OUR ITALIAN HERITAGE

The Massaro Family in America BY JOSEPH MASSARO, EPSILON ’52

Circa 1904, a 12-year-old boy was working a 16-to-18-hour workday chipping away pieces of sulfur from the walls in a sulfur mine, three miles from his home town of Campobello d’Licata, Provincia Agrigento in central Sicily. He began working at sunrise, immediately after he had arrived at the sulfur mine from his home, which was a three mile walk from Campobello. His daily lunch consisted of a crust of homemade bread and a crescent of hard parmesan cheese. This 12-year-old boy is my father Giuseppe Natale Massaro. (Forty years later, I would be named after him, Joseph, as his fifth son.) Fortunately, my father came to realize early in life that there really wasn’t much of a rewarding future in working a lifetime in a Sicilian sulfur mine for just a few lira a week. At the same time, rumors were filtering back to the old world about the “land of opportunity” in the United States. My father decided to take the major step of leaving his parents and family home and emigrate to the United States to start a new life. With few or no finances and no command of the English language, he made his way to Palermo, Sicily’s port city and booked passage on an ocean liner going to the Promised Land. He was processed through Ellis Island in 1910 and made his way to Buffalo, where his father’s brothWedding photo of Joseph N. Massaro and Rose Cascio er, Thomas, had settled a few years Massaro, parents of Joseph James Massaro dated before. February 12, 1916 . My father soon gained employment at Wickwire Spencer making metal fences. On a trip to Brockton, Pa., he met my mother, Rosina Cascio, who had been born in Palermo, Sicily, seven years after my father and had come to America with her father and mother. They married, thus the Massaro family had its commencement. Children soon followed, including daughter Jeannette, then sons, James, Frank, John, Angelo, and me, Joseph Jr. My dad always wanted to own his own business and to that end, he established a grocery store on Franklin Street in what is now downtown Buffalo. Interesting fact: all five sons lived to celebrate their respective golden wedding anniversaries with their respective wives before age and illness began to diminish the family. Presently, my wife Nancy and I have been married 58 years. We have four daughters and a Jesuit priest son who is a theologian in the Catholic Church. We have much to be thankful for, especially to my father, Joseph Natale Massaro, who had the courage to come to the new world and begin a new life for himself, his children and future grandchildren. Note: In 1960, while serving in the U.S. Navy aboard a troop carrier ship in the Mediterranean, I had the opportunity to visit my father’s home town of Campobello and found very primitive conditions still existed, unpaved streets, chickens and goats wandering aimlessly and flies everywhere. Thank you Dad for a better life. Your son. n

Alpha Phi Delta is under attack… Will you help defend us? Alpha Phi Delta has sued Baruch College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), for violating the civil rights of our brothers of Gamma Rho Chapter. Here’s why: In 2014, administrators at Baruch imposed a moratorium on Greek-letter social organizations, forbidding them to recruit new members. Alpha Phi Delta’s chapter decided to no longer seek recognition as a “Greek club.” Despite this clear separation, CUNY responded by punishing Alpha Phi Delta, through suspensions, frozen records and harassment. On Friday, November 17, 2017 the brothers of Theta Beta at NYU inducted their Mu class. This is the12th class to cross since the chapter was reactivated in the spring of 2012. Since that time, 59 young men have taken the oath of brotherhood. The class included a legacy brother, as Brother Allen Acosta got to witness his brother Kelvin inducted. The chapter has more than 20 active brothers on campus and is looking for even bigger and better things in the spring semester. NYC North District Governor Angelo Flagiello presided over the ceremony. After the ceremony the chapter gathered for this photo with the three newly inducted brothers sitting in the front row and the undergrads and alumni behind them. The paddles that they made for their big brothers are on the table in front of them. Front row (l to r): Newly inducted brothers Omar Dauajare, Kelvin Acosta, Justin Chae. It’s easy and it’s quick— go to www.apd.org/Contact-Us and update your address and email so you can continue to receive The Kleos in all its forms! While APD tries hard and does better than many organizations, addresses change and emails change; and we are not always notified. If you have moved since you left college, whether that is last year or 40 years ago, or if you changed job or ISPs and your email has changed, APD needs to be updated! Please help us keep our records current, and keep you informed. Let us know where your chapter brothers are too! If their address is wrong or old, they are not getting The Kleos! For a list of some brothers we know we are missing information, check out www.apd.org/Lost-Brothers (data as of about six months ago).

