter name has come to signify. Throughout all of our interests, Hunter has grown to mean more. More support, more technical resources, more product training, market-stabilizing prices, and generous warranties. Because we understand our customers don’t just need a manufacturer, they need a partner. And that’s exactly what we strive to be on every level. Moving forward Hunter’s focus will continue to be on developing innovative products and providing the support our customers need to succeed. We will do so while pursuing the most water and energy efficient products and processes possible. We believe that properly designed and irrigated landscapes provide many environmental benefits including erosion control, improved water quality, environmental cooling, and carbon sequestration, among many others. Our philosophy is that our engineers’ workstations, test labs, production floors, and landscape sites are all places where innovation should meet conservation. Our commitment to conservation extends beyond our products. Hunter is actively involved in helping the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the development of the WaterSense product labeling program. This program is similar to Energy Star ratings for appliances, and will provide easy identification of products that use as little water as possible to properly irrigate landscapes. Our infrastructure as a corporation is built to minimize resource use as well. From our LEED certified factories and facilities, to our extensive material waste reduction efforts, every aspect of our business was developed to use as little natural resource as possible. Moving forward our promise to our customers and community remains the same: In our every endeavor, Hunter Industries will strive to employ business practices that use natural resources as efficiently as possible. Today, with four brands under our corporate banner, sales on every inhabited continent, and over 100 unique product lines, the Hunter promise of partnership still stands as strong as ever. And it’s exactly how we’ll continue to do business moving forward.

ALCA MEMBER PROFILE

Hill & Usher

Exclusively Providing TrimRisk for Landscapers Hill & Usher was established in 1995 by longtime Arizona resident and former contractor Richard B. Usher. With a contractor focus and a foot in the field, the agency’s early growth relied on Richard’s direct experience in purchasing the required coverage and protecting his business. Success is about talent, expertise, service and experience. Early on, Richard brought on a variety of skilled professionals who remain today, including Steve Shields, a former Regional Insurance Executive. In addition to Steve, Richard put young talent through formal and informal education, including his son Taylor. He hired Nicholas Dellaca, a student of the market and coverage trends. He added valuable staff to manage renewal operations and claims. Recently, he brought in a 20 year Farmers Insurance agent, Guy McTheny to give balance and perspective to the agency. With a staff of 30, Hill & Usher possesses the size to serve you quickly and efficiently, including the ability to issue certificates of insurance promptly. We aren’t so big that we turn down business—believe it or not, the larger the insurance provider, the more likely it is that you’ll need a fleet of 50 or more vehicles before they’ll be interested in placing your coverage. We are in business to protect you and gain your business through our better knowledge of the marketplace, trends and stability. We aren’t for sale, we don’t caste you away to understudies or lower-paid staff, we pay attention, and we are in business for landscape professionals. In 1999, Hill & Usher partnered to be the sole retail agency for an exclusive A+ rated carrier interested in providing Property and Liability programs to green industry in the Southwest. Trim Risk clients saved thousands in insurance costs as our program grew dramatically; fourteen years later, we continue to be a leader provider of insurance solutions to landscapers, tree trimmers, and related concerns. As an independent agency, we represent over 20 standard markets, probably the one who currently insures you, along with many others. The difference when you choose Hill & Usher is that we are committed to the landscape and tree care industries and we have the respect and attention of our underwriters that ultimately works to our clients benefit. Trim Risk is managed by Steve Shields. You may contact him at steve.shields@hillusher.com or 602-667-1828.

Landscape Lighting in the 21st Century Article provided by Bill Steinmetz, Moon Valley Lighting, LLC

