This year, each school was given the di cult task of choosing three students, one parent, and one sta member to share the innovative opportunities provided to our students that are unique to Duplin County Schools. Each school also had the opportunity to highlight an activity that makes that school special. In addition, school system departments and teams highlighted projects and/or programs that target innovation and contribute to student success.
It is truly a blessing to serve on a student-centered Board of Education where student safety and success will always be top priority. B.F. GRADY ELEMENTARY
At school, I enjoy reading and I am learning a lot of math to prepare me for college one day. I would like to be a hairdresser when I grow up. I like to read when it is too cold to go outside or if it is raining. I also like to read when I am bored.
Future Teachers Club
The Future Teachers Club (FTC) encourages young people to choose teaching as a career and provides a means for students to participate in realistic educational activities. FTC celebrates education and endeavors to spark an interest in teaching. Students will build a better understanding of the roles of educators and the various job opportunities in the eld of education. The club also encourages members to be positive role models at school and in the community. The Future Teachers Club is a new and exciting program at BFG! While just beginning, FTC is already planning many fun and informative events for students and sta . The club will give students hands-on experience and opportunities to collaborate with other students. Just this past week, students worked together to create a beautiful banner display for Read Across America Week. Also, the club gives students an opportunity to show appreciation for the sta members at B.F. Grady that work so hard to provide them a safe and quality education. The future of education lies within our current students, so investing in these young potential teachers is so important.

Beginning in early childhood, Duplin County Schools o ers a variety of opportunities for all students that challenge them to grow and excel. At B.F. Grady, my sons have had the opportunity to participate in Excel, Math, Stem, Book Clubs, Robotics, Sports, and academically gi ed programs. In addition, the opportunities provided in music and band truly encourage students. One opportunity that I nd inspiring for students is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes group that o ers spiritual and biblical guidance. The food program in our district is wonderful because it ensures that all students get meals while in school as well as making sure students have access to a meal a er school hours. DCS o ers so many programs that help students achieve their goals and are always working to make improvements that will better our students. I am a proud member of the DCS district.
Duplin County Schools has an amazing diversity of people, something you don’t see in every county in NC. In my class, we use our different cultures and backgrounds to add to the overall learning experience. Those opportunities of interacting with people from different backgrounds really allows for my classroom, and Duplin County Schools to stand out. One of the opportunities I offer my students that stands out is our Wax Museum. We study American History throughout the year, and then students are given the chance to pick a person we have studied, research that person, and then dress up and become that person. Students love this activity that showcases not only what they have learned about their important American figure, but about American history in general. B.F. Grady is an amazing place to learn. I truly look forward to showing up and working at this school everyday. Our positive vibe in the building is contagious and makes its way into the students and staff. With this overall feeling of positivity and support, students thrive and grow at B.F. Grady.

Attending Duplin County schools has provided a range of opportunities for my children including the opportunity to learn and gain knowledge and skills that are essential for their personal and educational development. Duplin County Schools o er a range of extracurricular activities such as Beta, FCA, FFA, sports, art, and music. This allows my children the freedom to explore their interests. One of the greatest opportunities that DCS has implemented in our schools is the hands-on approach to learning through STEAMA. Our schools have worked hard to integrate problem solving, creativity, and critical thinking into our children’s STEAMA labs. In addition, the 1:1 technology allows our children the opportunity to learn at their own pace through personalized learning that best suits them.

Through Duplin County Schools
Center of Opportunity, our daughter has been afforded the opportunity to catch up on her classes and maintain her grade level requirements. This is due to the individualized attention she receives from the staff. Dr. Kea and his staff certainly go above and beyond for the children there. This has been more than just a school to us, they have become family. Dr. Kea and his staff want nothing more than to see every student succeed not only in school, but in life.

We focus on how agriculture has evolved and how new technology has helped cities to grow. This, in turn, provides my students with opportunities to learn and grow as well. At the Center of Opportunity, we are able to individualize many of our lessons to the student’s interests and abilities. This gives them the support they need to meet their behavior, attendance, and academic goals. Our school culture is one of accountability so we help students set goals and work towards them. We are honest with them when they are not progressing, helping to identify their obstacles. We work hand in hand as a staff with parents and community partners to help our students achieve.

At DECHS, I can talk to students and sta and create bonds unequivocally. I enjoy DECHS because of the opportunity to take honors high school classes and James Sprunt Community College classes at the same time. This gives students a feel for what college courses will be like, and if they choose to go to college, I feel the experience will help a lot. My school is special because of the atmosphere around me. My son Nic has been afforded numerous opportunities by attending Duplin County Schools but chief among those would be his opportunity to graduate from high school with an Associates degree absolutely free. Duplin County Schools present a unique opportunity for students to develop a personalized learning career pathway. Nic has been able to tailor his high school classes to advance his career goals.
Ibelieve a unique aspect of Duplin County Schools is the family feeling that it encompasses. Our school system upholds the belief that we are all connected and because of this, we have a very close-knit community. This allows students to feel supported in the classroom, school, and community. Students have many opportunities such as the STEAMA Fair, Future Teacher Conferences and BETA in which they can collaborate with peers across the county and state.

