GENEROUS SPONSORS MAKE THE SO8THS/NIKON THREE-DAY EXTRA SPECIAL FOR AMATEURS Amateur Competitors Applaud the Sponsors for their Support

A huge thank you went to the title sponsor NIKON who presented the winners of the three divisions with a Nikon D3200 Camera Kit (with an 18-55mm VR lens). Kathy Viele, Aiken, SC, rode Matariki to the victory in Training (T3D), Sarah Zimmer, Martinsville, VA, and Mardi Gras were the Novice (N3D) winners and Sara Miles, Assawoman, VA, and Misty’s RainDrop were the Beginner Novice (BN3D) winners. The competitors weren’t the only ones going home with NIKON products. Gay Glenn was the volunteer who was the lucky recipient of a NIKON Coolpix S5200 Camera after her name was drawn out of the Most Valuable Volunteer’s bucket. Everyone was a winner, thanks to the sponsors at this year’s event because every Competitor, Clinician and Official went home with a souvenir NIKON item ranging from laptop bags, to flexible keyboards, t-shirts, mood lights, luggage tags, umbrellas and so much more. The title sponsor NIKON was extremely generous with their support of this event because they recognize the value of the amateur riders.

It is this same passion that drives NIKON each day. We look forward to a long relationship with So8ths!” remarked Bill Pekala, General Manager, NIKON Pro Services. “Our sponsors have helped make the Southern 8ths Three-Day a destination for the amateur riders,” remarked Southern 8ths Farm owner Brad Turley. “NIKON’s support has been fabulous. Besides providing the winners with high quality cameras, they added in a camera for volunteers, provided a dozen cameras for the competitors to take part in a photo contest and then sent many extra items that impressed everyone.” The Sponsors Say Thank You to the Amateurs with their many Prizes The list of sponsors continued with Adequan, Bit of Britain, Brant Gamma, Breyer, TheCelebrityCafe.com, Cosequin, Dressage Collection, Ecolicious, FITS, Foxden Equine, Higher Standards Saddle Soap, Horse Quencher, The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program, Kan Teq, Mane Street Horse and Pet, Mrs Pastures Cookies, SciencePure/Pureform, Smartpak, Southern 8ths Farm, and USEA. Every sponsor donated products that made this event extra special for the amateurs who competed.

Both Adequan and Cosequin provided buckets that went to the competitors and were used in the veterinary box and other locations throughout the weekend. Cosequin also presented a bucket of prizes to the second place recipients. The 2nd place winners included James Baker, Southern Pines, NC, and Wings in T3D, Samantha DiMaria, Kendall Park, NJ, and Valentine for N3D and Catie Pannill, Martinsville, VA, and Kokoa Kat for BN3D. The Jockey Club Low Score Thoroughbred Incentive award of a ribbon, $50 cash prize and embroidered Jockey Club duffle bag also was won by DiMaria. James was also the recipient of the Foxden Goodwill Ambassador Award for his leadership throughout the weekend. Baker noted that the support of the sponsors at the So8ths/Nikon HOTC event has a much deeper meaning because for once the pomp and ceremony was not being focused on the top level, but rather on those who also deserve it.

Baker’s words were echoed by many when he said, “It makes a great deal of difference to me that these sponsors will recognize and support us at the lower levels. Too often only the top level gets any recognition yet it is the lower levels that provide the financial support through their membership, through day to day products and entry fees.” In addition James won the highly sought after Bit of Britain Adult Rider Low Score grooming tote with brushes, a Bit of Britain bridle and a gift certificate all valued at just over $500. After the event Jim expressed his gratitude to Bit of Britain owner and Eventer, John Nunn, noting, “Thank you for your support and the quality of your products, but you should be here. This is the premier Training Three-Day that knocks the socks off of other T3Ds. You need to ride this event.”

Brant Gamma was the official show photographer. She provided the winner of each division with an 8x10 picture frame to include a photo of their choice. One of the winners, Viele commented, “This weekend has been a long-term goal and your photos will help me relive the great moments and share them with friends.” “I’d like to thank Brant Gamma for her support and helmet cams coverage as well as John Nunn at Bit of Britain for all he does for Southern 8ths and the adult riders,” remarked Turley. Breyer donated a couple of model horses to the young volunteers in the group while TheCelebrityCafe.com provided a gift basket to volunteer Carolyn Sellers. Higher Standards Saddle Soap jars were given to the top three finishers in each division. FITS provided shirts that were added to the Horse Quencher Sportsmanship award won by Taylor Pence, Concord, NC, who was competing on Goldie. Everyone received some Mrs Pastures Cookies and there were lots of happy horses being fed those cookies throughout the competition. SmartPak provided each competitor with a paste supplement and all the Officials received a SmartPak tote. Cosequin gave them all vet wraps and coupons. Both Foxden and SciencePure provided gift certificates to many of the competitors. As a way to help thank the sponsors, notebooks were put out on a table throughout the competition so that anyone could write a note to the sponsors. Taylor wrote to Horse Quencher, “I won many of your products this weekend and cannot wait to try them. Thank you so much for contributing to such a wonderful event.” The Dressage Collection Low Dressage Score prize of a beautiful Classic Handbag will probably end up with the trainer, Suzanne Lacy of Riverbend Farm, since she brought a bunch of riders to compete at this year’s event. Sarah Zimmer, Martinsville, VA, had the lowest dressage score of 30.70. The Ecolicious Best Turned Out award of their all natural shampoo and conditioner went to Pannill, Baker and Manny Diemer, Raeford, NC, who placed 4th on Krugerrand in N3D. Ecolicious products were also given out to a number of the other competitors who placed at the top. Additionally Ecolicious owner Petra McGowan was thinking out of the box and offered a donation of all of their products to one lucky recipient who would use them and document their use. That recipient was Erin Hite, Durham, NC, who commented, “I won the raffle and used your products over the weekend. They smell great and work. I love that they are natural. Cody and I worked a year to get here and really appreciate your support at our own mini-Rolex!”

The Mane Street Best Conditioned Horse Award and the Kan Teq Closest Lady to Optimum X-C Time was won by Sarah Baker, Southern Pines, NC, who rode Poetic Justice to a 4th place finish in T3D. Sarah was thrilled with her gift basket filled with cool horse items and an embroidered cooler from Mane Street as well as a Safety Vest from Kan Teq. “This is an amazing event,” commented Sarah. “Nobody treats the competitors better!” Wendy McCaughan, owner of Kan Teq, was there throughout the competition and provided vests to competitors to try out. Wendy even took part in some of the contests and won the prize for the SmartPak Most Innovative Hat and received an embroidered vest from Southern 8ths Farm. Wendy took some time after the event to offer her comments noting, “I would like to say how impressed I was by the amazing energy shown by those behind the scenes. They were truly tireless in their mission to gather every ounce of feedback, every sponsor photo opportunity and every moment of action whether on the magnificent cross-country course or in various clinics.

