Welcome to Aperture 2017 What defines an Aperture book? First, everyone involved in making books at Aperture is driven by a passion for photography. It’s in our blood! We’re intensely engaged with the history and evolution of the photobook, as a work of art in its own right, which serves as the ultimate vehicle for a photographer’s series or idea. Each editor, as she or he proposes a particular book, must convince the team that they are compelled to do it, that its existence will improve the world, that it really matters! We publish books that other publishers won’t or can’t—from complex artists’ books to emerging photographers’ first books—and serve a story and a community that other publishers don’t. Such titles typically don’t make financial sense for commercial publishers, but as a not-for-profit, our work is to find a way to make these books real, and at the highest quality possible, raising funds for them as necessary. By publishing them, we take our audiences to new places, and introduce them to new work. These books also change the featured photographers’ lives, raising their reputations to new levels. And then there’s the magazine, which is unlike any other, delivering the best writing about photography and ideas, alongside spectacular production. Each season, the magazine delves into a pressing topic in photography, often where the medium is having a profound impact within our society and culture. Aperture magazine is also the source of so many new relationships for us. We are now working on four books that stem from the recent issue Vision & Justice, guest edited by Sarah Lewis, about photography and the African American experience. From the first serious survey of the photography of food (why hasn’t anyone done it before?), to the vivid black dandy in photography, to the unique biography of eco-warrior-adventurerphotographer Michael Nichols, not to mention new books by Stephen Shore, Rinko Kawauchi, and Dawoud Bey, among others, we sincerely hope this spring’s list inspires you! —Chris Boot, Executive Director

Made in America
This issue reflects on the image of American manufacturing, from the automobile as a symbol of the rise and fall of domestic industry, to how the worker, as subject, has fascinated photographers from Lewis Hine to Lee Friedlander. A series of portfolios by contemporary photographers portray daily life in regional communities, such as Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and other Rust Belt cities. As debates continue about the country’s economic future and the outsourcing of jobs, this issue offers an urgent reflection on photography, economy, and American life.

Text by Henri Cartier-Bresson Interviews by various contributors

Presented for the first time in English, this volume brings together twelve notable interviews and conversations with Henri CartierBresson carried out between 1951 and 1998. While many of us are acquainted with his images, there are so few texts available by Cartier-Bresson on his photographic process. These verbal, primary accounts capture the spirit of the master photographer and serve as a lasting document of his life and work, which has inspired generations of photographers and artists. Henri Cartier-Bresson began his career in photography in 1930. A pioneer of the documentary photography genre, he was one of the founders, along with Robert Capa, of the photography agency Magnum. He is considered one of the major artists of the twentieth century, and his work has appeared in hundreds of publications, museums, and galleries worldwide.

Valparaíso began in 1957 while Sergio Larrain was traveling with poet Pablo Neruda for Du magazine. When the photographs were first published in 1991, Larrain informed the publishers that he had made his own facsimile of the book, reflecting how he would have constructed the layout. This facsimile is now beautifully produced in book form. Including text by the celebrated Pablo Neruda as well as correspondence between Larrain and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Valparaíso presents the long-awaited return of this rare and renowned body of work. Sergio Larrain studied at the University of California, Berkeley. Upon his return to Chile he began taking photographs in the streets of Santiago and Valparaíso. He became a Magnum photographer in 1960, around the time when he also began what would become a legendary project on Valparaíso with a text by poet Pablo Neruda. Agnès Sire has served as the director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris since its creation in 2003, where

• Extensive survey of modernist photography through one of the world’s greatest collections, now in paperback edition • Coincides with major exhibition at Tate Modern • Exclusive interview with Sir Elton John
Sir Elton John, musician and philanthropist, has built one of the greatest private collections of photography in the world. This book presents an unparalleled selection of modernist images, which introduce a crucial moment in the history of photography when artists were beginning to use the camera and darkroom to redefine and transform visions of the modern world. Technological advancements gave artists the freedom to experiment and test the limits of the medium, enabling new imaginings of portraits, nudes, and still lifes; and street life and the modern world were captured from a new, uniquely modern perspective. Simon Baker is the senior curator of photography and international art at Tate Modern, London. Shoair Mavlian is an assistant curator at Tate Modern focusing primarily on photography. [ 27 ]