BETA PHI REACTIVATION

Alumni and newly inducted undergraduates of Beta Phi.

Beta Phi is Back at Rowan University BY CHRIS MANCUSI, PNP, BETA PHI PROJECT MANAGER

L

ast year, an interest group was formed to reactivate our dormant Beta Phi Chapter at Rowan University, formerly Glassboro State College, in Glassboro, New Jersey. Sal Flagiello, VP for Expansion, had coordinated their efforts with the goal to have an organized group for a fall 2017 pledge period. In April 2017, Todd Cusato, National Vice-President and myself visited the interest group along with some Beta Phi alumni and local brothers. Twelve prospective members attended the meeting and things were optimistic for a strong class the following semester. However, for a wide array of reasons the group started to fizzle out as many key guys either were academically ineligible or changed their mind leaving only two men out of the original 12 still interested in going forward. This fall, VP for Expansion Flagiello insisted that the group pledge and relied heavily on the help of other brothers to recruit on the ground. He in essence served as a rush chairman for the group. With the help of Gamma Mu at Richard Stockton College and even Epsilon Gamma at St. Joseph’s College in Long Island (who traveled five-plus hours) the group was able to grow to eight men, in which case a baptism was performed. United as the Beta Tau pledge class, the pledges worked hard during a pledge period that saw them interact with many brothers, alumni and national officers. The pledges even drove two- plus hours to visit the North Jersey Alumni Club’s Founder’s Day Dinner in Linden, New Jersey. The event served as a game changer in terms of their dedication toward accomplishing their ultimate goal in becoming brothers.

The pledges later reflected, “We felt we belonged there, and we were welcomed with open arms.” Many undergraduate chapters were supportive of the reactivation. Epsilon Gamma and Epsilon Epsilon at Farmingdale State College drove between 4-5 hours from the Long Island district to show how Alpha Phi Delta truly is a family! Epsilon Delta at Montclair State University and members of the Delaware Valley Alumni Club as well as the chapter attended pledge meetings with the colony as well. The pledges even performed some valuable community service for an elderly family in town. They lent one of their trucks to the Reitter family and helped them move materials into their new home. The family sent a letter of appreciation to the Dean of Student Life saying, “Some residents think students are only interested in partying but we know better thanks to the good example and community involvement of your members.” The induction ceremony had a great turn-out of brothers including close to 20 Beta Phi & DVAC alumni and numerous Gamma Mu undergraduates. The ceremony was conducted by Todd Cusato, National Vice-President; Paul Zammit, National Secretary and Sal Flagiello, VP for Expansion. In addition, Vince Verdile, Florida District Governor and a proud Beta Phi alumnus flew from the Florida for the induction! Another alumnus even flew in from Tennessee. It was an emotional ceremony that resulted in seven new brothers taking the oath of brotherhood. Nicholas Amorbella, Matthew Berg, Michael Bergstrom, Tyler Davis, Davon Dickson, Brody Martinez and Joseph Musumeci became brothers of the Beta Tau pledge class that reactivated Beta Phi!

After the induction, more than 40 alumni and undergraduates broke bread at a nearby Italian restaurant and the seven newly inducted brothers were presented their fraternity pins by National Secretary Paul Zammit. The brothers were even surprised to receive a special visit from Beta Phi founder Carmen S. Trifiletti, who noted, “Just walking through the door brought back so many memories of what the fraternity meant to so many of us.” He added, “Seeing the new class wear purple and white T-shirts, displaying their excitement brought back all good memories.” The colony is fortunate to have a strong alumni base, led by Howard Beder and Jamie Burnett and a fantastic fraternity advisor, Cristin Elizabeth Farney. At the close of the fall semester, our Beta Phi Colony has the highest GPA of any IFC fraternity on campus. The sky is the limit for these young men! To follow up a successful fall semester, the colony inducted their spring class on March 25, 2018. Lazarus Almeida, Matthew Knox, Matthew Maine and Joseph Sansone were inducted as the Beta Upsilon pledge class. The brothers end the year with 11 undergraduates. n

2018 NATIONAL COUNCIL

Vaughn College in East Elmhurst (Queens), N.Y. (www.vaughn.edu) was chartered as Epsilon Xi Chapter. Alpha Phi Delta is the first fraternity on the campus of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. With the support of New York entities, especially Beta Sigma Chapter, 38 brothers have been inducted since the fall of 2016. They aim to be a powerhouse in the busy New York City-North District. The current chapter president is Alex Morales.

