From Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie – here is a spectacular thank you to their fans all over the world On Thursday 12 July 1962 the Rolling Stones went on stage at the Marquee Club in London’s Oxford Street. In the intervening fifty years the Stones have performed live in front of more people than any band... ever. They’ve played the smallest blues clubs and some of the biggest stadium tours of all time. They’ve had No.1 singles and albums in every country that has a popular music chart and have helped define global popular culture. A phenomenal half-century later, they now look back at their astounding career. Curated, introduced and narrated by the band themselves, The Rolling Stones 50 is the only officially authorized book to celebrate this milestone. With privileged access to a wealth of unseen and rare material, it is packed with superb reportage photography, contact sheets, negative strips, outtakes and so much more, from every period in the band’s history. With more than 1,000 illustrations, it also features some of the most rare and interesting Stones memorabilia in existence: international posters, draft record cover art, bubblegum cards, jigsaws and other previously unpublished treasures specially photographed for this volume. Additional contributions by photography legends Gered Mankowitz, Jean-Marie Périer, Dezo Hoffmann, Michael Cooper, Terry O’Neill, Bent Rej, Philip Townsend and many others make this the definitive book to celebrate fifty years of the Rolling Stones.

The Book of Kells Bernard Meehan Bernard Meehan is Head of Research Collections and Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College Library, Dublin, owners of the Book of Kells. His curatorial responsibilities include the college’s corpus of medieval manuscripts, collections of Irish historical and literary papers, and the early printed books housed in the iconic threehundred-year-old Long Room of the Old Library.

250 reproductions, 230 in colour 32.0 x 24.7cm 256pp slipcased ISBN 978 0 500 238943 October

£60.00

Brimming with fresh interpretations and insights, a dazzling new volume on Ireland’s revered national treasure and the world’s most beautiful illuminated manuscript The Book of Kells is one of the great treasures of medieval Europe. Produced around 800 AD, it presents a text of the Gospels employing decoration that is not only extraordinarily rich and colourful but also, in places, deeply enigmatic. In this striking new presentation we are guided through full-page depictions of Christ, the Evangelists and their symbols, lavish openings to the Gospels, inventive lettering, and combinations of complex interlace, energetic animals and human figures. Bernard Meehan has studied the Book of Kells for more than thirty years. He elucidates the imagery, with descriptions of how animals, including lion, peacock and snake, functioned symbolically, and explores the relationship between text and decoration, the scribes and artists, and technical aspects including the production of the manuscript, which remains mysterious. The exceptional illustrations feature more than eighty actual-size reproductions of full pages, plus an even greater number of enlarged details that allow the reader’s eye to dwell on the intricacy of decoration which is barely visible in the manuscript itself. This new book will enrich people interested in manuscripts, in design, in Celtic art, in religious imagery, and in the world of Irish studies. It will be a revelation even to those familiar with the great Book of Kells.

A magnificently illustrated book, packed with new scholarship, devoted to Albrecht Dürer’s early art and the social context for its development Literature about Dürer fills library shelves. Does this mean everything has already been said about the artist? Far from it, according to the scholars at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and their international partners in the Early Dürer Project. This book deals with the core phenomena of Dürer’s early work, ranging from the artist’s biography and surroundings to the question of Dürer’s role as the archetype of the modern artist. New sociological approaches allow us to interpret Dürer’s ‘ideal neighbourhood’ as a source of inspiration for the artist’s work, resituating Dürer in the artistic context of his time, at an exciting crossroad between the imitation of traditional painting and the self-conscious renewal of his profession. Photographs of Dürer’s early work – many of which are new and published here for the first time – complete the publication, which accompanies the major exhibition at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, and is set to establish a new basis for a modern understanding of Germany’s most famous artist.

‘They protest against the immorality of my work, they criticize me for loving women … But they are incapable of understanding what I do’ Auguste Rodin

Rodin & Eros Pascal Bonafoux Pascal Bonafoux is a French writer and art historian, whose books include Van Gogh: The Passionate Eye and Rembrandt: Substance and Shadow.

156 illustrations, 140 in colour 20.0 x 17.0cm 272pp ISBN 978 0 500 239001 November

Surveys Rodin’s erotic depictions of women in drawings, sculptures, plasters, bronzes and marble The theme of the erotic is ever present in the work of Auguste Rodin, both in his sculptures and in his many drawings. Throughout his career, he depicted sexual desire in all its facets, in every mood from delicate innocence to frank intensity, bearing witness to an endless fascination with the flesh and a love of the female form. Taking a chronological path through Rodin’s career, this is an intimate approach to the many faces of sex and sensuality in his body of work and in the society within which his art was forged. The text discusses his relationships with women, his friendships with poets and artists, and the controversy that his sculptures caused in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when French society was marked by a hypocritical disparity between public morals and private desires. This witty and perceptive book, packed with beautiful images, will shed new light on this intriguing aspect of the artist’s world and his skill at capturing the fleeting nature of pleasure in timeless art.

