PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE
ALCA’s Mission Includes Giving Back
T
he Arizona Landscape Contractors’ Association is dedicated to helping landscape contractors by promoting continued education, effective business practices, networking opportunities, ensuring responsible legislation to enhance the professionalism of members and the public’s perception of landscape contractors …….and we must add, giving back to the community that has served us well. We know the value of being generous and community-minded…..seeing the bigger picture, volunteering and serving others. ALCA members welcome the opportunity to give back when opportunities arise. When we first walked the weed infested backyard of the Arms of Love Foster Home with Bob Franchetto, ALCA’s Director of Community Projects, we immediately knew that this was a project fellow ALCA members would jump in to help. The five bedroom, three bathroom home was in need of a complete renovation (inside and out) in order to house four young teens and their house mom. A beautiful landscape back yard would help provide an outdoor family atmosphere and place of peace that was lacking throughout their young lives. First, let’s talk about Arms of Love. Arms of Love Foster care ministry has provided children in foster care with safe, loving, Christ-centered homes, either on a temporary or permanent basis during a time when they are most in need. Arizona has approximately 850 teens leaving foster care annually with no permanent family and minimal independent living skills. Teens aging out of foster care are at high risk of pregnancy, homelessness, human trafficking, drug addiction, incarceration or even death. Look at these staggering statistics: • 1 in 4 foster youth that age out of the system will be incarcerated within 2 years. • 71% of young foster youth women that age out of the system will be pregnant by age 21. • Only 54% of foster youth that age out of the system earn their high school diploma. • Less than 3% of foster youth that age out of the system will earn a bachelor’s degree. • 1 in 5 foster youth that age out of care will become homeless within 1 year. • 50% of foster youth that age out of the system will be unemployed by age 24. Three of the main components to a successful adult transition are: at least one supportive adult mentor, affordable housing and education or employment. Arms of Love is providing supportive housing to young women between the
ages of 18-21 who are emancipated from foster care. Their goal is to provide them with housing, match them with lifelong connections through mentorship and support these young adults to help them become self-sustaining. And so this past June, ALCA adopted the Arms of Love community project and reached out to its members to help transform the backyard. With the generosity of time, resources, and spirit of the following individuals and companies, this project valued at $15,000 was made possible: • Bob Franchetto/Horizon Distributors – In addition to repairing and installing the irrigation system, through every step of the way, Bob managed the project from its inception to the last moment of completion in eight days. • Warren Runcorn/ABC Scapes was instrumental in assisting Bob Franchetto in managing the project and brought his team who provided labor for grading, planting, irrigation, and moving granite from the front to the back yard. • Beth Postma/All Season Wholesale Growers donated 25 five-gallon landscape plants. • Marty Monroy/Cutting Edge Curbing Sand & Rock donated the installation and materials of 117 ft of extended concrete curb as well as 17 tons of ¼” minus Madison Gold. • Matt Giordano/Landscaping Contractors donated three metal fabricated trellises. • Kim Kleski/Kleski & Associates created the conceptual landscape design. • Juan Contreras/ Desert Tree Farm donated two citrus trees. • Bonnie Mull/The Synthetic Grass Store donated 915 sq ft of Daytona 60 artificial grass and the 27 bags of silica sand for infill. • Tim Foraker/AZ Turf Masters donated the labor to install 915 sq ft of Daytona 60 artificial grass. • Doug Dickerson/A-Z Equipment donated the use of a bobcat for the project. Giving back is a vital part of a full and rewarding life. ALCA’s philosophy answers the question, “What could be more fulfilling than doing what you love to do while contributing to the quality of life of others within your own community?” Sincerely, Judy Gausman, CEO Marty Monroy, ALCA President

Some of the trends can be just as ridiculous as back in the day but a lot are really good choices that just have fallen out of favor or popularity. Here are a few that you might want to include in your next landscape plan. All of these suggestions are frost hardy and can take the summer heat. It does not need to be pruned and the foliage will give you beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red in the winter; it’s a great accent with red brick. It also has tiny red berries. Winter Overseeding Your Arizona Sod Lawn Article Provided: by Jay Danek, Mr. Wise Grass, West Coast Turf
A
s we head toward the end of summer, lawn care crews are preparing for overseeding to maintain green grass through the winter. First, let’s discuss the initial lawn prep. Let your lawn grow up 25-30% in height to provide more leaf density. Another bonus of maintaining your lawn at a higher height is that it will use less water, and when you scalp your lawn it will leave plenty of healthy new leaves for the spring. If you have a healthy lawn, it’s good to go through and lightly power rake or verticut the lawn at this time. This opens up the turf canopy and allows seed to get into the ground. If you normally keep your lawn at 1”, you would want to raise the height of your lawn over the next two weeks to around 1.25”. When the weather cooperates, you can then scalp the lawn slightly below your normal mowing height. Most rotary lawn mowers can be lowered to ¾”. Remember not all seed is created equal. Here are some tips to keep in mind when looking at a bag of seed. • The best material for winter overseed is perennial ryegrass. While it seems like the name annual ryegrass makes sense, it does not have the vigor, color, or density of perennial ryegrass. • Germination Rate – The germination rate will tell you how much of the seed is viable. If you pick up a bag with a 60% germination rate then you need 40% more seed to put down the correct rate. You want to find a bag with over 85% germination. • Weed Seed – This number should be zero. Any weed seed or inert matter is going to wreak havoc on your overseeded turf. • Often times blended ryegrass seeds are cheaper because they put different grades of seed in the bag. Some blends are very good seed and provide different plant protections, but some mix in lower grade seed. Remember ryegrass seed is priced by germination, weed seed, and quality of the seed. Therefore, if you’ve found a deal on seed, it’s not always your best bet.