“Everything in the indoor arena was so beautifully presented with no detail left to chance. I particularly liked the vast display of prizes. Also the effort given to reinforce every sponsor’s contribution was absolutely brilliant (i.e. the Nikon Photo Contest, the sponsor books, the Sponsor Hat Contest) with each idea cleverly feeding all media and social media requirements! Clearly the pre event organization and the commitment of a loyal and quality team helped make this the slick, professional event that it turned out to be. “All the online postings on Facebook, also on Chronicle of the Horse, reveal clearly how happy the riders were. With facilities that are second to none, clinics and demos that were simply great, added to the generosity and interest of the host and hostess, So8ths event is an absolute must for any enthusiastic rider wanting to progress in the sport of Eventing. “It was a fantastic opportunity for Kan Teq and I am so pleased to have had the time to meet riders, trainers, grooms and the wonderful organizing team. It is so valuable to me to be able to explain, fit and let the riders take and try out our innovative vest with no time pressure. Plus the relaxed evening activities made for the easy striking up of new friendships and because of that my social network just got a whole lot wider! My thanks to everyone who not only gave me the opportunity to become a sponsor of this event but who helped me maximize my sponsorship.” USEA also supported the event through their USEA Classic Series sponsor package. A Final Heartfelt Thank You Of special note was all the support given by Southern 8ths Farm owner Brad Turley and his girlfriend Pati Martin. They provided t-shirts to all the volunteers, fans to the competitors and gifts to the clinicians and officials. Both Brad and Pati were extremely heartened by the sponsorship support. The Long Format is something Brad truly believes in and recognizing the amateur competitors has always been his personal goal. “I was truly overwhelmed by the sponsorship we received for our amateur level competition. These competitors are the ones who deserve to be recognized. All of us at Southern 8ths Farm, from the staff and volunteers to the officials and clinicians and especially the competitors were and still are extremely appreciative of the support given by 21 well-known equine companies. We are all touched that these companies were willing to show their support to a host of riders who represent the foundation of the sport of Eventing. I personally want to say thank you to each and every sponsor that made this year’s So8ths/Nikon HOTC Three-Day such a success,” Brad commented. Finally, it was Viele who echoed many of the words spoken by the competitors when she wrote this note to Brad and Pati: “You have built an amazing facility here; well thought out, outstanding footing for Dressage, beautiful tracks and grassy gallops, and challenging, interesting cross-country courses. I can’t imagine the countless hours and generous financial support it has taken for you to put this three-day on. But you have made this adult amateur’s dream come true. “It’s been many years that I wanted to compete in a Long Format and finally doing it I’ve found the experience has exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned things about competing, about myself, about stable management. But most importantly I’ve been reminded about what a wonderful, enthusiastic and supportive community eventers are; from the staff, clinicians and volunteers, to my own friends and coach. The enthusiasm for the Long Format runs deep and I’m honored to have gotten to take a crack at it. Dear Nikon, I wanted to send you a hand written note to emphasize how appreciative I am for your underwriting of the Nikon Heart of the Carolinas (NHOTC) Long Format Event held at Southern 8ths, but I my dominant hand is in a cast from ligament surgery after the event. (I tore a ligament off my thumb in April and competed in a brace because I didn't want to miss NHOTC and scheduled the surgery for the week after). I was hoping if I waited, I would be able to write legibly, but that's just not happening quickly enough, so please accept this email in its place. I am a mother of two middle-schoolers who works full time in the K-12 educational arena. I also aspire to constantly improve my riding and eventing is my passion (or "obsession" if you ask my husband). You have done something truly special in supporting NHOTC. This event is unique in being a trend-setter for promoting long format events at the lower levels and for its focus on folks like me the adult amateur who works full-time. The vast majority of eventers are amateurs who compete at these lower levels and the long format events are both an ultimate test and an unprecedented learning opportunity for us. NHOTC was event that transformed USEA policies to allow for the long format at the Novice and Beginner Novice levels. There are only a handful of long format events in the entire country and since HOTC, all six have added the Novice level in their long formats! In talking to competitors who have competed at the other events, I learned that none of them are as top-notch as NHOTC. Southern 8ths treats competitors like Olympic riders. I have competed several times at the American Eventing Championships and Southern 8ths preparations and execution of the event rivaled the quality at the national level and exceded it in several ways. The educational opportunities to learn from international level riders occur nowhere else than NHOTC, the competitor's barn has much larger than average stalls, beautiful architecture and unprecedented amenities for competitors. Moreover, no other event promotes community among the riders like Southern 8ths. The sponsored meals and social activities make life-long friends at every event as well as full stomaches! I have participated every year since Brad Turley started hosting them and it is the highlight of every year for us. I urge you to continue your support of your signature event. There is no higher quality event to which you lend your name. Thank you for making this event possible. It means a great deal to all of us adult riders. Horse Events

Southern 8ths Farm is a premier Long Format equestrian training center. It is a horse lover’s playground with a steeplechase track, multiple cross-country and show jumping venues, regulation size dressage rings, a derby course and miles of groomed trails. These facilities in addition to a modern guest barn and large covered arena provide all the amenities a rider needs to hone their Long Format equestrian skills. was another exciting day at Southern 8ths Farm for the So8ths/Nikon ThreeDay Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas,” on Saturday, May 4. Beginner Novice, Novice and Training level riders challenged a course designed by well-known course designer Tremaine Cooper and built by Tyson Rementer. Leading the way in the Beginner Novice division after combining both their Dressage and Cross-Country scores were Kathy Viele and Matariki with their low score of 33.40. This was Kathy’s first time at Southern 8ths Farm and she was pleased. “This is one of the nicest venues. More people should know about this,” commented Kathy. As a longtime Eventer, Kathy was also pleased with all that she learned from my fellow competitors.

Quarter Horse Reining Rodeos

Novice rider Sarah Zimmer and Mardi Gras held onto their lead claimed after the Dressage after negotiating and fault free Cross-Country (30.70). After Sarah came off the course for the second year in a row her beaming smile was evident. “I love the course,” she noted. “This event is so well organized.”

