Across Aperture’s programs, we set out to attract recruits to the story of photography with projects that engage, educate, and excite audiences at different stages of their journeys with the medium. This season, that includes new editions of beloved classics by Don McCullin, Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, and Sebastião Salgado; books that mine photography from unexpected angles (say hello to Walter Chandoha, the now-ninety-four-year-old cat photographer); and valuable additions to the history of photography, such as a major survey of Hiroji Kubota’s illustrious career, the first posthumous book by queer art legend Jimmy DeSana, and a new Masters of Photography title featuring Walker Evans. There are thrilling books of fresh work by Doug DuBois, Paolo Pellegrin, and Alex Majoli, and—launching our partnership with Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco— the latest chapter in Magnum’s Postcards from America project, as well as an exceptional and dramatic album of Richard Learoyd’s studio photographs. We are also extremely proud to inaugurate our alliance with the Hermès Foundation this season, with the exhibition of Kolkata/Calcutta, new work by Patrick Faigenbaum (first presented at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris earlier this year). Educational ambitions underlie all our work, but some books set out to educate above all, such as the summary of the amazing Question Bridge project, about black male identity in America; Self Publish, Be Happy’s DIY manual to photobookmaking; and Charlotte Cotton’s visual thesis on the new generation of postrepresentational photographers. The title for Cotton’s book is our catchphrase for the season: Photography Is Magic! —Chris Boot, executive director

A meditation on coastal light in Cape Cod, with popular appeal
Cape Light
Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz Interview by Bruce K. MacDonald
Cape Light, Joel Meyerowitz’s series of serene and contemplative color photographs taken on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is one of the most influential and popular photography books of the latter part of the twentieth century. It broke new ground both for color photography and for the medium’s acceptance into the art world. Now, over thirty-five years later, Aperture is pleased to bring back this classic collection in its original form. The book features all the now-iconic images of the original edition, newly remastered and printed as never before. Meyerowitz is a contemporary master of color photography, and through his eyes small-town life on the Cape is imbued once more with a powerful and captivating beauty.

Richard Learoyd: Day for Night
Photographs and artist statement by Richard Learoyd
Texts by Martin Barnes and Nancy Gryspeerdt This deluxe, oversized monograph offers a unique and comprehensive collection of Richard Learoyd’s color studio images to date—mostly portraits, but also including exquisite still lifes. The color images are made with one of the most antiquarian of photographic processes: the camera obscura, literally translated from Latin as “dark room.” Learoyd has created a room-sized camera in which the Ilfochrome photographic paper is exposed. The subject is in the adjacent room; a lens connects the two. Light falling on the subject is directly focused onto the photographic paper without an interposing film negative. The result is an entirely grainless image. These larger-than-life images redefine the photographic illusion. Learoyd’s subjects, composed simply and directly, are described with the thinnest plane of focus, recreating and exaggerating the way that the human eye perceives. Compelling story of a thirty-year photographic relationship between Mark and her subject, Tiny
Tiny: Streetwise Revisited Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark
Texts by Isabel Allende, John Irving, and Mary Ellen Mark Excerpts from the films Streetwise and Tiny, by Martin Bell In 1988, Mary Ellen Mark first published her poignant document of a fiercely independent group of homeless and troubled youth who made their way on the streets of Seattle as pimps, prostitutes, panhandlers, and small-time drug dealers. Streetwise received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of her subjects and introduced us to individuals who were not easily forgotten, including “Tiny” (Erin Blackwell)—a thirteen-year-old prostitute with dreams of a horse farm, diamonds and furs, and a baby of her own. Since meeting Tiny thirty years ago, Mark has continued to photograph her, creating what has become one of Mark’s most significant and long-term projects. Now forty-three, Tiny has ten children and her life has unfolded in unexpected ways, which together speak to poverty, class, race, addiction, and other ongoing and pressing issues. Tiny: Streetwise Revisited provides a powerful education about one of the more complex sides of American life, as well as insight into the unique relationship sustained between artist and subject for over thirty years.

