2016

Welcome to Aperture 2016 Aperture is a publisher that tells the story of photography, across thirty new books each year, the quarterly Aperture magazine, an active backlist of over one hundred and fifty titles, and our online archives. While the experiences of photography we offer in person and online are important components of the Aperture mix, it’s the physical photobook we believe in, above all. The photobook is the considered final expression of a photographer’s work, or the curator’s idea, edited and sequenced to stand as its permanent record. There’s nothing provisional about a book—compared to an exhibition or an online experience, here one moment, altered or gone the next. And, it is in the form of books that a photographer’s projects are most desired, by collectors and all book lovers, around the world. We trust that the love and energy we bring to making beautiful photobooks is apparent in everything you see here. With career surveys of classic photographers, new bodies of work by major artists, first books by emerging photographers, books about the medium, and books about photography for young readers, we want to reach the widest audiences to share in the magic of photography. Our passion is to inspire and excite interest in the work of photographers and the story of photography just as it was sixty-four years ago when Aperture began. We’ve introduced a new format for our catalogue to inaugurate our new distribution partnership in the U.S./Canada with Ingram Publisher Services. We are featuring all of our 2016 titles, as frontlist, and introducing our backlist, afresh, for the benefit of those for whom it may be unfamiliar. With interest in photography exploding around us, there’s never been a better time.

—Chris Boot, Executive Director

Aperture magazine

Aperture Magazine Aperture is a sophisticated guide to the world of contemporary photography that combines the finest writing with sumptuously reproduced portfolios. Presenting fresh perspectives by leading writers, art historians, and other thinkers, accessible to the photo practitioner and the culturally curious alike, each issue examines one theme at the heart of contemporary photography through essays, in-depth interviews, and immersive portfolios. Columns include On Portraits, The Collectors, Curriculum, and Object Lessons. Today, in a world awash in images, Aperture is an essential guide to the evolving story of photography.

Aperture The Magazine of Photography & Ideas Edited by Michael Famighetti Required reading for everyone seriously interested in photography.

Sounds

The fall issue of Aperture magazine delves into the relationship between sound and image. How have photographers drawn inspiration from music? How have cultures of image making developed in tandem with music making? Whether capturing an intoxicating performance, or individuals lost in dance or caught in an ecstatic moment of listening, photographs give form to the ways sounds move us. This issue’s features include a profile on William Eggleston and his long-standing passion for music, a conversation with Vancouver-based photoconceptualist Stan Douglas, a remembrance of the legendary Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, a look at underground rave culture in the 1990s, plus much more.

Propositions

The winter issue of Aperture magazine offers a survey of speculations, propositions, and schemes regarding new directions in contemporary photography, focusing on how photographers today respond to the new possibilities offered by technological advancement and dissemination.

Elliott Erwitt: Home Around the World is a visual account of Erwitt’s sixty-year career in photography, from his early experiments in California to his intimate family portraits in New York and his major celebrity and political magazine assignments around the world, as well as his great personal and humorous observations of the street. Essays by photography experts, based on extensive new interviews with the photographer, consider less-studied aspects of Erwitt’s work: his engagement with social and political issues, the humanist qualities of his very early photographs, and his work as a filmmaker. Elliott Erwitt (born in Paris, 1928) is one of the world’s bestknown and most admired photographers today. He is most famous for his candid, often-humorous black-and-white observations on the world from street level. The author of twenty-four books, Erwitt has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1953. Jessica S. McDonald is the chief curator of photography at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Stuart Alexander is an independent curator and international specialist of photographs for Christie’s; Sean Corcoran is a curator of prints and photographs at the Museum of the City of New York; and Steven Hoelscher is chair of the Department of American Studies at University of Texas at Austin. In Richard Renaldi’s fourth monograph, he describes his experiences as a young man in the late 1980s who had recently embraced his gay identity, and of finding a home in “the mystery and abandonment of the club, the nightscape, and then finally daybreak.” Through portraits, landscapes, and club interiors, Renaldi captures that moment when Saturday night turns into Sunday morning across the borough of Manhattan. Manhattan Sunday is a personal memoir that also offers a reflection of the city’s evolving identity.