Come to South Carolina for 3 Days of Fun So8ths/Nikon HOTC Three-Day Invites Spectators Make Your Reservations Now: May 3-5 April 19—CHESTERFIELD, SC–For a fun outdoor weekend, it’s hard to beat watching great horses and riders compete in a beautiful setting. Like the famous Carolina Cup, the So8ths/Nikon ThreeDay Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas” offers spectators a chance to see top-notch horses in thrilling competition. But Southern 8ths offers several things not available at The Cup: spectators can get a lot closer to the horses, stroll around the beautiful grounds, mingle with the riders afterwards, and…it’s free! The format is different too—since riders compete one after another, there’s very little down time. Competition is spread over three days—May 3, 4, and 5—so folks can choose which day they want to come. On Friday the riders will compete in Dressage, a classical form of riding that is akin to ballet on horseback. Saturday will see the most action, with an endurance phase which tests the horses’ fitness, and then a series of challenging cross-country obstacles. obstacle. Horses actually jump into a lovely pond, canter through the water, and jump out on the other side. A series of banks and drop jumps are also thrilling to watch. On Sunday the horses put in a round of Show Jumping, with the jumps varying in height depending on the division. At the end of all three phases, the scores are tallied and the winners announced. Farm owner Brad Turley is hosting the third annual So8ths/Nikon HOTC Three-Day at his Southern 8ths Farm in Chesterfield, SC. Brad moved from Connecticut several years ago in search of warm winters, and he liked the area so much that he designed his farm around his love of competition. Specifically, he promotes the Long Format in Eventing. “Few people compete in the Long Format anymore, because it requires a lot more preparation for horse and rider, it’s time consuming, and it’s tougher,” he said. The Long Format includes a Roads & Tracks portion that stresses endurance and fitness. It adds miles and another phase to the already challenging cross-country day. The jumps are all different, all challenging, and all thrilling. Horses jump not at a sedate canter, but at a full gallop. Every second counts! The farm, located on the South Carolina-North Carolina border, is beautifully designed. The rolling hills offer a great view, and spectators can watch Dressage and the always exciting Show Jumping from a prime location. Strategically placed around the farm are a number of unusual wood carvings. Originally designed as jumps, they are stunning works of art. This unique competition attracts top amateur riders from up and down the East coast. Food is available on site, but spectators should bring chairs. Moving up the skill level, there are slots for jump judges, bit checkers, ring stewards, and scribes. Training for all jobs will be offered prior to the event. If you can follow simple directions, we want you. Check out the web site for details on the available slots and what is expected. Each day needs a different set of people, from Friday’s dressage to Saturday’s roads & tracks and cross-country, to the show jumping on Sunday. Southern 8ths will feed you lunch, give you a T-shirt, and offer the opportunity for your group to use the facility. That’s right: saddle clubs or any organized group that provides at least five volunteers will be allowed to bring their own horses and ride on the grounds of this gorgeous farm, for free! Grab some friends and spend the weekend. Nearby accommodations are reasonable, and Saturday night features a great barbecue for riders and workers. Join the Saturday afternoon Kentucky Derby party, where the race will be shown on a big screen TV inside the schooling arena. Contests, prizes and drawings are part of the fun. This year the educational day on May 2 garnered rave reviews from competitors and officials. “I loved it!” exclaimed Sue Smithson, president of the ground jury. “You now have so much education here with the Long Format that everyone should do it.”

Thursday’s topics included vet inspections, figuring times for Roads and Tracks, and a clinic to let riders know what the judge is looking for in the Dressage segment. “We’re judging the forest, not the trees.” Smithson explained her expectations for Dressage. “Ride the horse, then ride the test and get the most out of your horse.” She explained that many people concentrate on the test rather than the horse. Brad Turley, the owner of Southern 8ths Farm and organizer of the event, has a passion for classic eventing. “Few people compete in the Long Format anymore, because it requires a lot more preparation for horse and rider, it’s time consuming, and it’s tougher,” he said. In addition to Dressage, Cross-Country and Show Jumping, the Long Format includes a Roads and Tracks portion that stresses endurance and fitness. Sara Baker, a young competitor from Southern Pines, grew up watching her mother compete in the Long Format. “It’s great to do the classic eventing,” she said. “I wish I had had this instruction before my first Three Day.” Her lovely gelding is named Poetic Justice. Sara and her dad, James Baker, are both riding Training level. Interestingly, James came to the Heart of the Carolinas first Three Day competition three years ago and competed in Beginner Novice. The next year he rode his horse, Wings, in the Novice division. Now the same horse and rider combination are up to Training Level. Jim’s wife will be joining them on Friday as groom and ground man. On Friday, May 3, competitors in three different divisions rode Dressage tests in the beautifully manicured Southern 8ths arena for the So8ths/Nikon Three-Day Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas.” The riders, who traveled from several different states, seemed thrilled with the first day of the Long Format Event. In essence the best Dressage scores set the tone for the remainder of the competition. If a horse and rider have a low score, and accrue no penalty points over the next two days, they come out on top.

First to go were the Training level riders. Interestingly, these are the highest level riders at this event, which is geared for amateurs. Coming in first place was Kaitlyn Mosing on her horse Powderhound with a score of 31.4. Second were Kathy Viele and Matariki. Kaitlyn has been competing about 12 years, but she’s had this horse only a few months. Since Kaitlyn had never done a three-day competition, she thinks this will be a good bonding experience for her and her horse. This is their third Dressage competition, and she was pleased with her win. She especially appreciated the perspective from the officials. “Everyone here is so welcoming and so eager to help you. It’s a great facility, and I’d recommend it to anybody.” She’d like to return next year.