With a career spanning over fifty years, Magnum photographer Hiroji Kubota has spent his life traveling extensively and documenting the world around him. From his coverage of the Black Panther Party in the mid-1960s to his incomparable access to North Korea, Kubota has prolifically captured the histories of diverse cultures throughout the world. This sumptuous visual biography encompasses the best images of his life’s work, broken down into chapters with narrative, illuminating texts throughout. Rooted in his experience of Japan, ravaged by destruction and famine at the end of World War II, Kubota’s work is characterized by a desire to find beauty and honor in human experience. The book includes all his key bodies of work, including his many extended trips to China, Burma, the U.S., North and South Korea, and his home country, Japan.

A book that captures the spirit of the Americas, offering an unusual and unmatched perspective
Other Americas
Photographs by Sebastião Salgado
Texts by Claude Nori, Sebastião Salgado, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, and Alan Riding Other Americas, originally published in France in 1986 and designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado, is Sebastião Salgado’s first book. With forty-nine black-andwhite photographs taken between 1977 and 1984, Salgado’s distilled survey of a continent includes images from Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico. The images range in subject, capturing spiritual and religious practices, changing rural landscapes, and intimate domestic life. Each photograph shares a sense of sincere connection—connection between the subject and the photographer, between a population and their homeland, and between Salgado and the audience he seeks to engage. In his text, Alan Riding writes, “Salgado has sought out a lost corner of the Americas and he has made it a prism through which the entire continent can be viewed. A philosophy of life is caught in a look; an entire way of life is frozen in a moment . . .”

Features black American men in a conversation about the critical issues of today
∞
An effective tool to stimulate candid dialogue about race and gender identities in America, particularly in classrooms

Question Bridge has excited a broad audience in installations at museums throughout the U.S.
Question Bridge: Black Males in America Edited by Deborah Willis and Natasha L. Logan Introduction by Ambassador Andrew Young Preface by Jesse Williams Additional text by Chris Johnson, Delroy Lindo, Bayeté Ross Smith, Rashid Shabazz, Kamal Sinclair, and Hank Willis Thomas From the award-winning video installation of the same name, Question Bridge assembles a series of questions posed to black men, by and for other black men, along with the corresponding responses and portraits of the participants. While the ostensible subject is black men, the conversation that evolves in these pages is ultimately about the nature of living in a post-Obama, post-Ferguson, post–Voting Rights Act America. Question Bridge is about who we are and what we mean to one another. Most critically, it asks: how can we start to dismantle the myths and misconceptions that have evolved around race and gender in America—and how can we reset the narrative about ourselves?

Photography Is Magic draws together current ideas about the use of photography as an invaluable component of the contemporary art world. Edited and with an essay by Charlotte Cotton, this critical publication surveys over eighty artists, all of whom are engaged with experimental ideas concerning photographic practice, as the contemporary landscape is currently being reshaped through digital techniques. We are shown the scope of photographic possibilities in the context of the contemporary creative process. From Michele Abeles and Walead Beshty to Artie Vierkant and Matt Lipps, Cotton has selected artists who are consciously reframing photographic practices using mixed media, appropriation, and a recalibration of analog processes. Photography Is Magic provides the reader with an engaging physical experience and is designed for younger photo aficionados, students, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of contemporary photography.

Photobook meets graphic novel in this innovative mix of forms
My Last Day at Seventeen Photographs by Doug DuBois Illustrations by Patrick Lynch Doug DuBois was first introduced to a group of teenagers from the Russell Heights housing estate while he was an artist-in-residence at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, on the southwest coast of Ireland. He was fascinated by the insular neighborhood, in which “everyone seems to be someone’s cousin, former girlfriend, or spouse. Little can happen there that isn’t seen, discussed, distorted beyond all reason, and fiercely defended against any disapprobation from the outside.” DuBois gained entry when Kevin and Erin (two participants of a workshop he taught) took him to a local hangout spot, opening his eyes to a world of not-quite-adults struggling—publicly and privately—through the last days of their childhood. Over the course of five years, DuBois returned to Russell Heights. People came and left, relationships formed and dissolved, and babies were born. Combining portraits, spontaneous encounters, and collaborative performances, the images in My Last Day at Seventeen exist in a delicate balance between documentary and fiction.