Rich collisions and fresh perspectives illuminate the profound continuities of thought and practice that have marked Western art This groundbreaking study explores the deep connections between modern and premodern art, offering a radical reading that reveals the underlying patterns and ideas traversing centuries of artistic practice. Nagel reconsiders from an innovative double perspective some key issues in the history of art, from iconoclasm and illusionism to the status of painting, installation and the museum as institution. He examines, among other topics, why the medieval workshop was of such importance to the Bauhaus; how the 4th-century Jerusalem Chapel in Rome was a proto-earthwork akin to the projects of Robert Smithson; and the relationship between medieval relics and Duchamp’s readymades. Alongside an analysis of such 20th-century medievalist theorists as Brecht, Joyce and Eco, Nagel considers a wide range of celebrated artists. The effect of these encounters goes in two directions at once: one age offers new insights into the other, and vice versa, deepening our understanding of both past and present. Art 9

A vibrant and sumptuously illustrated guide that will captivate anyone keen to explore the cultural achievements of this great civilization Persian art and architecture have a rich heritage that stretches far beyond the borders of modern-day Iran, from the Abbasid monuments of Baghdad to the splendid Timurid buildings of Samarqand and Bukhara. When the ancient land of Persia was conquered by the Arabs, its people embraced the coming of Islam but strove also to retain their own language and culture, celebrating their history in works of literature such as the epic Shahnama. This merging of influences spread through the Middle East, and is reflected in monumental architecture and in art forms that range from expressive miniature paintings to sumptuous carpets and ceramics. This book follows a historical path across the Iranian world and examines the artistic legacies of great rulers and their dynasties, from the rebirth of Persian art under the Seljuqs, to the magnificent structures built by Timur-i Lang in Samarqand, to the cultural flowering that occurred under the Safavid dynasty through the patronage of Shah Abbas and his descendants, and beyond.

Midnight to the Boom Painting in India After Independence Edited by Susan S. Bean Surveys the revolutionary art movement that grew in India between its declaration of independence at midnight on 15 August 1947 and the economic boom of the 1990s Following independence in 1947, India’s artists faced a particular challenge: how to express the new nation’s distinctive character while entering a global discourse focused on modernism’s universal premises of experimentation and shared human values. In the absence of a dominant aesthetic, painters could turn where they wished and blend as they liked – from Abstract Expressionism to Tantric spiritualism; from Rajasthani painting to changes in India’s complex politics, religions, castes and daily life. This richly illustrated, in-depth study, published to accompany the exhibition organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in the USA, surveys the three generations of artists responsible for these critical shifts in the development of India’s modernist art. It shows how their achievements and the country’s unprecedented boom ushered India’s modern and contemporary art into a new era of globalism, a soaring international market, and an explosion in the media and technologies of art.

Susan S. Bean is Curator of South Asian and Korean Art at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.

£60.00

A collectable facsimile of a little-known Cornell masterpiece, presented in a box and with a volume of essays and a DVD One of Joseph Cornell’s favourite pastimes was to meander through the used book stalls of lower Manhattan, rummaging around in search of items to spark his creative impulses. Some time in the early 1930s he came upon the Journal d’Agriculture Pratique (1911), a voluminous handbook of advice for farmers. Over time Cornell altered and reinvented many of the pages in the Journal. He inserted collages, photomontages and drawings; he crossed out words in the text and made French puns with others. Hand-coloured engravings, cutouts and lift-ups transport the reader from page to page. Owing to its fragility, the dazzling elegance of Cornell’s Journal has rarely been viewed. Now, in a unique venture, 66 of its extraordinary pages have been re-created in virtual facsimile, with cutouts, glue-ons and other handmade details. Included in a specially designed box are a DVD of the entire work, including pop-up commentaries, and a volume of illustrated essays on the Journal and Cornell’s own artistic practice. Art 13

Exciting new discoveries and ongoing research help clarify the links between the Olmecs and the Maya, while newly revealed paintings at Calakmul show Maya artists to have been both masters of convention and ready innovators. Vital new finds at the heart of the Aztec capital are still astounding students of Mexico, even as the meaning of works from the Early Colonial period continue to reveal the complexity of the first decades under Spanish rule. With many new illustrations and analysis of recent discoveries, The Art of Mesoamerica remains an ideal companion for the art historian, student and traveller.

Whitney Chadwick One of the best-selling World of Art titles of all time: the definitive single volume on the history of women’s art Whitney Chadwick’s acclaimed study challenges the assumption that great women artists are exceptions to the rule who have ‘transcended’ their sex to produce major works of art. While acknowledging those women whose contributions to visual culture since the Middle Ages have often been neglected, Chadwick’s survey amounts to much more than an alternative canon of women artists: it re-examines the works themselves and the ways in which they have been perceived as marginal, often in direct reference to gender. In her discussion of feminism and its influence on such a reappraisal, the author also addresses the closely related issues of ethnicity, class and sexuality. This new edition features a completely new chapter that charts the evolution of feminist art history since the 1970s, revealing how artists have developed and subverted the strategies of feminism. It is brought up to date with discussion of some of the most significant international women artists to have emerged in recent years, including Wangechi Mutu, Pae White, Yael Bartana, Jenny Saville and Teresa Margolles. The Naked Nude Frances Borzello Frances Borzello is an art historian and the author of several books, including A World of Our Own: Women as Artists, Seeing Ourselves: Women’s Self-Portraits and At Home: The Domestic Interior in Art, all published by Thames & Hudson.

130 illustrations, 116 in colour 28.0 x 21.4cm 192pp ISBN 978 0 500 238929 October

£28.00

The story of the contemporary nude in art told by an art historian with a rare gift for sharing her passions and ideas The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless – its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this fluent and engaging new study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected artistic nude of Kenneth Clark’s classic, The Nude (1956), with today’s depictions: raw, uncomfortable, disturbing and intriguing. Complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations, Borzello’s text takes a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture, and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone. Grittier and more subtle, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time.

Celebrates the centennial of modernism’s most important innovation: abstraction Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Inventing Abstraction 1910–1925 explores the development of abstraction from the moment of its declaration around 1912 by pioneering figures such as Vasily Kandinsky, František Kupka and the Delaunays, through its establishment as the foundation of avant-garde practice in the mid-1920s. This book brings together many of the most influential works in abstraction’s early history to draw a cross-media portrait of this watershed moment in which traditional art was reinvented in a wholesale way. Works are presented in groups that serve as case studies, each engaging a key topic in abstraction’s first years: an artist, a movement, an exhibition or thematic concern. Key focal points include Vasily Kandinsky’s ambitious Compositions V, VI and VII; a selection of Piet Mondrian’s work that offers a distilled narrative of his trajectory to Neo-plasticism; and all the extant Suprematist pictures that Kazimir Malevich showed in the landmark ‘0.10’ exhibition in 1915.

