Movies for Grownups Awards With AARP the Magazine (PBS — new special, Feb. 17)

Alan Cumming hosts as 2022’s best are celebrated at the 21st annual awards from the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Among this year’s contenders for best movie are “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fablemans,” “Tar,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Woman King,” and “Women Talking.” These awards also champion the 50-plus audience, fighting industry ageism and encouraging films and TV shows that resonate with older viewers.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar is busy again

Q: It was good to see Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the “Will Trent” premiere, but I heard that he’s going to have a show of his own again. When will that be on? Terry Dunn, Lancaster, Pa.

A: The “NYPD Blue” and “Saved by the Bell” alum among the stars of “Found,” an NBC series about team that probes ongoing cases of missing people. The show had been slated to premiere later this month, but the network has decided to hold it for the fall season, also ordering additional scripts for it – which would seem to bode well, at least in terms of how NBC executives regard it. Regular cast members also include Shanola Hampton, Brett Dalton (“Mar vel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Chicago Fire”) and Kelli Williams (“The Practice”).

Q: Did the people who hired Jerrod Carmichael to host the Golden Globe Awards expect him to take such shots at them on the show? – Kelly Blake, via email

A: Let’s just say that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (as well as NBC, which had aired his “Carmichael Show” series) had to know who they were getting when they hired him for the job which really is the same situation as when they enlisted Ricky Ger vais or the team of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, also known for edgy humor in their own ways, in earlier years.

The HFPA also must have realized that it was a fairly easy target for satire, given the circumstances that caused it to be without a television home for the Golden Globes last year Carmichael cer tainly took that oppor tunity, just about from the second he first stepped onto the stage for the event, but the overall tone was fairly subdued for an occasion that still was tr ying to play into its reputation as the “par ty of the year.”

Grammy Awards keep things musical with 65th annual ceremony

Music has helped the world keep moving, even in the most challenging of times and that’s a fact that the latest Grammy Award nominations reflect.

The recording industry’s 65th annual ceremony will be presented Sunday, Feb. 5, on CBS and Paramount+ from Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena. Trevor Noah returns as host for the third consecutive year, and the list of those who are up for the honors is led by a veteran of the business, since Beyonce tops the list with nine bids. That number now ties her with someone she knows quite well – her husband,

Jay-Z – as the artists who have scored the most Grammy nominations over time, with 88 each.

Among the other performers who have multiple Grammy chances this time are Kendrick Lamar with eight, and Adele and Brandi Carlile with seven each. They’re followed by a number of talents with six Grammy opportunities apiece: DJ Khalid, Future, Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant (also known as Terius Nash), Randy Merrill and Harry Styles.

The music is the thing for CBS News’

CBS News’ Anthony Mason has always been fascinated with the creative process.

The son of an interior decorator and the stepson of a painter, he had a front-row seat to creativity growing up and a particular love of music. As a teen, he turned on Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” each week and charted a hit song’s rise and fall and he bought the records of the Beatles, the Bee Gees and Crosby, Stills & Nash. He readily admits he has no musical talent but the love was always there.

So in the mid-2000s when he had the chance to interview Bruce Springsteen for “CBS News Sunday Morning,” the native New Yorker was more than willing to take the assignment and quer y “The Boss” about his process. And thus a regular “CBS Mornings” segment was born.

“I never really saw on television the kinds of stories about musicians that I wanted to see,” Mason explains. “Musicians tend to be treated like celebrities and they’re not treated as people and as artists and I grew up in a family of artists ... so I was surrounded by the creative process and I’m fascinated by the creative process.

Mason’s inter views over the years have been wide-ranging, entailing multiple genres and eras. In addition to Springsteen (who he’s inter viewed several times), the impressive list ranges from legends such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Aretha Franklin and Mick Jagger to more current stars like Lady Gaga, Adele, Jason Isbell and Kelsea Ballerini.

He’s also developed relationships with some of them, such as Springsteen and one of his favorites Barr y Gibb, who he’s inter viewed at various points following the deaths of his brothers Robin and Maurice. With them as with all of his subjects, the conversations are about life, music and creativity. Which is something they can all relate to.

“(I) approach them as someone who is interested in artists,” Mason says. “Because that’s the way they want to be seen. You know, they don’t want to be seen as rock stars –at least most of them.”

Get to know the many species of ‘Dogs in the Wild’

Viewers may see some of their beloved family pet in the canines in a new PBS documentary series, but “Dogs in the Wild” are most definitely a different beast.

Airing consecutive Wednesdays beginning Feb. 8 (check local listings), the three-part series titled “Dogs in the Wild, A Nature Miniseries” travels to every continent save Antarctica to follow some of the 37 species within the canid family in their natural habitats, ranging from the familiar such as fox, wolf, coyote and dingo to the lesser knowns like dhole, takuma, fennec and the maned wolf

The photography is exquisite as it captures these animals and their expressions, body language and behaviors, which are not all that different from those of domestic dogs. But these are predators that hunt for survival.

And that proved challenging for the photographers in shoots like the one in the Sahara for the fennec, a squirrelsized canine with rabbit-like ears that can go for days and weeks without water and is a master at not being detected in its barren desert surroundings.

“They’re so, so shy,”

“and they’re living in a place where there’s no cover so getting anywhere near them is very difficult because they know you’re there before you know they’re there. So they were really, really tough to find and really, really tough to film and to film anything meaningful with them because they are so hard to follow. You know, they kind of hear you, smell you, come out of their burrow and disappear.”

The film posits that canids are probably the most adaptable animals on the planet, able to acclimate not only to extreme environments like deserts and the Arctic but also ones in flux. Such is the case with fox and coyote, which have managed live side by side with humans in cities.

“We filmed a family ... of coyotes living on the edge of Minneapolis,” Crawford says, “and they’re living an urban life, basically They were probably one of the hardest species to film because they’re just so incredibly good at being hidden even in the kind of urban location where they had a den. You know, they had pups so they were breeding and living right alongside people and staying so unbelievably out of sight. It was incredible.”