A do-it-yourself guide to the self-publishing revolution

Richly illustrated, full of personal stories and practical advice for all photobook-makers
∞∞
Created by the guru of Self Publish, Be Happy, Bruno Ceschel
Self Publish, Be Happy: A DIY Photobook Manual and Manifesto By Bruno Ceschel An economic and cultural revolution has shaken the photobook world in the last five years: self-publishing. An army of photographers operating as publishers have had an instrumental role in today’s photobook renaissance. This book offers a do-it-yourself manual and a survey of key examples of self-published success stories, as well as a self-publishing manifesto. The survey offers an overview of the contemporary self-publishing landscape and the case studies themselves will each illustrate a particular theme and genre of self-publishing (such as diary, documentary, or conceptual object). Each will be accompanied by tips and testimonies from the artists who created them. Author Bruno Ceschel, founder of the Self Publish, Be Happy organization, provides a rallying cry for all those involved in the contemporary photobook revolution—a moment in which the photobook, in all its infinitesimal manifestations, has never before been so omnipresent in our cultural landscape, nor so critical to the photographer’s practice.

His photographs of cats in particular have appeared in the pages of National Geographic and Life magazine, as well as been absorbed into the public subconscious via posters, pet-food packaging, T-shirts, and other uses. The Internet is awash with cat pictures, and Chandoha’s cat pictures might be seen as the forefather of them all. Jimmy DeSana: Suburban Photographs by Jimmy DeSana
Edited by Dan Nadel and Laurie Simmons Essay by Elisabeth Sussman Memoir by Laurie Simmons This surreally lyrical, sexually charged book collects Jimmy DeSana’s earlier work, made from the late 1970s through 1980s. For his series Suburban, DeSana staged photos of nude subjects in various evocative poses, entwined with everyday objects and lit with gel-covered tungsten lights. Of this series, DeSana told Laurie Simmons, his contemporary and longtime roommate, “I don’t really think of that work as erotic. I think of the body almost as an object . . . I think I de-eroticized a lot of it. Particularly in that period, but that is the way the suburbs are in a sense.” Interest in DeSana is at a renewed high: Salon 94 represents his estate and mounted a well-received exhibition in 2012, and art and photography from the early 1980s are enjoying a renaissance across all media. There is a special interest now in queer artists and the legacy of a generation destroyed by AIDS, with regard to contemporary photography and queer culture. Jimmy DeSana: Suburban is an essential contribution to this evolving canon.

Walker Evans
Photographs by Walker Evans Introduction and commentary by David Campany
Walker Evans helped define documentary photography and is considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. He captured the American experience from the late 1920s to the early 1970s with graceful articulation. From 1935 to 1937, he captured rural America during the Great Depression while working for the Farm Security Administration. His enduring appreciation for inanimate objects and the vernacular as subject matter is evident in his photographs of shop windows, rural churches, billboards, architecture, and displays of American culture as he saw it. Included in this publication is a new, insightful text by historian David Campany, presenting this definitive work to new audiences. Other books in the series include: – Berenice Abbott – Henri Cartier-Bresson – Dorothea Lange – Paul Strand For more information, see p. 46.

A Postcards from America Project Photographs by Chien-Chi Chang, Jim Goldberg, Bruce Gilden, Susan Meiselas, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alec Soth, Larry Towell, Alex Webb, and Donovan Wylie Texts by Cornelius Eady, Marie Howe, Chris Klatell, Nathan Lyons, and Laura Wexler In 2012, the Eastman Kodak Company declared bankruptcy. That same year, a group of photographers from Magnum Photos—Jim Goldberg, Bruce Gilden, Susan Meiselas, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alec Soth, Larry Towell, Alex Webb, and Donovan Wylie, plus Chien-Chi Chang, who documented the process in audio and video—established a temporary base of operations in Rochester, New York, former home to the once-dominant manufacturer of photographic film. Their goal: to create a documentary archive of that city’s culture, landscape, and photographic institutions, and to investigate a community of picture-makers. Over the course of almost three weeks, photographers worked to create a visual record of the city and its people at a time of significant transition. Nathan Lyons, founding director of the Visual Studies Workshop, describes the result as “not only a major documentary project, but a celebration of photography within the city that had for years been a center of imaging technologies.” Copublished with Pier 24 Photography

Best-selling, critically acclaimed book is back in print in an affordably priced, smaller-sized edition

