When we enrolled our son at Antilles for ninth grade, we were thrilled to discover our daughter was eligible for the first Toddler Learning Center (TLC) class. Nineteen years later, she's heading into her senior year of college, our grandson just finished TLC, and our son and daughter-inlaw Antilles grads who met there are now teachers. Antilles has become more central to our lives than we ever imagined This sense of community is shared by many Alumni stories reveal how Antilles sparks educational growth, creativity, and exploration. That's why my husband and I support the school, especially in the performing arts, faculty development, and scholarships Antilles is truly a special place.

As both alumni and parents, it's been incredible to watch our children, Ella (8th) and Thomas (4th), thrive at Antilles School. Ella absolutely loves the challenging curriculum and is passionate about the theater program. For Thomas, the growth has been even more profound he's overcome reading and writing challenges and has really blossomed into a confident student. The other night during bedtime prayers, Thomas said he was thankful for his school and teachers, and honestly, we can't think of a better endorsement than that!

My son Kassa's growth at Antilles was remarkable He grew more confident each year, achieving things he once thought were beyond his reach From being accepted to 13 colleges to earning awards in History and AP US Government and Politics, his pride in these accomplishments will carry him far. Through all the challenges, including the pandemic, Antilles remained a constant source of support. This unwavering commitment is why I kept him enrolled through high school I'm also grateful for the financial aid we received and look forward to the day we can give back. The Heart of Antilles' Creative Spirit and Community
Tucked away on the Antilles School campus, Prior Jollek Hall is more than just a theatre. It's a space that fosters creativity, collaboration, and connection, both within the school and throughout the broader Virgin Islands community.
With its 252 seats, this intimate venue offers a special setting for performances, concerts, and events that showcase the talents of Antilles' students while strengthening the school's ties with the wider community.
For Antilles Theatre Director Megan Elliot, Prior Jollek Hall embodies the school's mission of fostering educational excellence, creativity, and community. "Having a professional venue like this on campus sends a powerful message," Elliot said. "It shows our students that their work is valued and that the arts are an important part of their education."
The theatre has hosted countless school performances, where students take center stage, developing the confidence and skills they will carry with them into future endeavors. From Middle School students experiencing theatre for the first time to Upper Schoolers refining their craft, Prior Jollek Hall offers a platform for all to collaborate, tell stories, and embrace the creative process
"Getting to teach in a theatre like this is so important to our school's mission. Students are exposed to a professional environment that allows them to experience what it's like to create and share their stories onstage," Ms. Elliot explained.
But the hall is not just a space for Antilles students. It also serves as a gathering place for the wider community. From partnerships with local churches, whose members regularly attend school events, to collaborations with technical theatre experts such as Denise Humphries from the University of the Virgin Islands and sound designer Calvin Jones, Prior Jollek Hall bridges the gap between education and the local arts scene

