‘True Lies’ takes series form on CBS and Paramount+

Almost 30 years later, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron’s top movie hits is becoming a television series ... and that’s the truth.

The seriocomic adventure “True Lies” premieres in its weekly form Wednesday, March 1, on CBS and Paramount+, basically remaking the 1994 film as the opening episode. Steve Howey (“Shameless,” “Reba”) assumes Schwarzenegger’s role as Harry Tasker, a super-spy whose wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” inheriting Jamie Lee Curtis’ earlier part) believes he’s a mild-mannered computer salesman. Once she learns what his real job is, she’s enlisted by his intelligence agency, and they frequently travel the world on missions – while trying to prevent their children (Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye) from finding out.

“It’s the hardest job I’ve had yet,” states the goodhumored Howey, who has no illusions about possibly being mistaken for Schwarzenegger as he generates

his own “True Lies” under the leadership of executive prodicer Matt Nix (“Burn Notice”). “This experience has taught me a lot about having an idea and then executing it,” Howey reflects, “because that doesn’t always pan out. Every episode of this gets better And we get more tired.”

An alum of CBS’ “Showcase” talent search, the lively Gonzaga knows “True Lies” also is a big showcase for her. She notes she feels “guilty” that she didn’t see the movie before landing the TV job: “I didn’t want to be influenced by Jamie Lee’s iconic performance. And then, I had to buy the DVD off eBay ... and a DVD player. It was a whole ‘thing.’ ”

With Omar Miller (“CSI: Miami”), Erica Hernandez and Mike O’Gorman also featured, “True Lies” has been in development for TV since 2010, and Gonzaga reasons that it’s “good that it’s been a while.” Since Cameron also had other commitments (including the now-Oscar-nominated “Avatar: The Way of Water”), his longtime associate Rae Sanchini had more firsthand involvement in the casting; Tom Arnold, of the original movie, is a guest star on the show.

Being built for action, “True Lies” can put its stars at risk, as Howey learned close to the end of filming the first season.

A: Nothing about that had been announced at the time this column was written, but it would seem entirely possible that the “Hot in Cleveland” and “Just Shoot Me!” alum could return to the NBC sitcom revival to cause more grief for John Larroquette’s Dan Fielding. The characters have a past connection that Fielding didn’t remember initially, and that easily could be mined for more humor if not in the show’s current season, then perhaps in Season 2 (which it already has been renewed for).

Q: Is it true that “Let the Right One In” has been canceled? – Madison Parker, via email

A: It is. Though generally well-received critically, the Demian Bichir-starring Showtime series based on the 2008 movie (and the novel that inspired both versions) was among the casualties announced when it became public that Showtime and Paramount+ will merge. In fact, anyone who still hoped to watch what now is the sole season of the show had to move fast, since it was slated to be removed from the ser vices. The deletion is symbolic of something that’s been happening lately at a number of cable networks and streamers, which are tr ying to cut costs (and rights payments) by eliminating programs that don’t meet a certain threshold of viewership. It’s interesting that “Let the Right One In” had been earmarked for a couple of other outlets –namely, A&E Network, then TNT – before landing at Showtime. “I was fighting a stunt man,” he reports, “and we did it once and it went great. Then we did it again, and he pretended to bounce his face off a wall ... and as he went back, my left hand went forward into his neck, and it snapped my left ring finger back to the point where my nail hit my knuckle. And I finished the stunt, and when they yelled ‘Cut!,’ I snapped it back. Then I got an X-ray and sure enough, I broke the bone. And I thought, ‘ There’s a reason you have a stunt guy. Use him.’ ”

Meet Michelle Bancewicz, the new captain of the ‘Wicked Tuna’ fleet

Catching giant bluefin tuna on National Geographic’s “Wicked Tuna” is ever yday business. But just how colossal these creatures are never truly hits home until you see one in scale.

That was certainly the case in a video that went viral in 2021 of Michelle Bancewicz hoisting up and boating a nine-foot, 800-pound bluefin on her boat No Limits off the coast of her native New Hampshire. The leviathan looked the size of a subcompact car as it twirled on a tailrope next to the diminutive 5-foot1-inch boat captain. And the best part: She did it by herself. At night.

“I think that was my second solo fish ...,” Bancewicz recalls, “so I was pretty pumped when I did get it. I was like, ‘Wow, did I just get that?’ And then (the challenge) was just getting it in the boat. Because once you get it to the boat, basically the work’s just starting. ... You’ve got to gut it, stuff it with ice and then you’ve got

PBS’ ‘Black Broadway’ features a who’

An impressive assemblage of Black stage talent blows the roof off in a concert special coming to PBS.

In “Black Broadway: A Proud History, A Limitless Future,” premiering Tuesday, Feb. 28 (check local listings), artists including Nova Payton, Corbin Bleu, Stephanie Mills, Norm Lewis, Nikki Renee Daniels and Amber Iman take the stage at Cramton Auditorium at Howard University in Washington, D.C., to perform selections from such iconic shows as “The Wiz,” “Ain’t Misbahavin’,” “Porgy and Bess” and “The Color Purple,” accompanied by the American Pops Orchestra.

So in the two-hour special that was taped this past October, viewers will be treated to classics such as “Come Rain or Come Shine” (from “St. Louis Woman”), “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’ ” (“Porgy and Bess”), “Being Alive” (“Company”) and “I Am Telling You” (“Dreamgirls”).

For Payton, the evening was special, not only because she got to perform a showstopping rendition of “I Am Telling You,” but also it came on her home turf of Howard, where she was in her first stage production at age 3 and where she now teaches in the voice program.

“I felt like we were at a rock concert,” she reports, “and the reason why I say that is because it was just the most exhilarating feeling, like the energy in the building (was) unmatched. I try to explain to people that the audience are just as much a part of the show as we are, and whatever you

the whole clean-up process starting, really.”

Bancewicz becomes Tuna,” when the National for its 12th season Sunday, Seabrook, N.H., and her first mate Lea Pinaud will fish against returning regulars Dave Marciano of the Hard Merchandise, T.J. Ott of the Hot Tuna, Tyler McLaughlin of the Pinwheel and Dave Carraro of the Tuna.com, among others, hoping to log the largest overall catch of the season.

They’ll also contend with some challenging conditions. Fuel prices are up, the economy isn’t great and state regulations now allow them to fish only four days a week and take one fish per day So with less opportunity to make a paycheck, the pressure will be especially great to find the giants.

“It’s one of those things where it’s almost like you dream of doing ...,” she says. “So to be able to bring this show to my hometown to be recorded in what I consider one of my home theaters is amazing, with artists that are just so talented and so great to collaborate with.”
