Lidia’s life: Celebrity chef Bastianich reflects on career with ‘Culinary Jubilee’

iHeart the holidays: ABC partners with iHeartRadio to televise 2023’s ‘Jingle Ball’
on as a streaming partner, releasing the special the next day, Friday, Dec. 22. “The biggest holiday music event in America is coming to ABC for the first time,” announced John Sykes, president of Entertainment Enterprises for iHeartMedia. “Viewers will have a front-row seat to experience this multi-city tour as it rolls across the country.” This year’s event — a series of concerts held from Sunday, Nov. 26, to Saturday, Dec. 26 — featured performances held across the country, with stops including Tampa, Florida; Dallas/Fort Worth; Los Angeles; Chicago; Detroit; New York City; Boston; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Atlanta; and Fort Lauderdale/ Miami. The televised special features footage from this year’s top performers from each and every show, with ABC promising artists such as Usher (“Confessions,” 2004), Niall Horan (“The Show,” 2023), Olivia Rodrigo (“GUTS,” 2023), Nicki Minaj (“Pink Friday 2,” 2023), SZA (“SOS,” 2022), OneRepublic (“One Night In Malibu,” 2022), AJR (“The Maybe Man,” 2023), Sabrina Carpenter (“Emails I Can’t Send,” 2022), Miguel (“All I Want Is
2023), Ludacris (“Back For the First Time,” 2000) and many more also performed throughout 2023’s “Jingle Ball,” potentially making appearances in the special. The network has also shared that for the 10th consecutive year, all cities involved in the tour have partnered with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, a “non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring today’s youth through entertainment and education focused initiatives,” according to ABC. Celebrate the season of cheer with the “iHeartRadio Jingle Ball,” airing on ABC Thursday, Dec. 21.

While this may be one of her most formative childhood food experiences, the association between food and family was just beginning for young Bastianich. Now 76 years old, the celebrity chef is quick to note that cooking, for her, “goes beyond just nourishing the body.” “It’s [about] nurturing the person, the soul and the sentiments that come with it,” Bastianich says. “Food is a communicator ... no matter what culture, if you sit down, and you eat each other’s food, somehow doors open. You are accepting that person — through that food — for what they are.” And there is no denying that this Italian food ambassador knows about people. As PBS’s “25 Years with Lidia” shows through interviews with friends, family and colleagues of hers from throughout the years, Bastianich is an excellent communicator herself and values meaningful, deeply human connections above all else. To support this, the hour-long documentary features moments with fellow chef/ restaurateurs Jacques Pepin (“Jacques Pépin Heart & Soul”), Mary Sue Milliken (“Too Hot Tamales”), Elizabeth Falkner (“The Next Iron Chef ”) and Geoffrey Zakarian (“The Kitchen”). Perhaps the most surprising appearance in “25 Years with Lidia,” though, is that of celebrated actor and fellow Astorian Christopher Walken (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994). “I came [to the United States] at 12 years old, as an immigrant, and we lived in Astoria, Queens. ... Right across the street was Walkens’ Bakery,” explains Bastianich as she elaborates on the sense of community among immigrants to New York City at the time. “Christopher [Walken]’s father was a German immigrant and he was a great baker, so [then] a 16-year-old immigrant ... I applied ... and he took me on weekends,” Bastianich says. “Christopher’s job was to fill the jelly doughnuts with jelly and he used to press them and make a mess. We were friends, you know, the weekends we were there.” Beyond the interviews with Bastianich and those closest to her, “25 Years with Lidia” also features “rare and never-before-seen video and photographs” from the now-established chef ’s journey to celebrity, including recollections of milestone moments such as her and her husband’s critically acclaimed first restaurant, Buonavia, which opened in 1971, and her career-solidifying dinner with Julia Child and James Beard at her third restaurant, Felidia. An emblematic figure of traditional Italian cooking in America, Bastianich is honored for her contribution to the culinary arts “with a celebratory meal, held at Lidia’s family-owned restaurant, Becco, in Manhattan. Sharing in the special occasion are longtime friends Jacques Pépin, Christopher and Georgianne Walken, Geoffrey Zakarian, NYC restaurateur Angelo Vivolo, and Geoffrey Drummond, who was Julia Child’s producer and helped Lidia get started in television” (per PBS).