I currently serve as Teacher Ambassador, and sponsor for the Future Teacher Club and Beta Club. I would describe our school culture as caring, diverse, and adaptive. No matter what challenges may come our way, our staff and students are resilient in overcoming them. We lean on one another, and help our fellow Maverick whenever needed. Because of these qualities, students feel supported and accepted in the classroom. In turn, this results in a better learning environment for them. I believe that our school tries really hard to ensure that students’ social-emotional needs are met first, so that they can excel academically.
EAST DUPLIN HIGH EDHS Band
The EDHS Band is a family of di erent people working towards a common goal which is to create something through the art of music. As a band, we are able to compete at marching band competitions in the fall, participate in county band performances, and go on college trips in the spring. At the end of each semester, we get the chance to perform a concert from the music we have learned during that semester. Band is special because of how di erent everyone in the band is. We all come from di erent backgrounds and walks of life and we embrace those backgrounds while still working together to create something beautiful and uniform.
Duplin County Schools has given me many opportunities to gain work experience prior to graduation. East Duplin is special to me because of the memories I have created and the bonds I have built.
I have been honored with the opportunity to be a part of East Duplin’s Panthers Paw yearbook sta as chief photographer. Duplin County Schools is home to me. I grew up in Duplin County and attended BF Grady and East Duplin. Being able to give back to the students and families within the same school district that poured into me as a student is such a blessing. As a counselor, I assist students with their social-emotional needs, career and college planning, and any other general needs. As the Athletic Trainer for East Duplin, I am very active within our athletic department to ensure the safety and wellness of our student-athletes. East Duplin has such a family atmosphere. The faculty and sta work so well together to help meet the needs of our students. Because of that, I think we have created an environment that encourages student learning and success.

I feel that CCP gave me a head start, and made me want to further my education. In addition, the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities is one of the aspects of school that I look forward to the most. I’ve been able to develop as a person and express myself in a variety of new ways as a result of my involvement in various clubs. Duplin County Schools is made up of a diverse student population. We have students and families from di erent cultural backgrounds, economic industries, and geographic areas. This allows our class conversations to incorporate a wide range of perspectives and expand our students’ understanding of the world around them. My top priority is for students to be able to connect what we are learning to their own lives. When we read something like Maus or a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, I want students to be able to engage with each other organically on what it means to or for them. Students can express themselves through discussion, acting things out, and visual representations that illuminate their artistic skills. James Kenan has a faculty and sta that works well together and with our students. Teachers across the buildings and across subject areas are consistently demonstrating teamwork. Our administrators and support sta coordinate well with our classroom teachers and ensure that we feel valued as team members.

In Duplin County Schools, I’ve been given opportunities to join clubs, start college early, and represent my culture. There aren’t a lot of Arabs here and I think these opportunities teach me so skills at an early age. My future goals are to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or Nursing and be successful. I enjoy spending time with my friends and learning new things. This year, I’ve learned that not everything is going to go your way but everything bad that happens is always going to have a good outcome in the end. At KES, we have been given opportunities to choose our assignments using choice boards. I love when teachers are open-minded and are willing to get out of their comfort zone to help a student. KES will always hold a special place in my heart.

The DCS STEAMA Fair encourages students in grades 3-12 to think critically, explore an area of STEAMA that interests them and produce a project that focuses on an experiment or the design process. Students are able to think outside the box, question the world around them and nd ways to make things work better. At North Duplin Elementary, we think science is fun! We encourage hands-on learning, experimentation and questioning. Our students love doing projects and having unique lessons that allow them to discover new things. The following students showcased their designs and experiments in the 2023 DCS STEAMA Fair: Santiago Kimes, 6th grade; JT Wolfe, 5th grade; Katherine Wolfe, 3rd grade and Lina Kimes, 3rd grade. Santiago presented the Catapult 2.0, which was an improvement on his winning project from last year. JT and Katherine worked as a brother-sister team on VROOM!, a study of force and motion. Lina integrated agriculture into her project, How Does Soil Type A ect the Growth of Sun ower and Corn Plants. All of our students from NDE placed in the STEAMA Fair and enjoyed the opportunity to explore their curiosity and showcase these investigations and designs!
I want to be a truck driver when I grow up. My teacher and my school help me learn how to read and write. I also practice exercises in PE that will help me li the boxes that truck drivers have to pick up. I love to do activities in my class that let me build things. I like to use Legos, kinetic sand, magnets, Playdoh and K’nex. We have Fun Friday centers and I really like those! We get to move around to di erent stations in our classroom to play with fun toys that help us learn and build.