Despite her horse being a little wound up, he delivered a stellar performance, Sarah said. They actually had the best score of the day, 30.7. “I love the Long Format. I wish there were more of them. It’s like a whole different sport; it adds a lot and it’s more fun.” This is the only place where professionals come together and help the amateurs, she added. This is her second year at Southern 8ths and she thought the competition was great. Finishing just behind her were Samantha Hay and Tre Jolie. The Beginner Novice division is for horses and riders who are just starting their careers in Eventing. Taylor Pence and her lovely mare Goldie put in a solid ride with a score of 32.8. Taylor loved the judges’ advice and heeded it. Goldie knows the difference between a schooling session and the show ring, and Taylor actually

Beginner Novice, Novice and Training level riders challenged a course designed by well-known course designer Tremaine Cooper and built by Tyson Rementer. Leading the way in the Beginner Novice division after combining both their Dressage and Cross-Country scores were Kathy Viele and Matariki with their low score of 33.40. Once the riders took the time to ensure their horses were comfortable they started to prep for Sunday’s Show Jumping by walking the course with the course Sarah Zimmer and Mardi Gras designer Marc Donovan. That evening they enjoyed a barbeque filled with a variety of contests including a fun Nikon Photo Contest where competitors used Nikon consigned cameras to take pictures that had to include the words Nikon in the image. There was also a special Sponsor Hat Contest where each person showcased one of the sponsors on their hats and enjoyed displaying their hats in a dancing parade. Wendy McCaughan of Kanteq, one of the sponsors, was also a winner in the hat contest for her own sponsor hat creation. The special event of the evening was the choosing of who would be the winner of the Volunteer Competitor Special Prize. Those present were asked to put the name of volunteers they felt went above and beyond. From those names Southern 8ths Farm owner Brad Turley held the bucket from which the final winner was pulled. The camera was handed to a welldeserved Gay Glenn who was shocked but thrilled. Sunday, May 5 is the final day of this year’s event. it’s free! The format is different too — since riders compete one after another, there’s very little down time. Competition is spread over three days — May 3, 4, and 5 — so folks can choose which day they want to come. On Friday the riders will compete in Dressage, a classical form of riding that is akin to ballet on horseback. Saturday will see the most action, with an endurance phase which tests the horses’ fitness, and then a series of challenging cross-country obstacles. One of the most beautiful — and exciting — is a series of jumps at the water obstacle. Horses actually jump into a lovely pond, canter through the water, and jump out on the other side. A series of banks and drop jumps are also thrilling to watch. On Sunday the horses put in a round of Show Jumping, with the jumps varying in height depending on the division. At the end of all three phases, the scores are tallied and the winners announced. Farm owner Brad Turley is hosting the third annual So8ths/Nikon HOTC Three-Day at his Southern 8ths Farm in Chesterfield, SC. Brad moved from Connecticut several years ago in search of warm winters, and he liked the area so much that he designed his farm around his love of competition. Specifically, he promotes the Long Format in Eventing. “Few people compete in the Long Format anymore, because it requires a lot more preparation for horse and rider, it’s time consuming, and it’s tougher,” he said. The Long Format includes a Roads & Tracks portion that stresses endurance and fitness. It adds miles and another phase to the already challenging cross-country day. The jumps are all different, all challenging, and all thrilling. Horses jump not at a sedate canter, but at a full gallop. Every second counts! The farm, located on the South Carolina/North Carolina border, is beautifully designed. The rolling hills offer a great view, and spectators can watch Dressage and the always exciting Show Jumping

Gay Glenn was the volunteer who was the lucky recipient of a NIKON Coolpix S5200 Camera after her name was drawn out of the Most Valuable Volunteer’s bucket. Everyone was a winner, thanks to the sponsors at this year’s event because every Competitor, Clinician and Official went home with a souvenir NIKON item ranging from laptop bags, to flexible keyboards, t-shirts, mood lights, luggage tags, umbrellas and so much more. Every sponsor donated products that made this event extra special for the amateurs who competed. Both Adequan and Cosequin provided buckets that went to the competitors and were used in the veterinary box and other locations throughout the weekend. Cosequin also presented a bucket of prizes to the second place recipients. The 2nd place winners included James Baker, Southern Pines, NC, and Wings in T3D, Samantha DiMaria, Kendall Park, NJ, and Valentine for N3D and Catie Pannill, Martinsville, VA, and Kokoa Kat for BN3D. One of the winners, Viele, commented, “This weekend has been a long-term goal and your photos will help me relive the great moments and share them with friends.” “I’d like to thank Brant Gamma for her support and helmet cams coverage as well as John Nunn at Bit of Britain for all he does for Southern 8ths and the adult riders,” remarked Turley. Breyer donated a couple of model horses to the young volunteers in the group while CelebrityCafe.com provided a gift basket to volunteer Carolyn Sellers. Higher Standards Saddle Soap jars were given to the top three finishers in each division. FITS provided shirts that were added to the Horse Quencher Sportsmanship award won by Taylor Pence, Concord, NC, who was competing on Goldie. Everyone received some Mrs Pastures Cookies and there were lots of happy horses being fed those cookies throughout the competition. SmartPak provided each competitor with a paste supplement and all the Officials received a SmartPak tote. Cosequin gave them all vet wraps and coupons. Both Foxden and SciencePure provided gift certificates to many of the competitors. As a way to help thank the sponsors, notebooks were put out on a table throughout the competition so that anyone could write a note to the sponsors. Additionally, Ecolicious owner Petra McGowan was thinking out of the box and offered a donation of all of their products to one lucky recipient who would use them and document their use. That recipient was Erin Hite, Durham, NC, who commented, “I won the raffle and used your products over the weekend. They smell great and work. I love that they are natural. Cody and I worked a year to get here and really appreciate your support at our own mini-Rolex!” The Mane Street Best Conditioned Horse Award and the Kan Teq Closest Lady to Optimum X-C Time was won by Sarah Baker, Southern Pines, NC, who rode Poetic Justice to a 4th place finish in T3D. Sarah was thrilled with her gift basket filled with cool horse items and an embroidered cooler from Mane Street as well as a Safety Vest from Kan Teq. “This is an amazing event,” commented Sarah. “Nobody treats the competitors better!” Wendy McCaughan, owner of Kan Teq, was there throughout the competition and provided vests to competitors to try out. Wendy even took part in some of the contests and won the prize for the SmartPak Most Innovative Hat and received an embroidered vest from Southern 8ths Farm. Wendy took some time after the event to offer her comments noting, “I would like to say how impressed I was by the amazing energy shown by those behind the scenes. They were truly tireless in their mission to gather every ounce of feedback, every sponsor photo opportunity and every moment of action whether on the magnificent cross-country course or in various clinics. “Everything in the indoor arena was so beautifully presented with no detail left to chance. I particularly liked the vast display of prizes. Also the effort given to reinforce every sponsor’s contribution was absolutely brilliant (i.e. the Nikon Photo Contest, the sponsor books, the Sponsor Hat Contest) with each idea cleverly feeding all media and social media requirements! Conditioning for the Long Format By Sarah Baker