Brothers Logan McHale and Bill Butterfield co-founded the colony four semesters ago. The chapter currently has 10 brothers and six pledges for this semester and already have numerous interested prospects lined up for the fall 2018 semester pledge class, so they will be more than adequately manned for a bright future. In the past, the brothers have been involved with Thon, which is a major fundraiser for pediatric cancer and host “Pie an Alpha Phi,” which is a fundraiser for families effected by ALS. Since Penn State Altoona is a feeder school for Penn State (State College) the two entities are perfectly matched as the brothers who are inducted will eventually become brothers of Chi Chapter at Penn State as they advance to the upperclassmen ranks. In fact the current president of Chi Chapter is brother Rudy Fuzyalov who transferred from Epsilon Nu. Ryan Crosby is the current Epsilon Nu Chapter president.

ALPHA PHI DELTA FOUNDATION

Foundation/Meet our Directors BY JOE CALDARELLA, BETA SIGMA ’73

We should all be proud to have a roster of successful and accomplished Directors overseeing the important work of our Foundation. This is the second in a series of profiles to let you all get to know two of them better. You’ll notice two common traits—both are members of the Omega Society and both re-engaged with the Fraternity later in life, once again proving that our bonds are truly eternal.

Mickey and his wife Carole

Mickey D’Addato, Beta Beta ’56 Mickey, together with his younger brother, Vincent was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, surrounded by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and maternal grand-parents. All 16 tenants in his four-story building were Italian; it was like living in Italy. Being a Yankee fan was a requirement, especially with his uncle as director of ticket sales at Yankee Stadium. Mickey got to meet Rizzuto, Berra and the rest of the Yankees of that era. And of course he idolized his namesake Mickey Mantle. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle, N.Y. in 1955, and decided to attend Manhattan College, staying close to home in the Bronx. He was invited to pledge Beta Beta in 1956 and remains close to this day with many of his pledge and chapter brothers especially John Antenucci, Don Batista and Dick Barbieri. As an undergrad, Mickey was a delegate to the National Convention and also served as his chapter’s corresponding secretary. After graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in math and physics Mickey joined Kearfott Guidance and Navigation, which was the aerospace/defense arm of The Singer Company, servicing all branches of the military. He spent 35 years with Kearfott starting as a junior project engineer and retiring in 1994 as the Vice President of Quality Assurance. During his employment he held positions of increasing levels of responsibility in Design, Development, Manufacture and Quality Assurance. Mickey received many awards from the various branches of the military for the work he performed

on their behalf. And in 1970 he was awarded an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickenson University. Mickey, was also a partner in three successful businesses in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall from 1977–1994. In 1994, he formed Wynwood Associates, LLC, a property acquisition and management entity. He retired in 2015. Mickey has had a very successful career and strongly believes in paying it forward as evidenced by his charitable work with UNICO, Manhattan College, his church, as well as the Alpha Phi Delta Foundation. UNICO is the largest Italian American charitable association in the country. Throughout the years, he has served on various chapter and foundation committees and offices, including chapter president. In 2013, he was recognized as Person of the Year and presently serves as a director on the chapter board. He also serves on the Educational Grants Committee, which he chaired for the past five years. Mickey remains dedicated to his alma mater through his involvement with the Manhattan College Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Center and the Covenant Society. In fact it was Mickey’s involvement with the Covenant Society, which recognizes the college in wills/estates, that led him to advocate for the Fraternity to start our own Omega Society. And of course, Mickey is an Omega Society member. While Mickey has always been close socially with his Beta Beta brothers, it was only about five years ago that he re-engaged in a very substantial way with the national Fraternity, first as part of the planning for the Centennial Gala and then as a Foundation Director. As a Director, Mickey is passionate about gaining significant recognition for our fraternity through the good work we perform. Mickey and Carole have been married for 35 years and they currently reside in Parsippany, N.J. Mickey enjoys fine dining, fine wines (he has a 1,000 bottle collection), a great cigar and international travel. But most of all Mickey enjoys his family—he has two children, Bill and Jeanine, and four grandchildren—Daniel, twins Allison and Pamela, and Lindsay. His advice to them: “honor your commitments.”

