Q: Has “The Resident” been canceled? – Don Sherman, via email

A: It has. It took a while for Fox to make that decision after the medical drama’s sixth (and, ultimately, final) season ended last January, but it seemed clear that the Matt Czuchry-starring show’s makers had prepared what became the last episode to be either a season finale or an ending for the entire series ... not an easy thing to do, we might add. Though some networks have done more than one medical series at the same time, given the fewer programming hours Fox has, the writing seemed to be on the wall when the network announced the forthcoming drama “Doc” – an adaptation of an Italian drama about a medic struggling to overcome several years of memory loss. A few days later, the cancellation of “The Resident” was made known.

Mention the word “jeopardy” just about anywhere in North America and chances are the 30-second thinking tune will spring straight to mind. A staple feature across all “Jeopardy!” episodes from the original series to the college championships, teachers tournaments and beyond, the theme song now has another installment to hitch its musical wagon to.

“Jeopardy! Masters” is a new spinoff series premiering in prime time Monday, May 8, on ABC. Hosted by “Jeopardy!” GOAT (greatest of all time) and current regular series host Ken Jennings, this tournament takes place over 10 episodes, pitting six former “Jeopardy!” champions against one another in classic round-robin fashion.

With the “Masters” announcement, ABC released the names of the six big winners who are featured in several seasons of the long-running regular show. Perhaps most popular among them is James Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler and trivia contestant from Naperville, Illinois. After his 32-game, $2.5-million win on “Jeopardy!” during the spring of 2019, Holzhauer went on to appear alongside other “Jeopardy!” GOATs in the American version of the British game show series “The Chase.”

Joining Holzhauer behind the podiums are two Ohio-born contestants: writer Amy Schneider and Yale PhD candidate Matt Amodio,

both of whom competed in 2021.

Amodio, whose 38-game streak on “Jeopardy!” has become known as “The Amodio Rodeo,” won $1.5 million during his 39 appearances, making him the third-highest earner in regular season play to date. His is also the third-longest winning streak after Schneider and Jennings himself.

Current Oakland, California resident Schneider, however, is second only to 74-game champion Jennings when it comes to wins. Reigning over “Jeopardy’s” regular season play for a total of 40 games, Schneider took home a cool $1.6 million. Ranking as both the most successful woman and the most successful trans person ever to compete in the series, Schneider’s particular strength has been in the Final Jeopardy! Round, in which she answered 30 of 41 clues correctly.

All good things must come to an end, however, and Schneider was ousted in January 2022 by another contestant, Chicago librarian Rhone Talsma (who will not appear in the Masters tournament). Of course, Schneider knew her time on top would eventually end, as it was she who dethroned fellow Master Andrew He at the start of her run.

An MIT grad, software developer and competitive programmer, He is not only a “Jeopardy!” champion but also the 2021 winner of the Facebook Hacker Cup. Well known on the quiz show for his expert wagering tactics and narrow-margin wins (wins by just $1 or $2), He is the second youngest of the “Masters” series competitors.

The title of “youngest champion” goes to Canadian tutor Mattea Roach. Boasting an impressive 93% accuracy with regard to her buzzed-in answers, Roach won the hearts of many with her quirky hand gestures and down-to-earth repartee. The most successful Canadian in “Jeopardy!” history, Roach’s 23-game win puts her in sixth place for earnings at just 23 years old. “Jeopardy! Masters” will put Roach back in the game with other Tournament of Champions contestants, including He, to whom she lost during the November 2022 ToC.

The most recent master is a rather familiar (some may say “celebrity”) face. Sam Buttrey, a new favourite among “Jeopardy!” fans, has caught attention for his remarkable physical likeness to comedic actor Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”). Buttrey, however, unlike Martin (so far as anyone knows), is somewhat of a trivia master, securing his place in the ToC after winning the first-ever “Jeopardy! Professors Tournament.” The Naval Postgraduate School associate professor of operations research even got the chance to play Amodio in the ToC semifinals — a previously stated dream of his — and won.

Series all-stars go head to head in ‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’

It seems we can’t get enough of watching people struggling to survive the elements. Whether it’s being dropped from a helicopter into a remote mountain gorge, scaling a glacier in subzero temperatures or subsisting on squirrel meat and sumac leaves, the sight of men and women transformed into creatures trying to stay live is an endless source of fascination and prompts us to wonder what we would to in the same situation. Another entry in survivalist TV arrives this week with “Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing.” Premiering Sunday, May 7, on Discovery Channel, it follows 12 all-stars from the original “Naked and Afraid” series as they take on South Africa’s challenging Oribi Gorge, a nature reserve that boasts dramatic sandstone cliffs, dense forests, rivers, rapids and abundant wildlife.

Here, survivalists will compete in a grueling multiphase challenge over 45 days that will test their survival skills as well as their abilities to strategize and outwit one another. The winner receives a $100,000 cash prize.

Of course, this is but one in an ocean of survival TV series, many of which can be found on streaming. Such as the following.

“Naked and Afraid” (discovery+): The mothership series made a splash back in 2013 with what then was a unique concept: dropping a pair of strangers into the wild with nothing – not even clothes – but a single useful item and their will to survive for 21 days. Its success spawned “Naked and Afraid XL” as well as the above new series.

“Alone” (History, Freevee): Probably the standard bearer of the genre, this series drops contestants in various wilderness areas around the world with only a few items and no help. They’ll have to find food and water, build shelter, and defend themselves from wildlife and the elements. Whomever lasts the longest without requesting rescue is the winner.

“You vs. Wild” (Netflix): No list of survival shows is complete without Bear Grylls, who is the focus of this interactive series that lets viewers make life-or-death decisions for him, like for instance whether to eat that fungus growing on a nearby tree for sustenance. In the process, they learn how to handle such situations.

Drew Barrymore hosts MTV Movie & TV Awards

Drew Barrymore is planted firmly in both worlds the event encompasses, so she’s a solid choice to host the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The ceremony will be shown on the cable channel Sunday, May 7, as it originates from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Viewers now used to the amusing yet sincere persona seen in weekday syndication on “The Drew Barrymore Show” can expect more of it as she introduces various personalities to present honors ranging from the traditional (best movie, best song, etc.) to the more MTV-oriented ... the latter including best fight and best kiss. Barrymore herself is in the running for best host, for her own show.

A member of a family acting dynasty, Barrymore also has her own history as a movie star, dating back to her performance at a very young age in “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” She parlayed her fame from that film into others as she grew up, with a number of them becoming classics in their own rights, such as “The Wedding Singer,” “Ever After” and “Never Been Kissed.” References to her own big-screen resume would seem likely during her MTV stint.