L

andscape Lighting has finally joined the 21st century. We have all watched, participated and even capitalized on the state of the art advances made in water management and landscape control devices that allow us more and more control over how we manage (and allow our customers to manage) the maintenance and use of the increasingly magnificent outdoor environments advanced technology enables us to create. Professional landscape lighting is finally joining the ranks of the technologically advanced tools at our disposal. LED is here to stay; the advances in LED technology have now given us the opportunity to get that effect that has not been available in LED in the past. We can now modify color temperatures and beam spreads and in some cases use lenses and baffling to create virtually any result that

the best Professional Landscape Lighting Manufacturer representation in the country and I know from personal experience that all of them are more than willing to help out with planning, designing and giving you a consulting hand with the install. How you light your landscape can be a very individual preference but there are some standard “tricks of the trade” that will invariably serve you well and certainly impress your customer such as: Don’t forget the structure – even though you have added an amazing landscape, chances are you have a few great architectural features that could be enhanced. Remember to create depth – lighting areas around the perimeter give a sense of depth to the night time enjoyment of the outdoor living space. Use a variety of fixtures and lamp types – there is very little cost difference between a standard

loss as to how to maintain it. Whether it’s an HOA or a private residence, the maintenance crews are already on the property and know it better than anyone. Most of your properties already have lighting but I’ll bet it isn’t LED. Offering to convert them to LED will generate income for you as well as save you labor on replacing lamps and repairing/replacing fixtures (and

had been the exclusive realm of Halogen before now. The greatly extended warranty periods (4 to 5 years on drop in lamps and 10 to 15 years on integrated LED) coupled with the significant savings (up to 80%) on power usage have made LED the overwhelming choice of homeowners and professionals alike. We now have the ability to break up the lighting plan for any given property into zones that can be controlled independently of each other and in some cases raising and lowering (dimming) the light output to match a mood or event. This is accomplished with both hand held and panel mounted systems. Phone and computer apps will not be far behind. When designing and executing a landscape plan you already know where your focal points are going to be, so even if the homeowner has decided not to move forward with the Landscape lighting at this time you should still pre-wire. Prewiring should become a standard with all new installs. It doesn’t have to be expensive and can frequently be done in conjunction with irrigation installation. Simply determine your transformer location, run 12 gauge direct burial cable to a central location or area with your focal points in mind, and terminate with a generous loop in a 6” pit box (and please use sleeves for crossing hardscape areas). Obviously there should be at least a general idea of what the lighting plan may be in the future but we in Arizona have some of

spot, path, wall wash, hanging, niche and well fixtures (note I used the word standard). Do a little research and find the best one for what you are lighting up. Keep an eye out for down lighting opportunities – frequently a few properly placed down lights can light up problem areas very effectively. Subtle is almost always better. Most importantly, be pre-emptive in educating the customer on the difference and value between Professional Landscape Lighting and the Big Box store lighting packages. Maintenance contractors probably have even more potential revenue out there than anyone else. Most HOA’s have fairly extensive entry and common area lighting and they are frequently at a

probably not getting paid for it). It’s usually possible to add additional fixtures to systems that have been converted to LED. ALCA has recently initiated a series of nonmanufacturer specific lighting seminars that can be extremely helpful in giving you the basic information you need to pursue these potential revenue sources effectively. Look for additional workshops in the future which will also be instructed in Spanish. The lighting dollars are being spent out there and it is an increasingly larger percentage of the budget than it has been in the past. There is no reason they shouldn’t be spent with you. PLANTING

The Many Colors of Fall… Article Provided by Beth Gosnell, All Season Wholesale Growers