Sir Elton John, musician and philanthropist, has built one of the greatest private collections of photography in the world. This book presents an unparalleled selection of modernist images, which introduce a crucial moment in the history of photography when artists were beginning to use the camera and darkroom to redefine and transform visions of the modern world. Technological advancements gave artists the freedom to experiment and test the limits of the medium, enabling new imaginings of portraits, nudes, and still lifes; and street life and the modern world were captured from a new, uniquely modern perspective. Shoair Mavlian is an assistant curator at Tate Modern focusing primarily on photography; Simon Baker is the senior curator of photography and international art at Tate Modern; and Dawn Ades is professor emerita at the University of Essex, and former codirector of the Center for the Study of Surrealism and Its Legacies, UK.

Ellsworth Kelly is credited with inventing a new kind of painting, one inspired by nature but also by the chance compositions he encountered in the world. He started taking photographs in 1950, and unlike his sketches and collages, the photographs were not part of his process of making a painting or sculpture; they were simply a record of his vision. Featuring photographs spanning four decades, this is the first book ever published on Kelly’s photography, and the artist was closely involved in all aspects of its making. Ellsworth Kelly (born in Newburg, New York, 1923; died in Spencertown, New York, 2015) was an American artist best known for his painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. His pioneering abstract work has influenced several generations of artists and movements, from Color Field and Minimalism to contemporary painting and sculpture. He studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, from 1941 to 1943 and later attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from 1946 to 1948. When the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana set out on his search for cinnamon in 1541, he could not have anticipated that his travels would bring him to the bends of the world’s longest river: the Amazon. Following in the footsteps of past expeditions, The Jungle Book is a visual experience comprising discreetly staged scenes that reveal the diverse worlds of contemporary Amazonia and its surrounding areas. Photographer Yann Gross worked with different local communities and documented the dynamic culture of the Amazon as influenced by contemporary economic and social forces. Once immersed in this world, the viewer soon forgets romantic clichés of distant lands and indigenous peoples, and begins to question the guiding ideals of progress and development that inform escapist fantasies.

A radically conceived and meticulously produced artist’s book The first book resulting from Immersion: A French American Photography Commission, created by Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and Aperture Foundation An introduction to a young, innovative, and ambitious French artist

Eden is one iteration of Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques’s long-term project, Eden—initiated as part of Immersion: A French American Photography Commission. From the outset, Couzinet-Jacques’s proposal included the purchase of a small, historical schoolhouse in Eden, North Carolina, as a site for exploring ideas of property, ownership, and image-making. The primary component of this book is the reproduction of the almost one thousand scans that the artist made of the façade of that house. In other words, the book contains the photographic shell of the building. Woven throughout the book are elements from the four stages of the project’s development over the course of one year—the prospecting and research of a house in Eden; the buying of the Little Red Schoolhouse; the repairs made to the house; and, finally, the exploration and experimentation in and around the house. These materials incorporate historical and legal documents pertaining to the house, as well as video and photographic documentation of the past year.

Cathedral of the Pines marks a time of transition during which Gregory Crewdson chose to withdraw into the woods. The book is named after a skiing trail deep in the forests of Becket, Massachusetts, where Crewdson felt inspired again. He experienced a reconnection with his artistic process, and moved into a period of renewal and intense creative productivity. It was here that Crewdson found the inspiration to create these pictures in this new body of work.