The Best Conditioned award at the Heart of Carolinas Three Day Event went to a Warmblood mare – read how she was prepared. I had the wonderful opportunity to take a Warmblood five minute intervals of long and low, allowing her to stretch mare, Poetic Justice, owned by Gail Thayer, to the Heart of through her topline. She could not always hold it, but I the Carolinas Three-Day Event at Southern 8ths Farm in would periodically ask her to stretch through her Chesterfield S.C. May 3-5. I was very concerned for my connection. Every day, I did this as my warm-up and coolhorse, leading up to and during the event, because she does down. As she gained strength, I began to do hill work and not gain or hold fitness very easily. When she came to me in trot sets. Unlike Thoroughbreds that would have done a trot February of this year, the first thing I began to work on was set twice a week, I did a trot set with Poetic Justice every day. making her strong and fit enough to compete. Traditionally, preparation for the long-format three-day event would involve a fitness schedule starting two to three months beforehand. The first month would develop the horse’s ability to maintain the trot for a long period of time. Depending on the starting fitness of the horse, this may involve 10-20 minute trot sets for the first four weeks, increasing to 30-40 minute trot sets in the second month. This is preferably done up hills, as it not only improves the horse’s wind and heart but the concussion on the horse’s joints is reduced when trotting uphill. These trot sets can be broken down into 10 or 15 minute intervals, with a walk break in between, or can be done as the rider trots up a hill and then walks back down it repeatedly. In the last four to six I would use the trot set or the hills as my warm up, weeks, riders begin gallop sets. This is a period of canter at steadily increasing the amount of time she had to be out. By Kelly Daniels Usually at horse trials, Saturday evenings are filled with pulling poultice out of my hair, brushing algae off my galloping boots, and the unavoidable debate: to braid or not to braid for show jumping. But at Longleaf Pine Horse Trials April 20-21, a group of 20 hungry eventers (when are eventers not hungry?) managed to put time aside and gather for the wonderful NCDCTA-hosted show jumping course walk with course designer extraordinaire Marc Donovan. Opening with a discussion of the basics of the show jumping test, Marc reminded us of many subtle advantages the rulebook affords us, a lot of which many of us do not know. The majority of us trot into show jumping, avoid crossing our course lines, and begin as soon as the buzzer sounds. We do this because it’s drilled into our brains as competitors: you’re in, and then you’re out. But, as Marc explained and greatly encouraged, we pay for those 2 minutes in the ring. They are our two minutes. So I can circle around for my entire 45 seconds after the buzzer if I so choose. And while I’m circling, I can let my horse walk about, past, and up to any jump I so choose. Interestingly to me, Marc explained that the “crossing your line” fear all eventers have instilled in them doesn’t actually exist in that 45-second grace period. You can go backwards through the start flags (away from the first fence) or back and forth through the finish flags if you want to. I took that particular piece of Marc’s advice on Sunday in my round, and I’ll admit, I felt like a rebellious rule breaker doing it. But I did not get in trouble for it, and my green but somehow know-it-all thoroughbred was great because he was comfortable in the ring. Life changed. While the discussion of the rulebook was eye-opening, and the actual course

walk was essential to many of our clear rounds the next day, the most revolutionary concept I gained from Marc’s seminar with us was a simple, yet confusing one: he wants competitors to be successful. I know, I was shocked too. When things go wrong, or don’t walk quite right to us, we are very quick to assume the course designer is just trying to ruin our day. And with a couple, maybe that’s true. But excellent Marc begged us to notice and use all the information he provides on his course map to help us, particularly the fact that he includes the line he expects riders to take to each fence. This allows riders to better estimate how the lines they are choosing will effect their time through the course, at the set speed and time allowed that Marc also conveniently provides. He reiterated this kind nature on the course walk when explaining why particular distances are used. Contrary to popular belief, when distances walk short or long, they might not be to trap you. Instead, course designers do this to help you, by adjusting for the factors that affect a horse’s stride. Marc, and other course designers, shorten and lengthen those distances to help compensate for these factors and provide horses and riders with more successful rounds. While the points I’ve reviewed above can make the rider’s job considerably easier, this is not to say that course designers like Marc seek to make easy courses. There is a clear division between challenging but safe and successful, and dangerous. Course designers, Marc especially, provide you with all the tools you need to have a successful (and double clear!) trip. However, they cannot ride the course for you. So as riders, rather than blaming rails on the distances or that one scary-looking jump, we should use all the knowledge at our disposal, plan, and ensure our own success. Randy Boni Carves His Legacy One Tree At A Time Just watching wood carver Randy Boni create his sculptures during the annual SoBths/Nikon Three-Day Event in the "Heart of the Carolinas" lets you know how passionate he is about what he does. Randy will be back once again working on another creation during the event, May 2-5 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Southern Bths Farm is lucky to have Randy's work since much of his preserving of dying or damaged trees can be seen as high profile landmarks around the country. Using mostly a chainsaw, Randy is now protecting nature by providing another resting place for these trees at SoBths. With so much beautiful artwork sprinkled around the country, little do most people know that these landmarks were almost never going to happen . For over 30 years, Randy and his twin brother Rick were blind. "My twin brother and I were born with cataracts. We were legally blind, and could not see well enough to play ball, or fit in well with sport endeavors," he explained. Fortunately, when Randy was in his 30s a successful surgery gave him back his sight and gave the country the opportunity to witness his talent. "I love carving. It helps me love all of life. I do what I love and love what I do," commented Randy. Considered one of the most proficient chainsaw artists in the country, Randy's first SoBths sculpture was a fox and hound hunting scene. That expanded into works of art that grace the 300-acre paradise, which showcases an indoor arena, permanent stalls, RV hookups, a steeplechase field, cross-country course, three-and-a-half miles of roads and tracks, regulation size dressage arena, derby field and colorful show jumps. During the year Randy carves some smaller pieces for the farm but for the annual SoBths/Nikon event he carves one major work of art. In 2010, Randy carved a tree of life totem and in 2011 he did a lion lesson log. This year he will be carving a water scene from a large ash log that cross-country course designer Tremaine Cooper sent from his house in Massachusetts. "Randy Boni is more than a wood carver," commented SoBths owner Brad Turley. "He is a storyteller who conveys his story

It was a sweet Valentine's Day for Cappy Peterson this year as the hunter, jumper and reiner tied the knot on February 16th with Dr. Vernon Dryden, an equine podiatrist from Rood & Riddle Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Cappy's son Cole matched the groom and the bride looked beautiful.