A

rizona’s higher elevations are home to many beautiful trees with spectacular fall color. A trip to the White Mountains or Flagstaff to see the Aspen leaves in the fall is a wonderful way to spend a weekend and see some breathtaking sites. But, down here in the desert, we actually have some great trees and plants that will give your yard or project fall color and something a little different than the usual plant choices. The Tucson area or slightly higher elevation than The Phoenix Valley offers even more choices of deciduous trees with lovely fall color. What if you could offer your customer something beautiful and create less leaf litter in the process? I can’t tell you how many times I have heard, “I want a tree that doesn’t make a mess.” Well, here is your answer. Trees that drop their leaves in the fall and bud out again in spring are a win/win! Evergreen trees and semi-evergreen trees (which make up the abundance of our tree choices) drop leaves all year long. Of course, some are cleaner than others. I would much rather clean up one big mess in November when the weather is nice and cool than sweep up leaves all year long. And, an added benefit is beautiful and interesting seasonal color. There are also some shrubs that can create a dramatic impact. One of my favorites is Nandina domestica – Heavenly bamboo – This shrub has made a recent comeback. Used extensively in the 80’s and 90’s and it is still popular due to its showy foliage, tiny white flowers and red berries. There are many cultivars that grow up to 8’ tall or dwarf varieties with a compact form. It is salt sensitive and needs an ample supply of water. My favorite use for it is against a red brick background. As the weather turns cool in fall, the leaves will turn red and even purple in winter. It is not recommended for full sun, but best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Vitis species – Ornamental or edible grape vines. This large sprawling vine is not used often enough in my opinion. There are many different varieties that offer beautiful fall color and some for residential use that grow delicious grapes. There is a variety grown locally by Mountain States Wholesale Nursery called ‘Roger’s Red” that has striking red leaves. If you plan to use a grape vine, give it plenty of room to spread. They are great for a trellised patio or pergola, where you need shade in the heat of the summer and sunlight in winter. Muhlenbergia species – ornamental grasses. I couldn’t talk about fall color without mentioning the grasses. There are many to choose from with many different attributes. My favorites are M. capillaris – Pink muhly – and M. rigens – deer grass. Like its name, Pink muhly has wispy plums that are pinkish red and sway in the wind. They are especially beautiful when the sun hits them just right. Deer grass has a plum that resembles wheat. They can take full sun but

do need an ample water supply. Unfortunately, so many of the grasses grown locally are sheared incorrectly and we all miss the chance to enjoy their unique offerings. You can always look at the Sustainable Landscape Management book for the proper care and maintenance of this beautiful grass. To finish up with my favorite trees… Obviously, the ornamental and edible fruit trees provide a nice show of color but the trees mentioned below are wonderful too.

Fraxinus species – Ash trees. The most commonly grown of the Ash trees in Phoenix are the various cultivars of Fraxinus veluntina. This tree has an upright habit and creates a large shaded area in summer with a bright golden yellow show in the fall.

My favorite for last would be the Pistacia chinensis ‘Red Push.’ This tree is a little slow to get started but can eventually reach a spread of 70-80 feet. The interesting bark, much sought after wide spreading canopy and the bright scarlet fall/winter color makes this tree just about perfect in my book. I hope this will give you some food for thought when helping your clients create an interesting and beautiful landscape. For more information, please contact Beth Gosnell at 602-509-7242.

SAFETY

Spray Equipment – Ignoring Problems is Not a Strategy Article provided by Andrew Greess, President of Quality Equipment & Spray

Destroyed Diaphragm Pump. By ignoring warning signs, this pump was a total (and expensive) loss. Note: the little orange pieces used to be a diaphragm.

M

any of the spray equipment problems we see in our repair shop are significantly worse than they need to be. In too many instances, spray techs have ignored problems in the hope that they will go away. As a business mentor once told me, “hope is not a strategy.” Spray equipment problems can be a serious safety issue because they often become chemical spills or chemical exposure for the technician. Here are some of the most common excuses we hear from technicians about why they waited to get a spray equipment problem fixed: • I didn’t know it was a problem. • I was too busy to get it fixed. • I thought my boss would get mad if I told him about it. • I know money is tight, so I didn’t think we should spend money on repairs. Much like the slow drip of your kitchen faucet, spray equipment problems ALWAYS get worse. They do not get better and they do not go away. Small problems inevitably become big problems. Big problems cost more, and take longer to fix (or to clean up in the case of chemical spills). Another issue is that these problems almost always occur during your busy season when you can least afford the downtime. Here is another spray equipment caveat: • Water (or oil or any other fluid) that is anywhere is it NOT supposed to be, is ALWAYS a problem and should not be ignored. • Some common spray equipment problems that get worse with time include: • Backpack sprayers and compressed air sprayers. Leaks, lack of pressure and

