president’s message Monterey, California

By Todd Finnell, CETPA President

W

elcome to one of our most popular CETPA venues…Monterey, California! Our valued members, exhibitors and guests will find CETPA 2012 one of the most rewarding and worthwhile experiences of the year, both personally and professionally. This year’s Conference theme is Rethink, Reshape, Redesign. We believe this theme is more important now than ever. Each year, the CETPA Conference allows us an opportunity to network with friends and colleagues in ways that can only be described as “invigorating” and “stimulating.” The relationships that form and evolve from year to year make us each more effective in our roles while contributing to the collective promise of technology in education. CETPA is our membership, and our members are CETPA. It is because of your participation and continued commitment to our goals that we continue to be the outstanding organization we are today. It has been a pure pleasure to serve as your CETPA president this past year. The volunteer board is nothing short of amazing, and I have never worked with a better group of people that genuinely care about our profession and the students we serve. These folks are passionate about our collective interests and made my term as president memorable. Thank you to each and every one of you! This year, CETPA took steps to strengthen and secure its future by investing in several long-term strategies. For starters, please join me in congratulating Andrea Bennett as she became our first official employee of the organization! Earlier this year, Andrea was hired as the full-time executive director of CETPA and will continue to provide proven leadership and direction for our Association. Additionally, the CETPA board spent considerable time this year developing a Strategic Plan for our organization that we believe will ensure that we continue to represent our members and their issues in a timely, professional and relevant manner. Some other noteworthy accomplishments this past year include the hosting of our first CETPA Summer Clinic, continued development of the CAMSA partnership, and improvements to our highly successful CTO mentor program. Thank you for joining us in Monterey for CETPA 2012 as we Rethink, Reshape, Redesign!

52nd Annual CETPA Conference

CETPA 2012: Rethink, Reshape, Redesign By Brianne Meyer, CETPA President-Elect

W

e are excited to return to Monterey this year for our 52nd Annual Conference. This year’s theme—Rethink, Reshape, Redesign—captures the promise and challenges of education technology. We are in the midst of a shift. Outside of education, the explosion of mobile computing and consumable software pressures IT organizations to be more adaptive, more personalized. The national move away from skill-based standards to the Common Core demands dramatic changes to instruction and the application of technology. Meanwhile, our organizations face ongoing and deep budget cuts. Technology has never had more potential to drive change in education. To realize this promise, technology professionals must rethink every standard, every policy and every plan. CETPA 2012 features dynamic speakers, informative sessions, a sold-out exhibitor show, hands-on learning opportunities, side-by-side technology shootouts, and fantastic networking events to help you Rethink, Reshape, Redesign your organization. The beautiful backdrop of Monterey sets the stage for an outstanding week ahead. Karen Cator, director of the Office of Education Technology at the U.S. Department of Education, kicks of the conference with a national perspective on technology’s role in our schools. Her career has spanned the private and public sector, from Alaska to Washington, D.C. She is a remarkable advocate and leader for education technology, and its potential to reshape learning environments for students. On Wednesday morning, CETPA welcomes the “World’s Funniest Guitar Virtuoso” to launch us into the conference with great music, comedy and wisdom. Mike Rayburn has been a regular headliner at Carnegie Hall. In

This year’s theme is “CETPA’s Got Real Talent.” Come experience great food, drink, celebrity judges and a little comedy as we put on a show unlike any other in CETPA’s history. Continue to find inspiration throughout the conference in our new “Featured Speakers” strand this year. CETPA has connected with some of the most innovative minds and accomplished speakers in education technology to bring you a dynamic series of sessions. Join Hall Davidson, Ben Bajarin, Ron Mancabelli, Jon Bernstein and Justin Patchin in the Steinbeck Forum to get a glimpse into the future of our field. As always, CETPA brings you more than 100 excellent breakout sessions, with best practices and lessons learned from your peers. This year includes sessions devoted to classroom technology, cloud-based services, solid infrastructure and leadership. If you are looking for a more hands-on or technical experience, join us in any one of our more than 40 hands-on labs. This year’s labs include deep dives into desktop and server virtualization, mobile device management, online course creation, website development, directory services and PowerShell scripting. Visit the labs to get access to the training long after the conference. Find the right solution for your organization with one of our vendor partners. Attend sessions with CETPA’s Affiliate Advisory Council to learn how to form strong public-private partnerships and maximize funding opportunities. Experience Thursday’s Exhibitor Show and evaluate more than 200 potential solutions and implementation partners. This year, the CETPA Technology Shootouts return after an outstanding premier in 2011. Based on your input, we have pulled together a series of shootouts designed to support your organization’s exploration of mobile computing, 1:1 initiatives, and Bring-Your-Own-Device strategies. Visit the Technology Pavilion in the Portola Room to see the best solutions side-by-side, including network access control, mobile device management, tablets, and wireless. CETPA 2012 features amazing content and outstanding speakers. We know that the greatest value in the conference is the time to connect with your colleagues and peers. From the Opening Reception to the closing Golf Tournament, the conference is packed with opportunities to connect and relax. As always, CETPA provides a light breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the week. And, every night features receptions or hospitalities to extend the conference well into the evening. Welcome to CETPA 2012!