My plan is to de nitely go to college and I would love to be a doctor one day at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I want to maybe start as a phlebotomist and gain experience in the health eld. Everyone at my school is very encouraging and everytime that I have a problem they help me x it. I have recently had trouble managing my time with schoolwork and homework. My teachers, school counselor and classmates have been very helpful and taught me strategies that encourage me to use my time wisely. I like coming to North Duplin Elementary because we are like family and the students and sta make me smile!
My teachers, school counselor and classmates have been very helpful and taught me strategies that encourage me to use my time wisely.
I want to work in the agricultural eld one day and Duplin County Schools gives me the opportunity to learn about STEAMA and focus on how agriculture a ects our lives. For example we have a designated day for learning about farming. My science teacher also helps us learn by including agricultural activities in his lessons. I enjoy school because it gives me the opportunity to learn so I can be successful in my future. My teachers know my goals and help me achieve them so that is how I know that my school is setting me up for a successful future. Since we are a close school our teachers can get to know us better and potentially help some students in their personal lives.
My daughter has been challenged and encouraged during her time at NDE where she has received excellent instruction from dedicated educators. She has experienced many STEAMA opportunities including eld trips, the use of the latest technology, and handson learning which have fueled her love of learning. My daughter’s time at North Duplin has been so positively in uential in her life that she has recently joined the Future Teachers Ambassadors Club. While the size of the school is small, the heart of the school is huge. It is important to my family that the morals and values taught at home be supported in their school setting, which is the case at North Duplin. In addition to the excellent education they are receiving, this rm foundation of lessons in kindness, looking for the best in others, and supporting each other, will serve my children well as they grow into productive members of not only our community, but also the world.
Duplin County Schools is unique because of the opportunities that our district provides for both our students and sta members. We provide real-world opportunities for our students to experience, using various forms of technology, with numerous opportunities for engagement through STEAMA. Our sta members are also driven to help lead students to reaching their highest potential, which is not a factor that can be found just anywhere. The resources that our district provides to both our students and sta helps prepare our students to be successful in their future careers. I provide opportunities for my students that directly relate to their personal learning styles and interests. My students are also given opportunities to express themselves and feel comfortable doing so because of the safe environment that exists in our classroom. The culture at NDE is one that I feel cannot be matched. The sta members are truly family and this re ects positively in our students. Our student population is very diverse and they know that they are loved, supported, and wanted when they come to school. This welcoming environment makes school a fun place to be for sta and students on a daily basis!
NORTH DUPLIN JR. / SR. HIGH
Kindness Initiative
North Duplin Jr/Sr High School decided to focus on spreading kindness this school year. We want our students to do well academically, but first and foremost, we want them to be good people.
Throughout the school year, we have highlighted random acts of kindness. This has encouraged us to notice kindness around us and has encouraged students to think and act more empathetic towards one another.
We have also been recognizing Seniors of the Week, Staff of the Week, and Rebels of the Month to build up our students and staff.
As a student of Duplin County Schools, I was given the opportunity to be inducted into the North Duplin Jr/Sr Beta Club, while participating in sports, band, and my high school classes. I enjoy being with my friends, taking band, learning, and playing sports. Band is probably my favorite class but my band teacher, Mr. T, and the other band kids make it fun. I enjoy learning new things in class and I really enjoy the moment when I understand what the teacher is teaching. It gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. North Duplin is special because of the people. All of my teachers really try to make sure we understand what we are learning. My coaches try to make sure we are having fun and enjoying practice. It’s very nice to go to a school where the teachers and sta genuinely care about you.
I really enjoy the moment when I understand what the teacher is teaching. It gives me a great feeling of accomplishment.
Being a student in Duplin County Schools has granted me an education that will empower me in preparation for my future goals and success as an individual. I have gained knowledge that I know will be practical for me down the road. North Duplin Jr./Sr. is special because I’ve been able to gain relationships with friends and educators that I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else.