18

THE ALCA INFLUENCE

T November/December 2013

other small problems become major rebuilds because the tech ignored the problem or used force on a sensitive piece of equipment. • Spray pumps. Most power spray pumps have some way of telling the operator the pump requires attention. For example, gear pumps and roller pumps will begin to leak. Diaphragm pumps have a reservoir that shows the oil has turned a milky white. In each of these cases, if the pump is serviced promptly, a repair kit is usually all that is required. If the problem is ignored, we see many instances where the pump is a total loss. • Engines (or any piece of equipment) leaking oil (or other fluids) is a problem and must be dealt with promptly. • Hoses, fittings, o-rings and gaskets often begin a slow leak. If ignored, leaks become serious problems resulting in significant downtime and chemical spills.

look right or sound right, techs should tell their supervisor. Thank techs for reporting problems. If you scold a tech for reporting a problem, future problems will not be reported. Supervisors and managers should spot check trucks, inspect and test equipment. Here are a few quick inspection tips: • Cleanliness? (filthy equipment can be a good indicator of abuse and other problems) • Clean filter? • Fluids near or under equipment? • Operating pressure set too high? • Equipment properly secured? • Regularly clean out backpacks & compressed air sprayer to prevent debris from damaging systems. • Regularly check and clean filters to prevent system damage. • Perform preventative maintenance during slow periods to prevent problems and downtime. These few simple steps will reduce equipment problems, repair expense, downtime and missed appointments. Employees, managers, owners and customers will appreciate the effort. Andrew Greess is the President of Quality Equipment & Spray, which designs and builds custom weed control & landscape spray equipment solutions. He can be reached at andrew@qspray.com. For more information on this topic or to share your comments, visit www.SprayEquipmentBlog.com.

Don’t wait for problems to perform PM. Don’t let your equipment get this bad before seeking service.

Some easy steps to take to prevent these types of issues: Regular technician training to explain proper equipment operation techniques and trouble signs. Remember, just because you trained him on day one, doesn’t mean he is still doing it the way you want him to do it. Encourage technicians to report, rather than live with, spray equipment problems. The equipment doesn’t need to be obviously broken or leaking. Technicians know their equipment better than anyone. If it doesn’t

Fix hose reel swivel leaks promptly. Small leaks become big leaks and big leaks become chemical spills. Don’t live with leaks; fix them.

MEMBER MIXERS

Thank you to Russell Taylor with Live Earth Products for sponsoring the August ALCA mixer in Phoenix Russell discussed how Amending soils with humic acid impacts your business. Humic acids are the remnants of living organisms that have fully decomposed; think really old compost. Humic acids are a component of soil organic matter and for the most part are completely digested by soil microbes. Humus is the sequestered or geologic carbon that has built up in the topsoil over the centuries humic acids. They are typically described by their molecular weight and can be separated into three subgroups: fulvic, humic, and ulmic. So why amend a landscape with these organic acids? The construction and landscaping process disturbs the topsoil to the extent that much of the carbon that was stored in the topsoil is no longer where it should be. Often the approach is to add some compost or wood shavings to replace the lost soil organic matter. The major problem with that approach is these amendments are actively digested by the soil microbes. As much as 60 – 80% of a compost or manure is lost in the first year from the soil back into the air as carbon dioxide. Humic acids are quite stable and will persist in the soil for decades after application. Humic acids in a granular form are called humates. Commercially available humates are derived from mined ore deposits which are an accumulation of ancient plant material. Humates spread like a fertilizer and work well as a soil amendment. Broadcast applications of humate on established plants and turf work well but more soil incorporation is encouraged on new installations.

Humates have a long list of benefits because they contribute to passive soil organic matter. Typically humates are acidic and contain micronutrients and trace minerals. Plant nutrients locked up in the soil can be released with an application of humate. Because humates can release and store nutrients manufacturers will often blend humates with fertilizers. When purchasing humates, make sure to look at the label for additional ingredients that may have been added. Humates are used for the following purposes: adding stable organic matter, making a more efficient use of applied fertilizer and water, conditioning clay and sandy soils, and mitigate the effects of salts. Landscape professionals should consider adding humates during installation to enhance current soil amending practices. The long term effects of humates compliment the goals of conservation making them a wise choice for the property owner. Many cities are now including humates in their installations for improved resource utilization. For more information, you may contact Russell Taylor at (435) 749-0168 or email at russt@livearth.com.