Session Title: From Trees to Bits: Moving Education into the 21st Century Location: Steinbeck Forum Time: 9:00 am - 9:50 am Speaker: Hall Davidson, Discovery Education Description: For generations, students lived with textbooks with “print DNA”: linear, undifferentiated and non-dynamic. The gateway to most learning was decoding linear text—a tough task for human brains. Now new “techbooks” arrive with cloud-based media DNA: fluid, differentiated, embedded and rich as the web. Moving classroom practice more deeply into digital resources provides benefits for differentiation, extended learning, remediation, and accountability. The “book” moves far beyond text—it can read to students, show them animations to augment print definitions, change languages, font size, grade level and more. But how can we ensure that classroom practice will be ready for that transition? What should leaders monitor or model? Because going digital not only taps the cloud, it changes the whole game. The book becomes its own backpack with encyclopedias, microscopes, cameras and more. Understand how the new generation of tablets (like the iPad and its cousins) bring a deep and immediate connection to learning and the new obligations to make our institutions ready. The result is a multi-phase infrastructure upgrade, from data center redesign to unified computing to wireless networking, which delivers a technology experience so seamless that teachers, students, and administrators don’t think about the technology itself—only about what they want to do with it. UMRA is the solution of choice for school district network administrators searching for a quick, simple and cost effective method for managing the import, update, and deletion of hundreds or thousands of student user accounts throughout the school year. UMRA dramatically reduces time required to manage Active Directory or e-Directory, giving IT administrators more time to focus on higher priority projects.

• Automated Identity Management • Cloud Provisioning • Student Information System Synchronization • Create User Name, Home Directory, Groups, E-mail, etc. • Out-of-the-Box Connectors for downstream systems • Self-Service Reset Password Management • Office365 and Google Apps Integration

FEATURED CLIENT: Chino Valley Unified School District manages over 34,000 staff and student user accounts. The district approached Advanced Toolware to replace a manual and inefficient user management process with a more automated system that would handle the demands of a large network with minimal staffing. The User Management Resource Administrator allowed Chino Valley to synchronize systems such as Active Directory, Aeries SIS, Renaissance Learning and Riverdeep to automate the life cycle management of network user accounts. The project streamlined the operation and increased overall IT efficiency.

Conference Information

52nd Annual CETPA Conference

First Time Visitors The conference is set in a unique place. Steps from downtown Monterey and Fisherman’s Wharf where there are fabulous restaurants and shops, the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center are also on the water with majestic views of the marina and bay. You can usually hear and see the sea lions and otters lounging on the wharf and swimming in the bay. Adjacent to the hotel is the Monterey History & Maritime Museum with fascinating photographs and historic papers describing the history of the area. A short walk or taxi cab ride gets you to Cannery Row, the Aquarium and more shops and restaurants. If you want to get back to nature, take a stroll on the beach or head up to Jack’s Peak County Park for a hike or horseback riding. Get your exercise by renting a bicycle and troll around town or if you want to be in the water, rent a kayak at Del Monte Beach and head out into the bay. Last but not least, there is golf. Some of the most beautiful courses exist in the Monterey area. A best kept secret is the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. This course has amazing views and is less expensive than the more famous courses. For more information, go to www.seemonterey.com.