We want our students to do well academically, but first and foremost, we want them to be good people.
As a student, I was able to complete my Associate’s Degree thanks to the opportunities o ered through Duplin County Schools and the Career and College Promise. This helped me not only save money and time for the future, but it assisted me in exploring various classes. The one thing I enjoy about school is the people. Most of them I’ve known since elementary school, while others I have only recently met. Nonetheless, I enjoy the time that I am able to spend with them. North Duplin Jr/Sr is special to me because of its teachers. They all show varying degrees of support and care for everyone.
This helped me not only save money and time for the future, but it assisted me in exploring various classes.
My child has been a orded many opportunities while attending Duplin County Schools such as learning about di erent colleges and what each one o ers, and being able to take James Sprunt Community College courses. My child has also had the opportunity to work with great mentors at North Duplin High School who help him each and every day. Duplin County Schools are working each day to provide a safe and e ective learning atmosphere that will take my child into his career eld a er college. The uniqueness of Duplin County schools go back to the teachers, principals, and guidance counselors. These people sacri ce daily for our children.
Duplin County Schools are working each day to provide a safe and e ective learning atmosphere that will take my child into his career field a er college.
The close community and support that we as teachers are provided through Duplin County Schools is vital in the success of my students. I have been in education for 15 years and have served as a classroom teacher for most of those years. The support that Duplin County Schools o ers all stakeholders involved in a child’s education has allowed me to be able to plan, provide, and facilitate well-rounded curriculum based lessons that provide my students with experiences they will hopefully remember as they move forward in their educational journeys. As a teacher I strive daily in my classroom to help my students be successful. When a student feels success, that fosters their self-esteem, and motivation will increase as well. Robert J. Marzano describes teaching by comparing it to science when he said, “The art of teaching is quickly becoming the science of teaching.” I believe that teaching is like science, we as teachers should be growing and changing based on the needs of our students. As a teacher, I am changing and learning new methods every year that can transform how my students learn.
ROSE HILL-MAGNOLIA ELEMENTARY
STEAMA Program
With the incorporation of Arts and Agriculture to STEM, STEAMA has ourished into a one-of-a-kind, robust innovative model bringing the local agriculture community together for one common goal: to provide students with hands-on learning centered around agriculture.
At RHM, students have six working beehives in their pollinator garden, where they get hands-on experience with bee colonies. There are also 3 raised vegetable garden beds, muscadine grape vines, blueberry bushes, bird houses with feeders, as well as in-house hatched, free-range chickens. This year, the focus was extended to local N.C. commodities and with an emphasis on food preparation. Students enjoyed food tasting, making cheese, butter, and ice cream, and learning about the local production of those food products. Students have also toured local businesses such as the Nash Johnson Hatchery and Duplin Wine Cellars.
I want to be a gymnastics teacher when I grow up so I am learning to read. My favorite book is, Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom. I love math because I love guring out puzzles and problems and I enjoy reading because it is fun. Rose Hill-Magnolia is special because it helps us learn new things and we have awesome teachers!
Rose Hill-Magnolia is special because it helps us learn new things and we have awesome teachers!
At Rose Hill-Magnolia, I have been given the opportunity to attend class with my general education peers. I have also attended eld trips to colleges that will prepare me for a great future. What I enjoy most about school is the love my teachers, Mrs. Lisa and Ms. McCullen, show me. When I arrive in the morning, they always say good morning and ask about my family. My school, Rose HillMagnolia Elementary, is so special because my teachers take pride in helping me achieve my goals. They are helping prepare me for high school and college.
At Rose Hill-Magnolia, we are working hard to prepare for EOGs. My goal is to at least make 3s. I would like to work in computers or technology in the future, so working in groups to solve problems will help to prepare me for this career. At school I enjoy math and science best, but science is pretty cool. My teacher has taught me to love science this year. Rose Hill-Magnolia is special because it helps us learn something new every day and helps us get smarter and better. It also teaches us how to be healthy and strong. We also learn how to be better people and citizens.
My teacher has taught me to love science this year.
One of the opportunities my child has been a orded while attending Duplin County Schools is the opportunity to participate in BETA Club. This has allowed her to grow in self con dence and has enabled her to set high expectations for herself and work to accomplish them. Playing sports has given my son the opportunity to learn life skills as a result of being part of a team, and having to think of others and the team, before himself. Duplin County Schools is unique because of the diversity of the teachers and sta and the di erent perspectives and experiences they share with our children. The care they show for our children, and the way they nurture their academic growth, is a rarity that I appreciate.
(BETA Club) has allowed her to grow in self confidence and has enabled her to set high expectations for herself and work to accomplish them.
Duplin County Schools prides itself with the interconnectedness established with students, families, sta and the communities it serves. I am able to continue this at Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary by serving students and mentoring beginning teachers. Through mentoring, I am able to o er insight to beginning teachers on best practices for e ective teaching. This allows for powerful teaching to occur in their classrooms while building nurturing relationships with their students and families. RHM seeks to inspire students to develop a love for learning, while promoting self-con dence, and encouraging them to take pride in their cultural identity both at home and at school. We are excited to continue our tradition of cultivating each and every student at Rose Hill Magnolia to discover and develop their potential to the fullest, while showcasing their individual talents. This has always been at the heart of RHM.

WALLACE ELEMENTARY
At Wallace Elementary, I love the arts and crafts. I am able to go to art class on Thursdays. I also said a poem in the Black History program at my school. I enjoy being in Mrs. Bologna’s class. She allows us to do arts and crafts on Fridays. I really enjoy learning and everyone is nice to me. My teachers help me when I need help.
Student Ambassadors
The role of a Wallace Elementary Student Ambassador is to represent the school in a positive and professional manner both on and off campus. Some of the specific duties of a Wallace Elementary Student Ambassador may include: Welcoming new students and families to the school, conducting tours of the school for visitors, including prospective families and community members, serving as a mentor to younger students, participating in community service projects and representing the school in community events, etc. The Student Ambassador program at Wallace Elementary is designed to develop leadership skills, promote school spirit and pride, and foster a sense of community among students and families. Student Ambassadors are expected to be responsible, reliable, and committed to promoting the values and mission of the school.
I really enjoy learning and everyone is nice to me.
Drama club is one opportunity that I have the privilege of doing at my school. Drama club is a place where I am learning to be an actor and I enjoy being in the drama club with all my classmates. Wallace Elementary is a perfect place to learn and grow. I get to learn about each subject and spend time with my friends. My school is special because we are given the chance to give feedback about new ideas and learn outside of the box. I feel that most schools don’t use the feedback they receive, but WALE does and that makes my school special.
At Wallace Elementary, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Battle of the Books team and the Bullpup Bouncers. These clubs have helped me work hard to meet my goals. I enjoy spending time with my friends at school and my teacher has made school special for me. PE and STEAMA days are so much fun at Wallace Elementary. It is a great school.
I enjoy spending time with my friends at school and my teacher has made school special for me.
My children have taken advantage of several of the before and a er school activities o ered by Duplin County schools that challenge the body and the mind, like Bulldog bouncers and Battle of the Books. In addition, Duplin County rewards students with awards that showcase not only their academic talents and athletic abilities, but also their character. Strong character makes great leaders. The teachers and sta of Duplin County schools genuinely care about their students and want them to be successful. That is evident by their e orts to communicate with parents/ guardians on how their students are doing in class, and what they can do at home to support those e orts to make their students successful.
Duplin County rewards students with awards that showcase not only their academic talents and athletic abilities, but also their character.
A dedication to “STEAMA-Driven Success for All Students” is what makes Duplin County Schools a standout learning community that capitalizes on the unique talents of its members. DCS has provided its youth with a rare perspective and privilege to respect the strength of the culture it is steeped in while exposing its developing young minds to opportunities, both far and near. As a 1st grade teacher and a co-teacher of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program for 4th and 5th grade students, I’ve experienced rsthand how trust in the individual can inspire unprecedented growth. Teaching and learning in an environment that encourages creative freedom is a gem of an education model. Wallace Elementary is a community of kindness built on a solid framework of support and uni ed in our goal to genuinely value potential.