Prior Jollek Hall's beginnings are rooted in a broader vision for Antilles School - part of a four-year "Imagine the Possibilities" Capital Campaign launched in the Spring of 1999 with the goal of raising $6 million for essential facilities like the theatre and library, while also creating an endowment for student scholarships and faculty enrichment. “We believed that the future of the Virgin Islands lay in the education of its young people,” Neil reflected. “Investing in these spaces was investing in that future.”
An initial $1 million gift from Neil and Trudie Prior secured the naming rights for the theatre, which honors the couple's fathers, Cornelius Prior and Solomon Jolleck. “I always admired Trudie's father, a Holocaust survivor, and my father, who was the only one in his family to go to college," he said. "It felt fitting to honor the fathers who shaped us."
The hall officially opened its doors in 2007 with a grand performance by the iO Quartet, a New York-based string group, marking the start of a new chapter for Antilles School. The hall was envisioned as a multi-functional space for concerts, theatre, and school gatherings a vision realized by the generosity of the Priors and other major contributors like Ricardo and Josefina Charaf, Jim Fail, Peter and Patricia Gruber, Bob Schmidt and Kim Holdsworth, Kevin and Michele Cogan, and Bart Kavanaugh and Betty Saks.
Prior Jollek Hall transforms into a vibrant community arts hub during the year, a platform for concerts, school plays, and the Met Opera, among other things. This year, the addition of the VI Contemporary Fine Art & Water Island Music Festival also offered an incredible weekend of music, creativity, and celebration. The highlight? A surprise 90th birthday tribute to Neil Prior during the opening night festivities, making opening night even more unforgettable. And since its opening, Prior Jollek Hall has become a vital cultural hub, attracting not only local performances but international talent. One of the hallmark events is the Water Island Music Festival, which expanded this year to include an art component. Neil Prior celebrated his 90th birthday on its inaugural night, reflecting on how the hall has evolved into a centerpiece of the community. “It's amazing to see how the space has grown to bring the community together, just as we envisioned,” he said.
Meanwhile, through a partnership with the Forum, the space regularly hosts performances by worldclass artists, offering Antilles students unique opportunities to engage directly with professionals. For Neil Prior, the evolution of Prior Jollek Hall has been deeply rewarding "Watching this space become what we dreamed of an educational, cultural, and creative hub has been one of the greatest joys of my life," he said. From its inception to its role today as a vibrant center of arts and education, Prior Jollek Hall continues to be a testament to the lasting impact of community investment and a shared vision for the future of Antilles School.
One of the standout performances this year was by Grammy Award-winning quintet Imani Winds. During their visit, Upper School Jazz and Symphonic Band students had the rare opportunity to meet with the musicians, receiving advice and feedback on their own performances Bassoonist Monica Ellis and clarinetist Mark Dover shared their journey as musicians, emphasizing the importance of staying true to one's creative passions. "We are always searching and advocating for inspiration," Dover said, encouraging students to remain curious and open in their musical pursuits. Imani Winds' assembly delved into the rhythms of Afro-Cuban culture, adding another rich layer to the educational experience for Antilles students.

Remembering Marcia '69
Marcia Jane Horwitz '69, who passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023, lived a life that touched many through her work, music, and deep connection to Antilles School
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Marcia's journey led her to the island of St Thomas, where she attended Antilles School and formed lifelong friendships with fellow “Ancient Antilleans.” Her love for the school and the community never faded, and she often spoke about how much the island shaped her, describing it as “a paradise that made me who I am today.”
After leaving the sunny shores of St Thomas for the cold winters of Worcester, Mass , Marcia attended Clark University, where she majored in music. Though she eventually settled in Richmond, Va., her heart always remained tethered to the Virgin Islands She stayed deeply involved with Antilles, attending reunions and relishing her time with old friends, most recently celebrating their 50th reunion in 2019.
Marcia's commitment to Antilles went beyond nostalgia. Year after year, she remained a dedicated supporter of the school's giving campaigns, always eager to give back to the place she credited with shaping her values and sense of self. Whether it was contributing to annual funds or participating in special projects, Marcia's generosity was a constant.
In her own words, Marcia once reflected, "Antilles gave me more than just an education it gave me a sense of belonging." It is a sentiment that will resonate with all who knew and loved her, ensuring that her spirit will always be a part of the Antilles community she so dearly cherished.
Her longtime friend and classmate, Jane Kilgour, remembered Marcia not only as a brilliant musician but as a deeply compassionate person. "Marcia was someone who radiated warmth and generosity in everything she did Her laugh was infectious, and her commitment to her work and her friendships was unwavering," Jane said. In 2023, Jane donated to the Antilles Founders' Day campaign in Marcia's honor, reflecting the depth of their bond and the mutual love they had for their alma mater.
Jane recalled that no matter where Marcia's journey took her, she spoke fondly of Antilles and the island community. "She used to say that Antilles wasn't just a school it was home, a place where she learned to be herself and where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime "
