For me it was a unique experience to be in Mumbai and to work with graphics. It also helped to increase my interest in graphics as I have few plans for my future career. Synopsis To gain Industry Experience To understand the functioning and working conditions of an advertising company

At the beginning of the internship I formulated several learning goals, which I wanted to achieve: To understand the functioning and working conditions of an advertising company; to see if this kind of work is a possibility for my future career; to use my gained skills and knowledge; to get fieldwork experience/collect data in an environment unknown for me; to get experience in working in with people from another culture; to enhance my communication skills; to build a network, to get an in-depth understanding of the entire design process ,to understand the various marketing strategies,to understand a designers role in an industry,to learn about the organizing of a research project (planning, preparation, permissions etc.),To learn about research methodologies (field methods to analyze data).

GOALS

Introduction This report is a short description of my two month internship carried out as compulsory component of the B Des. Since I am interested in graphics; the work was concentrated on the advertising work including branding, designing advertisements, letterheads, visiting cards etc.

At the beginning of the internship I formulated several learning goals, which I wanted to achieve: • To understand the functioning and working conditions of an advertising company; • To see what is like to work in a professional environment; • To see if this kind of work is a possibility for my future career; • To use my gained skills and knowledge; • To see what skills and knowledge I still need to work in a professional environment; • To learn about the organizing of a research project (planning, preparation, permissions etc.)

• To learn about research¬h methodologies (field methods to analyze data) • To get fieldwork experience/collect data in an environment unknown for me; • To get experience in working in with people from another culture; • To enhance my communication skills; • To build a network.

The internship was carried out within the organization morphy creations from 2 June to 28 July (8 weeks).

This internship report contains my activities that have contributed to achieve a number of my stated goals.

In the following chapter a description of the organization Morphy Creations and the activities is given. After this a reflection on my functioning, the unexpected circumstances and the learning goals achieved during the internship are described. Finally I give a conclusion on the internship experience according to my learning goals.

Industry’s profile Morphy Creations is an advertising company with office in Mumbai. It was founded in 2013 with the aim of being the best advertising company in India.

The first interesting thing about Morphy Creations is how it has grown to become a one of the recognized advertising companies in Mumbai in a year’s time. From its beginning it has expanded its customer base to the international level. It continues along its goal of providing quality solutions to all its customers. They specialize in designing flyers, brochures, catalogs, business card designs, logo, packaging, label, signage, banner, poster with specialty printing and finishing. With a staff of over 8 killed designers, Morphy Creations offers the best solutions for advertising.

Morphy Creations’ clients include AFT Aqua Ansh, Atlantis Cabins, AVLOK, Aqua Care, and Bright Kitchen. Cool Aqua, Dr.Kunal’s Physiotherapy and fitness, BOX Desi Food Company, Find ur Homes, GCC Hotel and Club, Jawed Habib, M.H.Travels, MINT Pure Water Plants, NUBAR, Neelam-e-Punjab, PEPL, Pro+Fit Functional Fitness Center, Vikas Marwah’s Hair and Beauty.

Morphy Creations build its culture deep rooted in its Core values Quality, Accountability, Personal Growth and Discipline.

Once again, a strong emphasis is placed within the company to nurture their values, and as Trainees, this values and their importance was a recurring theme in out induction. Even at general staff meetings, examples of people acting out these values were presented and applauded. This great value orientation is I believe one of their greatest strength and something that should be continued and encouraged.

This section describes the main divisions of Morphy Creations, which can be used express what Morphy Creations means and its main functions. Morphy Creations operates mainly under three divisions each covering different domain. The three divisions are described shortly here, exploring what each divisions are all about, what functions they add to the overall organization as well taking a look at some of the major milestones and outstanding achievements of each of them.

It is a varied role that includes planning, advertising, public relations, event organization, product development, distribution, sponsorship and research. The work is often challenging and fast-paced.

My Internship at Morphy Creations was intended to be here and I had lot of experience in this lovely office environment. I got to know some new technologies and also started to work on them.

