KENANSVILLE

COUNTRY SQUIRE

Nestled between the towns of Warsaw and Kenansville is the Country Squire. The dimly lit, rustic interior with low ceilings and thick glass windows harkens back to owner Iris Lennon’s Scottish roots. Famous for its steaks for more than 50 years, the restaurant has a reputation to live up to, and they deliver time after time. Country Squire specialties include marinated turkey, Korean beef, grilled pork tenderloin, and an array of seafood. The food is all 100 percent Southern Amer-

ican fare, with a bit of a Scottish twinge here and there. The Country Squire also has its own winery on-site, so there are to pair with your sirloin steak and

heartier meats. The restaurant also offers its signature cheese dip, which is a must, and homemade salad dressings. The Country Squire is located at 748 N.C. Hwy. 50, Kenansville.

BEULAVILLE

ANN’S THAI KITCHEN laid-back atmosphere of eastern North Carolina at Ann’s Thai Kitchen of Beulaville. Ann and Tim Deaver opened up Ann’s Thai Kitchen in Beulaville in 2013 when they realized there was no Thai cuisine in the area. Ann is originally from Trat, country to Duplin County. At Ann’s Thai Kitchen, you can enjoy the many soups, rice and curry dishes, and seasoned vegetables that they offer. Some of their most popular dishes are the cashew chicken, fried rice, crab rangoon, spring rolls, and tom yum soup. One dish that always gives people a chuckle when they see it on the menu is the drunk man noodle dish. Thai cuisine is great for those who have restrictive diets, or are vegan or vegetarian. For anyone, though, Ann’s Thai Kitchen is the perfect place to go to experience another culture right here in Southeastern North Carolina. You can enjoy a taste of Thai at Ann’s Thai Kitchen every day except Sunday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. They may be contacted at 910-298-8425.

ROSE HILL

THE WORLD’S LARGEST FRYING PAN

N

o trip to Rose Hill is complete without stopping by to check out the World’s Largest Frying Pan, located smack dab in the middle of the Town Square. Though there’s no official log of visitors, it’s estimated that thousands visit the frying pan each year. The two-ton, 15-foot frying pan was built in 1963 by Ramsey Feed Company. The first meal was cooked in the operational eight-section pan on Oct. 19, 1963 for the town’s first annual Poultry Jubilee. Since then, the pan has been used to fry up chickens for the festival every year. The frying pan is actually a large deep fryer, with its

The frying pan is kept covered when not in use, and is also sheltered from the elements by a redroofed gazebo. In 2018, a group of Rose Hill townsfolk joined together to host a fundraiser to help refurbish and repair the frying pan. By the time the annual Poultry Jubilee was held that November, the frying pan looked as good as new. Members of the Rose Hill Volunteer Fire Department

LIBERTY HALL

Liberty Hall in Kenansville is a reminder of times past, when Antebellum architecture was all the rage and plantations dotted the Southern landscape. Liberty Hall was built in the early 1800s and is the ancestral home of the prominent Kenan family who were among the founders and early leaders in Duplin County and the state. The house has been restored and is a Southern Historic Landmark museum, welcoming visitors from all over the world. The palatial Kenan home is furnished with period furniture and boasts 11 rooms, as well as outbuildings including a garden shop, wine cellar, smokehouse, bath-

house, overseer’s cottage and more. There’s also an exhibit featuring the wedding gown worn by Mary Lily Kenan in 1901—what was dubbed as The Wedding of the Century in those days. Liberty Hall is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is cash only; $2.50 for children under the age of 12 and $5 for adults. TARKIL BRANCH FARM’S HOMESTEAD MUSEUM Benny and Annette Fountain opened Tarkil Branch Farm’s Homestead Museum as a way to educate the community and preserve the proud heritage of Duplin County’s farmers. The farm was named “Tarkil” because of an old tar kiln located on the property. The kilns were used in the 18th and 19th centuries to produce pine tar, pitch and turpentine for the maritime industry. Pitch is made from pine trees, which happen to be plentiful throughout Southeastern North Carolina. The museum features a completely furnished 1830s-era “dog trot” style house, which were popular in the 18th and 19th century, and feature large breezeways through the center of the house to cool occupants during hot Southern summers. In addition to the home, there are 11 other vintage buildings, which contain more than 850 artifacts. Other buildings on the property include a tobacco barn, corn crib, smokehouse, country store and even a chicken house that hosts all manner of educational exhibits. The Fountains offer tours that take visitors all over the farm on a wagon pulled by a vintage tractor. One of the many sights you’ll see on the tour is an artesian well. There are three of them currently on the property, as well as a creek that runs through the middle of the farm. Before leaving, it’s also recommended that visitors check out Benny’s stash of grass-fed beef, which he sells by the pound, straight from the farm. There are also soybeans, corn and grassy waterways on the farm. For more information or to schedule a visit, go to www. tarkilfarmsmuseum.com or call 910-298-3804.

ROSE HILL

DUPLIN WINERY There’s a reason Duplin County has become well known for its wines — and that, of course, is due in large part to Duplin Winery, headquartered in Rose Hill. Over the past 45 years, Duplin Winery has built its reputation as one of the best wineries in the entire state. With a tank capacity of over 2 million gallons, the winery sells more than thousands of cases of wine annually and fills about 40,000 bottles each day. All Duplin wines are cold fermented to preserve the

natural sweetness of the Muscadine grape, a mainstay of the county. In addition to the massive production and sales, an estimated 150,000 visitors stop by the original Duplin Winery in Rose Hill or the Myrtle Beach, S.C. location, which opened in 2015. Duplin’s award-winning Carolina wines include Magnolia, featured in Martha Stewart Living as a favorite summertime wine; Hatteras Red, a North Carolina favorite enjoyed with barbecue; and Scupper-

In addition to the Grape Stomp every September, the winery regularly hosts Murder Mystery dinner theatre programs. “This full-on ‘comedy whodunit’ dinner theater is full of original scripts, talented actors and will not only challenge your brain, but they will also tickle your funny bone,” the winery promises on its website. Every Christmas season, Duplin Winery hosts a holiday-themed dinner theatre, Down Home Country Christmas, featuring entertainment and a threecourse meal for the entire family.

The Chapel at Duplin is set among the pines and offers spectacular lake and vineyard views. It features 4,000 square feet of event space under a dramatic 16-foot