Edmund Gwenn, “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947): Arguably the ultimate screen Santa — who has a tough time proving he’s the real deal — Gwenn won an Oscar for his performance in this perennial holiday favorite. Stan Francis (voice only), “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (1964, TV): It wouldn’t be the season without the sound of this Santa who asks outcast Rudolph to guide his sleigh. The success of this program launched a whole set of “Animagic” stop-motion-animation specials from the Rankin-Bass studio. John Call, “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” (1964): Even when spirited away by aliens — with a young Pia Zadora among them — Santa keeps an upbeat demeanor in this cult classic.
Alberto Rabagliati, “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” (1966): While Santa’s meaning to youngsters is the same in any language, English remained the predominant language as director and star Rossano Brazzi made this fantasy in Italy. Jeff Gillen, “A Christmas Story” (1983): He’s on the screen only briefly, but this department-store Santa sticks in many memories for the way he sends an overanxious Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) sliding down backward out of his presence. David Huddleston, “Santa Claus” (1985): Also casting Dudley Moore as an elf, this fantasy wasn’t a success at the box office, but veteran character actor Huddleston was ideal casting as Father Christmas. Ken Hudson Campbell, “Home Alone” (1990): Given what he goes through when his va-
cationing family accidentally leaves him behind with thieves, resourceful young Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) deserves a session with Santa. Tim Allen, “The Santa Clause” (1994): Morphing into the new Santa proves complicated for a divorced dad whose belief in Kris Kringle has a payoff he never expected. Richard Attenborough, “Miracle on 34th Street” (1994): The aforementioned Gwenn is a very hard act to follow in the role of the man who claims to be Santa, but skilled actor-director Attenborough puts his own effective spin on the part. Edward Asner (voice only), “The Story of Santa Claus” (1996, TV): Seven-time Emmy winner Asner has been Santa in a number of projects, often in voice only, as is the case with this animated classic.

‘Lego Masters’ returns with star-studded holiday special
“Lego Masters” heads to the Hollywood hills for the holidays, when the two-night special event “Lego Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular” airs Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 18 and 19, on Fox. Hosted by “Lego Masters” frontman Will Arnett (the voice of Batman in “The Lego Movie,” 2014) and judged by returning “brickmasters,” senior design manager at Lego, Amy Corbett, and Lego set designer Jamie Berard, this holiday special promises to “shake it up like a snow globe, with unpredictable twists and surprises as special guests [...] compete in jaw-dropping, holiday-themed challenges for charities of their choice,” according to Fox. The challenges, of course, all consist of larger-than-life Lego builds, closely following the format of the original show. Variety explains: “The reality competition follows teams of two as they compete against each other in ambitious brick-building challenges to be crowned the country’s most talented amateur Lego builders. In each episode, the competing pairs who impress the judges make the most progress to the next round, until the finale, during which the top teams will face off for a cash prize, the ultimate Lego trophy, and the grand title of Lego Masters.”
The difference with this special holiday event — aside from featuring a festive theme and a whirlwind two-night runtime — is that the competing pairs are comprised of one former “Lego Masters” contestant and one Hollywood celebrity, with this 2023 season featuring NeNe Leakes (“The New Normal”), Marshawn Lynch (“Bottoms,” 2023), Kelly Osbourne (“The 7D”) and Rob Riggle (“The Hangover,” 2009), together pairing up with fan-favorite former contestants David Guedes (Season 3), Caleb Schilling (Season 2), Krystle Starr (Season 1) and Randall Wilson (Season 2). While this is not the first “Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular,” it will certainly not be the last. Before “Lego Masters” Season 4 began in September of this year, Season 5 was announced, scheduled to air next year and finish with another “Bricktacular” in December 2024. Any future contestants are yet to be announced.