Overseeding materials
• High quality perennial ryegrass seed. • Starter Fertilizer – When you pick up your seed, also pick up a starter fertilizer. Some good ones are Soil Burst 4-4-2, 11-52-0, or 6-20-20. • Second Fertilizer application -This can be applied after you have mowed the grass for the first time. Fertilizers to consider are 21-7-14, 11-52-0, or 6-20-20. • All of your sprinklers should be working and properly adjusted. Check all of the nozzles
after you scalp for any chips or dings that the mower may have caused by cutting shorter. • Power rake or verticutter.
Overseed Instructions
• Cut back your water 25% two weeks prior to overseeding. Stop all fertilizer applications four weeks prior to seeding. • Raise up the height of your lawn 25-30%. You do this so when you scalp the lawn it is not being mowed down to the dirt, instead you’re scalping to a manageable height for the turf, and it will not cause any injury to the turf in the spring. • Power rake or verticut the lawn. Do not set the machine to dig up new rhizomes from the soil. Your goal is to open the turf canopy. • After you power rake, mow up the clippings. The lawn mower works really well for picking up the grass. Next set the power rake a setting lower and do the same process in a different direction. This will open up the dense turf canopy and allow the seed to get into the grass plant. • Mow the clippings again. After the clippings have been cleaned up, set your mower to ¾” or ½” if you have a reel mower and scalp the lawn. The only reason you’re scalping is to keep the warm season grass from competing with the ryegrass seed. • As soon as the lawn is cleaned up, apply your starter fertilizer. You’re looking for a phosphorus application to help the seed. Some great fertilizers are 4-4-2, 6-20-20, or 11-52-0 to get your lawn started. • I like to keep my rocks and edges clean so I use a drop spreader. Apply perennial ryegrass at 10 pounds per 1000 SF around the perimeter of the lawn first. Do two passes to ensure the rotary spreader will not throw seed into the rocks. This is not necessary but it will keep the ryegrass from invading undesirable areas all winter. • Next apply your perennial ryegrass with a rotary spreader at 10-12 pounds per 1000 SF to the remainder of the lawn. If you want the best coverage you should apply 5-6 pounds of seed per 1000 SF in two directions. This is always the best approach but again not necessary. • You will have some seed on top of the grass surface but the majority should be inside the grass plant if you prepped your lawn correctly and opened up the canopy. You can use a broom to help any additional seed get into the plant. • Follow watering instructions. Some people cover their seed with mulch, but you can save your time, money and the smell in
your yard because this isn’t necessary. Mulch allows the seed to maintain moisture and keeps the heat in the plant but if you’re seeding in September/October there is plenty of heat. You don’t need to worry about the moisture either. Mulch doesn’t prevent birds from eating your seed and even if they do eat some seed you have already applied plenty of seed with the 10-12 pound/1000 SF rate.
