“Remembering & Honoring Evalina Williams Badham” Remarks by New York Attorney Alfred Jones and other members of the Badham Family
Evalina Hudson Williams Badham passed away on December 17, 1935 at the age of 82. A passionate advocate for African American education, local tradition holds that she first came to Edenton to teach at a school that had been established by the Freedmen’s Bureau. Her teaching career included leadership positions at the Edenton Public School and the Edenton Normal and Industrial College. Her zeal for teaching also led her husband, Hannibal Badham Sr., to construct a schoolhouse for her near their home on East Gale Street. Evalina and Hannibal Badham were also prominent members of the Kadesh A.M.E. Zion Church which Hannibal Badham Sr. is credited with building.