James Lala has expanded services at his Wellington Quarantine. He's back in the saddle training and showing. James rode and trained Carento, owned by Sherri Crawford , and Carento was champion in the First Year Greens with Louise Serio during Week 8 at FTI WEF. James has also been riding and showing for Jill Knowles and earned a win on Lisa Greenspon's Cesares in the Baby Green Hunters also during Week 8.

The Sponsors Say Thank You to the Amateurs with their many Prizes The list of sponsors continued with Adequan, Bit of Britain, Brant Gamma, Breyer, CelebrityCafe.com, Cosequin, Dressage Collection, Ecolicious, FITS, Foxden Equine, Higher Standards Saddle Soap, Horse Quencher, The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program, Kan Teq, Mane Street Horse and Pet, Mrs Pastures Cookies, SciencePure/Pureform, Smartpak, Southern 8ths Farm, and USEA. Every sponsor donated products that made this event extra special for the amateurs who competed. Both Adequan and Cosequin provided buckets that went to the competitors and were used in the veterinary box and other locations throughout the weekend. Cosequin also presented a bucket of prizes to the second place recipients. The 2nd place winners included James Baker, Southern Pines, NC, and Wings in T3D, Samantha DiMaria, Kendall Park, NJ, and Valentine for N3D and Catie Pannill, Martinsville, VA, and Kokoa Kat for BN3D. The Jockey Club Low Score Thoroughbred Incentive award of a ribbon, $50 cash prize and embroidered Jockey Club duffle bag also was won by DiMaria.

James was also the recipient of the Foxden Goodwill Ambassador Award for his leadership throughout the weekend. Baker noted that the support of the sponsors at the So8ths/Nikon HOTC event has a much deeper meaning because for once the pomp and ceremony was not being focused on the top level, but rather on those who also deserve it. Baker’s words were echoed by many when he said, “It makes a great deal of difference to me that these sponsors will recognize and support us at the lower levels. Too often only the top level gets any recognition yet it is the lower levels that provide the financial support through their membership, through day to day products and entry fees.”

What's Happenin' | So8ths In addition James won the highly sought after Bit of Britain Adult Rider Low Score grooming tote with brushes, a Bit of Britain bridle and a gift certificate all valued at just over $500. After the event Jim expressed his gratitude to Bit of Britain owner and Eventer, John Nunn, noting, “Thank you for your support and the quality of your products, but you should be here. This is the premier Training Three-Day that knocks the socks off of other T3Ds. You need to ride this event.” Brant Gamma was the official show photographer. She provided the winner of each division with an 8×10 picture frame to include a photo of their choice. One of the winners, Viele commented, “This weekend has been a long-term goal and your photos will help me relive the great moments and share them with friends.”

“I’d like to thank Brant Gamma for her support and helmet cams coverage as well as John Nunn at Bit of Britain for all he does for Southern 8ths and the adult riders,” remarked Turley. Breyer donated a couple of model horses to the young volunteers in the group while CelebrityCafe.com provided a gift basket to volunteer Carolyn Sellers. Higher Standards Saddle Soap jars were given to the top three finishers in each division. FITS provided shirts that were added to the Horse Quencher Sportsmanship award won by Taylor Pence, Concord, NC, who was competing on Goldie. Everyone received some Mrs Pastures Cookies and there were lots of happy horses being fed those cookies throughout the competition. SmartPak provided each competitor with a paste supplement and all the Officials received a SmartPak tote. Cosequin gave them all vet wraps and coupons. Both Foxden and SciencePure provided gift certificates to many of the competitors. As a way to help thank the sponsors, notebooks were put out on a table throughout the competition so that anyone could write a note to the sponsors. Taylor wrote to Horse Quencher, “I won many of your products this weekend and cannot wait to try them. Thank you so much for contributing to such a wonderful event.”

The Dressage Collection Low Dressage Score prize of a beautiful Classic Handbag will probably end up with the trainer, Suzanne Lacy of Riverbend Farm, since she brought a bunch of riders to compete at this year’s event. Sarah Zimmer, Martinsville, VA, had the lowest dressage score of 30.70. The Ecolicious Best Turned Out award of their all natural shampoo and conditioner went to Pannill, Baker and Manny Diemer, Raeford, NC, who placed 4th on Krugerrand in N3D. Ecolicious products were also given out to a number of the other competitors who placed at the top. Additionally Ecolicious owner Petra McGowan was thinking out of the box and offered a donation of all of their products to one lucky recipient who would use them and document their use. That recipient was Erin Hite, Durham, NC, who commented, “I won the raffle and used your products over the weekend. They smell great and work. I love that they are natural. Cody and I worked a year to get here and really appreciate your support at our own miniRolex!” The Mane Street Best Conditioned Horse Award and the Kan Teq Closest Lady to Optimum XC Time was won by Sarah Baker, Southern Pines, NC, who rode Poetic Justice to a 4th place finish in T3D. Sarah was thrilled with her gift basket filled with cool horse items and an embroidered cooler from Mane Street as well as a Safety Vest from Kan Teq. “This is an amazing event,” commented Sarah. “Nobody treats the competitors better!” Wendy McCaughan, owner of Kan Teq, was there throughout the competition and provided vests to competitors to try out. Wendy even took part in some of the contests and won the prize for the SmartPak Most Innovative Hat and received an embroidered vest from Southern 8ths Farm.

Wendy McCaughan, owner of Kan Teq, was there throughout the competition and provided vests to competitors to try out. Wendy even took part in some of the contests and won the prize for the SmartPak Most Innovative Hat and received an embroidered vest from Southern 8ths Farm. Wendy took some time after the event to offer her comments noting, “I would like to say how impressed I was by the amazing energy shown by those behind the scenes. They were truly tireless in their mission to gather every ounce of feedback, every sponsor photo opportunity and every moment of action whether on the magnificent cross-country course or in various clinics. “Everything in the indoor arena was so beautifully presented with no detail left to chance. I particularly liked the vast display of prizes. Also the effort given to reinforce every sponsor’s contribution was absolutely brilliant (i.e. the Nikon Photo Contest, the sponsor books, the Sponsor Hat Contest) with each idea cleverly feeding all media and social media requirements! Clearly the pre event organization and the commitment of a loyal and quality team helped make this the slick, professional event that it turned out to be.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for Kan Teq and I am so pleased to have had the time to meet riders, trainers, grooms and the wonderful organizing team. It is so valuable to me to be able to explain, fit and let the riders take and try out our innovative vest with no time pressure. Plus the relaxed evening activities made for the easy striking up of new friendships and because of that my social network just got a whole lot wider! My thanks to everyone who not only gave me the opportunity to become a sponsor of this event but who helped me maximize my sponsorship.” USEA also supported the event through their USEA Classic Series sponsor package. A Final Heartfelt Thank You Of special note was all the support given by Southern 8ths Farm owner Brad Turley and his girlfriend Pati Martin. They provided t-shirts to all the volunteers, fans to the competitors and gifts to the clinicians and officials. Both Brad and Pati were extremely heartened by the sponsorship support. The Long Format is something Brad truly believes in and recognizing the amateur competitors has always been his personal goal. “I was truly overwhelmed by the sponsorship we received for our amateur level competition. These competitors are the ones who deserve to be recognized. All of us at Southern 8ths Farm, from the staff and volunteers to the officials and clinicians and especially the competitors were and still are extremely appreciative of the support given by 21 wellknown equine companies. We are all touched that these companies were willing to show their support to a host of riders who represent the foundation of the sport of Eventing. I personally want to say thank you to each and every sponsor that made this year’s So8ths/Nikon HOTC Three-Day such a success,” Brad commented.

