Q: Is there any news about the remaining “1923” episodes being available? And will there be any new episodes of “Yellowstone”? –Mary Margolis, Sacramento, Calif.

A: Expect the second (and, as planned, final) season of “1923” to arrive late this year or early next year. That would be about a year after the Paramount+ “Yellowstone” prequel premiered, and such a shooting schedule would accommodate cast members’ other projects and also take advantage of the seasonal weather that is such a part of the story. However, the situation with “Yellowstone” itself is very much up in the air as of this writing. Reportedly, star Kevin Costner wanted to compact his filming for the second half of the Paramount Network show’s Season 5 into a condensed schedule, which the show’s makers apparently found unworkable. Rumors have swirled about the series coming to an end, or of Matthew McConaughey joining the show as a replacement (presumably as a new character), but those have been unconfirmed.

Saturday, April 22, marks the 54th Earth Day and with it comes some noteworthy programming on broadcast, cable and streaming that celebrate the environment and all that live in it.

Leading the parade is “Secrets of the Elephants.” Premiering Friday, April 21, on National Geographic (and available the next day on Disney+), the four-part documentary series from executive producer James Cameron travels the world from the savannahs of Africa to the urban landscapes of Asia to spotlight the strategic thinking, complex emotions and sophisticated language of these gentle giants that help shape their unique culture. Narrated by Natalie Portman, it also reveals how similar they are to humans.

The next day on Nat Geo, the documentary “Path of the Panther” follows National Geographic Explorer and photographer Carlton Ward Jr. as he ventures into the uncharted world of the Florida Panther, whose habitat in the Everglades is shrinking in an area on the brink of ecological collapse.

Over on PBS on Wednesday, April 19 (check local listings), is the Season 2 premiere of “Changing Planet,” which

revisits six of the Earth’s most vulnerable ecosystems and catches up with the scientists and experts introduced in the first season who are working to safeguard their communities and wildlife. Dr. M. Sanjayan hosts this season’s episodes from Australia, a country suffering from the devastating effects of climate change but also on the forefront of potential solutions.

Climate change also plays a leading role in “Chasing the Rains,” premiering Saturday on BBC America and AMC+. Narrated by actor Adjoa Andoh (“Bridgerton”), the threepart documentary series goes to Kenya to follow three animal matriarchs – an elephant, a wild dog and a cheetah – as they try to raise their young in an environment stricken by a prolonged drought and patrolled by hungry predators. AMC+ subscribers also get a “Making of” documentary that also drops on Earth Day.

If the environment in the Cretaceous Period is of interest, Apple’s “Prehistoric Planet,” from Jon Favreau and the makers of “Planet Earth,” may be worth checking out. Streaming its first season all month, it combines cutting-edge wildlife filmmaking, state-of-the-art technology and the latest paleontological findings to show what life was like for dinosaurs and present little-known facts about their environment. Season 2 of the series arrives on May 22.

Also streaming all month on Netflix are the first two seasons of “Down to Earth With Zac Efron,” in which the Emmy-winning actor journeys around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien to seek out healthy, sustainable ways to live.

And on the travel/lifestyle streaming service and app Journy is the documentary “One Ocean,” which follows leading marine scientists who endeavor to learn more about the four oceans’ past and present in order to preserve their future.

Handy and camera ready: The TV handyperson hall of fame

They make it look easy on camera but the folks who ply their trade on home improvement shows have put in a lot of time – and made a lot of mistakes – in the process of perfecting their craft.

But viewers don’t see that. They’ll see a beautifully finished home and think, “If they can do it, so can I.” Many a weekend handyman or woman have embarked on a home project armed with the knowledge and bravado acquired from these shows. The following are but a few who have served as their inspiration.

Norm Abram, “This Old House”: No one embodies the “measure twice, cut once” philosophy more than the master carpenter, who in 2022 stepped down after 43 years on “TOH.” His common sense approach, elegant designs and sheer knowhow made carpentry and home improvement projects accessible to viewers and helped to remove the intimidation factor. The many homes he’s had a hand in renovating around Boston and the U.S. attest to his skill.

Ty Pennington, “Trading Spaces,” “Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition”: Woodworking and carpentry have been a part of Pennington’s life since childhood though it was an early adulthood as a male model and graphic designer that helped steer him toward entertainment. A self-described Jack of all trades, he also develops real estate in his native Atlanta when he’s not on television.

Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk, “Good Bones”: This mother/daughter tandem, a former defense attorney and part-time waitress/ real estate agent, began flipping rundown homes in the Fountain Square neighborhood in Indianapolis in their spare time. A home reno business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, and this successful HGTV series followed.

With the 30th anniversary of the final siege on the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, Texas, coming this week, a new limited series looks at those final days and how it connects to today’s climate.

“Waco: The Aftermath,” a five-episode drama that begins airing on Showtime Sunday, April 16, focuses on the fallout from the 51-day siege at Waco that ended April 19, 1993, with the Mount Carmel complex in flames and a total of 86 dead, as well as the trials of surviving members of the sect and the rise of homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh.

It also puts the events in a broader historical context, connecting them to the escalation of the American militia movement and foreshadowing the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The series is a continuation of the 2018 series “Waco” (which will also be available on Showtime non-linear and linear platforms) and returns Michael Shannon to the role of FBI hostage negotiator Gary Noesner and John Leguizamo as ATF agent Jacob Vasquez. Also in the cast are Giovanni Ribisi, David Costabile and John Hoogenakker.

“One thing in the research of this season that really put a sharper focus for me,” explains showrunner Drew Dowdle, who created both series with brother John Erick Dowdle, “was just how insanely bad the timing of Waco was in this world, in this movement of anti-government. And I think after Ruby Ridge, which was in August of ‘92 and that fall, all these groups of all different stripes that had a lot of disagreements amongst them, decided that we need to put aside our differences and come together under a common cause and fight a common enemy, and that’s the U.S. government.”

“And then in February Waco happened,” he continues, “and just the timing of it is just crazy bad, and I think the government didn’t fully realize that in the aftermath of Waco how much responsibility to take and how much to get ahead of that. I think there was a lot of effort to just move past it (with the attitude) the Branch Davidians got what they had coming and it was their fault and let’s move on. And I don’t think there was a more 10,000-foot view of this world and how much anger is out there.”
