BABY CRIB SAFETY REGULATIONS Crib standards changed in the United States when new federal guidelines were issued in late 2012. All child care facilities, family child care homes, hotels, and other places of public accommodation are bound by the federal standards. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these updated standards addressed issues with safety of drop-side cribs. Cribs that do not have stationary sides are prohibited, as are immobilizer and repair kits. Newer cribs also require stronger wood to prevent slat breakage, as well as anti-loosening devices to keep hardware secure and prevent detachment. Newer cribs also must have strengthened mattress supports and require more vigorous safety testing. Parents and caregivers are urged to get rid of any crib that was made, sold, leased, or resold before the standards were updated in 2012. In addition, after June 28, 2011 it became illegal to sell, resell or lease a crib that does not comply with the federal standards. While certain antiques or passed-down pieces of furniture may have sentimental value, unless they were

made after December 2012, they likely are not up to current safety standards. Cribs that do not meet the standards should be disassembled and disposed of properly. The Government of Canada lists these safety regulations, which were implemented as of December 29, 2016. What to look for when buying a crib: • A product label (model name or number) • Instructions on proper use • The date of manufacture
