Welcome to Aperture 2016 Aperture is a publisher that tells the story of photography, across thirty new books each year, the quarterly Aperture magazine, an active backlist of over one hundred and fifty titles, and our online archives. While the experiences of photography we offer in person and online are important components of the Aperture mix, it’s the physical photobook we believe in, above all. The photobook is the considered final expression of a photographer’s work, or the curator’s idea, edited and sequenced to stand as its permanent record. There’s nothing provisional about a book—compared to an exhibition or an online experience, here one moment, altered or gone the next. And, it is in the form of books that a photographer’s projects are most desired, by collectors and all book lovers, around the world. We trust that the love and energy we bring to making beautiful photobooks is apparent in everything you see here. With career surveys of classic photographers, new bodies of work by major artists, first books by emerging photographers, books about the medium, and books about photography for young readers, we want to reach the widest audiences to share in the magic of photography. Our passion is to inspire and excite interest in the work of photographers and the story of photography just as it was sixty-four years ago when Aperture began. We’ve introduced a new format for our catalogue to inaugurate our new distribution partnership in the U.S./Canada with Ingram Publisher Services. The history of photography is teeming with portraits of musicians made iconic by their album covers: Thelonious Monk by W. Eden is one iteration of Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques’s long-term project, Eden—initiated as part of Immersion: A French American Photography Commission. From the outset, Couzinet-Jacques’s proposal included the purchase of a small, historical schoolhouse in Eden, North Carolina, as a site for exploring ideas of property, ownership, and image-making. The primary component of this book is the reproduction of the almost one thousand scans that the artist made of the façade of that house. In other words, the book contains the photographic shell of the building. Woven throughout the book are elements from the four stages of the project’s development over the course of one year—the prospecting and research of a house in Eden; the buying of the Little Red Schoolhouse; the repairs made to the house; and, finally, the exploration and experimentation in and around the house. These materials incorporate historical and legal documents pertaining to the house, as well as video and photographic documentation of the past year.

Louise Dahl-Wolfe is a major survey that spans over thirty years of this fashion photographer’s work. After her work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1937, Louise Dahl-Wolfe went on to revitalize the Hollywood portrait and fashion photography of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. During her two-decade tenure at Harper’s Bazaar, Dahl-Wolfe pioneered the use of natural lighting in fashion photography, shooting on location and outdoors. After studying at the San Francisco Institute of Art, she moved to New York and opened a photography studio, which she maintained until 1960. In 1936 she was hired as a staff photographer at Harper’s Bazaar, and over the next thirty years she revolutionized fashion photography through her editorial and personal work.

George Dureau began taking pictures for the pleasure of photographing his lovers, and as research material for his paintings. All of his photographs were made in his studio in the French Quarter of New Orleans or on the city’s streets. Many of his subjects became part of Dureau’s “extended family,” whom he photographed on different occasions over many years. Although his work is often anthologized in collections of photographs about the male nude, this is the first book of Dureau’s photographs since 1985. Stephen Shore Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers.