Larry Kaufman, Beta Xi ’88 Larry is one of the newest members of the Board, elected in 2017. As a Board member Larry is focused on fully funding the Publication and Leadership endowments. He also is advocating for placing more weight on leadership and volunteer service in our scholarship criteria. Larry is a Jersey guy, born in Newark in 1969 and raised in Bloomfield. It was at Bloomfield High School where he met his future wife Laura. Larry and Laura were married in 1993 and have two sons – Harrison is a founding brother of Epsilon Lambda at the University of New Haven and currently serves as our VP of Undergraduate Affairs. Justin is currently attending the University of Delaware.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE 2018 Deadline May 31 The new Scholarship application is available now at www.apd.org. Just click on the button in the middle of the first page that says “Click for 2018 APD Scholarship Application.” The new process requires all applications to be submitted on line. Letters of recommendation are no longer required. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2018.

Larry went to the New Jersey Institute of Technology to study Industrial Engineering and pledged Beta Xi in 1988. He remembers the chapter for being a diverse, tight knit group that supported each other all the time. Larry served as the IFC representative and as president of the Student Activities Council as an undergrad. Larry began his career in 1991 as a process control engineer for a material handling and consulting company. After a successful nineyear run, he took a risk and transitioned into an IT programming position with Nabisco. He later ran IT delivery for the NY region for ThruPoint, a startup consulting firm, and also spent three years working for Sanofi Pharmaceuticals. Larry’s career took another upturn in 2005 when he moved into IT sales at Cisco where he currently leads a sales organization within the Global Enterprise Segment. Larry is responsible for creating, positioning, and negotiating IT solutions for Fortune 100 clients including Healthcare Corporation of America (HCA), Capital One, Blackrock and Pfizer. He was also an integral core team member in the U.S. Army Enterprise Service Agreement removing many internal and contractual roadblocks to provide a unique solution to meet the $1.5B U.S. Army install base requirements. Larry has been involved in many internal sales optimization programs and is often looked to for guidance in service sales selling methods. He has informally and formally mentored numerous employees at various stages of their development within Cisco. He is also very involved in Cisco’s diversity programs, which focus on transitioning minority pre-college students to college, and minority college students to the workforce. Larry maintained close contact with his chapter brothers after graduation, but did not participate in any APD activities as he focused on his career. He re-engaged with the APD through a chance meeting with a mutual friend of Beta Xi brother and PNP Al Fafara. That meeting led to Larry joining the North Jersey Alumni Club and serving as their Treasurer. He also was recently appointed as the Secretary of the Brooklyn Alumni Club. In 2016, Larry attended his first APD convention and was intrigued with the Omega society. He did his due diligence at the convention and became an Omega Society member shortly thereafter. In addition to devoting so much of his time to the Fraternity, Larry is also an avid Texas Holdem Tournament Poker player, with dreams of one day making it to the World Series of Poker’s Main Event! n