Role of the Director-

Print Unit-

The director and the co-director of the company Mr. Abhiskek Singh brings new projects to the company .Further the design team starts with the designing part of the project after doing a thorough research.

Morphy creations have their own printing unit. But sometimes depending on the requirements they do outsource printing their products but most of the times it is done in-house. Mainly 2 people would control the whole process.

Print unit does the careful selection of the material to be used and then the printing happens. There are two other employees who are responsible for the delivery of the final product according to the negotiated time. Delivery at the right time is of prime importance to them.

The design process followed in the company was almost similar to what we learn and apply in our academic projects. Once the company gets a project, the first thing they do is set up a meeting with the client wherein they dicuss not only the objective the client wants but also they figure out the neccessary smaller details which are neened to work out in terms of design like if the client has a rough picture or any key points he wants or the color schemes he wants. Here the bulk order is taken, advance payment is done.

Next step is when the project comes to the company, the design head passes it on to the designers and conducts a meeting with them where he gives all details about the project and also they dicusss some indeas which might come while discussion. Other designers also sometimes join in in these discussions which give the head desiginer a wide variety of approaches.

The next step is where the preliminary research is done. Inspirations are taken from existing designs and the theme and mood is decided accordingly. Then sketches are done, because some new elements might emerge out and understanding of layout is better and concepts are derived.

After this, a few concepts are finalised and presented to the client wherein the client also might give a few suggestions which are implemented in the later stage or it goes for testing. One sample is printed and if all is fine it goes for bulk printing.

PROJECT FLOW The project is generally brought up by either the director of the company or the HR manager. New projects are then given to the designers , which is carefully judged by the HR and the design head as to whom it has to be assigned. Then, the designers have every alternate days meetings with the design head to show their work and progress. The design head also conducts meeting with each designer and together they brainstorm ideas.

Once the designer has come up with adequate designs , they are carefully selected by the designer head and forwared to the director to conduct a meeting with the client. Once, a design is selected it is revised and then careful selection of material is done. Material selection is handled very causiously because material cost is very important. The budget is generally given before hand by the client. So, the advertising agency has to make a wise decision which fulfils the clients need as well as give up a good profit margin to them.

Printing quality is also very important when it comes to clients satisfaction. though the company sometimes outsources the printing facility, they still create a good margin beacuse of their contacts.

The organization Morphy Creations Morphy Creations, founded in 2013, is an independently owned and run business. They are a small but specialized team with wide experience and expertise in the industry. From design concept to the finished article, being able to provide every single aspect of the marketing mix in-house gives them control over quality, timing and of course, budget. When it comes to printing, they’ve got the experience, know-how and technology to give quality digital & offset printing – on time and on budget!

Knowing their customers often have deadlines to meet, they understand the importance of on time delivery. They specialize in ensuring print products look as professional as possible ensuring they can focus on core business. They do it all. They provide catalog design, catalog printing, Brochure Design, Visiting Cards, Hoardings, Banners, Pamphlets and all sorts of Printing and designing. They have a good team of designers through their years of production experience they’ve refined the design process giving the best catalog design for marketing.

For advertising companies the duration is one of the main factors that determines the scope and result of the projects. To be able to carry out projects of several days, but also projects of several weeks, sufficient external support is needed. Each designer has its own criterion’s for applying projects. The designers are responsible for the different parts in a project: the collection of data, the analysis and designing and writing/presentation.

Material Research for samples

Brochures are flexible, portable and effectively visual platforms for presenting information. Business oriented, they can be used with the same success for branding, for identity or for easier presentation of facts. A brochure can be anything from a few pages to larger, booklet-like formats. In digital format they can be deployed in a cost effective way in PDF format or in other popular formats. In print they can be placed on paper of varied quality, black and white or full color, depending on the budget intended.