Finally, it was Viele who echoed many of the words spoken by the competitors when she wrote this note to Brad and Pati: “You have built an amazing facility here; well thought out, outstanding footing for Dressage, beautiful tracks and grassy gallops, and challenging, interesting cross-country courses. I can’t imagine the countless hours and generous financial support it has taken for you to put this three-day on. But you have made this adult amateur’s dream come true. “It’s been many years that I wanted to compete in a Long Format and finally doing it I’ve found the experience has exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned things about competing, about myself, about stable management. But most importantly I’ve been reminded about what a wonderful, enthusiastic and supportive community eventers are; from the staff, clinicians and volunteers, to my own friends and coach. south. Lynn Symansky, US Equestrian Team Member, has written a great article about Cross Country Courses. I am sure you will enjoy learning what cross-country is and how riders prepare for this difficult and strenuous sport. Dr. Rebecca Gimenez reminds us of the dangers of using ropes around a horse. This informative article reviews rope safety and the consequences for ignoring it. Our vet article for April discusses gastric ulcers in horses with possible causes and treatments. Foals are such an amazing and remarkable gift coming into the world and learning to walk in just minutes after their birth. Dan James of Double Dan Horsemanship shares eight things you can do with your foal now. The North Carolina Horse Council is hosting its annual Cowboy Up event in Lumberton, NC at the Southeastern Agriculture and Event Center. This annual event is a fund raiser to build permanent stalls at the facility. This year’s activities will include the first “Hot Heels Roping” event on Friday night. This event will give folks who have always wanted to try their hand at roping, but didn’t have access to a real cow a chance. The “hot heels” machine is pulled by a four-wheeler around the arena and can be used for single ropers, headers, heelers or a team roping. Saturday will feature Barrel Racing, Ranch Sorting and Extreme Trail Horse Challenge. Sunday will round out the event with Kid’s Day in

which we host a special needs kids’ rodeo and as well as a kids’ rodeo for kids without horses. In these two events everyone is a winner. North Carolina based Equine attorney, Dottie Burch explains more about knowing your trainer in Part 2 of “Do You Really, Really KNOW Your Trainer?” Our next issue will discuss 10 Must haves for your trail ride, Therapeutic Riding, Impulsion and more. So8ths/Nikon Event is in the “Heart of the Carolinas”

f ever there was a place that shouts, “Long Live the Long Format,” Southern 8ths Farm is that place. On May 2-5 this 300acre pristine facility will host the third annual So8ths/Nikon Three-Day Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas.” This event, which takes place in Chesterfield, S.C., is the amateur rider’s “Rolex”. It’s the event where beginner novice, novice and training level riders can negotiate their ultimate long format test in a USEA recognized T3D, N3D and BN3D event. And what makes this event even more unique is that it is the only three-day event that offers a beginner-novice division. The long format is the traditional version of the sport, which dates back to the early 20th century and was first introduced in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. While it changed slightly over the years, in 2004 the Olympics changed the sport to the short format by eliminating the longer roads and tracks and the steeplechase parts of the test, thereby reducing the amount of area required to host the sport. “We started the event to share the long format experience with others. We were told lower level riders couldn’t or shouldn’t ride a long format. Over the past three years we’ve found they can and they

have benefited from the experience. With the help of the professional riders and the support of the USEA, the Heart of the Carolinas has become the winter’s end destination to prepare for a successful summer season,” commented Southern 8ths Farm owner, Brad Turley. “The Nikon Three-Day event is the highlight of our season,” remarked Briana Timmerman, Blythewood, SC. “This will be our third year competing. Besides being made to feel like a pro rider with all the support and educational mini-clinics from famous international riders, it's also the truest test of our training. The dressage tests are just one notch higher (and in a 20’ x 60’ arena), the roads and tracks means we really have to be fit, and the steeplechase, besides being one of the most fun things I've ever done, really tests our ability to rate our pace. I'm planning on sending in my entry the second it opens up. I don't want to miss getting a spot!" In addition to the three days of competition, the day before the event begins some of the top riders and trainers donate their time to help educate the competitors. This year’s list includes Pan American Games veteran Holly Hudspeth and Lauren O’Brian; Susan Beebee, an upper level competitor; J. Michael (Charlie) Plumb, winner of the 1990

Fair Hill CCI**; Olympic veteran Robert Costello; Pan American Games Gold Medalist and Olympic alternate Will Faudree; Show Jumping Course Designer Marc Donovan; Dressage Judge Sue Smithson; FEI Eventing Veterinarian Dr. Debbie Williamson; and FEI “I” Cross-Country Course Designer Tremaine Cooper. Like Briana, this will be the third year that James Baker, Raleigh, N.C., competes. “Southern 8ths’ emphasis on safety for horse and rider shows and because of the prime location it draws some of the top rated clinicians. It is amazing for a lower level eventer to not only learn from these experts but to have two Olympians helping ice his horse in the 10 minute box, out of sheer generosity.” In addition to the facilities Southern 8ths has an indoor arena, permanent stalls and RV hookups. “Having permanent stalls makes it an amazing experience for the horses since at many of the other events the horses are in tents and instead of the wash stalls that Southern 8ths provides we often are hosing our www.equinemonthly.com