Border Cantos presents a unique collaboration between photographer Richard Misrach and experimental composer Guillermo Galindo. Misrach’s dramatic landscapes of the border, in the manner of his famed Desert Cantos series, are combined with photographs of musical intruments made out of artifacts of migration: water bottles, clothing, backpacks, spent shotgun shells, ladders, and sections of the border wall itself. Online links within the book allow the reader to hear and watch performances by Galindo on the featured instruments. Richard Misrach (born in Los Angeles, 1949) is one of the most influential color photographers of his generation. Seeing Things: A Kid’s Guide to Looking at Photographs By Joel Meyerowitz •

• •

“Sometimes in a brief moment, you see something beautiful where you didn’t expect it.” —Joel Meyerowitz Learn about photography from popular and captivating master of the medium For every parent who wants to empower their child to navigate the world of images

Aimed at children ages nine to twelve, Seeing Things is a wonderful introduction to photography that asks how photographers transform ordinary things into meaningful moments. In this book, acclaimed and beloved photographer Joel Meyerowitz takes readers on a journey through the power and magic of photography: its abilities to freeze time, tell a story, combine several layers into one frame, and record life’s fleeting and beautiful moments. The book features the work of masters such as William Eggleston, Mary Ellen Mark, Helen Levitt, and Walker Evans, among many others. Each picture is accompanied by a short commentary, encouraging readers to look closely and use their imagination to understand key ideas in photography such as light, gesture, and composition—and, ultimately, how there is wonder all around us when viewed through the lens.

Louise Dahl-Wolfe is a major survey that spans over thirty years of this fashion photographer’s work. After her work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1937, Louise Dahl-Wolfe went on to revitalize the Hollywood portrait and fashion photography of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. During her two-decade tenure at Harper’s Bazaar, Dahl-Wolfe pioneered the use of natural lighting in fashion photography, shooting on location and outdoors. Her modernist outlook changed American visual culture, influencing a school of artists—namely Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, and Irving Penn. Today, she stands among some of the most prestigious photographers of her time. Louise Dahl-Wolfe (born in San Francisco, 1895; died in New Jersey, 1989) began her career making pictures in 1923. After studying at the San Francisco Institute of Art, she moved to New York and opened a photography studio, which she maintained until 1960. In 1936 she was hired as a staff photographer at Harper’s Bazaar, and over the next thirty years she revolutionized fashion photography through her editorial and personal work.

The first and only comprehensive monograph of Cumming’s photography now in print Essential for those interested in conceptual and contemporary art

The Difficulties of Nonsense features Cumming’s conceptual black-and-white and color photographs from the 1970s, revealing his fascination with illusion and trickery. From his base in Los Angeles, Cumming made functional-looking constructions, rendered useless and created primarily to be photographed with his 8-by-10 camera. Playing with props, proportions, unusual angles, light, and mirrors, Cumming created images that invite viewers to look in—and then to second-guess what they see. As the first publication to survey this significant series, The Difficulties of Nonsense serves as a touchstone for contemporary artists and for those interested in artwork that came out of Los Angeles in the 1970s. Robert Cumming (born in Worcester, Massachusetts, 1943) is best known for his conceptual photography of sculptures and drawings that play with the mechanics of photographic practice. He was originally a painting student in the ’60s, and received a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1967.

Monographs and Photobook Classics No art library should be considered complete without Aperture’s classic photobooks— from the very first title published by Aperture, Edward Weston’s Flame of Recognition, to Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, now in print for more than forty years; from contemporary classics such as Sally Mann’s Immediate Family and Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexuality to the remastered and expanded edition of Josef Koudelka’s Gypsies. These are the books that have come to define the canon of photographic literature. In addition to these perennially best-selling and genre-defining books, Aperture continues to publish innovative project-driven, monographic volumes by leading photographers and up-andcoming artists who are shaping the language of photography for the future. These range from surveys by contemporary masters to “First Books” by younger artists, produced with equal care alongside publications that spotlight previously under-recognized treasures from the medium’s history. Diane Arbus Diane Arbus (born and died in New York City, 1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of photographic portraiture—and of the medium itself. In a letter of recommendation, her mentor, Lisette Model, said of her, “Photographers can be good, bad, excellent, first rate, or tops, but there are hardly any artists among them. Here is an exception.” Aperture was the first to publish her work in book form; Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, has been kept in print continuously since its publication in 1972. It is acknowledged as a timeless classic and remains the foundation of her international reputation. Penetrating the psyche with all the force of a personal encounter, Arbus’s photographs transform the way we see the world and the people in it.

