MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Dear Friends, The Antilles Board of Trustees is pleased to introduce the 2022-2023 Annual Report. We extend heartfelt appreciation to all of the families, alumni, and friends of the school who gave their time, talent, and treasure in support of our school community. Your generosity supports the school’s progress and enriches the experience of every Antilles student. We are also incredibly grateful for our Head of School, Shannon, whose optimistic, transformational, inclusive, and tireless leadership ensures Antilles School remains a premier educational institution in the Virgin Islands. She is joined in this dedication to mission and growth by our phenomenal faculty and staff. The Board recently approved a new Strategic Plan. In partnership with Shannon Harris, we undertook a comprehensive analysis of the whole health of Antilles, which resulted in a heightened focus on faculty and student resources, diversity and inclusion, facility maintenance and enhancement, and financial stability and growth. Once again, we owe members of the school community – students, families, teachers, administrators, and alumni – a debt of gratitude for participating in this process through in-depth surveys last year. That feedback proved foundational to our final plan. Stay tuned for the publication of the Strategic Plan in the near future. Your support is vital to ensure Antilles’ success well into the future. With gratitude, Antilles School Board of Trustees
Antilles School by Karen Bertrand
MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Friends, Since 1950, Antilles School has prepared students to be confident and curious learners, ready for college, career, and life. The generosity of our donors has been instrumental in realizing this legacy. Like most independent schools, Antilles raises money to live our mission and to support growth. The 2022-2023 Giving Report spotlights successful giving campaigns that sustain campus life, academic innovation, community engagement, and transformational experiences. It was a wonderful year of coming together to celebrate our community on Founders' Day, and at the Fall Fest, the Holiday Bazaar, and our carnival-themed Spring Gala. The success of these events allows us to invest in professional development and continuing education opportunities for faculty and ensure accessibility to increase our student body and provide social and civic benefits to all. Your gifts enable us to shape the future as we nurture the leaders of tomorrow and launch graduates ready to positively impact and build their communities. In collaboration with our Board of Trustees, the leadership team and I are building the framework of a new strategic plan – a vision that both recognizes the changing needs of our community and draws strength from the fundamental values that have kept us anchored as an institution of educational excellence. We are proud of who we are and excited about what Antilles is becoming. I’m honored to lead Antilles School and I am thankful that you are a part of Antilles’ story. In partnership,
Shannon Harris Head of School
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT
Dear Members of the Antilles Community, As I wrap up my first year as Director of Advancement, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude and pride in being a part of Antilles School. Having started my role in August 2022, I cannot express enough appreciation for the way this community has welcomed me and my family. It is my pleasure to present this Annual Report with highlights from the 2022-2023 fiscal year and with grateful recognition of the alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, and business and corporate partners who provided generous support for our school. To our generous donors, your unwavering financial contributions have made a lasting impact, fueling our initiatives and bolstering our ability to provide enriching opportunities for our students. Your belief in our mission is inspiring. Throughout the year, our dedicated team and volunteers demonstrated a tirelessness and passion that proved a driving force behind the success of our events, programs, and campaigns. Their collaboration, guidance, and support were instrumental in helping us meet our goals. Together, we have been and remain dedicated to elevating our school and empowering our students. As we look ahead, I am excited about the opportunities that await us and the positive impact we can create together. Thank you for being an integral part of this incredible journey.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Hugh Arnold Director of Advancement