horses outside in muddy conditions. While the competition is first rate, the hosts emphasize the importance of also having fun, and an overall happy atmosphere makes this event thoroughly enjoyable,” he concluded. Preparing for this event is a yearround job that keeps a host of people busy behind the scenes. “This event takes year-round planning and includes painting some 100 jumps, organizing signage, ordering supplies, and manicuring acres of competition tracks and fields for just this weekend,” explained Brad’s girlfriend Pati Martin. “During the four months before the event, the gears rev to a frightening speed; hiring officials, securing overnight accommodations, cleaning and outfitting the stables, searching for more than 100 volunteers, and ordering ribbons. “These and more horse show details are combined with planning for a fun Saturday night party and all that goes with that (catering, decorations, tents, entertainment, etc.). All the work begs the question Why? Answer…because ‘anything worth doing is worth doing well.’ The return of friends and new friendships formed each year, and the memories of the competitor’s smiling faces from the adrenaline and satisfaction of a goal finally accomplished make this worth doing.” Volunteer Erin Kimmer, Locust, N.C., gave the event the ultimate compliment. “This event is a step above the rest. Amateur Competitors Applaud the Sponsors for their Support The competitors in the third annual So8ths/Nikon Three-Day Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas” were not just overwhelmed by how wonderful the event was but also by the generosity of its sponsors. The event took place May 2-5 in Chesterfield, SC. Amateur riders competing in Beginner Novice, Novice, and Training levels went home not only with a sense of accomplishment and accolades about an event well-run and facilities that are beyond comparison but also with a bounty of gifts.. A huge thank you went to the title sponsor NIKON who presented the winners of the three divisions with a Nikon D3200 Camera Kit (with an 1855mm VR lens). Kathy Viele, Aiken, SC, rode Matariki to the victory in Training (T3D), Sarah Zimmer, Martinsville, VA, and Mardi Gras were the Novice (N3D) winners and Sara Miles, Assawoman, VA, and Misty’s RainDrop were the Beginner Novice (BN3D) winners.

The competitors weren’t the only ones going home with NIKON products. Gay Glenn was the volunteer who was the lucky recipient of a NIKON Coolpix S5200 Camera after her name was drawn out of the Most Valuable Volunteer’s bucket. Everyone was a winner, thanks to the sponsors at this year’s event because every Competitor, Clinician and Official went home with a souvenir NIKON item ranging from laptop bags, to flexible keyboards, t-shirts, mood lights, luggage tags, umbrellas and so much more. The title sponsor NIKON was extremely generous with their support of this event because they recognize the value of the amateur riders. “We here at NIKON are proud to be involved with Southern 8ths Farm’s recognized three-day event to support the amateur riders and their passion for Eventing. It is this same passion that drives NIKON each day. We look forward to a long relationship with So8ths!” remarked Bill Pekala, General Manager, NIKON Pro Services. “Our sponsors have helped make the Southern 8ths Three-Day a destination for the amateur riders,” remarked Southern 8ths Farm owner Brad Turley. “NIKON’s support has been fabulous. Besides providing the winners with high quality cameras, they added in a camera for volunteers, provided a dozen cameras for the competitors to take part in a photo contest and then sent many extra items that impressed everyone.” The Sponsors Say Thank You to the Amateurs with their many Prizes The list of sponsors continued with Adequan, Bit of Britain, Brant Gamma, Breyer, CelebrityCafe.com, Cosequin, Dressage Collection, Ecolicious, FITS, Foxden Equine, Higher Standards Saddle Soap, Horse Quencher, The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program, Kan Teq, Mane Street Horse and Pet, Mrs Pastures Cookies, SciencePure/Pureform, Smartpak, Southern 8ths Farm, and USEA. Every sponsor donated products that made this event extra special for the amateurs who competed. Both Adequan and Cosequin provided buckets that went to the competitors and were used in the veterinary box and other locations throughout the weekend. Brant Gamma was the official show photographer. She provided the winner of each division with an 8×10 picture frame to include a photo of their choice. One of the winners, Viele commented, “This weekend has been a long-term goal and your photos will help me relive the great moments and share them with friends.” “I’d like to thank Brant Gamma for her support and helmet cams coverage as well as John Nunn at Bit of Britain for all he does for Southern 8ths and the adult riders,” remarked Turley. Breyer donated a couple of model horses to the young volunteers in the group while CelebrityCafe.com provided a gift basket to volunteer Carolyn Sellers. Higher Standards Saddle Soap jars were given to the top three finishers in each division. FITS provided shirts that were added to the Horse Quencher Sportsmanship award won by Taylor Pence, Concord, NC, who was competing on Goldie. Everyone received some Mrs Pastures Cookies and there were lots of happy horses being fed those cookies throughout the competition. SmartPak provided each competitor with a paste supplement and all the Officials received a SmartPak tote. Cosequin gave them all vet wraps and coupons. Both Foxden and SciencePure provided gift certificates to many of the competitors. As a way to help thank the sponsors, notebooks were put out on a table throughout the competition so that anyone could write a note to the sponsors. Taylor wrote to Horse Quencher, “I won many of your products this weekend and cannot wait to try them. Thank you so much for contributing to such a wonderful event.” The Dressage Collection Low Dressage Score prize of a beautiful Classic Handbag will probably end up with the trainer, Suzanne Lacy of Riverbend Farm, since she brought a bunch of riders to compete at this year’s event. Sarah Zimmer, Martinsville, VA, had the lowest dressage score of 30.70.

The Ecolicious Best Turned Out award of their all natural shampoo and conditioner went to Pannill, Baker and Manny Diemer, Raeford, NC, who placed 4 th on Krugerrand in N3D. Ecolicious products were also given out to a number of the other competitors who placed at the top. Additionally Ecolicious owner Petra McGowan was thinking out of the box and offered a donation of all of their products to one lucky recipient who would use them and document their use. That recipient was Erin Hite, Durham, NC, who commented, “I won the raffle and used your products over the weekend. They smell great and work. I love that they are natural. Cody and I worked a year to get here and really appreciate your support at our own mini-Rolex!” The Mane Street Best Conditioned Horse Award and the Kan Teq Closest Lady to Optimum X-C Time was won by Sarah Baker, Southern Pines, NC, who rode Poetic Justice to a 4 th place finish in T3D. Sarah was thrilled with her gift basket filled with cool horse items and an embroidered cooler from Mane Street as well as a Safety Vest from Kan Teq. “This is an amazing event,” commented Sarah. “Nobody treats the competitors better!” Wendy McCaughan, owner of Kan Teq, was there throughout the competition and provided vests to competitors to try out. Wendy even took part in some of the contests and won the prize for the SmartPak Most Innovative Hat and received an embroidered vest from Southern 8ths Farm.