Format and number of pages

1. In print, the number of pages is very important. The printing cost is determined by the quantity of brochures you order, materials and ink used as well as the covers aside. Generally it is best to order glossy covers for brochures where the number of pages is larger, exceeding 12 pages. This will draw more attention to the brochure and you can save money on the interior pages, by having them printed on regular paper, color or black and white.

2. Avoiding a bulky brochure is also very important.

Therefore, if you have a lot of pages that require printing you should avoid weighty paper. There are different types of paper that can be glossy and the larger the brochures, the thinner the pages should be.

3. For brochures of only a few pages, heavier glossy paper can be used for the entire material, of course, keeping an eye on the total cost of manufacturing.

For digital brochures, you should always check that the quality of the compressed document is not far from that of the original one.

4. With digital brochure paper is no longer a factor.

The choice is between formats, and one of the best ones to use is PDF. The PDF format is an industry standard in that it is readable directly from most browsers, most of the time even without requiring extra plugins or other add-ons. The number of pages is dictated by the actual content, and the development budget. All pages should contain full color visuals, and even if you develop a text heavy brochure, you should make the effort to create a good, esthetically pleasing material.

The current trend in brochure design is minimalism.

Avoid borders, three-dimensional graphs and other such heavy visuals. Keep things simple, use readable and well formatted fonts and never include anything that does not serve a purpose. And, as a final advice, keep your audience in your mind. Ask yourself how the brochure tackles your audience; make sure you create a material that will resonate with the specific group for which it is designed both in terms of content as well as in terms of visual design.

How to distribute

Distribution of brochures is more of a problem when it comes to paper prints. You have to define your target audience better and deploy the materials to them individually. For mailing deployment, the dimensions have to fit a standard envelope and you should also keep the weight down, to avoid extra costs.

Online, the distribution effortless costly and targeting your audience is also a less challenging issued.

You can distribute your brochure free for all or specific to those that subscribe to your service. As free giveaways accompanying an online purchase, the brochures can work as supplemental marketing materials to promote other similar products or services.

If you host the material on your website platform, making sure the file size of the digital brochure is as small as possible is also important. However, don’t sacrifice quality to get a very small file size. You can save bandwidth by having your brochure hosted and deployed by third party platforms or even through peer to peer networks when you have a very tight budget.

The graphics and visuals of your brochure

A full color brochure is the most effective, no matter what its intents and purposes are. However, for print ready materials you should make sure that you don’t overuse color. The downside is not only in cost, but sometimes in that fact that it can lead to printing artifacts and other inking issues that make readability a problem.

Always order a small test batch to make sure your brochure is highly readable.

A5 Portrait Brochure

A5 portrait brochures are one of the most common types of brochure and can be used for a wide range of marketing purposes. They are cost effective to print, cheaper to mail-out and suitable for all sizes of business from sole traders to larger corporate firms.

From thin mail-order catalogues, to corporate brochures with thick card covers, our A5 portrait brochures can be customised to suit your requirements with a wide range of printing and finishing options.

A flyer is also rightly known as a leaflet or a handbill. A flyer is one piece of paper, usually the standard size of 8 ½” x 11” (A4). Flyers are best for small scale marketing, or when you have a small region to cover. Flyers are a cheap way to get info out to a large number of people.

This type of marketing piece is called a throw-away, because they’re handed out or hung in public places with the expectation that some of them will only get a passing glance before being thrown away. They are poorly printed on low quality paper and might be used to promote a night club or pizza restaurant.

If you’re going to hang up your flyer, you’ll only print on one side. If you’re going to be handing out your flyer, you can print info on both sides.

The purpose of a flyer is to offer a small amount of information for a limited time at low manufacturing costs.

Flyers are most often used for: • Announcements of events, especially concerts or club openings.

• Product info, such as specs for a new car.

• Fact sheets handed out at trade shows or conferences.

