Washington International Signs Three-Year Contract With Verizon Center By: Mollie Bailey

On March 15 the Washington (D.C.) International Horse Show announced that they signed a contract with Verizon Center to extend its run there for the next three years. The show will remain at that venue

through 2013. Show management had been renewing their agreement with the venue annually for several years. The Washington D.C. National Guard Armory originally hosted the Washington International when it was founded in 1958. In 1975 the show moved to the U.S. Air Arena in Landover, Md. The Verizon Center has hosted the event since 2000, and the 53 rd edition will take place Oct. 25-30. Located in the Chinatown district of downtown D.C., Verizon Center is also home to three professional sports teams and one college team. “We are thrilled to remain at Verizon Center and continue this great Washington tradition,” said Anthony Hitchcock, Chief Operating Officer of the Washington International. “Verizon Center has been home to the Washington International for 12 years, and while there are complexities in producing an urban horse show with shipping horses in and out of the city and closing city streets to create stables, it also makes us one of the most exciting horse shows in the country.” As part of the fall indoor circuit, the Washington International attracts the nation’s premier hunters and also hosts the President’s Cup CSI-W and the Washington International Equitation Classic Final. “It’s taken us a couple years to assess the desire and wants of the horse show community and to weigh the inconveniences of the venue with the prestige of this building and location in the nation’s capital,” said Washington International president Juliet Reid. “Because of what we’ve learned, we’re happy to have negotiated and secured Verizon Center for the next three years. We recognize the importance of being a world-class horse show in a major metropolitan city. While the trend in equestrian sport is for multi-week, multi-ring shows, we have a special place in the sport by showcasing the very best.”

There were always rumors that the show would not be able to survive because of the high cost of putting it on in an urban area at a major arena. The agreement should silence the naysayers. And despite the inconveniences involved, such as stabling on the street, exhibitors continue to make the show a goal because it enjoys a special cachet from being in the nation's capital. "It is our goal to continue to ensure Washington is a `must-attend' event for the equestrian world and the Washington D.C. community," said Juliet Reid, the show's president. Eric Straus, who was the show's CEO, left in an amicable parting after he was unable to sell his home in Connecticut. Washington D.C. resident Bridget Love Meehan, who most recently was a senior marketing executive at Discovery Communications, will start this week as executive director. "One of the things I want to focus on is getting a whole new generation of young riders interested in the show," said Meehan. "This is one of the few shows you can look to as a goal. We need to continue making the show as unique and special as we can and making it a real destination." Noting Meehan has been involved with the show as an exhibitor and member of the marketing and communications committee, Reid said, "Bridget brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the areas of marketing and sponsorship and she has a strong background and understanding of the requirements needed to produce a world class event." ###

Washington, D.C., March 16, 2011--The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), the leading indoor championship horse show in the country, is pleased to announce a three-year deal with Verizon Center to extend its run at the Washington, D.C. venue through 2013. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS since 2000. The 53rd annual Washington International Horse Show will take place October 25-30. “We are thrilled to remain at Verizon Center and continue this great Washington tradition. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS for 12 years, and while there are complexities in producing an urban horse show with shipping horses in and out of the city and closing city streets to create stables, it also makes us one of the most exciting horse shows in the country,” said Anthony F. Hitchcock, chief operating officer of WIHS. “The Washington International Horse show has been a prominent, annual event for the arena,” said David Touhey, senior vice president and general manager of Verizon Center. “We’re excited to be able to extend our relationship for another three years and continue to provide the community with another fun and entertaining family show that features world-class equestrian competition.” Verizon Center is located in the popular Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., close to museums and restaurants and within walking distance of the National Mall.