STEAM education - both in and out of the classroom - is essential for fostering creativity and problem-solving skills in students, preparing them to tackle the complex challenges of the future.
During a visit to campus, Head of School Shannon Harris connected Professor Donald Stanford with Middle and Upper School Science students.
Reaching for the Stars As a child in the late 1950's and '60's, Professor Donald Stanford lived near the airport on St. Thomas and grew up watching the sun, moon, and stars rise in the east. To see them clearly, his parents had given him a pair of binoculars and as he observed, he developed a genuine interest in astronomy that blossomed over the years into a full-fledged hobby. Though his career went in a different direction - he's "over the moon" for anything electronic, tech, or computer science related - he credits his professional development to the careful attention of his mentor, Richard Spenceley '78, who helped him earn his HAM radio operator license at the age of 14. "That charted my entire course," Professor Stanford, who attended Antilles from Kindergarten through sixth grade, shared "I was always interested in anything to do with science, but one day coming down Bunker Hill, I saw the tower there with its antennae and it belonged to Richard, who my mother said had a short radio system with which he could talk to people all over the world." Hoping to spark the same sense of scientific curiosity in a new generation of Antilles students, Professor Stanford decided to donate one of his telescopes, along with several astronomy books, and was connected to Head of School Shannon Harris through alumni parent and former Trustee Suzanne Robinson.
Bringing it to campus this Spring, he spent hours assembling the powerful MaksutovCassegrain model with the help of teachers Adam Quandt and Jessica Francisco. Along with being a resource to current science students, the scope will be an added tool for sixth-graders to use as they begin studying earth science with a new astronomy component. Now retired, Professor Stanford still teaches computer science at Brown University and, among other things is a founding member of GTECH Corporation (renamed IGT Global Solutions) and currently serves as its Chief Innovation Officer and Technology Fellow. In 1999, he received the Black Engineer of the Year Award for Professional Achievement, along with the Honorable Thurgood Marshall award for community service from the NAACP. He added the Brown Graduate School's Distinguished Graduate award and the R.I. Professional Engineer's award for Community Service in 2002. In 2009 he was elected to the Lottery Industry Hall of Fame by the Public Gaming Research Institute.

Trustee Giving 100% of our trustees consistently give, and many former trustees continue to support our school. Leadership gifts get a campaign off to a strong start and set an example of generosity for the entire community. Schools know that only a few families have the capacity to make substantial contributions toward a goal; if you’re among those few, you have a special opportunity to advance your school’s mission to transform lives.

Family Giving It’s hard to imagine a more powerful team than school and parents working together for the good of children. Families’ commitment to Antilles School creates a legacy of excellence and empowerment that will impact generations of students to come. Families who give today help to make sure that the school is there for children 10, 20, and 30 years from now. High participation is a huge vote of confidence - an important sign that shows support for the school’s mission. This reasoning leads many families to choose their school as their philanthropic priority. They know their gifts are an investment that truly pays off. The Annual Fund helps pay for everything from faculty salaries and professional development opportunities to new curriculum initiatives, from financial assistance programs to technology maintenance and upgrades. It helps Antilles attract and retain a talented and committed faculty and provides support for extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, arts initiatives and other programs.

WOW! Our 22-23 three-day Jogathon raised more than $11,000 thanks to the support of our families, alumni, and friends who stepped in to sponsor our students. It was wonderful to see our community rally around the event, which directly benefits the expansion of Early Learning Center and Lower School programs, materials, and resources.
Learning experiences that expand beyond the classroom, utilizing campus spaces such as our theatre and courtyard, not only enrich students' education but also foster a sense of creativity and engagement.
A Day At the Races Sponsors CC1 Virgin Islands Goldvey Consulting Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands Spyglass Capital, LLC Smock Law St. Thomas Social The launch of our Kentucky Derby-inspired fundraiser, "A Day at the Races," was a resounding success! This event provided live race day coverage, and captivating entertainment by the Antilles School Gig Band and Dion Parson’s 21st Century Band, creating an unforgettable experience for our attendees. It was a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together, reconnect with friends and donors, and engage with our alumni. The invaluable support from our in-kind partners, including CC1 Virgin Islands, Yacht Haven Grande and St. Thomas Social, played a pivotal role in making this event possible. Their generosity in providing such a stunning venue exceeded our expectations, and we're already looking forward to the possibility of returning next year!

The annual Duck Derby returned in-person at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, organized by the Antilles School Sailing team and a dedicated group of family volunteers. Along with fun games and activities for younger attendees, the finale included the release of more than 2,500 rubber ducks, which were sold to raise funds that directly support our team's travel to competitions, enabling our dedicated athletes to represent our school with pride while honing their skills on a broader stage. In an increasingly interconnected world, this fundraiser not only helps keeps the team “afloat” but also reinforces the values of teamwork, perseverance, and community support that are at the heart of our mission and core values.