The complete oil paintings of William Scott, a central figure in 20th-century art Over the course of nearly sixty years, William Scott painted more than 1,000 works in oil, all of them catalogued in this magnificent new fourvolume publication. Each work is accompanied by a catalogue note giving reasons for the dating together with any documentary material relevant to its history, much of it published here for the first time. An enormous amount of new information has been unearthed during the six years of research that has gone into this important project, research that not only reveals a great deal more than was previously known about the artist’s life and work but also about how both these aspects of his career had a bearing on the wider context of contemporary British art. The artist’s own papers and many previously unpublished letters and lecture notes have been made available by his family especially for this project. This landmark work will provide cultural and art historians, as well as dealers and the art trade, with a vital tool for further research. Art 21

Why Your Five Year Old Could Not Have Done That Modern Art Explained Susie Hodge Susie Hodge is author of more than 70 books for adults and children. A passionate and persuasive polemic against the most common disparaging remark levelled at contemporary art Modern art is not – and never has been – child’s play. A five-year-old might succeed in executing a spin painting such as those of Damien Hirst without understanding the ideas that lie behind it or its place in the history of artistic endeavour, but it does not follow that this work would be of significance to artists and historians. In this enjoyable and thought-provoking book, Susie Hodge examines 100 works of modern art that have attracted critical and public hostility – from Cy Twombly’s scribbled Olympia (1957), Jean-Michel Basquiat’s crude but spontaneous LNAPRK (1982), to the apparently careless mess of Tracey Emin’s My Bed (1998) – and shows how, far from being negligible novelties, they are inspired and logical extensions of the ideas of their time. She places each work in its cultural context to present an unforgettable vision of modern art in a book that will transform and inform your gallery visits for years to come.

An enlivening account for all those interested in the minds of artists – for those who wish to look afresh, with an artist’s eye Behind the closed door of the artist’s studio is a hidden world of images – those artworks from the past that have inspired, animated, troubled or consoled the artists of today. In My View reveals that hidden world, providing an intimate look at the imaginations of nearly 80 international artists, each of whom reflects on an artist who has inspired them or influenced their practice. In My View features an exciting range of artworks from the 15th to the mid-20th century, often supplemented by images of the selecting artist’s work. Some of the contributors provide unusual and individual reflections on familiar figures from art history, unearthing personal connections that they have with art from the past; others select lesser-known artists whose work has deeply moved them, revealing private passions that are surprisingly strong. Their stories show the profound connections that exist between artists, speaking of the challenges, provocations and revelations that can be found when one artist looks closely at the work of another.

Gerhard Richter Patterns Gerhard Richter Gerhard Richter is one of the foremost artists of his generation.

238 colour illustrations 14.3 x 21.2cm 488pp ISBN 978 0 500 093726 December

Divided, mirrored, repeated: a limitless sequence created by Gerhard Richter from an original oil painting ‘Nature/Structure. There is no more to say. In my pictures I reduce to that. But “reduce” is the wrong word, because these are not simplifications. I can’t verbalize what I am working on: to me, it is many-layered by definition; it is what is more important, what is more true’ Gerhard Richter This publication documents Gerhard Richter’s experiment of taking an image of an original abstract painting and dividing it vertically into two. Each divided part is divided again, mirrored and repeated, producing ever narrower strips, which results in patterns. A total of 238 selected patterns are presented here. Regarded as one of the most influential and pre-eminent artists of our time, Gerhard Richter has involved himself personally and directly with this publication. His work is reproduced here with superlative attention to detail, colour and print quality. The result is a work that will satisfy the most demanding and passionate of the artist’s discerning admirers.

A colourful survey of a vibrant country’s equally vibrant art scene Brazil is experiencing an exciting blossoming of culture across many areas. Contemporary Art Brazil focuses on 110 of the country’s most important practitioners in the realm of the fine arts, including artists, gallerists, heads of institutions, critical thinkers and collectors. Extensively illustrated and based on the most up-to-date research, it provides an invaluable survey of current trends and key players, placing them in the context of tropicalismo and neo-concretismo, the two movements that first brought the Brazilian art scene to international attention in the 1960s. Profiles of such internationally recognized figures as artists Cildo Meireles, Beatriz Milhazes, Ernesto Neto and Vik Muñiz, and collector Bernardo Paz, sit alongside those of lesser-known, but equally important, characters. Four scene-setting essays survey: the key trends in Brazilian art today; the work made by non-Brazilian artists who find their inspiration in Brazil; the history and critical importance of the São Paulo and Porto Alegre biennials; and the history of Brazil modernism. This volume will captivate anyone interested in South America’s dynamic contemporary culture.

Art in Oceania A New History Peter Brunt, Nicholas Thomas, Sean Mallon, Lissant Bolton, Deidre Brown, Damian Skinner and Susanne Küchler A landmark celebration of all aspects of Pacific art by seven of the world’s leading contemporary authorities The arts of Oceania are astonishing: great statues, daunting tattoos, dynamic carving, dazzling woven and painted fabrics, intricately carved weapons, a bewildering variety of ornaments, ritual objects, and original contemporary art rooted in the history of the region. This major book breaks new ground by setting the art of Oceania in its full historical context and capturing an up-to-date understanding of the field. From prehistoric finds to the impact of pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial historical processes, it explores influences such as migration, trade, missionaries, pacification, tourism, nationalism and market factors, offering abundant new interpretations and addressing significant gaps in other publications. Factors that have been hitherto largely neglected, including the role of museums, the significance of colonial photography, indigenous modernisms and contemporary Pacific art, are covered alongside the familiar canon. This beautifully illustrated volume will appeal to general readers interested in world art, collectors, university students, scholars and museum professionals in the field. Peter Brunt is Senior Lecturer in Art History at Victoria University of Wellington. Nicholas Thomas is Director of the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Beryl Bainbridge Artist, Writer, Friend Psiche Hughes Preface by Brendan King Psiche Hughes is a former lecturer in Latin American and comparative literature at the University of London.

