ABC weekday staple ‘General Hospital’ turns 60

Very few television programs last for 60 years, especially in the current media climate.

That makes it a big deal, indeed, that the ABC drama “General Hospital” – which has won the Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding drama series 14 times, a record – is marking its six-decade milestone with special moments before and after the actual anniversary: April 1, which falls on a Saturday this year. Still, the Monday-through-Friday episodes surrounding that date will honor legendary characters and stories (including a tribute to late co-star Sonya Eddy), and bring back the popular Nurses Ball being staged for the first time in three years.

Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, the saga of the residents of the fictional Port Charles (now guided by executive producer Frank Valentini) has transformed since its 1963 debut, reaching one of its peaks with the 1981 wedding of Luke and Laura Spencer (played

daytime-TV history. However, for whatever romance or espionage has been factored in, the center of the show always has been the title medical facility

One of the longtime characters reflecting that is Nurse Elizabeth Webber, portrayed by Rebecca Herbst, who’s marking her own “General Hospital” milestone by celebrating her 25th anniversary with the series. The part was created for her, and with her alter ego having gone through affairs and kidnappings and pregnancies over a quarter-century, the three-time Daytime Emmy nominee appreciates that she remains prominent on the show.

“It certainly does not feel like it’s been 25 years,” the pleasant Herbst reflects. “We have so many cast members, I do not envy the writers with their job of keeping everybody on the canvas in these complex stories. It really is amazing to me. ”

Herbst confirms that the mood on the “General Hospital” set has been quite spirited lately. “I feel like we look at each other and just chuckle in a way,” she muses, “because this show has been around for 60 years. We’re not surprised, because it’s been a popular show forever and our writers have done a really great job of keeping up with the times. We’re just incredibly grateful that we’re still here!”

Lewis repor tedly will be in half of the 12 new episodes, and since Axe will return from his self-imposed exile in Europe (to avoid being arrested and incarcerated in America), it will be interesting to see just how he re-enters the picture also because when he left, Axe was on the verge of a romance with his longtime adviser Wendy Rhoades (continuing series star Maggie Sif f).

Q: Did Steven Spielberg choose “Day for Night” as one of the films he introduced on Turner Classic Movies because it was directed by someone he had worked with, Francois Truffaut? – Bruce Crane, via email

A: That cer tainly may have been one aspect of it, with Spielberg having directed Truf faut in 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (to his surprise, since he said during that recent evening on TCM that he didn’t expect the Frenchman to accept the role). However, it’s surely bigger than that, too since “Day for Night,” released in 1973 (with Truf faut playing the director of the movie within the movie), is all about the ar t of moviemaking.

With a directing career that has surpassed 50 years, Spielberg is all about that subject, as he has reaf firmed via the theme of his latest film, the much-praised “The Fabelmans.” Thus, “Day for Night” would be of natural interest to him, so it’s no shock that he selected that – along with “The Man Who Shot Liber ty Valance” and “A Walk in the Sun” –for his night as TCM’s guest programmer

Married to former “General Hospital” co-star Michael Saucedo, with whom she has three children, Herbst almost left the show in 2011 due to a storyline shift. Fans spoke up against that – loudly – and effectively saved her job.

Expressing her ongoing thanks for that, Herbst says that lately, the initially rebellious Elizabeth is “ not too far off from who she was when she came to Port Charles. It’s really nice that I’ve been able to add so many layers to the character over the years. ”

Emergency restoration exper ts help homeowners rebuild in ‘Renovation 911’

Kirsten Meehan and Lindsey Uselding are the type of people a homeowner hopes to never have to meet. But if they do, they’ll be the perhaps the best allies one could have.

For in “Renovation 911,” premiering Tuesday, March 28, on HGTV, these sisters are the ones who come to pick up the pieces and rebuild after a fire, flood or natural disaster strikes. As owners of Minneapolis-based Ungerman, Inc., they’ll answer the emergency call and then take care of ever ything – from dealing with insurance companies, contracting and budgeting to design and reconstruction.

There is also a psychological component here. Their clients are people who have just experienced one of the worst traumas one could have, the loss of par ts or all of a home as well as its contents, so these ladies are exper ts at lending a sympathetic ear and shepherding them through the process of rebuilding.

“We are often playing therapist as much as we are playing general contractor,” Meehan explains. “It’s a really delicate process because, you know, all of their family photos have burned up or all of their Christmas decorations have burned up and it’s really, really emotional.”

“Really, we show compassion, empathy,” Uselding adds, “and we bring a special exper tise to the situation, help guide them through their loss and then add a little humor You know, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and (we’re) reminding our clients of that and getting them past that distress (to) see the possibilities.”

Joni Mitchell receives music’ Gershwin Prize

As this writer can confirm, ask celebrities who their favorite musician is, and many will respond – without hesitation – “Joni Mitchell.”

This year, the veteran singersongwriter receives one of the top accolades in her field, the Librar y of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The award was presented to Mitchell in Washington, D.C., early this month in a ceremony taped for PBS; it airs Friday, March 31 (check local listings), with James Taylor, Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper, Graham Nash and Diana Krall among those performing in tribute to the honoree.

The Canada-born Mitchell made her way from her native Alberta to Toronto as an artist in the mid-1960s, with folk singer Chuck Mitchell giving her inspiration to move to America plus his last name, as her husband. They would divorce after a

couple of years, but she remained attraction at East Coast clubs.