Watering your overseed lawn
Week 1-2: Water 3x daily for 5-7 minutes per cycle. Make sure you don’t have ponding. If you do, lower the amount of water. I suggest watering around 8am, noon, and 4pm. Week 3: Water 2x daily for 12-15 minutes. Since the plant is very new at this time a morning and afternoon application is best. You can typically mow the lawn for the first time after 14 days. It’s best to let the grass dry down for several hours prior to making the first mow. Keep the mower set at a higher than normal height, do not scalp the grass. Week 4: Water 1x per day for 10-15 minutes. During this time frame you can mow every 5-7 days. Week 5: Water every other day 10-15 minutes. Mow your lawn every 5-7 days as needed and make one more application of Soil Burst 4-4-2, 21-7-14, or 15-15-15. Week 6 and beyond: Water every 2-3 days as needed until the temperatures cool off for the winter. During the winter you can stretch your ryegrass even longer between watering. I would suggest fertilizer applications every 28 days throughout the fall. When temperatures drop around freezing, it’s best to use liquid fertilizers to maintain turf vigor. ALCA MEMBER PROFILE IRRITROL
Irritrol
O
nly one major irrigation brand is totally dedicated to the professional contractor. That brand is Irritrol. Everything they design and manufacture goes to you. The pros. The ones who make their living installing and selling what Irritrol makes. Which means Irritrol doesn’t sell to big box stores or hardware centers. Since 1967, Irritrol has dedicated everything they do to just the pros. You’re the ones who built their company. You’re the ones who’ll keep building their company. And in Irritrol’s book, loyalty is a very big thing. Reliable performers in a strong, full-range lineup of Irritrol products. More choices. Same dependability. All to help your bottom line.
Valves
Installing valves is hard work. But luckily, Irritrol valves are reliable and easy to maintain. Irritrol valves have been the industry standard for over 50 years. Irritrol was the first to bring PVC, jar-top, and glass-filled nylon valves to irrigation. And Irritrol continues to lead the way with dependable valve products that make you more productive, including the new scrubber 100P-S series valve. Irritrol valves continue to be the installer’s choice for residential and commercial applications.
Rotors
With taller pop-up heights and automatic arc return, Irritrol rotors stand tall in the yard and in the industry. Add to that, easy installation and simple adjustment features and you can see why durable Irritrol rotors are rapidly becoming the contractor’s choice. Distinguished by their durability, reliability and ease of adjustment, Irritrol rotors are designed to satisfy the full spectrum of irrigation needs of contractors.
Professional Trade Warranty
Controllers
Irritrol Controllers have been the contractor’s choice for reliability and ease-of-use for decades. Leading the industry with over 50 models from which to choose and new control products are continually being introduced, such as the new revolutionary SMRT Logic and SMRTscape.com, Irritrol provides an edge over the competition, with full access to irrigation, lighting, water features and pumps from a single wireless cloud-based interface through the same controller/s you have installed for years. Irritrol sensors and remotes are designed to save time on installation, save water through automatic controller adjustments and ultimately save money. As for compatibility, the Climate Logic weather system and the new SMRT Logic works with the Irritrol KD2®, Rain Dial®-R, the Total Control®-R and the new blue generation of MC-E commercial controllers. Sprays: Quite simply—Irritrol I-PRO spray heads pop up, do their job, then disappear. Just like they’re supposed to. And they do it year after year, season after season. Durable construction makes Irritrol spray heads extremely reliable. And their design makes them easy to install and use. Compatible with Irritrol fixed nozzles and PRO-VAN nozzles, which feature the industry’s easiest arc adjustment, Irritrol I-PRO sprayheads offer both flexibility and affordability.
For over a half century, irrigation professionals have trusted Irritrol brand products to perform season after season, and Irritrol understands that you put your reputation on the line with every installation. That’s why Irritrol is willing to stand behind the entire line of Irritrol products with a full 5 year warrranty. So install Irritrol with the assurance that you’re backed by a company as reliable as the products it sells. Over a half century in business, countless relationships, Irritrol thanks you. In 2017, Irritrol celebrated 50 years of service to the irrigation industry. First and formost, that means 50 years of partnerships with professional contractors in the trenches every day. From the orginal 205 valve to the SMRT Logic Internet Gateway, Richdel R series to RainDial -R and everything in between, it is professional contractors like you that sparks innovation, drives quality improvements and keeps Irritrol strong in a very competitive space. In short, it is Irritrol’s partnerships that define their legacy. This principle affirms their core decision to stay out of the big box retail / DIY channels yesterday, today and tomorrow. It justifies their decision to maintain original valve and repair kits designs for backward compatibility to day one. It motivates Irritrol to deliver on a promise and innovate for a purpose. was very inexperienced not to mention much younger when I started All Season Wholesale Growers in 2005. I imagined being my own boss, making my own decisions and, basically, working hard towards my own goals, not those of someone else. Fourteen years later and looking back, I had no idea how difficult it can be when you are solely responsible to make all the decisions while building for the future. Fortunately, I didn’t have to do this by myself. I had a lot of help from so many people. Now, after some very prosperous years and reaching major milestones towards my goals, I reflect on how much I have learned and the blessings I never imagined when starting out on this journey. By far, the most rewarding part of my job is the people and the relationships formed over the years. It is a pleasure to greet customers who have been stopping in for years and chatting about family, the
I am so fortunate to have people to work with every day that are always laughing, singing and completely eager to help customers. They never complain and always have a smile for me or anyone that comes in. They are my family. I often joke that I have been with my lead manager, Jose, longer than my husband, Steve. All Season Wholesale Growers would not have succeeded this many years without the generosity of my fellow nurserymen and nurserywomen who have shared their insight and experiences to help me build a successful business. So many in our industry are eager to pass on information, share vendor contacts and techniques that are critical to healthy plants and trees. My competitors are also some of my best customers. Finally, many of you will remember my dog who passed in December, my constant companion, Canela. If you have ever been to our yard, you will remember how she was eager to greet each and every person and inspect the trailers or truck beds for any food wrappers that may have been left behind. She
loved everyone and never stopped looking out for me up until her last day. She is running free, chasing bunny rabbits in the big nursery in the sky. We surely do miss you Canela. ill & Usher was formed by Richard B Usher in 1995. Richard wrote Arizona’s Prompt Payment statute that was signed in to law in 2001. Numbers Speak Volumes.