108 illustrations in colour and black and white 22.9 x 15.2cm 208pp ISBN 978 0 500 516515 September

£19.95

The first book to tell the life story of this much-loved writer and larger-than-life character, and also the first to reveal her as a talented painter of quirky, imaginative and colourful works Beryl Bainbridge needs no introduction as one of the finest and best-loved novelists of our times. But until now, few people knew that painting and drawing were also lifelong passions, which she found relaxing and altogether less pressurized than writing. She painted landscapes, scenes from her novels, and above all people – friends, lovers, her children, and fictional and historical figures (she had a particular fascination for Napoleon). Undeterred by her lack of formal training, Beryl had an exuberance of technique to match her imagination. As one of her many friends observes, the paintings were like Beryl herself: ‘irreverent, funny and highly original.’ Psiche Hughes first met Beryl in summer 1963; their close friendship endured until Beryl’s death in 2010. Psiche provides here a vivid first-hand portrait of a woman who combined towering creative talent with a tremendous sense of fun and an incorrigible free spirit. Literary Art 35

A BIOGRAPHY

Henri Cartier-Bresson New in paperback Pierre Assouline is the author of critically acclaimed biographies of Georges Simenon, Hergé, Gaston Gallimard and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler.

£16.95

A Biography Pierre Assouline New in paperback, the definitive biography of the greatest photographer of modern times The 20th century was that of the image, and the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, born in 1908, was the eye of the century. His life story and the interpretation of his work reveal above all the history of a vision. As he traversed the century, his eclectic eye focused on the fascination of Africa in the 1920s, the tragic fate of the Spanish Republicans, the Liberation of Paris, the weariness of Gandhi a few hours before his assassination, and the victory of the Chinese communists. An intensely private individual, Cartier-Bresson nonetheless took Pierre Assouline into his confidence over a number of years, discussing such subjects as his youthful devotion to surrealism, his lifelong passion for drawing, his experience of war and the prison camps, his friends and the women in his life. He even opened up his invaluable archives. This sensitive biography is the result of the meeting of two minds, revealed in much the same way and with the same truth as one of Cartier-Bresson’s outstanding, inimitable photographs. Published to coincide with the William Klein/Daido Moriyama exhibition opening at Tate Modern in October 2012 Daido Moriyama first came to prominence in the mid-1960s with his gritty depictions of Japanese urban life. He draws inspiration from the trenchant social critiques produced by photographer Shomei Tomatsu, William Klein’s confrontational photographs of New York, Andy Warhol’s silkscreened multiples of newspaper images, and the writings of Jack Kerouac and Yukio Mishima. His highly innovative and intensely personal photographic approach often incorporates high contrast, graininess and tilted vantages to convey the fragmentary nature of modern realities. Bill Brandt’s magnificent photographs collected together in one superb volume Few photographers have spanned the genres from photojournalism to true artistic endeavour as completely as Bill Brandt. Yet Brandt’s journalism was never strictly reportage: all his work reflected a clear artistic purpose. His qualities as an artist, recognized by all his peers as outstanding, were never better expressed than in his series of nudes, photographed in the studio and on location over a period of thirty-five years. He published that work in two justly famous books: Perspective of Nudes (1961) and Bill Brandt Nudes (1980). Now the oeuvre has been brought together within a single volume in this beautifully presented book: Brandt Nudes: A New Perspective, previously published only as a limited edition. This book reflects Brandt’s original selection and organization of the images. Each of the sections is introduced with a succinct and revealing essay by Mark Haworth-Booth, the photographic historian best known for his work in curating the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

£38.00

Accompanies a display of the original exhibition opening at the Centre national de l’audiovisuel, Luxembourg, in Autumn 2012 ‘The Bitter Years’ was the title of a seminal exhibition held in 1962 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Edward Steichen. The show featured 208 images by photographers worked under the aegis of the US Farm Security Administration in 1935–41 as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. The project launched many photographic careers, most notably those of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, whose work featured alongside that of ten other photographers, including Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans and Arthur Rothstein. Their images are testimonies of a people in crisis, hit by the full force of economic turmoil and the effects of drought and dust storms. The Bitter Years celebrates some of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century and, since no proper catalogue was produced at the time, provides a whole new insight into Steichen’s impact on the evaluation of documentary photography. Illustrated, in-depth essays cover every genre, while the ideas and works of key photographers are assessed to reveal what motivated them, who influenced whom, and what each was striving to achieve. Detailed cultural and individual artist timelines clarify historical context. Supporting each essay are close analyses of key works. Illustrated focal points pinpoint aspects such as use of colour and visual metaphor, quirks of composition and technical innovations, enabling you to grasp each work’s full meaning. You will appreciate the tiny but telling details of social portraits; the stark, graphic qualities of urban landscapes; the erotic, or the chilling, undertones of nude studies; and the humour, anger or pathos of conceptual works. The first monograph from up-and-coming photographer Maciej Dakowicz, featuring powerfully gritty – and often hilarious – documentary photographs of nightlife in the Welsh capital Maciej Dakowicz spent five years photographing the nighttime revelries that take place in Cardiff every weekend. Focused around a few pedestrianized streets in the city centre, Dakowicz’s images capture nightlife fuelled by alcohol and emotions. The arc of an evening’s entertainment is brilliantly captured in these candid photographs, which reveal fun, hilarity and bawdiness as well as fighting and drunken exhaustion. There are stag nights and hen parties, men dressed as superheroes and women dressed as Playboy bunnies, mountains of discarded chip wrappers, arrests by the police – and lots and lots of posing for the camera. Dakowicz’s images, at times shocking or upsetting, at others affectionate and wry, form an important documentary photobook of British urban life in the early part of the 21st century.

