Greetings Conference Committee Chair Greeting

I

t is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 CASBO Annual Conference & California School Business Expo in beautiful

Sacramento! Schools throughout California are facing the most challenging budget year in history, and CASBO is facing those same challenges. This has had a profound effect on the planning process for this year’s conference. The 2010 Conference Committee worked tirelessly for the past year to make sure that professional development opportunities at the conference were maximized while, at the same time, costs were minimized. This was no easy task, but we believe the workshops that have been developed and the events that have been planned reflect Jeannie Goobanoff 2010 Conference Committee Chair Retired member

the essence of what it means to “do more with less!” Because of the uncertainty facing our schools, it has never been more important to keep up on the latest information about how to do our jobs better and more efficiently. Annual Conference is the place to do just that, and each of 170 pre-conference and conference workshops has been put together by the members for the members! The conference also provides a unique opportunity to learn from each other, grow in our collective knowledge, share our frustrations, and strategize and plan for our future. Welcome friends!

Section President Greeting

A

s the president of Sacramento Section, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Northern California and the state capital.

This year’s conference is full of opportunity – to learn, to connect

and to problem solve. You’ll be able to do all three by attending workshop sessions, listening to informative keynote speakers and participating in the many networking opportunities. Our annual conference is the place to take advantage of CASBO’s key benefit – leading-edge professional development. There is no other event that gives such access to top-quality training, the latest information on hot topics and best practices in school business. Please take advantage of all that the conference has to have to Kristi Blandford CASBO Sacramento Section President San Juan Unified School District

offer while you are in Sacramento. In times like these, you can’t afford not to. Thank you for your attendance and ongoing support of CASBO.

Pearl Iizuka, Elections Committee Chair Drum Café Keynote speaker

Bruce Jenner The Drum Café is a unique, hands-on approach to team building, learning and motivation that uses interactive drumming to draw parallels between what it takes to make music and what it takes to work with others in an organization. Started in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1966, Drum Café has made several evolutions - from a live restaurant performance to a corporate entertainment event which then became a Broadway show and evolved into a team-building exercise. The Drum Café interactive event is designed to break down barriers within organizations and develop unity in the workplace, all through a common experience with drumming. Participants literally experience first-hand the power of communication, harmony, synergy and team building through interactive drumming. The effect of drumming together is a synchronization of energy, unity, common vision and purpose. A musical background is not required to participate, as the universal language of music transcends the barriers, traditional or otherwise, that tend to come between us professionally as well as personally, the group finds. The Drum Café has performed at nearly 5,000 events in 19 countries over the past 10 years.

Monday Conference Sessions Child Nutrition

Technology

The Child Nutrition Committee is very active with California and Federal legislation. This session will give participants up-to-date information on current legislation. The session will also offer a toolkit for school nutrition directors to increase participation in the program through communication with school principals.

There are many ways to reduce costs—the easiest, reducing or eliminating spending, is usually not the best when it comes to technology. Reducing maintenance contracts, buying fewer or cheaper computers or network gear or delaying upgrade or refresh projects appear to be great ideas to financial decision makers who don’t understand the long-term fiscal impact of such decisions. Discussion will revolve around best practices toward lowering long-term and intermediate costs through the use of best practices, standardization, high-quality equipment and other methods that have shown actual cost reductions.

Sharon Ketcherside, President Presentation of CASBO Honor Roll Award Winner Jason Dorsey Jason Dorsey, nicknamed the “Gen Y Guy,” is a best-selling author, speaker and award-winning entrepreneur. After skipping his senior year in high school to enter college, Dorsey was motivated by an entrepreneur who spoke at his college and challenged him and his classmates to pursue a purpose more lasting than money or prestige. The challenge inspired Dorsey to write a book, “Graduate to Your Perfect Job,” covering what he learned through his journey from a small town in Texas to having prominent business leaders support him. More Generation Y-focused books and a few speaking engagements later, Dorsey emerged as a youth expert on NBC’s “Today Show” and ABC’s “The View.” Along the way, he earned the Austin, Texas, Under 40 Entrepreneur of the Year Award and launched a speaking career that has put him in front of more than 100 audiences a year since age 18. His goal: teaching people of all ages to take control of their futures by throwing away their excuses.