Cipla Global Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical and Biotechnology company, headquarted in Mumbai, India. Cipla manufactures a range of pharmaceutical and personal care products. Since, Cipla being a pharmaceutical company, its brochure was supposed to look serious and mature. This was kept in mind while designing the brochure. Not much experimantation was instructed. Blue color was the basic color used. The brochure was represented as a sample for the company.

Brochures are also known as pamphlets and are more expensive to print. A brochure is generally a standard-size sheet of paper that has been folded lengthwise two times to create four panels (bi-fold) or folded three times to create six panels (tri-fold).

envelope and letterhead design Client-pepl Keywords - Visibility of the company’s logo, name, address and contact information. Clean layout. Best is to follow the starndard layout with standard sizes.

General standard size of a leterhead is A4. So the design is also kept A4 and size of the front panel of envelope is kept 9.5’ by 4.5’ as per given by the client.

Letterhead is printed on an A4 120 gsm paper and envelope with 70 gsm being very light weight.

When you send business mail, the envelope is the first point of contact with your customer and it sets the standard for its contents. Your envelope layout will determine how quickly we can deliver your mail.

Business Reply Mail (BRM) allows a mailer to distribute preprinted First-Class Mail reply pieces to customers. The mailer, not the customer, pays the return postage. The mailer does not prepay postage on BRM pieces. The Postal Service collects postage only on pieces that the customers actually send back to the mailer. This allows mailers to save postage costs on large volumes of distributed reply pieces when a response is not assured.This type of reply mail is frequently used by direct marketers seeking to encourage orders, researchers needing survey responses, or magazine publishers soliciting subscriptions.The extra inducement is provided by the fact that your customer does not pay the return postage, does not have to supply a postcard or envelope, and does not need to put an address on the mailpiece.

The layout cant be too flashy and it should have a good amount of white space for writing the receiver’s address or any other details. Landscape layout is generally preferred.

White, pale and buff coloured envelopes work best through our machines. If your envelope has designs printed on it we ask that you maintain two ‘clear zones’ free of colour, print, graphics or window material. A flyer is also rightly known as a leaflet or a handbill. A flyer is one piece of paper, usually the standard size of 8 ½” x 11” (A4). Flyers are best for small scale marketing, or when you have a small region to cover. Flyers are a cheap way to get info out to a large number of people.

Billboards are large advertising structures placed alongside busy roads to be noticed by drivers and passing pedestrians. It is sometimes called hoarding in other parts of the world. These billboards could attract pedestrians not only because they are large but also due to the variety of designs that it posses. It gives a designer so much room for customizing by using extensions and embellishments. No doubt, billboards are one of the best ways of reaching a large number of people in your area.

Designing a hoarding is a little different from designing a brochure or an advertisement. There are various reasons for this. First, a hoarding is read from far as compared to a brochure or an advertisement which is just a few inches away from your eyes. Second, you get more time to read a brochure or an advertisement but you may get a few seconds to read a hoarding. When you see a hoarding while driving, you may have the time to just glance at the hoarding. Third, hoardings are only support/reminder advertising mediums.

That is, you use this media to remind your target audience that you exist. While driving you do not expect the customer to stop on the road or the highway to read what is written on a hoarding. These three factors have to be taken into account while designing a hoarding.

Reflection on the internship In this chapter I reflect on the internship. Regarding my learning goals I shortly discuss my experiences; if I have achieved my goal, whether I experienced difficulties and what I think I have to improve.

More than I had expected I experienced communication difficulties. To convince the client is very important.

And it takes a lot of time and effort to convince the client and moreover make them understand the design.

A good design can also be rejected if presented in a wrong way. To contribute more to projects and to progress faster, I want to learn to make a more confident impression and to express my ideas and opinions more certain.

The internship was an opportunity to get immersed on a deeper level in indepth understanding of how an organization works. It also helped to look at things from a different perspective.

An interesting and open attitude of the people has helped. Also the fieldwork came easy to me and I felt a full member of the project teams

It is difficult to say what skills and knowledge gained in my study I could put in practice in my internship. What we learn in college and what the industry demands are a bit different things. Definitely the graphics knowledge did help a lot during the internship. But the long and tiring design process wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really successful in this industry.