Wildly original, highly accomplished: a beautifully illustrated, designed and produced collection of the latest photography by Tim Walker When one of the most visually exciting photographers of our times turns fashion stories into fairy tales, the results are unmistakable and inimitable. In this new collection of Tim Walker’s dazzling images, everything you see was specially constructed; the make-believe really happened. The halfforgotten, slow-paced world Walker conjures up is one of grandeur mixed with eccentricity, of opulence with romanticism, and of time stilled entirely. In his pursuit of the perfect picture no demand appears too unreasonable, no scenario too outlandish, no objective unattainable. If ever you have yearned to crashland a Spitfire in your drawing room, to paint a village yellow, to meet a real witch, to swing from several chandeliers or to ride with a pack of foxhounds led by a flying saucer, Tim Walker shows you it is entirely possible. His subjects include some of the biggest names in fashion and contemporary culture: Alber Elbaz sporting a pair of rabbit ears; Agyness Deyn in the sand dunes of Namibia; Alexander McQueen and a memento mori of skull and cigarettes; Helena Bonham Carter poised with Ray-Bans and a Diet Coke; Stella Tennant in a pink cloud among the rhododendrons of an English country garden… This exceptional and beautifully designed overview of a career caught in mid-flow reveals just how much one man’s singular vision has influenced contemporary tastes in fashion, beauty, glamour and portraiture. Complete with a foreword by singer and fellow creative spirit Kate Bush, an introduction by writer and curator Robin Muir, and an afterword by Walker himself, who also illuminates his pictures throughout with personal observations, this remarkable book – a testament to daydreams turned into photographs - is sure to become a fashion and photography collectable.

Shows how to use visual research to develop a personal aesthetic as a fashion designer in a global industry Fashion design is a process of investigating, researching and constantly questioning what you are doing and why. The first section of this comprehensive guide demonstrates the visual research process underpinning the work of design icons from Coco Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier to Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. It reveals the innumerable different areas of inspiration upon which they draw, from historical precursors such as Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ to traditional textiles from around the world. The second section introduces a wide range of themes that often inform fashion design research, including vintage and retro, the use of archives and the influence of art movements such as op art and surrealism. Finally a series of detailed case studies investigates the research process in the work of designers such as Paul Smith, Comme des Garçons, Burberry and Anna Sui, among others. Many visual examples are included the influences on their work are analysed.

A dazzling introduction to the work of China’s first internationally acclaimed woman jewelry designer, Anna Hu Inspired by Chinese art and lore, Western art and music, and the natural world, Anna Hu’s exquisitely designed and executed pieces have catapulted her to the top of the jewelry firmament in a few short years. This luxurious volume celebrates the completion of Anna Hu’s first 100 works, or ‘Opus 1’, as she calls the collection. Its texts address various aspects of Anna Hu’s work, including the relationship between her jewelry and fashion, the impact that her passionate study of the cello has had on her jewelry design, and the remarkable gemstones that inspired her to make some of her most virtuosic pieces. But the pièces de résistance of the book are the pieces themselves, many of them exquisitely photographed by master jewelry photographer David Behl. Some are as intricate as Chinese embroidery; others are as ethereal and delicate as butterflies; still others are jeweled reinterpretations of timeless works of music and art, from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Puccini’s Turandot to Monet’s Water Lilies and Van Gogh’s Irises. Celebrating eighty years of Chanel jewelry from the original 1932 designs to the new 2012 anniversary collection Gabrielle Chanel was a creature of contrasts: there was Mademoiselle Chanel of the most sumptuous baroque, of gilded wood and brilliant lacquer, of rococo mirrors and dazzling jewelry, a playful, unfettered Coco; but there was also Gabrielle Chanel of the tailored suit and the little black dress, of the severe cut, rigorous and restrained, of classicisme à la française. Out of this dialogue between ostentation and austerity, the jewelry that Chanel created throughout her long career has been celebrated in many revivals of her exquisite taste. Based on close archival research and interviews with Chanel’s colleagues and other witnesses to her life and career, this book is the first to set in relief this singular facet of a fascinating personality: her passion for fabulous jewels, for exceptional stones, for improbable marvels. From the direct re-creations of the 1932 Collection to the newest interpretations of comets and stars, plumes and feathers, and Chanel’s signature flower, the camellia, this book reflects the breathtaking spirit of her enterprise. A Master Watchmaker & His Art Michael Clerizo A timely celebration of the master watchmaker’s work George Daniels (1926–2011) is celebrated as the greatest horologist since Abraham-Louis Breguet. Over a 43-year career he crafted just 25 unique timepieces, with almost every component made either by hand or using antiquated machinery. Each watch would often take over 2,500 hours to complete. He is responsible for some of the most astounding watches of the modern era – all effortlessly executed with the geometric symmetry and style that became Daniels’s hallmark. This volume is elegantly illustrated with images of the dial and movement of each watch on a grand scale, and components are further enlarged to reveal the glorious details of tourbillions, escapements and remontoires. Four gatefolds are the perfect stages for displaying Daniels’s most ambitious works in detail, and never-before-seen sketches and technical drawings are also reproduced. Daniels worked closely with the author in the preparation of this book, recounting his life and career over innumerable conversations; the text is woven with quotations and images that express the master’s passion for the aesthetics of mechanics.