WALLACE-ROSE HILL HIGH
JROTC program
The JROTC program’s major focus is citizenship, leadership development and preparing students to leave high school prepared for college or a career. JROTC is a unique, student-led program where Cadets are mentored by Cadets of a higher rank or grade level. Instructors facilitate various activities, but Cadets take on the primary roles. It’s important to understand that JROTC is not a military recruiting program. It gets students engaged in their school and local communities.
Our Cadets hosted a Robotics event for B.F. Grady, Adopt-AHighway event and has hosted and participated in multiple Pathways events across the district. Cadets march in community parades, have participated in the Rose Hill 9/11 Ceremony, and several Veterans Day ceremonies as well as multiple Drill and Raider events. These opportunities allow cadets to be involved in their schools, and local communities while developing citizenship, leadership, and communication skills. The contacts they make and friendships they develop are instrumental in helping them develop a career and college pathway.
I really enjoy the class options I have at Wallace-Rose Hill. I have been given the opportunity to take Industrial Trades and Technology Applications which helps me to explore di erent trades. I am currently a freshman and I’m excited about graduating in a few years. I am interested in pursuing a career as a game designer as well as exploring other opportunities that await me. WRH is special because of the sta that work here and the ways they make education enjoyable and as safe as possible.
I have been given the opportunity to take Industrial Trades and Technology Applications which helps me to explore di erent trades.
Joining JROTC has helped to support my educational decisions and prepare me for my future career. As a result of this program, I have decided to join the military and major in Kinesiology so that I can help injured athletes. The opportunities at Wallace-Rose Hill allow students like me to be able to focus on career options that best suit our interests. That has allowed me to get an early start on my career path. My school is special because of the unique extra curricular activities they provide to students and because of the special bond that each teacher creates with their students.

Duplin County Schools has provided me with many opportunities to join clubs and volunteer in organizations that have helped me discover who I am and what I enjoy as I give back to my community. They have also helped me to pursue my passion and become a better individual. Being a student at WRH, gives me an opportunity to learn with peers by my side who come from di erent backgrounds. This helps us to understand each other. WRH is a special place because I have sta members who care about my wellbeing. I know that I can count on any sta member to have my back. They provide me with a safe space and inspire me to achieve greatness. My educators will help me change the world for the greater good. I am beyond grateful for Duplin County Schools.
My educators will help me change the world for the greater good. I am beyond grateful for Duplin County Schools.
My children have attended Duplin County Schools since Kindergarten. They have been a orded many opportunities but the main one has been the opportunity to attend James Sprunt Community College while in high school. This allowed them to get some college credits at no cost.
The opportunity for my daughter to play sports has been a very positive in uence for her. She has learned to be a team leader and has made a great group of friends. DCS is unique due to the fact that they have parent-friendly schools. I have always felt welcome and knew if I needed to call the principal(s), things would be handled fairly. In addition, I have always felt my children have been safe at school and that is very important. Finally, I like how STEAMA is incorporated in the curriculum. STEAMA has something for every student, involves all students and gets them ready for college and the outside job environment.
Unlike other schools with larger student populations, we have more of an opportunity to get to know each of our students at WRH. This helps us understand the issues that can impact them in the learning environment so we can apply different learning strategies. Before Covid, students were already facing issues with social media by trying to keep up with popularity or their own image. During Covid, the issue grew due to them being home and isolated from human interaction. Now more than ever, I believe it’s important to connect with and build relationships with our students. The diversity of our student population is what makes us special. As a teacher, I am able to focus on building relationships with my students and focus on teaching and learning. Most importantly, everyone feels like family at WRH and this helps everyone feel like they belong.
I have always felt my children have been safe at school and that is very important.Teacher