Offers fascinating perspective on the geopolitical tensions that define the former Soviet bloc region surrounding Sochi, Russia
∞∞
Designed by award-winning Dutch design studio Kummer & Herrman, long-time collaborators with The Sochi Project
This new, smaller-sized edition of The Sochi Project: An Atlas of War and Tourism in the Caucasus is the capstone of the award-winning collaborative project. From 2009 through 2013, photographer Rob Hornstra and journalist Arnold van Bruggen traveled to Sochi, Russia, and the surrounding Caucasus, returning repeatedly to this isolated and incredibly complicated region in the midst of its preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Together, the images and texts unpack the complex, multivalent story of this contested region, remaining all the more relevant for the insight they provide into the “true face of Russia” following the Olympics, the annexation of Crimea, the conflict in Ukraine, and the brutal murder of Boris Nemtsov. Hornstra’s photographic approach combines the best of slow-form documentary storytelling with portraiture, found photographs, and other visual elements collected over the course of their travels. Van Bruggen contributes a series of engaging stories about the people, the land, and its turbulent history. Designed by Sochi Project collaborators Kummer & Herrman, this volume is a contemporary masterpiece of photography and journalism in the tradition of James Agee and Walker Evans. In 2014, the book received the Dutch Doc Photo Award, Dutch Design Award for Communication, and Canon Prize for Innovative Photojournalism.

Regarded by critics as one of the great photography books of our time
First published in 1992, Immediate Family has been lauded by critics as one of the great photography books of our time, and among the most influential. Taken against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland summer home in Virginia, Sally Mann’s extraordinary, intimate photographs of her children reveal truths that embody the individuality of her own family yet ultimately take on a universal quality. With sublime dignity, acute wit, and feral grace, Sally Mann’s pictures explore the eternal struggle between the child’s simultaneous dependence and quest for autonomy—the holding on and the breaking away. This is the stuff of which Greek dramas are made: impatience, terror, self-discovery, self-doubt, pain, vulnerability, role-playing, and a sense of immortality, all of which converge in these astonishing photographs. This reissue of Immediate Family has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann’s original prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a freshness and sumptuousness true to the original edition.

The winner of the award in 2013 was French photographer Patrick Faigenbaum for his project Kolkata/ Calcutta, and the resulting exhibition of new pictures was first shown at the HCB Foundation, Paris, in May 2015. This exhibition will now travel to Aperture Gallery, New York, courtesy of the Hermès Foundation, whose support makes the HCB Award possible. This presentation inaugurates Aperture Foundation’s new alliance with the Hermès Foundation. For this series, Faigenbaum focused on the former capital of the British Indian Empire. He explored the historical layers of the city, while engaging with and being informed by the work of contemporary Calcuttan painter and collage and embroidery artist, Shreyasi Chatterjee. Patrick Faigenbaum (born in 1954) is a major figure of contemporary European photography. Since his 1970s portraits of Florentine aristocrats, he has used both black and white and color to create “portraits” of cities that include people, landscapes, and objects. His photography is imprinted with his affinity for classical culture and painting. Among many exhibitions of his work, Faigenbaum was the subject of a twenty-five-year survey of his work at the Vancouver Art Gallery, 2013, curated by Kathleen S. Bartels and Jeff Wall. He lives in Paris, where he has taught at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts since 2001.

Aperture Magazine Edited by Michael Famighetti
Aperture is a sophisticated guide to the world of contemporary photography that combines the finest writing with inspiring photographic portfolios. Presenting fresh perspectives accessible to the photo practitioner and the culturally curious alike, each issue examines one theme at the heart of contemporary photography, explored in two sections: Words, focused on ideas, interviews, and debate, and Pictures, offering an immersive selection of portfolios. Columns include Redux, The Collectors, Curriculum, and Object Lessons. The Fall edition, “The Interview Issue,” features in-depth conversations with a selection of influential photographers of an older generation who continue to produce and publish, about their lifelong engagement with photography. The Winter issue, “Performance,” looks at how photography can be conceived as a live performance, in addition to considering the medium’s essential role in the history of performance-based art. Single issues: $24.95/£14.00 One-year subscription (4 issues): $75.00 Two-year subscription (8 issues): $124.00 Kindle, Nook, and Zinio digital subscriptions (4 issues): $25.00 Aperture 220: Fall 2015 978-1-59711-323-6 Aperture 221: Winter 2015 978-1-59711-324-3