Time is a big factor. Few steps have to completely erased out of the process due to time boundation. Other than that working with a team, following the design forecast, working in discipline, meeting deadlines were factors that really helped me during the internship which are very well followed in the college

Within the internship I did a lot of fieldwork. Because of this I have seen of what aspects you have to think while organizing a project (time taken for printing, delivery time).Furthermore I have learned how much time management is important. Designing has to be completed well in advance so that proper time is given for printing as well as delivery.

Before my internship in Morphy Creations, I had some doubts about my future career. Through this internship, I have seen what elements of my career I like and I got enthusiastic again to continue in graphics. I have found out that part of the research should contain fieldwork as I did in the internship

Although we learn and develop the necessary skills and knowledge while working in an organization, there are several things that I could improve already. I did not have totally clear what activities I could have done to reach my learning goals.

THE functioning and working conditions of an advertising company

At the beginning I did not have any experience of working within a company. Although I have worked for 2 weeks but working for 2 months was very different. When I was working for 2 weeks , there wasnt any sense of responsibility but here it was mich more.Involvement with the company was much more as well as projects. I saw the importance of financial support and personal capacity. During my stay I also experienced the dependence. There was often uncertainty whether and when projects could start. In the first instance the dependence and uncertainty was annoying, but it forced me to be flexible and to see what other things I could do and also it helped me making and doing any type of project at any point of time. This was a great learning experience for me.

Therefore during my stay I had some difficulties to determine tasks that I could carry out. In advance of my internship I talked with the organization about the project in which I could participate, however clear agreements on my activities were not made. A more assertive attitude from my side could have helped. To prevent uncertainties in future projects I will pay more attention to making clear agreements and back-up plans.

Other aspects to which I want to pay attention in general are: defining a clear research question and determine what data collection and analysis is suitable. I often have the tendency to concentrate more on data collection activities. Also in the internship I have seen that it is important to have your research clear, because it guides you in the process.

The participation in the interactive session made me enthusiastic. In this workshop all members of the company were really committed. It was interesting to hear the ideas and discussions between the different members.

These kinds of meetings are of importance, because they contribute to a better understanding among the different people. It permits that information can be passed and topics can be discussed in more depth. It is also a way to make each other enthusiastic and it stimulates to put things into action. Through the workshop I learned about conservation and management, but I want to learn more about it.

conclusion Within my study Accessory Designing I am interested in graphic designing and paper engineering and paper craft. It was a great opportunity for me to do a two month internship in Mumbai within the company Morphy Creations. The internship was concentrated on the advertising works. At the beginning of the internship I had set several learning goals regarding the improvement of my knowledge and skills. During my stay several activities have contributed to achieve a number of goals. I went two times to the field to examine the printing and its quality control process. The objective of these projects is to understand the importance of judging the right material to be used for a fixed budget. Next, I participated in an interactive session of the company, in which everyone was giving their views on the development of an action plan for the rising of their company beyond Mumbai and spreading more. The objective was to elaborate and coordinate a strategy with several national clients. For several strategy lines objectives and activities were formulated.

In conclusion, the internship was a useful experience. I have find out what my strengths and weaknesses are; I gained new knowledge and skills and met many new people. I achieved many of my learning goals, however for some the conditions did not permit to achieve them as I wanted. I got insight into the work of an advertising company. The financing of projects is an important factor and forces to be flexible in attitude and approach. I learned more about the industry and various hardships of it. Working together with the different clients was a good experience. To succeed in designing, the sharing of knowledge, ideas and opinions is of importance. There is still a lot to discover and research methods can be improved. At last this internship has given me new insights and motivation to pursue a career in graphics. To prepare myself for my future career I can improve several things. I can work on my communication skills so that I am able to present and express myself more confidently. I could perform certain tasks in research better if I have more experience in the research methodologies applied in cetacean cases.