Duplin County Schools (DCS) has provided me with many opportunities for my future goals. For example, as a middle school student, I’ve had the opportunity to take the high school course, World History. This is a great opportunity because I won’t have to worry about completing this course in high school and can place my focus on another course. I have learned so many new things from this course and my teachers and peers have been really supportive. I enjoy learning something new every day. Most of the time it is educational and other times it’s to prepare us for the “real world.” WARE is focused on their students to be pro cient in school so they can have a PAWsome future and life.
WARE is focused on their students to be proficient in school so they can have a PAWsome future and life.
My personal experiences have been great at Warsaw Elementary. I’ve been given many opportunities like the Junior Beta Club. The Junior Beta program has helped me work to my fullest potential, allowed me to do volunteer work, and overall, helped me with my self esteem. Warsaw Elementary is a school that likes to push you, and wants you to be the best you can be. We have a “Future Teacher” club for students who would like to be a teacher when they grow up. WARE has many sports and volleyball is personally my favorite. We also have good coaches and I enjoy the challenge they give me. I mean it does tire me out sometimes, but I know it will get me to where I would like to be. Also, I am very appreciative of the teachers at our school and the friends I gain here. My school is special because it gives you the experience you need for real life, and helps with the ups and downs of life. It helps you bring yourself out to be more extroverted, as well as give you the freedom to do your own thing if you please.
I am very appreciative of the teachers at our school and the friends I gain here.Principal: Pamela Murray
Duplin County Schools has provided opportunities for me to learn, play sports and prepare for my future. My teachers and playing sports really make school enjoyable for me. Every teacher at Warsaw Elementary holds us to high expectations and makes sure we follow the rules. They will always help us when we are feeling down.