Workers’ Compensation Rates in 2019-2020
Rates are down. Insurance companies across the board are earning 10% returns on Workers Compensation, yet they continue to underwrite accounts individually. With low unemployment, this presents leverage. If you have a high E mod, get it under control with solid guidance. Seek advice. We don’t encourage shopping the renewal among agencies because a good agency will do that task for you. Instead, seek a qualified agency who will leverage knowledge and relationship to conduct market due diligence on pricing. The Workers Compensation line can often be appetizing to new insurance companies – the wrong move to the wrong insurance company will get you dumped next renewal – and paying double what you deserve, without alternative.

Exclusive access to insurance markets saves dollars. Over two decades, Hill & Usher has saved clients millions of insurance premium dollars with exlusive programs, underwriting relationships and loss control. No Doubt About it: Commercial Auto Insurance is a Conundrum The problem with auto insurance premiums in Arizona is: (1) easy up front premium for insurance companies; (2) hiring difficulties that lead to unqualified drivers; (3) expensive auto repairs; (4) increase in tort activity for bodily injury and uninsured / underinsured motorist claims. The best managed fleets should expect an 8% increase in business auto insurance premiums – regardless of losses, history or careful management. Those landscapers who budget for business costs should wisely factor 10% premium increases for automobile insurance in to cost of doing business formulas at next renewal.

Thank you to Evergreen Turf for Sponsoring the ALCA June Mixer.
E
vergreen Turf was established in April of 1999 by Jeff Nettleton and Jimmy Fox as a small, friendly, locally owned and operated Arizona sod farm. The idea back then was to provide Arizona homeowners and landscape contractors with an elite, golf-quality product. Since then, Evergreen Turf has become the major sod provider not just for homeowners, and landscapers, but for Arizona’s demanding golf courses
and sports facilities. With more new golf courses and renovation projects than we can count, and thousands of commercial parks and home lawns installed, Evergreen Turf has become the major, locally-owned sod farm in Arizona. How did such a young company rise so quickly gain the confidence of an entire industry? The answer lies in Evergreen’s extraordinary people and an overriding commitment to our customers. Nowhere
can our neighbors in Arizona get better information on sod and turfgrass from friendlier, more knowledgeable people. We invite you to browse our website at www.Evergreenturf.com for the answers to your sod questions or call 480-4561199 if you don’t find what you are looking for. ALCA BULLETIN BOARD
ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT) Training Opens this Fall!
P
repare yourself and your business for a lower-water-use future by becoming an ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT). Water is life, and here in Arizona, water is not always treated as the precious resource it is. Shortages and rising costs dominate conversations about our water future, especially in our industry. The largest percentage of municipal water use goes to the landscape, so as landscape professionals, we have a duty to increase irrigation system efficiency, while optimizing water use for healthy and resilient plants. Today many of our landscapes waste amazing amounts of water – often using twice as much as the plants need – to mask inefficiencies in the systems. There are not enough qualified landscape professionals to properly maintain, troubleshoot,
repair and maximize the efficiency of these irrigation systems. This fall, ALCA will launch a training to prepare landscape professionals to earn the ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician designation. Hands-on activities throughout the training will focus on the skills and tools necessary to optimize the water usage and efficiency of existing irrigation systems. The program is not intended to cover primary irrigation design & installation.
The ALCA Cered Irrigaon Technician (ACIT) program consists of a 3 day training including hands‐on acvies focused on the opmizaon of water usage and the efficiency of exisng irrigaon systems.