A tradition was reborn in Pittsburgh. Brother Leon Panella, Psi ’62, held a soppressata making party for about 10 years at his home outside the Pittsburgh area. However Leon passed away in 2015, and the parties stopped until PNP Doug Sundo, Psi ’75, stepped in and bought Leon’s sausage making equipment from Leon’s wife Karen. With the help of Raymo Santilli, Psi ’85, the soppressata making was held again at the Treesdale Community Center outside of Pittsburgh on January 6. About 300 pounds were made by many of the brothers from the Pittsburgh Alumni Club, family and friends shown pictured. Doug and Raymo say the tradition will continue, and the soppressata will cure in 6–8 weeks. Early samplings are delicious. IN MEMORIAM Scholarship recipient remembers her grandfather A very touching response to the ‘Where Are They Now’ series on past scholarship winners. To the Brotherhood of Alpha Phi Delta, I regret to inform the brotherhood of Alpha Phi Delta that my grandfather, Norman P. Castello, Zeta ’49, passed away on July 31 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, N.Y. Alpha Phi Delta was a great source of pride for my grandfather. He cherished reading every Kleos magazine cover-to-cover and would always forward me (as a former scholarship winner) his copy so I could look through it. I am forever grateful for the financial support Alpha Phi Delta offered me throughout college and graduate school by awarding me scholarships for multiple years. My grandfather was extremely proud of this and had been insisting I reach out to the brotherhood and give an update on where I’m at now in my life—as he said they had been featuring previous scholarship winners. I know it’s too late for him to read these words in print form, but in honor of his request, I’d like to assure the Scholarship Committee that their scholarship monies were well spent. I graduated summa cum laude with a final GPA of 3.89 from Oswego State University in 2006 with dual majors in Music and Psychology. APD scholarships helped fund my collegiate expenses while I worked for three years as a Resident Assistant on campus. I pledged a co-ed music fraternity during my undergraduate years (Mu Beta Psi) and was able to experience first-hand, the amazing and supportive family that is offered through involvement in a Greek organization. I stayed at Oswego State and pursued my graduate studies while working full time as a Domestic Violence/Rape Crisis Counselor for a women’s shelter. I graduated summa cum laude with a final GPA of 3.98 in 2009 with a Master’s Degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Counseling. I’m currently employed full time as a School Counselor at Indian River Middle School in Philadelphia, N.Y. where I work primarily with military students who reside on and around Fort Drum (Army base). My grandfather and I shared a mutual love and appreciation for music and performance, specifically singing. Music continues to be a major part of my life. I perform regularly in musicals and plays through Northern New York with Watertown Lyric Theatre, Little Theater, and The Butler Did it Players Murder Mystery Theatre Troupe. In addition to this, I’ve been performing for more than five years with Northern Blend Chorus, an internationally acclaimed women’s barbershop chorus. For the past year and a half, I have also sung lead in a barbershop quartet called Lip Service, and competed in the women’s international barbershop competition in Halifax, Nova Scotia. My grandfather not only fostered my love for music, but supported my pursuit to learn the craft by funding private vocal lessons and driving me toand-from each lesson throughout all of high school. In 2015, I married my partner of eight years, Patrick Maniccia, on board the Carnival Splendor Cruise Ship in Manhattan, NY and then sailed with 40 of my closest friends and family up the east coast. We currently reside in Watertown, NY with our two dogs Tank and Duke. I slept by my grandfather’s side in the hospital in the days leading up to his passing and held his hand as he closed his eyes for the final time. His last wish was that I perform the Ave Maria at his funeral, which I proudly did (with tears in my eyes). My grandfather was an AMAZING man and he will be forever missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. My grandfather’s Alpha Phi Delta paddle now hangs proudly in my living room. All my best, Jodi Castello (4-time scholarship winner 2003–2005, 2008)

Norman P. Castello, Zeta ’49 (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 31, 2017 in Utica, NY. He graduated from RPI with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. Norman worked as an Engineer at the General Electric Company/Aerospace Engineering Division (AED) from February 1953 to June 1990. Every Christmas he spread the holiday spirit by playing the role of Santa Claus for family and friends. He was a nature and wildlife enthusiast, an avid Norm with his granddaughter, Jodi hunter and fisherman, and he and his wife Liz enjoyed bird watching and astronomy. He participated in bowling and softball and was a fantastic pitcher playing into his late 60s. Rocco Mediate, Beta Omicron ’54, (Youngstown State) passed away February 28 in Youngstown, Ohio at the age of 83. He was a lifelong member of the Youngstown Alumni Club. Rocco graduated from Bessemer High School in 1952, and earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Youngstown College. He retired from YSU where he was Director of Facilities Maintenance and also taught courses in the mechanical engineering technology department. Paul Alafogiannis, Beta Pi ’89 (St. John’s) died March 1, 2018. at age 47 after a battle with stomach cancer. Paul graduated SJU in 1995 with a bachelors degree in Sociology. At the time of his death, he was living in Astoria, Queens, NY and working as a plumber for a familyowned business. After his graduation, Paul continued to support and mentor his chapter and became the link from the late 1980s brothers to the recent undergraduates. Beta Pi alumni have started the process to have a bench on the SJU-Queens campus named in his honor. He will be sorely missed. n