Duplin County Schools has a rich culture of supporting its students and stakeholders through academics, sports, and extracurricular activities.
Duplin County Schools is unique in its initiative to provide students with opportunities through STEAMA (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, & Arts). DCS works to provide our rural-area students with opportunities that will prepare them to be globally competitive citizens prepared to enter an ever-changing workforce. These initiatives a ord me the opportunity to create activities that promote college and career readiness and access to technological advancements, such as on-campus eld trips to learn about solar energy and circuiting. Working with the local Agricultural Cooperative Extension, I was able to help coordinate agricultural lessons for our K-5 classes, along with an Agricultural Day where students could see farm machinery, animals, and learn about the Smith eld Foods industry. I provide my students with opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally. I meet students where they are and help them see their own areas of strength and weakness. I provide them with opportunities for success that will increase motivation and belief in oneself, while helping them to set future goals.
The Accountability/Educational Equity/School Improvement/ MTSS Department collaborates with district and school sta , as well as local and state partners, to provide highly supportive and safe learning, teaching, and working environments for students and sta Support of the district’s vision and mission is provided in the areas of
accountability/testing, administrative services, Board policy, educational equity, dropout prevention, MultiTiered System of Support, school improvement, school safety, and technology.
The safety of students and sta is our Board of Education and school system’s number one priority. Collaboration among departments, schools, community and state partners help to ensure schools are prepared
when safety issues arise. DCS received $1.7 million in grant funding to continue providing a School Resource O cer for every school, purchase safety equipment such as security cameras, fencing, door alarms, and card access systems, and provide mental health assistance for students in need. Metal detectors are utilized during athletic events to help keep athletes, sta , and spectators safe. The Duplin County Sheri ’s O ce provides annual Critical Incident Response Training for all sta , and schools regularly conduct safety drills.
The safety of students and sta is our Board of Education and school system’s number one priority.
The Duplin County Schools Technology Department takes pride in supporting digital teaching and learning as well as many other digital functions of the district. The department is dedicated to working with district and school sta to sustain the current 1:1 technology program, which provides a Wi-Fi enabled device to every student enrolled in the district. The district
applied for and received Emergency Connectivity Funds totaling over $900,000 in the last year for new iPads assigned to students in grades PreK2 and hotspot data subscriptions for students without reliable home internet. Additionally over the last year, the district has upgraded its security camera storage servers and replaced many security cameras throughout our schools to ensure
the highest video quality possible. Recently, we also upgraded the Wi-Fi infrastructure in all of our PreK-8 schools and Duplin Early College, following a previous upgrade in our comprehensive high schools. With the safety and well-being of our students at the forefront, the district also utilizes Gaggle so ware to monitor student activity on schoolprovided devices for concerning content.
The Curriculum Innovation Department provides curriculum support, resources, instructional strategies and professional development opportunities for students and sta . This year, students in grades 3-13 had the opportunity to participate in the annual District STEAMA Fair to showcase their science and engineering projects. From there, several of our students moved on to compete at the regional and state level. With funding from
the NC Arts Council, three resident artists have worked with students this year. NC artist Senora Lynch infused the culture and history of Native Americans in North Carolina as she taught pottery techniques with middle grade students. We also hosted storyteller Donna Washington and the African American Dance Ensemble, who provided cultural and performing arts instruction for our students. In addition, Duplin County Schools has continued to
implement the Science of Reading and LETRS professional development with the goal for all students to read on grade level by third grade. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers and Making Math Matters programs have provided after school learning opportunities for students in grades 4-8 where they have engaged in STEAMA activities, received social emotional supports, and participated in career-related math experiences.
As part of the Curriculum Innovation department, the Beginning Teacher Support Program provides sustained professional development for all beginning teachers (BTs) in their first three years of teaching. To begin that district support, the BT department staff conducts a weeklong summer orientation that takes a collaborative approach to provide training in areas of exceptional children, digital learning, instructional strategies, classroom management, and interventions. Beginning Teacher Coordinators are assigned to each school and help guide mentors and new teachers in the transition process into the classroom. Consistent classroom support designed to meet the unique needs of our beginning teachers is crucial to the success and retention of our teachers.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) empowers students to be successful citizens, workers and leaders in a global economy. The DCS CTE department o ers courses in eighteen di erent career pathways including honors and advanced level courses. In 2021-2022, DCS CTE students earned 1,797 industry recognized credentials outperforming the state goal by more than 30%.
CTE in Duplin has accomplished many things this year that will move our program to the next level. We have increased the number of Career and Technical student organizations at each school. This summer we will host a middle grades CTE Space Camp and a High School District C Teamship camp. A grade expansion grant will
also add robotics kits to each of our middle school CTE STEAMA programs. In addition, an ancillary items grant will allow us to add a Family and Consumer Sciences program and a new lab at Wallace-Rose Hill High School starting Fall 2023. Just recently, we hosted four Career Pathway Discovery events for rising 9th graders to learn more about CTE programs and a District-Wide Career and College Fair for all 10th graders. CTE is working hard to create 21st century workers that can be successful in a global economy.
The Duplin Agribusiness Academy provides enrichment opportunities that are driven by student interests and goals. Workshops, such as our Animal Science workshop, utilizes hands-on skills such as injections, animal dissections, and animal handling that students can take back to the classroom or into a workplace setting. College and industry tours provide students with valuable
information that will help with postsecondary decision making. This year students had the opportunity to tour the campus of the University of Mount Olive as well as their school farm. Students also toured Duplin Winery, and House of RaefordWallace Division, poultry processing facility. Special events, such as Women in Agriculture, give students the unique opportunity to network
with leaders in the agriculture industry through breakout sessions, panel discussions and keynote speakers. This year was the largest Women in Agriculture event to date, hosting 90 high school females with an interest in agriculture along with 35 professionals sharing their knowledge of the agribusiness industry.
A grade expansion grant will also add robotics kits to each of our middle school CTE STEAMA programs.
For the rst time since COVID, Duplin Health Sciences Academy was able to reinstate its job shadowing program for 10th and 11th graders, as well as return to a face to face ECU Health Career Fair. These programs are provided as a result of Duplin County School’s partnership with ECU Health Hospital. The academy was
also able to increase the number of clinical workshops o ered which are intended for students to gain “handson” experiences in a variety of clinical skills. Students learned to perform basic suturing, insert IV’s, trachs, and NG tubes; perform injections, urinary catheterizations, and much more. Students enjoyed three
community service eld trips to the Eastern North Carolina Food Bank, continuing the academy’s dedication to helping citizens in Eastern North Carolina that have food insecurities. These are just a few of the many programs the Duplin Health Sciences Academy o ers to our “future healthcare workers”.
The Duplin Industrial Trades and Technology Academy completed its rst year of implementation with an overwhelming success. Students demonstrated an interest in high demand, skilled careers such as welding, electrical, diesel and heavy equipment, and engineering. Work based learning is a key element of this academy as students will progress through employability skills workshops, job shadowing and internship during their high school career. In addition to work based learning, career exploration and exposure is essential. This year the academy hosted a monthly Trade Talk Series which featured electrical, diesel, welding, construction, engineering, industrial maintenance, law enforcement, emergency medical services, re service, and line work. Academy members have participated in industry tours at House of Raeford and Summit Industrial of Wallace
as well as Nash Johnson & Sons’ in Rose Hill to learn about potential career opportunities and their connections to the trade industries. The academy looks forward to helping grow this pipeline in order to serve and equip our local business and industries.
Junior Reserve O cer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program o ered in many high schools in the United States, designed to provide students with leadership training. The program is a liated with the United States Army, and o ers a range of activities including physical training, marksmanship, and community service. The mission of the program is to motivate young
people to be better citizens. JROTC helps to develop leadership skills, discipline, and physical tness in students, while also promoting a sense of community and patriotism. JROTC can be a positive in uence on students who might otherwise be at risk of dropping out of school or engaging in delinquent behavior. Duplin County Schools JROTC programs have been very active this year. Annually, our DCS JROTC programs participate in the local parades, work on various community service projects, host and compete in radar competitions, host a military ball, and compete in the cadet of the county competition, to name a few. Digital learning, maker spaces, and school media centers are essential components of modern education. In today’s fast-paced, technologydriven world, it is more important than ever for students to develop skills in digital literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Digital learning provides students with the opportunity to learn through technology, accessing vast amounts of information and resources at their ngertips. Makerspaces, on the other hand, o er a hands-on approach to learning, encouraging creativity and innovation through the use of tools and technology such as access to 3D printing, coding, woodworking, videography, sewing, and a variety of other resources. Our STEAMA Digital Teaching & Learning Specialists work closely with teachers to provide the support they need to e ectively integrate technology
into their teaching and enhance student learning outcomes. This year, teachers have participated in the Blended Learning Educator cohorts to explore ways to enhance student engagement, support personalized learning, and foster collaboration and communication among students. Finally, our school media centers serve as the hub of learning and
innovation in our schools. They provide students with a safe, curated space to access information, learn research skills, collaborate with their peers, and develop a love for reading and lifelong learning.
The Exceptional Children’s Department is committed to ensuring all children with disabilities have available to them a free, appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs
and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living. Our purpose is to ensure that children with disabilities develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. The departmental highlights that we are so proud to be a part of each year
include, the Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament and Grant Program, Special Olympics, and the Exceptional Children’s Celebration. These events bene t our children in so many ways while giving our students an opportunity to showcase their amazing talents and abilities.
The ESL Program is committed to the success of our students who are learning English as a second language.
Our Federal Programs sta has provided extensive professional development to all schools on how to use the N.C. English Language Development Standards, adopted March 2021. These trainings will help teachers meet the needs of our multilingual learners. Our MEP sta hosted a parent literacy workshop titled “STEAMA
Fairytale Night.” The workshop modeled ways to promote reading and literacy skills at home. Parents were provided bilingual literacy kits containing three popular fairy tales, written in English and Spanish. “The Three Little Pigs” was used to show parents how to promote literacy skills such as making inferences and predictions in a way that they can replicate at home. A erwards, students utilized the pillars of STEAMA to build each of the houses in the story.
The Duplin County Schools Federal Programs Department manages the administration of federal funds and services for all of our schools. These services include the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and PreK. Each of these unique programs work in unison to provide our students with educational opportunities that will ensure their success. In addition, the Federal Programs Department manages Title I funding, which is one component of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015.
The Duplin County PreK program supports the early learning, development, health, and well-being of our PreK students. Our program is designed to support our students’ families while providing high-quality educational experiences to enhance school readiness for eligible fouryear old children. The PreK program staff works to prepare students in the developmental domains of social-emotional learning, health and physical development, language and communication, and play and cognitive development, which sets the children on a trajectory for future success. This year, PreK staff participated in professional development through a series of interactive workshops on Conscious Discipline and Play Based Learning. In addition, Exceptional Children staff members, Ashley Miller and Kristen Merritt, presented a workshop on sensory processing issues that can be typical in a Preschool classroom. Teachers will apply the knowledge and skills learned to create more meaningful learning experiences for all PreK children across the district.
School Counselors are strong advocates for our students’ social and emotional wellbeing. They have successfully coordinated the completion of social-emotional screeners at their respective schools and have completed professional development that will allow them to navigate the student survey data. This training has also allowed School Counselors the ability to interpret results of the social-emotional screener and identify areas of
strength and areas of opportunity for each school. Their tireless work of addressing the social and emotional
needs of our students will ultimately help to prepare them for career, college and life success.