Foreword by Paola Antonelli

BIO DESIGN

Bio Design Nature • Science • Creativity William Myers Foreword by Paola Antonelli William Myers is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts’ MFA program in design criticism. He currently teaches design history at Hunter College and works for The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

470 colour illustrations 25.5 x 21.0cm 288pp ISBN 978 0 500 516270 October

£28.00

The first book of its kind to address the thrilling new developments in the field of biological design, where cutting-edge science is drawing on the utility of popular design to forge a sustainable revolution Designers and artists have always looked to nature for inspiration and materials, but only recently have they been able to alter and incorporate living organisms in their work. Bio Design examines some seventy such projects in the fields of architecture, industrial processes, education, fine art, material engineering and bioengineering. Each project is illustrated by a short text, images and captions that combine to explain the problems the venture tackles, and how living materials and processes were harnessed to solve them in sustainable and aesthetically pleasing ways. Many of the solutions also provoke thought about manipulating life for human ends. Bioluminescent algae; vases made by bees; lights that feed on moths; plants with human DNA; dogs that breathe for us: biology applied outside the lab has never been so intriguing, or so beautiful. Biological design is science future here and now. Design 71

A rich sourcebook of ideas for the most functional of typographic styles Classic modern design never goes out of style: it is merely retired or subtly adapted to its given place and time. Having surveyed hand-written, new vintage and new ornamental tendencies in type and lettering, graphicdesign guru Steven Heller now turn his encyclopaedic gaze on Modernism. New Modernist Type reveals how a graphic language of simplicity and economy has impacted contemporary design. Hundreds of examples by international designers are grouped into three thematic chapters: ‘Old Modern’ (when the machine age influenced graphic design); ‘Playful Modern’ (wit, humour and transformation); and ‘Meta Modern’ (typography as icon and symbol). An historical introduction places today’s tendencies in context, and the reference section features a list of designers’ websites. Whether in its rejection of visual clutter, or celebration of the Modernist aesthetic and functional minimalism, this work seeks – and achieves – timeless form.

The definitive monograph on one of Europe’s most influential creative partnerships, M/M (Paris), to mark their 20th anniversary Michael Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak formed their studio, M/M (Paris), in 1992. Since then, it has become one of this generation’s most distinctive and influential voices in graphic design. Originally working for small independent music labels, M/M soon caught the attention of the fashion world, and later developed long-term collaborations with a rich array of iconic artists, art directors and musical artists – most notably, Björk and Madonna. They have also produced unexpected threedimensional designs for the stage, restaurants and perfume. Designed by London’s Graphic Thought Facility, this alphabetically organized book ‘starts’ in the middle with the letter ‘M’, presenting projects and interviews with the designers and key collaborators, including Pierre Huyghe, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Philippe Parreno and Nicolas Bourriaud. Presenting the complete range of M/M’s work for the very first time, it offers rich insight into how they have created one of the most original and unified visual languages of our times.

A cornucopia of visual and technical extravagance celebrating the true history of printing The art of combining text and pictures for a range of printed material has been at the heart of the printer’s craft for hundreds of years. While the early pioneers of printing focused on books, others began using their presses for more humble uses, from handbills, signage and trade cards to popular reading material, games, advertisements and packaging. This so-called ‘jobbing’ work grew rapidly in volume and importance, yet is often overlooked in traditional histories of graphic design. This lavish volume is a vibrant mix of beautifully crafted printed ephemera from the past. It is a visual journey through the pre-history of graphic design, charting the printer’s progress from jobbing tradesman to the heights and hallowed status of artistic printer. Showcasing work from a host of anonymous talents as well as seminal practitioners such as Pierre Simon Fournier, William Morris and Oscar Harpel, it reveals how those working on both sides of the Atlantic responded to everyday communication issues with original solutions and breathtaking flair and skill.

Refreshingly strange and exquisitely produced: a bibliophile’s treasure, perfect for anyone whose imagination is fired by the esoteric and macabre Erik Desmazières is acknowledged as a master of contemporary printmaking. With breathtaking virtuosity and a unique, dreamlike vision, he re-creates interiors, cityscapes and fantastical compositions drawn from a Piranesian world. For this book – the first to include the artist’s rare work in colour – Desmazières has delved deep into the arcane theme of cabinets of curiosities. Taking as his starting point the melancholy musings of the 17th-century physician and antiquary Sir Thomas Browne, he has reinterpreted these shadowy collections of the recondite, rare and bizarre as a series of meditations on the vanity of earthly life. Death and decay are never far below the surface, as a depiction of Sir Thomas Browne’s own skull, disinterred and displayed in a museum until the 1920s, reminds us. Patrick Mauriès traces the preoccupations of Browne and his fellow collectors through the pages of history, showing how abstruse objects and spectres of death have now entered the cultural mainstream.

£24.95

A unique lens through which to view the modern world: twenty-eight insider accounts of national histories Global histories tend to be written from the narrow viewpoint of a single author and a single perspective, with the inevitable bias that that entails. But how do writers and citizens in the different countries of the world view their own past? What key events and influences shaped those perspectives? And how accurate are the views of foreign commentators? Histories of Nations is the first book to tell national stories from the inside. Twenty-eight leading writers and scholars from twenty-eight countries give thoughtful, engaging and often passionate accounts of their own nations’ histories. The countries have been selected to represent every continent and every type of state: large and small; mature democracies and religious autocracies; states that have existed for thousands of years and those born as recently as the 20th century. Timelines listing key events and a broad array of carefully researched illustrations support the diverse and wide-ranging narratives. Original, thought-provoking and authoritative, this is a crucial primer for the modern age.