Josef Koudelka Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka (born in Moravia, 1938) has been praised for what Sean O’Hagan from The Guardian calls “an eye for telling detail and a formal mastery that, even in his snatched reportage, seems uncanny in its compositional brilliance.” Koudelka first came to international attention for his fearless documentation of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which was initially published anonymously in order to protect his identity. (This extraordinary body of work was published as a book for the first time as Invasion 68: Prague in 2008.) Since the 1980s, Aperture has been part of a consortium of international publishers who have supported his work via its publication, including the masterful new edition of Gypsies (1986/2011). Koudelka continues to photograph around the world; his most recent publication, Wall (2013), focuses on the Israel-Palestine border.

Invasion 68: Prague Photographs by Josef Koudelka Introduction and chronology by Jaroslav Cuhra, Jiří Hoppe, and Jiří Suk Afterword by Irena Šorfová • • •

A disquieting monograph of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Prague Features nearly 250 images that were smuggled out of Czechoslovakia Essential for anyone interested in war photography

In 1968, Josef Koudelka was an acclaimed thirty-year-old theater photographer who had never photographed a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded Prague, ending Czechoslovakia’s short-lived political liberalization, the Prague Spring. This series of photographs was smuggled out of the country and distributed in New York by Magnum Photos, anonymously to avoid reprisals. Sixteen years would pass before Koudelka could safely acknowledge authorship. Today, nearly fifty years later, their transformative quality still resonates. A compelling introduction and chronology by three Czech writers provides a nuanced examination of the invasion.

Sally Mann Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed in the American South since the 1970s, producing ethereal landscapes and evocative portraits of her children and husband, and is committed to addressing themes such as death and cultural perceptions of sexuality. As critic David Levi Strauss contends, Mann approaches taboo subjects “forthrightly, with uncommon respect, tenderness, and compassion.” Immediate Family, originally published in 1992 to critical acclaim, helped establish her as one of the most prominent and fearless contemporary photographers. A hugely influential book, it has been a perennial best-seller for over twenty years.

Mary Ellen Mark Mary Ellen Mark (born in Philadelphia, 1940; died in New York, 2015) has produced a number of images that have become landmarks in the field of documentary and concerned photography. As Melissa Harris, Aperture’s editor-at-large, has noted, “Mary Ellen lived hungrily, fully. . . She was great with her subjects—working so intuitively—and was able to get at the essence of the people she was photographing to tell their stories. It mattered to her to represent them faithfully and truly, and not just in the documentary visual sense, but distinguishing each individual for whom he or she really was in the world. Her work is humane, all heart.”

His various projects explore multifaceted studies of place and its complex relationship to humankind, unifying masterful imagery with critical content. Misrach has published over five books with Aperture, ranging from the overtly political, as in Petrochemical America (2013), to the more meditative and existential, as in The Mysterious Opacity of Other Beings (2015)—but always with an eye unerringly attuned to the equal parts beauty, spectacle, and fragility of the world around us.

Martin Parr Martin Parr (born in Epsom, England, 1952) is a Magnum photographer and a key figure in the world of photography as a practitioner—curator Thomas Weski calls him “a chronicler of our age.” Since the early 1980s he has gained an international reputation for his boldly colorful imagery and his unconventional approach to social documentary, incorporating a humorous, absurdist perspective rare to the genre. He is also a curator, collector, and inveterate advocate for the art of the photobook.

Stephen Shore Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers. For the youngest working today, his series such as American Surfaces and Uncommon Places remain ongoing and indisputable reference points. Shore had his own work purchased by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art at the age of fourteen. At seventeen, he was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory, producing an important photographic document of the scene, and in 1971, at the age of twenty-four, he became the first living photographer since Alfred Stieglitz forty years earlier to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College.