As DCS strives to become an exemplary school system where all students excel in a globally competitive society, our Human Resources Department (HR) strives to meet the increasing demand for top quality teachers. With the reported teacher shortages in North
Carolina (especially in rural counties like Duplin), HR continues to focus on building capacity from within. This year DCS has another Teacher Assistant graduating with her degree in Elementary Education and ready to join the sta in one of our eight elementary schools. Additionally,
one of our current Grow Your Own scholarship recipients is completing eld experience observations in DCS as she transitions to ECU’s College of Education. We are also extremely excited about the opportunity to recruit student interns currently serving in schools across our district.
The Duplin County Board of Education is committed to ensuring a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students, teachers and sta . We are very fortunate that, for almost ten years, every school has had a full-time, sworn, and trained School Resource O cer (SRO) present before, during and a er school hours.
SROs serve in many capacities, and their knowledge of law, current crime trends, and school safety practices make them a true asset to our school community. SRO’s are committed to building positive relationships with our students. Their duties go well beyond law enforcement and security to mentoring and problem solving in order to maintain classroom environments that are conducive to powerful teaching and learning. SROs also play a key role in our crisis prevention and preparedness e orts
by conducting Critical Incident (Crisis and Active Shooter) training for all employees. In addition, periodic assessments and monthly drills are conducted in an e ort to evaluate facility safety and student and sta readiness in the event of a crisis. We are thankful for our
longstanding partnership with the Duplin County Sheri ’s O ce and look forward to our continued collaboration. We are also grateful for our home-to-school connections with parents and families, as we all work together to keep our campuses safe for our children.
Duplin County schools had four PreK8 schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program this school year (FFVP). This program is federally assisted and provides fresh fruits and vegetables to children at no cost in eligible elementary schools during the school day. The goal of the FFVP is to increase consumption of new and different varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables among children. It also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition. In addition, the Child Nutrition Department has received recognition for having 100% of staff members hold an active School Nutrition Association membership and re-establishing a local SNA Chapter. The DCS Transportation Department works hard to ensure that students are transported safely to and from school and school-related events each day. To ensure that buses are well maintained and upgraded as needed, our department has been able to purchase and replace three older activity buses this year. We have also been able to purchase an additional activity bus, through the VW settlement grant. The department has also completed
the annual N.C. Department of Public Instruction inspection process for school bus safety. We are proud of our results indicating a high level of safety for our buses. In addition, our department ensures that we have a pool of well-trained bus drivers that can be ready to serve in various driving capacities, through training provided in the bus driver training course. Through all of these e orts, we take great pride in making sure that our buses are always ready to safely transport our students and sta each day.

This includes individual counseling, group therapy, and support for families such as connecting students and families with community resources, such as mental health services and food assistance programs.
Sports are an important part of the school experience for our students and community. Designed to promote the physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of student athletes, athletic programs also work to support the academic mission of our schools. leadership skills, and goal setting ability. Each year, over 500 middle school and 700 high school student athletes, strive for success on and o the eld. Whether you are a proud parent, family member, student fan or alumnus, athletic programs continue to bring us together as one. These days will build upon the District’s commitment to promote STEAMArelated careers for all students. The addition of our Agriculture Awareness
Days has proven to be very exciting for our students, sta and the agribusiness community.