The definitive account of each and every legion of Imperial Rome ‘Beautifully designed and comprehensively illustrated, the book’s authoritative and informative text dramatically brings to life the ancient world’s most successful military machine’ Professor Lawrence Keppie The legions of Rome are the archetypal elite fighting force of antiquity. For almost half a millennium they secured the known world under the power of the Caesars; yet until now there has been no authoritative account for the general reader and student of the origins and history of each and every legion of the imperial age. The Complete Roman Legions fills that gap. From the mountains of Armenia to the wilds of northern Britain, we follow individual legions as they secure the frontiers or raise rival generals to the imperial purple. Full accounts are given of Roman army reforms, legionary equipment, battle tactics and the legionaries as builders and engineers. Data files on each legion and detailed box features on major sites and events add depth to the main discussion. Written by leading authorities and packed with appealing illustrations, from inscriptions and armour to reconstruction paintings and modern re-enactment groups, this book will quickly establish itself as the standard work on the subject. Amarna and its People Barry Kemp A tour-de-force of archaeological writing, this is the definitive account of Amarna and its inhabitants, the fruits of more than three decades of research and excavation This book brings together for the first time the history of Tell el-Amarna, from its foundation by Akhenaten in c. 1344 BC to its abandonment just 16 or 17 years later. Barry Kemp evokes the sights and smells of Amarna itself, bringing to life its people – not only royalty, but also citizens such as the high priest Panehsy, the vizier Nakht, the general Ramose and the sculptor Thutmose, whose bust of Nefertiti is a masterpiece of ancient art. Recent excavations reveal that, although Akhenaten had overturned the old religion and introduced worship of the Aten, the sun’s disk, beneath the surface the old belief in the traditional Egyptian gods continued. Likewise themes of abundance and prosperity depicted in the art are contradicted by new evidence showing malnutrition in childhood, skeletal injuries and early death. Insights such as these, together with its abundant illustrations, make this volume essential reading for anyone interested in the history of urbanism, the mysterious Amarna interlude, and the enigmatic Akhenaten.

The leading Maya scholar and one of the world’s finest photographers of ancient sites bring the rich cultural heritage of the Maya vividly and authoritatively to life While Europe was buried in the Dark Ages, the Maya were producing astonishing sculpture, stelae and wall murals, as well as building magnificent temples, tombs and ball courts. This volume pairs the leading Maya scholar and one of the world’s finest photographers of ancient sites to trace the rise and fall of Mayan civilization through its great royal cities. From El Mirador to the cities of the Maya Renaissance and finally to Chichen Itza, where the 700-year flowering of the Mayan people came to a halt, the riveting history of powerful dynasties, political intrigues and a flourishing culture is illuminated through new research and evocative photographs. A new reading of artifacts, reliefs, murals, maps and other archaeological evidence allows Coe to untangle the complex sequence of internecine ritual warfare that fatally weakened the late Maya era. Documented with specially commissioned maps and plans based on the latest research, Royal Cities of the Ancient Maya will be irresistible to everyone from the casual visitor to Pre-Columbian experts.

The Land of Serenity Matthieu Ricard Now available in a compact paperback edition, Matthieu Ricard’s sublime portrait of Bhutan Tucked away between China and India in the heart of the Himalayas, Bhutan remains a uniquely distinct country. Few photographers have been granted permission to live in this long-inaccessible kingdom, where life quietly unfolds to the rhythm of traditions amidst the magnificent, unspoilt landscape. Nearly thirty years ago, Matthieu Ricard went to Bhutan to study with Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, a highly revered Tibetan Buddhist master. He spent eight years in Bhutan with him, and has continued to return to the ‘land of the thunder dragon’ – or Druk-yul, as Bhutan is known in Bhutanese – throughout his life, discovering on each occasion another of its invaluable treasures. As a Buddhist monk, he has not only witnessed private religious ceremonies, the life of a great Buddhist master, and exceptional works of art, but has also participated in the daily lives of local villagers. His encounters and experiences are recorded here in this sublime voyage to the heart of Bhutan.

‘Tibet is the Roof of the World, a place where you feel that you are in the sky just as much as you are on the earth. The intense blueness of space contrasts sharply with the deep green of eastern Tibet’s rolling grasslands and the mineral colours of the west with its expanses of barren rock. For over a thousand years, Buddhist culture has been at the heart of Tibetan society, and anyone who has travelled across these high plateaux will understand how this contemplative civilization flourished in a landscape of such vastness… This book seeks to bear witness to all that survives of that ancient world – a world capable of making a valuable contribution to contemporary life. It also aims to provide a glimpse of a unique culture that is desperately trying to preserve its authenticity, despite the major upheavals that have shaken the land of its birth. … May the images that follow serve as an homage to inner beauty.’ – Matthieu Ricard, from his Introduction to the book Illustrated Travel 101

Richard Wagner The Sorcerer of Bayreuth Barry Millington Barry Millington is chief music critic for the London Evening Standard and the editor of The Wagner Journal. He has written and edited, or co-edited, seven books on Wagner, including The Wagner Compendium, The Ring of the Nibelung: A Companion, and the New Grove Guide to Wagner and his Operas.

