Q: I know that Barbara Walters was on “Today” on NBC before she went to ABC, but was that her first job in television? – Dan Wright, via email

A: She actually star ted with NBC on a local level, as a writer-producer of a youth-oriented series done at the network’s New York station. From there, Walters progressed to a similar behind-the-scenes role at “Today,” getting an increasing number of on-air assignments that focused on women’s issues.

She eventually was named a “Today” co-host in 1974, after more than a decade with the program, then was hired away by ABC News two years later to co-anchor the weeknight evening news with Harr y Reasoner Walters then joined her former “Today” colleague Hugh Downs on ABC’s “20/20” in 1979, adding to her dynasty of work that has been celebrated so widely in recent weeks.

Q: I enjoy Alana De La Garza on “FBI,” but why did Sela Ward leave the show? – Chris Adams, Pembroke Pines, Fla.

A: At the time, Primetime Emmy winner Ward’s family resided primarily in Mississippi, so working on the New York-set CBS drama meant a lot of commuting for her a likely reason she decided to leave the show after its first season. Interestingly, Ward herself was a replacement for someone who had been cast as the FBI team’s leader – Connie Nielsen, who appeared only in the pilot episode.

CBS gives ‘Fire Countr y’ a special post-football airing

Football-championship season can mean good news for certain series.

Networks often decide to give extra postgame airings to shows they want to boost and on Sunday, Jan. 29, CBS’ “Fire Country” receives such treatment, as the Max Thieriot-starring drama gets a showcase outside its usual Friday slot, following the AFC Championship contest. In the new story, a plane crash sparks a blaze that Bode Donovan (Thieriot) and other firefighting volunteers among Northern California prison inmates unite to battle.

Having based “Fire Country” (which already has been renewed for a second season) on his own experiences growing up in the Sonoma County region that the show concerns, Thieriot reflects, “I’d say the stuff that’s kind of most memorable right now is the stuff that’s really occurred in the past few years ... obviously, a large portion of the Santa Rosa being destroyed, Coffey Park and all those neighborhoods, all the lives that were tragically lost. It was a really, really devastating fire, so I think that one probably has the biggest impact on me emotionally.”

Thieriot recently ended his connection to “SEAL Team” with the death of his character on that show, now seen on Paramount+, so he’s now exclusive to “Fire Country” – something that could have been foreseen, since he’s also a creator and executive producer of the latter series. He claimed at the start of the television season that he had the energy to keep doing both programs, but his larger commitment clearly was to the latter one.

Additional “Fire Country” stars include Diane Farr, Billy Burke, Jordan Calloway, Kevin Alejandro (who also directed a recent episode), Jules Latimer, Stephanie Arcila and W. Tre Davis. For viewers who may not have seen the show yet – one aim of the after-football scheduling being to draw more viewers to it – executive producer Tony Phelan says they shouldn’t worry about not being able to get up to speed quickly conceived of it as having some serialized elements,” he allows, “but I think it will be easy for audience to come in if they if they have missed episodes. Rap’s evolution explored in ‘Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the

Hip hop is an art form born from the urban decay, unrest and extreme poverty of 1970s New York City. How it led to a powerful political and social movement is explored in a documentary series coming to PBS.

“Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World,” a four-part, four-hour series premiering Tuesday, Jan. 31 (check local listings), tells the story of hip hop as an unapologetic expression of dire experience that spoke truth to power and spread its information through a different lens.

Executive produced by rapper Chuck D and Lorrie Boula (“Rebel Music”), the series recalls the origins of hip hop through archival footage and the voices of those who who were there at the beginning, including Chuck D, Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, Run DMC, will.i.am, MC Lyte, Melle Mel, Fat Joe and Lupe Fiasco.

“Fight the Power” is also the title of the 1989 Public Enemy rap anthem about Black pride that also struck a chord with non-Black listeners with its message of defying authority As hip hop marks its 50th year in 2023, Chuck D, who was a member of Public Enemy at the time, hopes the documentary provides what he calls “a teaching moment. ”

“You had an art form and a genre that rose out of the concrete like a phoenix,” he says. “You had a lot of the deemphasis on school systems, the de-emphasis on New York to make the best time out of the worst time.”
