The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song 2023 (PBS — new special, March 31)

Legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell is honored as the recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. This tribute concert celebrates the artist who set a new standard of marrying music and lyrics. With songs such as “Both Sides, Now,” “Chelsea Morning,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock” and “The Circle Game,” Mitchell became a household name and left a distinct impression on both American culture and internationally, drawing from jazz, classical and rock as she crossed various musical genres.

HBO’s line of ‘Succession’ will end soon

A: Evidently Series creator and executive producer Jesse Armstrong says the four th season of the much-acclaimed HBO drama – which begins Sunday, March 26 – will be its last. As he pointed out in making the announcement, the show’s title infers that things won’t remain the same. That certainly will be the case for fans who have gotten used to the business machinations and power struggles of the program’s Roy family (portrayed by stars including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin). The advice to those viewers is to enjoy the upcoming episodes as much as possible, since it appears that those will mark the end of the road for the series. With that being said, though, there have been reports that Armstrong may be considering doing a “Succession” spinoff of some sort.

Q: I thought I heard it said that Margaret Hoover of “Firing Line” is a relative of President Herbert Hoover. Is that true? – Eric Barnett, Reading, Pa.

A: She is the great-granddaughter of America’s 31st President, and she maintains that family tie by ser ving on boards at both the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Herber t Hoover Presidential Librar y Association. She also ser ved for another chief executive as Associate Director of Intergovernmental Af fairs for President George W. Bush. In addition to her weekly role on PBS’ “Firing Line,” Hoover is a contributor for CNN where she frequently makes tandem appearances with her husband, political insider John Avlon.

Bob Odenkirk brings ‘Lucky Hank’ to orner y life in AMC/AMC+ dramedy

Hank Devereaux Jr is a man who is stuck.

As played by Bob Odenkirk in the half-hour dramedy “Lucky Hank,” premiering Sunday, March 19, on AMC and AMC+, he’s the chairman of the English department at Railton College, a badly underfunded school in the Pennsylvania Rust Belt.

Like his employer, which he calls “mediocrity’s capital,” Hank is also struggling. He’s not really happy with academia nor his department and his position in it, and his do-nothing approach seems to scream “fire me.” But he has people who care about him, especially wife Lily (Mireille Enos, “ The Killing”), who truly loves this curmudgeon and is entertained by his antics. But that doesn’t hold true for everyone.

We meet Hank as he’s delivering a spiritcrushing critique to a spoiled student, which gets the attention of school administration. With his chairmanship and ultimately his job now in jeopardy, Hank appears outwardly happy about the prospect of being forced to move on. But is he?

The eight episode series was created by Paul Lieberstein (“ The Office”) and Aaron Zelman (“Silicon Valley”) from the novel “Straight Man” by Richard Russo, and features a tour-de-force performance by Odenkirk, who found the character to be a complete and welcome departure from his “Better Call Saul” role of shady lawyer Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman.

“ While he’s a curmudgeon,” the actor explains, “he is like a lot of curmudgeons kind of beloved for the way he’s a crab Like his wife finds it funny, people find him funny They don’t take it seriously and they get a laugh out of it and he knows they get a laugh out of it, so he knows he can kind of indulge this crabby side of himself and everyone will just go, ‘Oh, that’s Hank. That’s funny. Just laugh at it.’

“And he has a daughter, they fight like crazy but they love each other. And he has a wife, they’ve been together for like 25, 26 years and they love each other So I loved playing a character who was funny, smart, good with language and had love around him and a life worth saving. So that really appealed to me an awful lot and for me made the character so fundamentally different from Jimmy McGill.”

But like Jimmy, Hank is a complicated guy with an estrangement in his life, in his case his much more successful father Hank Sr., a renowned film critic, which haunts him and is a relationship the series will explore.

“ There’s an emptiness inside him that he’s ver y afraid of,” Odenkirk says, “afraid of feeling it, afraid of thinking about it but it’s ver y present. It drives him in a lot of ways. ”

Celebs who can build things

Many an actor will tell you that a great way to come down from a demandrole is to build something.

Indeed, whether it’s framing a wall, installing a window or finishing a basethere is something about the left-brain, cut-and-dried logic of carpentr y offers a nice departure from the right-brain business of taking on a charactrauma.

Many did it before they became successful thesps, others adopted it after means of relaxation. But all found it to be great escapism – kind of like acting.

illiam H. Macy: The former “Shameless” star likes to say he’s a hack who “the money that I can ruin a lot of lumber,” but he’s built a bridge and several gazebos on his Southern California property as well as furniture in his extensive woodshop. He also has a lathe on which he’ll turn salad bowls. He caught the woodworking bug from his father in his native Mar yland and it’s a young actor, Ford wasn’t happy with the roles offered him so he hit the local himself carpentr y. His skills got him numerous jobs around Hollywood, one him a bit part in “The Conversation.” That connection got him a meeting with George Lucas, who asked him to read for a new movie called “Star Wars.” And the rest, as they say, is histor y.

Kevin Dunn: The character actor best known for his role of White House Chief of Staff in the HBO political comedy “Veep” acquired his carpentr y chops building show sets while in college and followed that up by buying and renovating several houses in his native Chicago. He calls it “good therapy” because it gets his mind off his troubles.

A baseball great contemplates his legacy in Prime Video’s ‘Reggie’

To baseball fans of a certain age, Reggie Jackson was perhaps the premier slugger of his generation, a Hall-of-Fame clutch hitter with five World Series titles, an MVP award and numerous other laurels to his credit. But at 74, he’s also a man in search of his legacy, which is detailed in a documentary coming to Prime Video

In “Reggie,” which begins streaming Friday, March 24, we meet Jackson at his home in Monterey, Calif., where he’s considering his legacy as a trailblazing Black athlete fighting for dignity, respect and a place at the table.

During his life and career – which spanned 1967-87 with the Oakland A’s, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and California Angels – Jackson witnessed a dramatic shift in race relations in this country, from the beginning of his playing days in Birmingham, Ala., at the height of the civil rights movement; to Oakland and the rise of the Black Panthers; and to New York as baseball’s highest player in the poverty-stricken Bronx.

The film features interviews with a very candid and at times raw Jackson as well as with former A’s teammates Joe Rudi, Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers. He also sits down with fellow legends Julius Erving, Hank Aaron, Derek Jeter and far Black athletes have really come and the leagues they want to leave behind for future generations.

The film is directed by Alex Stapleton (“Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea”), who came at this not as a baseball fan but as somewhat of an outsider, which she thinks gave Jackson a level of comfort that enabled him to be open.

“I think what I was so excited about with Reggie,” she explains, “is he’s very authentic and he doesn’t really hide who he is. And I think that in a world today where there’s so many docs being made about athletes I think Reggie’s story is a little bit of fresh air in that environment (where athletes are very media-savvy) in a way because I think that even to this day he’s very honest about his feelings and the mistakes that he made and maybe how it could have been different.”

After receiving fertile eggs from a donor, Rebecca (Kayleigh Anne Ruller) and Caleb (CJ Hammond) are finally able to have a child and start a family. Four years later, a strange woman (Liz Fenning) appears in their life, and is oddly drawn to their daughter. It seems the egg donor has returned—and she wants what is “rightfully” hers in this 2023 thriller.