£24.95

A radical – and occasionally provocative – reappraisal of one of the 19th century’s greatest and most perplexing composers, published in anticipation of his bicentenary in 2013 Richard Wagner (1813–1883) is one of the most influential – and most polarizing – composers in the history of music. Over the course of his long career, he produced a stream of spellbinding works that challenged musical convention through their richness and tonal experimentation, ultimately paving the way for modernism. This book offers an in-depth and utterly approachable account of Wagner’s life, work and times. Moving at a fast pace, it encompasses a refreshingly wide range of themes, from the composer’s sources of inspiration, his fetish for exotic silks, and his relationship with his wives and mistresses, to accusations of anti-Semitism, the operas’ protocinematic nature, and the turbulent legacy both of the Bayreuth Festival and of Wagnerism itself. Making use of the very latest scholarship – much of it undertaken by the author himself as editor of The Wagner Journal – Barry Millington here reassesses received notions about Wagner and his work, demolishing ill-informed opinion in favour of proper critical understanding. The result is a radical – and sometimes controversial – reappraisal of this most perplexing of composers. With its many intriguing images and quotations from contemporary documents, Richard Wagner: The Sorcerer of Bayreuth will fascinate anyone interested in music and in the wider cultural life of the 19th century and beyond. By far the most thorough book ever published on the great auteur, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday in 2012 Andrei Tarkovsky was the most important Russian filmmaker of the postwar era, and one of the world’s most renowned cinematic geniuses. He directed the first five of his seven films – Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, The Mirror and Stalker – in the Soviet Union, but defected to Italy in 1982, where he made Nostalghia. His final film, Sacrifice, was produced in Sweden in 1985. His work is characterized by spirituality and metaphysical themes, very long takes, an absence of conventional dramatic structure and plot, and his own distinctive style of cinematography. This book collects film stills and documentary photographs from each of the films, exploring the cinematographic side to his oeuvre. Tarkovsky’s own writings offer a wealth of insights into his poetic and intellectual views on cinematography, which he described as ‘sculpting time’. Moreover, it reproduces many personal photographs, in doing so providing a revealing visual biography of a great artist who died aged only 54.

An intimate look at a marvellous hotchpotch of rooms and decoration in the country houses of Scotland From breakfront cabinets filled with generations of monogrammed heirloom china to canopy beds keeping the chill of a Scottish winter at bay to cabbage-rose slip-covered sofas nestled under tall Gothic windows, this book takes the reader on a tour of a remarkable group of houses and castles that have survived the vicissitudes of Scotland’s turbulent history and remain in the hands of their original families. James Fennell’s photographs show inviting living rooms and tousled bedrooms, print-lined hallways and well-trampled mudrooms. Telling details capture the eccentric personalities of their owners – Scottish chieftains, lairds and nobles drawn from the pages of Walter Scott; charming decorative details, such as a red silk bell-pull against green floral wallpaper or the curve of a wonderfully carved antique chair. The houses are not the instant creation of trendy decorators – they have evolved over generations, furnished with heirlooms and cherished hand-me-downs. James Knox tells the tales of the more colourful inhabitants of these homes in his anecdotal text. This book will be cherished by lovers of Scotland, history or decoration.

Captures a bygone age of breathtaking splendour – sure to captivate art lovers and historians alike The Russian imperial residence of Tsarskoye Selo is now more than 300 years old. Catherine the Great’s extravagant love of art and decoration is evident in its dazzling interiors and in the extensive park, which is filled with fanciful pavilions, bridges and monuments. Catherine also commissioned Alexander Palace for her favourite grandson, the future Alexander I; this later became home to the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family until their exile to Siberia. Fortunately, many of Tsarskoye Selo’s magnificent interiors survived the vicissitudes of history, while others, such as the extravagant Amber Room, have recently been painstakingly restored to their former opulence. The palaces are a glorious showcase for Russian art and craftsmanship, from the mirrors and lavish gilding of the Great Hall to the blood-red beauty of the Agate Rooms, their walls lined with Siberian jasper. This superbly produced book features hundreds of specially commissioned photographs and archive images that brilliantly showcase the estate not only as a piece of art history, but as a glorious testimony to the tastes of the Romanov family.

Surveys developments at the cutting edge of research into intelligent and interactive environments One of the more exciting realities of 21st-century life is that objects are now able – with the help of embedded technology – to sense, think, act and communicate. Very soon, every building, city and landscape component will be equipped with communicative and computational capacities: we shall be surrounded by sentient architecture. This book documents the role of architecture in shaping this new reality in multiple research trajectories launched and guided by the authors at the University of Toronto, MIT, Harvard Graduate School of Design and the University of Hong Kong. The projects establish an interdisciplinary platform involving artists, designers, scientists and engineers spanning different institutions and continents who all take a technological approach to spatial problems that is attuned to the dynamics of living systems. The aim is to develop from these collaborative experiments a digitally enhanced architecture that is well-equipped to handle persistent and emerging challenges in building a healthy and sustainable environment.

The first major book to document fully the architect’s vital engagement with photography Le Corbusier’s development was inextricably connected to the rise of the century’s most popular visual medium: photography. This remarkable book traces the many ways in which he used photography to define and disseminate his work and ideas around the world. This unique, multifaceted portrait presents the architect and his work in six chapters, each by an expert in a particular aspect of Le Corbusier’s work: a photographic biography; his secret travel photographs; promotional photography; his approach to the printed page; his use of large-scale imagery in his buildings and exhibitions; and contemporary photographic interpretations of his work. The candid, personal, artistic and often unexpected images that appear in this volume offer new insights and ways to appreciate the man and architect. This is the vital ‘missing volume’ in any Le Corbusier aficionado’s library. Architecture 123

124 Landscape Design

A global survey of the most innovative digital practices in landscape design Despite its importance to place-making, urban planning and the environment, landscape design has often been cast in an inferior role to architecture. Typically, as little as 3% of a project’s construction budget is allocated to the space that surrounds a building – but as greater awareness of a building’s setting increases, this is changing. This dynamic publication presents work by the 50 most innovative practices across the globe. From dedicated landscape designers to architects turning their hand to the horizontal plane, an entirely new language of design is reshaping our gardens, public squares, leisure areas and business ‘parks’ and cities. Among the practices included in the book are designers who have bridged modernism with newer forms (Emergent, Adriaan Geuze), new environmental attitudes (Walter Hood, Turenscape), architects whose work fuses with the earth’s contours (Zaha Hadid, MVRDV), and a new generation of designers only just emerging from university. A successor to Digital Architecture Now, this large-format publication is packed with inspiration and new spatial ideas for a world of more beautifully designed outdoors.
